Bothma, Franciska January 2001 (has links)
The aim of this study was to determine whether a relationship exists between the use of self-regulation by the tertiary distance learner and his or her academic achievement in a specific academic course unit. To attain this aim, a literature study was undertaken to: a) define and describe distance learning, b) describe the nature of learning, c) describe the nature of self-regulated learning and its implications for distance learning, and d) define and classify learning strategies and indicate the relationships between self-regulated learning, the use of learning strategies, and successful learning. Literature indicated a positive relationship between self-regulation, the use of learning strategies, learning success, and academic achievement: learning success results whenever pre-formulated learning goals are attained through the use of self-regulation and applicable learning strategies; and attainment of learning goals results in positive academic achievement. Self-regulated learners, who plan their learning, formulate learning goals, motivate themselves intrinsically, instruct themselves, apply different learning strategies to attain learning goals, continuously monitor and self-evaluate themselves during the learning process, are able to attain the formulated learning goals successfully and perform well academically. The literature review also revealed a high level of self-regulation as one of the prerequisites for performing successfully as a distance learner. Planning personal learning goals, using a variety of learning strategies to attain the goals, determining the correct personal learning tempo, monitoring learning progress, and self evaluating learning outcomes are typical characteristics of self-regulation necessary for effective distance learning and academic progress. The population of the research includes the PU vir CHO - Open Learning Academy-learners registered for the Further Diploma in Educational Management, module PSD 511 (Teaching and Learning) in the North West region of South Africa. The total number of students attending the three contact sessions in September 2000 at five sentra in the North West Province, and who participated in the research, was 143. Three questionnaires were used to obtain personal information, as well as information regarding self-regulation in the learners, namely, a biographical questionnaire, the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) and the Self Regulated Learning Questionnaire (SRLQ). The data was statistically analized by means of: a) factor analyses, b) multiple regression analyses, and c) stepwise regression analyses. A difference was found to exists between the variables that determine the academic achievement of successful versus unsuccessful distance learners. Successful distance learners have better developed self-regulated learning skills than unsuccessful distance learners. / Thesis (M.Ed.)--Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education, 2001

Desenvolvimento e avaliação de um programa computacional para o ensino à distância de tecnologia de aplicação de agroquímicos / Development and evaluation of a computer program for distance learning about pesticide application technology

Maia, Bruno 13 February 2009 (has links)
Distance learning presents great potential for mitigating field problems on pesticide spraying technology. This methodology does not intend to replace live trainings, but complement them, especially considering the importance of field practices for this activity. Thus, due to the lack of teaching material about pesticide spraying technology and the increasing availability of distance learning, this study developed and evaluated a computer program for distance learning of the theory of pesticide spraying technology, using the tools of information technology. The modules comprising the course, named Pulverizar , were: (1) Basic concepts, (2) What affects spraying?, (3) Equipment, (4) Spraying nozzles, (5) Sprayer calibration, (6) Aircraft spraying, (7) Chemigation, (8) Physical-chemical properties, (9) Formulations, (10) Adjuvants, (11) Water quality, and (12) Adequate use of pesticides. The program was made available to the public on July 1st 2008, hosted at the site www.pulverizar.iciag.ufu.br, and was simple, robust and practical on the complementation of traditional teaching for the education of professionals in Agricultural Sciences. The system allows the access to the contents to professionals interested on the topic anywhere, at any time, and no cost. Mastering the pesticide spraying technology by people involved on agricultural production can be facilitated by the program Pulverizar, which was well accepted in its initial evaluation.

