Optimal stockpiles under stochastic uncertaintyHernandez Avalos, Javier January 2015 (has links)
We study stockpiling problems under uncertain economic and physical factors, and investigate the valuation and optimisation of storage systems where the availability and spot price of the underlying are both subject to stochasticity. Following a Real Options valuation approach, we first study financial derivatives linked to Asian options. A comprehensive set of boundary conditions is compiled, and an alternative (and novel) similarity reduction for fixed-strike Asian options is derived. Hybrid semi-Lagrangian methods for numerically solving the related partial differential equations (PDEs) are implemented, and we assess the accuracy of the valuations thus obtained with respect to results from classical finite-difference valuation methods and with respect to high precision calculations for valuing Asian options with spectral expansion theory techniques. Next we derive a PDE model for valuing the storage of electricity from a wind farm, with an attached back-up battery, that operates by trading electricity in a volatile market in order to meet a contracted fixed rate of energy generation; this system comprises two diffusive-type (stochastic) variables, namely the energy production and the electricity spot price, and two time-like (deterministic) variables, specifically the battery state and time itself. An efficient and novel semi-Lagrangian alternating-direction implicit (SLADI) methodology for numerically solving advection-diffusion problems is developed: here a semi-Lagrangian approach for hyperbolic problems of advection is combined with an alternating-direction implicit method for parabolic problems involving diffusion. Efficiency is obtained by solving (just) tridiagonal systems of equations at every time step. The results are compared to more standard semi-Lagrangian Crank-Nicolson (SLCN) and semi-Lagrangian fully implicit (SLFI) methods. Once he have established our PDE model for a storage-upgraded wind farm, a system that depends heavily on the highly stochastic nature of wind and the volatile market where electricity is sold, we derive a Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation for optimally controlling charging and discharging rates of the battery in time, and we assess a series of operation regimes. The solution of the related PDE models is approached numerically using our SLADI methodology to efficiently treat this mixed advection and diffusion problem in four dimensions. Extensive numerical experimentation confirms our SLADI methodology to be robust and yields highly accurate solutions and efficient computations, we also explore effects from correlation between stochastic electricity generation and random prices of electricity as well as effects from a seasonal electricity spot price. Ultimately, the objective of approximating optimal storage policies for a system under uncertain economic and physical factors is accomplished. Finally we examine the steady-state solution of a stochastic storage problem under uncertain electricity market prices and fixed demand. We use a HJB formulation for optimally controlling charging and discharging rates of the storage device with respect to the electricity spot price. A projected successive over-relaxation coupled with the semi-Lagrangian method is implemented, and we explore the use of boundary-fitted coordinates techniques.

Die mobilisering van lidmate in 'n tipiese AGS gemeente,Robertsham.Putter, Andries Petrus 25 February 2008 (has links)
The aim of this study was to research the content of the Robertsham AFM congregation, as well as to identify growth areas in the congregation and to design and implement guidelines for mobilisation. The Robertsham AFM congregation was evaluated, in order to determine its profile at the commencement of the study. This profile enabled the pastor to offer members of the congregation the opportunity to join the growth towards bigger involvement. Questionnaires were used to conduct the evaluation. The mobilisation process of the Robertsham AFM congregation was preceded by a preparatory process, during which the pastor as well as the congregation were prepared. Church leaders had to be prepared in terms of mobilisation, a serious reflection on their reason for existence (raison d¡¦etre) and the way ahead. The upliftment of both the congregation and members of the congregation contributed as follows: ƒá The way members of the congregation experienced God, was promoted by positive preaching, word school presentations and spiritual growth classes. The church going experience of the congregation was enhanced, by implementing specific essential actions. ƒá The image of a congregation that had been uplifted created pride within members of the congregation. Currently, more members of the community are aware of what Robertsham AFM congregation stands for. ƒá Member¡¦s experience of their fellow human beings was promoted by interpersonal relationships and by creating specific opportunities. ƒá The needs of poor members of the community were addressed by implementing a number of services. These services also promoted job creation. Eight quality characteristics of growing churches, according to CA Schwarz, are currently still being used to evaluate and monitor the congregational context. A questionnaire was used to determine to what extent members of the congregation benefitted from the development process at an early stage. Testimonies from members of the congregation were provided to supplement the personal enrichment process. The research demonstrated the importance of knowledge of the background of members of the congregation, as well as the profile of the congregation. The preparation of the pastor is of importance, in order for the mobilisation process to support and promote the correct upliftment, resources and development of members of the congregation. The research contributes towards mobilising and structuring the Robertsham AFM congregation in such a way that it will result in members of the congregation developing their potential to the maximum. In turn, this will enable them to help develop other people¡¦s potential to the maximum. / Prof. W.J. Hattingh

