Volunteering Within Forced Migration and the Role of Identity : The Context of International Volunteers Working to Support Ukrainian Refugees in Poland

Lang Møller, Sarah January 2023 (has links)
This study investigated the motivations and experiences of international volunteers’ who recently worked to support Ukrainian refugees in Poland. The study was particularly interested in exploring volunteers’ individual retrospective accounts, and what role the phenomenon of identity played before, during, and after volunteering. Six semi-structured interviews were conducted, and the study made use of Richard Jenkin’s (2014) theory on social identity. The study found the motivations to support Ukrainian refugees in Poland were influenced by an intertwining of individual and collective identification processes. It found that the interviewees’ self-identifications, whilst volunteering, were constructed based on the principles of similarities and differences, as well as on interactions. In addition, the study found that struggles concerning identity in the post-volunteering period were linked to collective identification and senses of guilt. The study aimed to complement the existing literature by adding a qualitative study about the displacement crisis from an international volunteer lens.

Temporal Projections of the Shoreline Displacement on Gotland

Tekeste, Yonathan January 2023 (has links)
Global mean sea level rise (GMSLR) impacts the displacement of the world’s coasts and shorelinedifferently due to it being contingent on local topographic and geological conditions. The island of Gotlandis located in the Fennoscandian Shield which lies at the intersection between GMSLR and post-glacialrebound (PGR), at rates that vary latitudinally and, in some areas, are at equal levels. Therefore, the future for the shorelines on the Swedish island can be uncertain due to the shoreline displacement being non-uniform. In this thesis, Själsö, a village located on the north-eastern coast of the island with a higher GMSLR than PGR rate was studied to analyse the shoreline displacement and temporally project thepermanent inundation of the study area. Through a more a deductive analysis, the inundation of the studyarea is projected to take place in approx. 4000 yr. This result was compared with the results from anothermore inductive analysis based on finding displacement rates of the study area through satellite and aerialimagery presenting a wide-ranging results based on two particular set of data, early and late displacementrates. The former inductive results yielded a range between 177-211 yr. while the latter inductive resultsyielded a range between 500-588 yr. The inductive results suggest that the GMSLR is not the onlycontributing factor but also accounts for short-term SLR fluctuations, with the later displacementprojections being slightly more accurate than the early when comparing their results with the deductivelycalculated projection that only takes the GMSLR into consideration.

Steric-Free Bioorthogonal Labeling of Post-translational Modification Substrates Based on A Fluorine-Thiol/Selenol Displacement Reaction

Lyu, Zhigang, 0000-0002-6903-3965 January 2021 (has links)
Post-translational modifications (PTMs) diversify the functions and control the stability of proteins by the covalent addition of chemical groups or proteins. These modifications include phosphorylation, acetylation, glycosylation, methylation, ubiquitination, etc. and affect all aspects of cellular activities. Dysregulation of PTMs is often linked to aging, oncogenesis, and various autoimmune diseases. Proteins involved in the PTM writing, removing, and reading process are very important biomarkers and hot therapeutic targets. Yet, current chemical methodologies to globally profiling PTM substrates rely on coppercatalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) reaction in which bulky alkyne or azide groups in length and size are used. The intrinsic steric hinderance limits the general application of chemical reporters to metabolic incorporation by PTM writers possessing spacious active pockets. This dissertation will start with the demonstration that the alpha fluorine to amide bond was a steric free chemical reporter in protein acetylation. Fluorinated cofactors or precursors could be utilized by acetyltransferases to modify peptides and proteins both in vitro and in live cells. A novel bioorthogonal reaction named as fluorine thiol displacement reaction (FTDR) using thiophenol as the warhead was developed for converting a fluorine label in biomolecules to a fluorophore or biotin tag. This whole platform showed great potential to label, image, and enrich acetylation substrates. Another goal of this dissertation was the evolution of FTDR to fluorine selenol displacement reaction (FSeDR). Aliphatic selenol, aromatic selenol and thiol derivatives were compared in parallel in the labelling of fluorinated small molecules and proteins. Aliphatic selenol displayed the best reactivity under the mild physiological condition and exhibited a high degree of chemical stability. The updated platform was then used in the SILAC-based quantitative proteomics study of acetylation in the prostate cancer cell PC-3. The final goal of this dissertation focuses on the study of steric-free bioorthogonal labeling of glycosylation substrates based on FSeDR. The fluorine-tag labelled unnatural monosaccharides could be utilized by glycotransferases in live cells to modify sialylated glycoproteins, N-glycoproteins, and O-GlcNAcylated proteins. With the help of FSeDR, the fluorine reporter was further functionalized to fluorescent probes or affinity tags for imaging or enrichment studies. The steric-free fluorine reporter has the potential to become a powerful chemical reporter for glycan labelling. / Chemistry