Learning in an Online Jazz History Class

January 2011 (has links)
abstract: This study examines the experiences of participants enrolled in an online community college jazz history course. I surveyed the participants before the course began and observed them in the online space through the duration of the course. Six students also participated in interviews during and after the course. Coded data from the interviews, surveys, and recorded discussion posts and journal entries provided evidence about the nature of interaction and engagement in learning in an online environment. I looked for evidence either supporting or detracting from a democratic online learning environment, concentrating on the categories of student engagement, freedom of expression, and accessibility. The data suggested that the participants' behaviors in and abilities to navigate the online class were influenced by their pre-existing native media habits. Participants' reasons for enrolling in the online course, which included convenience and schedule flexibility, informed their actions and behaviors in the class. Analysis revealed that perceived positive student engagement did not contribute to a democratic learning environment but rather to an easy, convenient experience in the online class. Finally, the data indicated that participants' behaviors in their future lives would not be affected by the online class in that their learning experiences were not potent enough to alter or inform their behavior in society. As online classes gain popularity, the ability of these classes to provide meaningful learning experiences must be questioned. Students in this online jazz history class presented, at times, a façade of participation and community building but demonstrated a lack of sincerity and interest in the course. The learning environment supported accessibility and freedom of expression to an extent, but students' engagement with their peers was limited. Overall, this study found a need for more research into the quality of online classes as learning platforms that support democracy, student-to-student interaction, and community building. / Dissertation/Thesis / D.M.A. Music Education 2011

Uma Proposta de autenticação de usuários para ensino a distância / A solution for user authentication for distance learning

Fiorese, Mauricio January 2000 (has links)
This work investigates different strategies and techniques of user authentication in order to determine which ones may be integrated in a distance learning environment. Several authentication solutions available on the market are analyzed in order to find the most appropriate. The criteria used to determine the best solutions involve cost or amount of equipments involved, operational simplicity, and degree of confidence or results obtained. Based on this analysis, an authentication model that integrates several authentication techniques is delineated in order to obtain greater security than those used in most distance learning systems, based only on passwords. This system works like a proxy whose function is to control access to Web pages through the combination of passwords, random queries, biometric devices and random checks, at the same time that it generates logs of student's activity during a course. These logs contain information about day and hour of access, time spent on each page, IP address of the student's machine and so on. This information can be used both to evaluate the student and to generate his/her statistical profile. This profile is used to give an alarm when the data of the profile undergo changes above the established limits, during the student's activity. A prototype of the system has been implemented to validate the solution designed. The integration of the authentication methods, which identifies both the student and the machine where he/she is working, with the evaluation routines of the distance learning procedure, is one of the main reached results.

Outros tempos, outros espaços : Internet e educação

Saraiva, Karla Schuck January 2006 (has links)
This Thesis presents a study on Distance Learning with internet support with the purpose of discussing the truths produced by narratives on this topic analyzing the interlacement of their emergency with the constitution of contemporary society. The research was developed starting from three axes: the meanings and uses of space and time, the government of subjects and the body representations. To carry through the work, I used as research material articles published in Brazilian periodicals, specialized in educational technology. The first axis of the research aims to verify the space-time representations in narratives on education via internet and to analyze its interrelation with the meanings given to those elements in the Contemporaneity. In the second axis, I discuss a notion of freedom that has been related with Distance Learning. I also question whether the kidnapping practices are being renewed by the use of subtler government methods which are capable of producing more adequate citizens to the demands of the current society. In the third axis, I analyze which meanings and uses have been attributed to the body in this educational modality and how this is articulated with the contemporary body notions. The work is divided in three parts. In the first one, Connecting..., I present a little of my trajectory and establish the work proposal. In the second part, Verifying the Password..., I construct a theoretical frame that supports the research. This frame is composed by the analyses related to the research axes. For each one of them I briefly present its discontinuities and inflections from Middle Age to the present. Besides these aspects, the theoretical frame is also composed by a study on the emergency and uses of the internet and a brief historical of Distance Learning. In the third part of the work, that I called Free Access, I describe and analyze some statements extracted from articles on the three axes of research that had been unfolded in 18 categories of analysis. I also present some representations that have been constituted about Distance Learning, as well as some analytical contributions to understand these practices and their effects.