Documentary Film: I Named Her AngelDinc, Nefin 05 1900 (has links)
Recent political developments in the world show us that different cultures need to know and understand each other better. Even though technological developments like the Internet, satellites, cable television and conglomeration of big media entities have made mass communication more effective and faster, we cannot easily say that these developments help to bring world cultures together. As a result, mass audiences are not very much able to see what few productions do speak to these issues in a constructive manner. The main aim of this documentary film project is to serve as a small step towards helping different cultures to understand each other better. This documentary film conveys the basics of Mevlevism by following the formal gatherings of a Mevlevi den in Istanbul, Turkey. A den or tekke is a place where Islamic people gather and perform their religious activities. During these gatherings they do the sema, they pray, they listen to music, and they discuss spiritual matters. Sema is the entire ritual they perform as part of their ceremonies including listening to music, singing and chanting to attain a state of religious emotion and ecstasy or vecd. The documentary film is structured around a twelve year old girl, Elif, who is learning the basics of Mevlevism. The interviews conducted with regulars from the den explain to the audience why people are attracted to this belief system. Filming the ceremonies at the 550-year-old Mevlevi temple in Galata, Istanbul accentuates the historic background of this belief system. The Night of Reunion is the day in which Mevlevis celebrate the passing of Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi, the founder of Mevlevism and provides the climax of the film. Elif performs on that night, a very important moment in her spiritual life.

This research aimed to identify convergences in mediation work of record producers during the movimento do pagode of the 1980s and 1990s. Samba made in the rodas de pagode in the 1980s, commercially known as pagode - more recently called rootsy samba -, is characterized by musicologists as the representative of restricted communities and samba tradition. Likewise, musicologists often characterize the artists that emerged in the 1990s - and had their work classified as pagode - as incorporators of foreign and modern elements to the samba, creating a "new" pagode which became known as "romantic pagode". Despite these dichotomies involving the pagode, passing the music of both segments (and periods) by a recording studio reflects a process of mediation and the figures of record producers are responsible for that within the music industry. Through the analysis of repertoire of artists connected with the pagode (in both decades) and semi-structured interviews with the record producers of those artists it was possible to identify some strategies, objectives and standards of record production that leave the pre-established boundaries less clear. Thus it can be concluded that besides the dichotomies there are many convergences for assessing the pagode in a less segmental speech - more independent of the modern-traditional, hybrid-authentic, national-international discussions that have been basing the studies on the subject. Analyzing the pagode through the prism of the record producers makes possible to identify the market as borders subtractor and distinct poles integrator / Doutorado / Fundamentos Teoricos / Doutor em Música

Street Chords and the Truth: A Street Level View of Country MusicBevins, Thomas 05 1900 (has links)
Singers and songwriters come to Nashville, Tennessee because they consider it the center of the country music universe and the best place to perform their songs as they try and break into the music business. Though few ever experience success in this competitive field, artists continue to arrive in Nashville and many don't have the commercial potential that would allow them the opportunity to perform anywhere but on the city's streets. The film, Street Chords and the Truth: A Street Level View of Country Music, focuses on these interesting performers and their music. Country music has been examined by a handful of ethnomusicologists and is often called the music of everyday life. Many recognize its dependence on ordinary singing styles, common phrasings, southern accents and traditional costuming as central to its identity and critical source of its value as a commodity. While many studies have been conducted focusing commercially popular country music singers and the music industry, few studies been conducted on singers who meet all the critical criteria for country music except commercial viability. This documentary examines country music more as a critical element of cultural identity and less as a commodity.
