I’m Not Who I Am: Self-Presentation In Online CommunitiesCross, Aaron Christian January 2019 (has links)
This dissertation was performed with the aim of understanding more about how people interact with and deceive one another in an online context. To build that understanding, the study was motivated by five research questions: (1) How do users experience the process of misrepresenting themselves to others? (2) How do users present themselves in online contexts in which they may not feel comfortable with portraying themselves fully? (3) How do perceived norms and expectations within groups inform users’ self-presentations? (4) How do users’ perceptions of who will view their information impact self-representation? (5) How do perceived affordances impact how users feel they can engage in deceptive practices? To explore and answer these questions, 27 interviews were conducted via the social networking platform Discord with members of the r/Fantasy server. The findings from the research show that how users perceive the potential audiences they have in a group setting is impacted by what they perceive the affordances of the platform to be. In turn, these perceptions influence what users care to share about themselves and how and if they engage in deceptive practices with other group members, both of which are also motivated by a desire to fit in and be accepted by the group at large. These findings provide insight into how users interact with and deceive one another, but also open up room for future research into the intersection of affordances and audiences and how users modify how they present themselves in relation to those perceived components of the online experience.

Quantum correlations and measurements in tri-partite quantum systems.Idrus, Bahari bin January 2011 (has links)
Correlations and entanglement in a chain of three oscillators A,B,C with
nearest neighbour coupling is studied. Oscillators A,B and B,C are coupled
but there is no direct coupling between oscillators A,C. Examples with initial
factorizable states are considered, and the time evolution is calculated. It
is shown that the dynamics of the tri-partite system creates correlations and
entanglement among the three oscillators and in particular, between oscillators
A,C which are not coupled directly. We have performed photon number
selective and non-selective measurements on oscillator A and we investigated
their effects on the correlations and entanglement. It is shown that, before
the measurement, the correlations between oscillators A,C can be stronger
than the correlations of oscillators A,B. Moreover, some entanglement witness
shows that oscillators A,C are entangled but the oscillators A,B might
or might not be entangled. By using quantum discord, which measures the
quantumness of correlations, it is shown that there are quantum correlations
between oscillators A,B and after the measurements in both cases of selective
and non-selective measurements, oscillators A,B and A,C become classically
correlated. / Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia and Universiti Kebangsaan, Malaysia.

Recently, the different formulations of General Quantum Correlations (GQCs) - quantum discord and quantum coherence, based on entropic and geometric arguments, have been extensively investigated and characterized. Following their behavior under decoherence is one of the remarkable points in quantum information theory, as the presence of surprisingly phenomena like sudden-change and freezing can be useful to exploit those resources. From the experimental side, nuclear spins appear as excellent candidates to test benching GQCs related phenomena, since they are easily manipulated by the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) method and, in this context, are naturally subject to well characterized environments equivalent to Phase Damping (PD) and Generalized Amplitude Damping (GAD) Channels. Our proposal here is, after an overview of theoretical developments in GQCs decoherence characterization, provide experimental proofs through NMR. All the characterization is made for Bell diagonal states (2 qubit systems), or, in more general cases, for MN3 states. First of all, the double sudden-change phenomenon is investigated in two different 2 qubit systems, each one affected by PD and GAD separately. This allowed the observation of the pointer basis emergence in the PD case, as theoretically predicted. Second, the freezing phenomenon appearence conditions are investigated in 2, 3 and 4 qubit systems, where heteronuclear molecules were employed as setup and independent PD channels act on. The freezing phenomenon is experimentally observed in systems with an even number of qubits. For discord-like measures, the freezing remains constant an amount of time determined by the initial state, however in the coherence-like case it endures forever. All those results agree with the theoretical predictions. To generalize those results, it was also proved that Bell diagonal states provide a lower bond of coherence to general states that are characterized for the same correlation triple.

In bipartite systems, it is known that entanglement formation and quantum discord are different for mixed states. There is no clear relations between them apparently. However, when considering pure three-partite systems, have the conservation law which establishe a distribution of entanglement and discord through the subsystems. The sum of entanglements of a particular subsystem with the other ones is equal to the sum of discords betweell the same subsystems. Therefore, the bipartite entanglements can not be increased without increasing by the same amount the sum of discords. In this work, we derive relations between entanglement and discord for systems of 4, 5 and 6 parts. Notably, the relation between the entanglement and discord for even and odd number of systems are different. For even number of parts, relationships are inequalities, while for the odd number of parts, they are equalities, for which demonstrate its generalization. We also use the relation between thermodynamic work and discord to relate the sum of entanglements of formation with the difference in the performance of between quantum and classical Maxwell's Demon.

A retrieval-based chatbot ́s opinion on the trolley problemBjörklin, Hampus, Abrahamsson, Tim, Widenfalk, Oscar January 2021 (has links)
The goal of this project was to create a chatbot capable of debating a user using limited resources including a discussion thread from the online debate forum Kialo. A retrieval based bot was designed and the discussion thread was converted into a database which the bot could interpret and choose an appropriate answer from. Which answer is appropriate is decided by the bot using a few key features in a given input sentence. The main features are word similarity, sentiment distance and BERT-encoding (a model for vector representation of text created by Google). The similarity of these features where then used to score claims from the dataset. Combining and weighting the scores was then used to find the correct response to a given input sentence. The most successful of the features was BERT-encoding. Once the bot had been refined it was brought online and tested using the communication platform Discord.

Channelling the Community: Discord Users' Understanding of Community and Mental IllnessChin, Christine Elliot 22 December 2021 (has links)
In marginalized communities, humour has been used to manage stigma in internet spaces which facilitate the gathering of individuals with stigmatizing commonalities. This thesis endeavours to show the methods that emerge from internet communities, specifically through the platform Discord, that are used to redefine how information about mental illness is conveyed and how it entails personal interaction. Focused on the way depression memes are interpreted by users of the Discord, and how the need for humour is used as a tool to distance oneself from interpersonal relationships, I have examined how the fear of being labelled mentally ill still manifests itself within a space originally intended for transgressive content. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in Discord's 2meirl4meirl server, and consisting of participant observation as well as informal interviews, I argue that users, by attempting to shed from themselves their marginalized status by interacting in Discord, introduce new, but faulty, methods of stigma management.

Does your gender impact your experience inregulated esports communities? Analyzingexperiences and contributions from participants inan esports Discord serverEliasson, Lucas January 2023 (has links)
With the growth of esports in recent years, it has become important to study different aspects of thedigital footprints that come with it. Esport is a form of sport competition using video games whereplayers or teams compete against each other using certain games in a competitive environment, governed by rules and regulations. Teams competing in esports work in a similar way as othersports teams. They try to win competitions and build their own fan base. Some fans want tocome closer to the team and other individuals supporting that specific team. Teams create serverson Discord that allows their fan base to interact with each other in a more regulated community. The servers mainly promote the team itself, but they also offer fans opportunities for exclusivecontent and discussions away from public social media channels. Gaming has however been provento offer a toxic environment, specifically against gender minorities. This article investigates howdifferent genders experience toxicity in the more regulated online gaming communities comparedto previously researched areas - multiplayer games, and public social forums.