Oliveira, Paulo Cristiano de January 2006 (has links)
As organizações têm buscado conquistar vantagem competitiva sustentável. / Organizations have been trying to build a sustainable competitive advantage. To achieve this, several business techniques have been adopted, specially the Criteria of Excellency of the National Quality Foundation (FNQ in Brazil). Parallel to this, training collaborators using Distance Learning Systems (DLS) may be understood as a natural process on the increase of competition, as they are speed and adaptable to new concepts, techniques and managerial practices. This dissertation purposes a way to evaluate the DLS of Senac EaD of Rio Grande do Sul State and tries to find its possible interface with Criteria of FNQ. This study also intended to be characterized as an action research, and counted with the participation of seven employees of different hierarchy levels of the Senac EaD. The first step raised the employees initial perception and also described the Quality Program and the DLS of the Company. Further to this, the researcher has created fifteen criteria based on the Quality References by Brazilian Education Ministry (MEC) which have been validated by the participants. The participants also made an evaluation of the Senac DLS that showed the criteria “Contingency”, “Evaluation”, “Legislation”, “Market” and “External opportunities” as "partially satisfactory". The researcher also has purposed four Orientation Points, based on PDCA Cicle, which have been associated by the participants with the criteria from the previous step. It was also noticed that the participants have faced difficulties to associate the Orientation Points within the following criteria: “Contingency”, “Accompaniment”, “Education”, “Information”, “Interaction”, “Legislation”, “Project” and “Technology” After, the researcher has analyzed the possible relations or interfaces between the criteria purposed by this research and the Criteria of FNQ. It was observed that while associating both evaluations, may indicate the necessity of going deeper in the criteria elaborated by this research which probably must go beyond the Quality References by MEC. Notwithstanding, participants have eventually emphasized their acceptance to the results of the evaluation as well as to the team participation on the research. They have also indicated potential improvements on the SeaD of the Senac EaD based on the evaluation process made, which may consolidate the Scheme proposed on the study.

No. of bitstreams: 1 RODRIGO OLIVEIRA SANTOS.pdf: 3668262 bytes, checksum: 4585fc0576174b16baf39275ac9893b0 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-03-22 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This study, linked to the research line "Training of Educators" of the Postgraduate Program in Education of the Universidade Metodista de São Paulo, aimed to promote a reflection on the evaluation process to which Higher Education Institutions are subject. Presential Support Pole, offer Distance Higher Education in Brazil. The social and economic changes that have taken place over the last decades emphasize the need for such reflection, considering the growth of enrollments in distance education courses and their representativeness in the offer of Higher Education nowadays. Thus, from the legal organization and the current regulatory evaluative process, it became necessary to understand the role of the University as an educational institution, its interaction with technology and the conditions to which the evaluation interprets this confluence on the qualitative character. In this context, the perspective of those who experience this evaluative process, in the position of evaluated, was necessary so that the express was its interpretation on the social and economic importance of such modality. Therefore, the work sought to investigate: What perceptions emerge from the narratives of the professionals who work in the Distance Learning when they reflect on the evaluation processes carried out by INEP / MEC? As a quality, does current evaluative practice accurately understand the complex relationship between the actors involved in the process of knowledge transmission in what structurally refers to a Presential Support Pole and its involvement with the community where it is inserted? From the theoretical point of view, to understand Higher Education and University (CASPER; HUMBOLDT, 2003; DIAS SOBRINHO, 2010; DEMO, 2010; SANTOS, 2011), the role of EAD (Moore, KEARSLEY, 2013; DRON, 2015) As well as the discussions about the interaction of society and education with technology (PINTO, 2005; LÉVY, 1999; GABRIEL, 2015) until reaching the evaluative relations to qualify the offer of courses and programs supported by new means of communication (DIAS SOBRINHO, And the evaluation of the quality of this study. Still, the reflections on the themes that emerge from narratives (CLANDININ; CONNELY, 2005; FREIRE, 2012, 2015) have become key to the opening of new understandings on the proposed theme. The corpus consists of six hermeneutical interviews / conversations that took place between 2015 and 2016. From the hermeneutic-phenomenological analysis emerged from the narratives of the participants' experiences on the evaluation process of the Distance Learning on the Presential Support Pole, reflections on the paths adopted and its impacts on the organization and offer of courses and on institutions in Brazil.
