Upgrading in value chains: the role of the leader\'s strategy.

Oliveira, Luis Fernando da Costa 16 December 2015 (has links)
This research investigates how the leading firms\' strategy affects the suppliers\' upgrading in a Global Value Chain. Recent indications suggest that the strategic orientation of a value chain plays an important role in suppliers\' upgrading. Associated with virtuous development cycles, upgrading represents the access to trajectories alternative to the \"race to the bottom\" in the global economic competition. The traditional literature does not include the leader\'s strategy among the explanations of upgrading, considering it a result of the supplier\'s innovative activities, subject to effects from the experienced governance modes. Based on the literature on Global Value Chains and Operations Strategy, a conceptual model brings the leader\'s competitive priorities as moderating variables for the relationship between interfirm governance and suppliers\' upgrading. A multiple case study was conducted with four development firms, which together account for a diverse sample from the Brazilian Digital Games Industry. Beyond the influence of the chain governance and the leader\'s strategy over the suppliers\' upgrading, the discussion included other strategic improvements and strategies defined by other actors in the chain. The conclusions are: (I) In relational chains, the supplier\' upgrading occurs in line with the leader\'s strategy; (II) In modular chains, a supplier has better upgrading opportunities under strategies of other actors, besides the chain\'s leader (III) Companies operating in multiple chains have better upgrading levels than firms with focused operations, while also leveraging other strategic changes.

Zambon, Pedro Santoro. January 2020 (has links)
Abstract: The thesis analyzes the phenomenon of creative hubs and their effects on the development of the Digital Games Industry (DGI). The methodological procedure is the construction of theories through case studies. Data collection was done through documentary research on websites and public reports of 69 creative DGI hubs mapped around the world. The collection also involves semi-structured online and in-person interviews with managers of the hubs, and field research with direct observations. The study describes the global structure of the DGI and analyzes its implications for local ecosystems. Maps and systematizes DGI's creative hubs, describes and classifies the actions carried out by these hubs. It studies the case of the Dutch Game Garden hub as an example of these initiatives. Based on the data collected and systematized, hypotheses are formulated and analyzed in the light of the literature. As a result, a series of theoretical assumptions are made about DGI's creative hubs. They are: creative hubs can expand the proximity between agents in a cluster; collaboration is essential to the success of a creative hub; the efficiency of the actions carried out by the creative hub is related to the degree of maturity of the cluster in which it is located; creative hubs play the role of intermediaries in creative cities; and the actions of the hubs are able to catalyze the development of creative clusters in the Digital Games Industry. / Doutor

Technology and Knowledge Networks of Digital Game Industry in Regional Innovation System

TSAI ,PEI CHUAN Unknown Date (has links)
In the innovation system, firms, schools and research institutes are new technology and knowledge storage places. The interactions between nodes play important roles in the innovation networks. In order to gain technology advantages, leading firms provide expenses to purchase and introduce technology to establish core ability. They form consortia with other firms, schools, and research institutes to build up regional specific industries in the regions. The dynamic network formed from the interaction of units is the main factor to facilitate regional innovative activities. This thesis is on the basis of Regional Innovation System (RIS) in Taiwan and takes “Digital Games” for example. Each actor interacts in the technology and knowledge networks in the RIS. Regarding firms, associate research institutes and industry associations as driving roles in the innovative networks, this thesis applies innovation networks surveys and the methodology of Social network analysis in Sociology to observe technology and knowledge interactions in the innovative networks. The major conclusions are as follows: First, “Far East Century Scientific Square” in Jhonghe City and “ Nan-Gang Software Industrial Park” in Taipei City are surrounded extremely strongly innovation milieu in the north of Taiwan. Secondly, owing to self-contained, digital games firms are deficient in interaction with each other. Activities in the networks are vertical relations almost, not horizontal ones. Firms tend to depending on international technology resources in the networks. The third, many competent actors basing on the advantage of information and knowledge transfer very quickly and conveniently in knowledge networks are located in the core of technology networks. A small number of firms repeatedly play the important role in technology and knowledge networks. From the network structure, this thesis proved technology and knowledge have a close relationship. Finally, technology networks display circular structures which exchange and transfer quite frequently and quickly; knowledge networks display star structure which have apparent core units and which are advantageous to transfer knowledge.