Estranger Around Us

Shoaei, Paria January 2021 (has links)
My thesis project is attempting to investigate the notion of estrangement as a qualitative effect and discover various strategies and technics of estrangement in the field of architecture. These investigations will aim to design a cultural center as an institute for discovering more about the displaced situation of mankind in the twenty-first century, producing a defamiliarized aesthetic that is both alien and strangely contextual to our new cultural identity which embraces the concepts of disorientation and otherness. This center will be designed as a public exhibition and community building, integrating a high variety of programs and functions for attracting people of all ages and backgrounds, addressing the instability and fragility of our environment.Architecture is always incomplete and reliant on multiple layers of interaction and engagement, I aim to produce spaces that are challenging, lacking clear boundaries or hierarchies which demand new forms of interaction between architecture and subject, and offer a new understanding of space and material.

Densification in Bellevuegården: : Exploring the Social Lived Consequences

illerbrand, thyra January 2023 (has links)
This essay explores the effects of urban densification on residents in Bellevuegården, Malmö, focusing on the experiences of tenants and their alignment with municipal planning intentions. Densification advocated for its sustainability benefits, often leads to gentrification and displacement of vulnerable groups. By examining municipal motives and comparing them with tenant experiences, this study sheds light on the discrepancies and challenges arising from densification processes. Through interviews and surveys, the research reveals that densification has varying impacts on residents, including a decline in their daily lives and dissatisfaction with renovations and increased rental costs. The findings underscore the need to understand the direct consequences of densification on residents and to address potential gentrification issues. Furthermore, the study emphasises the importance of considering the impact on local businesses. By delving into these dynamics, this research contributes to a better understanding of the social implications of densification in vulnerable socioeconomic neighbourhoods.

Borshch Diaries: Exploring Ukrainian Women's Accounts of Belonging on Gotland

Fadieieva, Nataliia, Luteyn, Jesse, Opdenberg, Bjørn January 2023 (has links)
This research is about Ukrainian women who have been displaced by the russian invasion and are now living on Gotland. The primary objective of this study was to create a platform where they could express their experiences, thoughts, and emotions. We intended to value their voices and were committed to maintaining a human-centered and open approach in our research, prioritizing their authentic narratives over theoretical considerations.  In this exploratory study, we discovered the power of cooking and sharing food to foster connections and intimate conversations. Inspired by feminist scholar Heldke (1988), we recognized the undervalued significance of cooking in philosophical discourses and the need for a more inclusive way of thinking about knowledge. Employing cooking as inquiry as a research method allowed for a holistic exploration of personal experiences with new cultures. With Borshch as our chosen meal, we found that its traditional slow-cooking process created a safe and familiar space for meaningful conversations.  By applying Allen et al. (2021) Integrative Framework for Belonging, we sought to shed light on narratives that arise from the accounts of Ukrainian women displaced by the russian invasion. We discovered that our contributors' experiences extended beyond the boundaries of the framework. Our findings explored various narratives – from struggling to belong to reclaiming belonging, including living through war, liminality, keeping children safe, competencies, opportunities, motivations, and perceptions to belong. Through this exploration, we gained insights into their complex narratives and the dynamic nature of belonging.

A Sense of Place.

Ouzounova, Neli Ilieva 13 December 2003 (has links) (PDF)
Concerned with anxiety and displacement, the artist explores a sense of place within the self. Personal experiences are presented as an accumulation of fragmented symbols, textures and pattern. Symbolic imagery is being created, influenced by a devaluation of established norms and a reorganization of cultural identity. The individualÆs interaction and experience with the surrounding world affirms his idiosyncratic symbolism. The artwork is a visual language that through the use of disparate segments sets up the portrayal of the fragmented self and psychological journeys of the artist. Individuals establish themselves in many ways, including gestures as part of expression. This expression can be in the visual plane, such as works of art with their color and exploration of ideas. Thus there is continuity in life being established by the artist, while looking for meaning in the apprehended sense of place created in response to natural instinct and intuition.
