Augustine’s Just War Theory in a South African Context : a Church Perspective

Baleng, Godfrey T. January 2015 (has links)
The fundamental elements that shaped and gave rise to Christianity as a dominant religious movement rest in the crucifixion, death and resurrection of the person of Jesus of Nazareth. Had there been no crucifixion and had Jesus died a natural death, there would be no foundation for the Christian gospel as we have it today. Jesus had to die a violent death and be a human sacrifice in order for him to be a historical figure that he is today. My point in departure is to highlight that the events that constitute history are in many aspects very violent in nature. Therefore, it may not be a great exaggeration to conclude that the shedding and spilling of blood is necessary in the making of history, since war and history are so joined together like Siamese twins. War is so much part of our lives, it is said that only the dead have seen the end of it. And history according to James Joyce, is a nightmare from which [he is] trying to awake. Such has been the explicit nature of Just War Theory as it is rooted in the backdrop of Christian conviction. This thesis seeks to illuminate the topic of Just War Theory from a Church and Augustinian perspective. It demonstrates how Augustine’s writings are a rich resources for theological, political and judicial reflection on international politics. It critically examines the connection between Church and State, that is to say, the origins of the Just War Theory. Further, it goes on to demonstrate that for Augustine the two are intertwined and God ordained. It draws conclusions for current Just War practices as outdated since its failure to attain world-peace. / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2015. / tm2015 / Church History and Church Policy / MA / Unrestricted

Matrices of Vision : Sonic Disruption of a Dataset

Toll, Abigail January 2021 (has links)
Matrices of Vision is a sonic deconstruction of a higher education dataset compiled by the influential Swedish higher education authority Universitetskanslersämbetet (UKÄ). The title Matrices of Vision and project theme is inspired by Indigenous cyberfeminist, scholar and artist Tiara Roxanne’s work into data colonialism. The method explores how practical applications of sound and theory can be used to meditate on political struggles and envision emancipatory modes of creation that hold space through a music-making practice. The artistic approach uses just intonation as a system, or grid of fixed points, which it refuses. The pitch strategy diverges from this approach by way of its political motivations: it disobeys just intonation’s rigid structure through practice and breaks with its order as a way to explore its experiential qualities. The approach seeks to engage beyond the structures designed to regulate behaviors and ways of perceiving and rather hold space for a multiplicity of viewpoints which are explored through cacophony, emotion and deep listening techniques.

Benchmarking Jit: An Analysis of Jit Implementations in the Manufacturing Service and Public Sectors

Yasin, Mahmoud M., Wafa, Marwan, Small, Michael H. 01 December 2004 (has links)
Investigates several facets of the implementation of just-in-time (JIT) using a two-tiered empirical approach that included a field study and a mailed survey. The 277 respondents to the survey included 130 manufacturing organizations, 61 service organizations and 86 public sector organizations in the USA. Five hypotheses were tested. The results indicate that while all the organization types had enacted procedural and operational modifications in support of their JIT implementations, there were some differences in the impact that these modifications had in reducing problems during the implementation and on the eventual outcome of the project. Suggests areas where benchmarking can be utilized by the various organization types to alleviate potential problems in the JIT implementation process and to improve their chances of success.

Just-in-Time Implementation in the Public Sector: An Empirical Examination

Yasin, Mahmoud M., Wafa, Marwan A., Small, Michael H. 01 December 2001 (has links)
The effective implementation of just-in-time (JIT) in the US public sector is examined in this empirical study. Specifically, the relationships between organizational modification efforts prior to JIT implementation, problems encountered during implementation and JIT success are investigated using a sample of 86 public sector organizations. The results of this research seem to support the notion that JIT, as a form of "managerialism", has the potential to increase the operational efficiency, service quality and organizational effectiveness of public sector organizations. However, for this potential to be achieved, public sector organizations, like their private sector counterparts, must be willing to modify their procedures and operations. The potential benefits of JIT to public sector organizations are not in doubt. However, the art of designing the right JIT implementation strategy for such organizations is debatable. Therefore, issues related to these concerns are worthy of future research. This study is a modest contribution toward that end.

Lean Healthcares spridning och översättning : en PMI-studie och innehållsanalys över Lean Healthcare i svensk sjukvård

Dalbom, Emil, Danielsson, Ludvig January 2020 (has links)
This study examines Lean Healthcare, which is a concept originally from the industrial sector with the intention to, among other things, minimize errors and facilitate time savings. The concept has later been adapted to healthcare. The theoretical framework assumes that management concepts follows a fashion in which there are fluctuations in popularity during its lifecycle. The concept also goes through a translation process as it travels. A PMI study examines the popularity of the concept in media and analyses how it has varied over the life span. A quantitative content analysis is then used on a selection of the collected material to see how the concept has been translated through the media. The result shows that Lean Healthcare largely follows the traditional life cycle of management concepts but deviates in the form of a second upturn. The concept has been translated from a positive view where arguments such as resource saving and streamlining were highlighted to a negative presentation where a vulnerability from Just-in-time was used as an argument.

Quality Management Model Based on Lean Six Sigma for Reducing Returns of Defective Clothing Articles in SMEs from the Clothing Industry

Pacheco-Bonilla, Maday, Cespedes-Blanco, Carlos, Raymundo, Carlos, Mamani-Macedo, Nestor, Dominguez, Francisco 01 January 2020 (has links)
El texto completo de este trabajo no está disponible en el Repositorio Académico UPC por restricciones de la casa editorial donde ha sido publicado. / Even though there is a high demand for clothing articles in the market, they do not meet quality standards. This can be appreciated after the clothes are washed and dried and the study revealed that over 20% of the items were returned each month. This occurs when the acquisition of raw materials is focused exclusively on the price. Thus, there are no requirements for compliance with any technical specifications that would enable the production process to be equipped with quality raw materials. Additionally, the absence of control over the quantity of consumables based on demand generates reprocessed inventory, thus damaging the fabric. Therefore, the proposed model was made through the Lean Six Sigma method to reduce waste and meet client requirements. The results were a decrease in returns by over 16.5% and an increase in productivity by 28.5%.

An examination of coal mining versus renewable energy: How this “Just Transition” is starting to heal Southern Appalachia’s land and people.

Johnson, Ron, Scheirer, Olivia, Thibeault, Deborah 25 April 2023 (has links)
Coal Mining has been the economic backbone of many communities in Southern Appalachia for over a century. As our nation and the world begin to feel the concrete effects of climate change, communities need to prepare for the necessary transition to renewable energy. We sought to gain a better understanding of how the transition away from industrial coal mining into renewable energy sources has changed the lives of not only the miners and their families but also the community at large, presently. Results were limited to peer reviewed academic journal materials and publications that are published by reputable and relevant sources with publication dates ranging from 2013 to 2023. The Key Search Terms were: “Coal” “Appalachia” “Renewable” “Energy” and “Just Transition.” Of the 109 articles that resulted roughly 82 were eliminated due to not aligning fully with our topic. Another 14 were removed because they did not deal with Appalachia. Out of the 13 remaining, eight were from scholarly journals, three were from scientific websites, and two were from both a book and a doctoral dissertation concerning the “Just Transition.” The review of our chosen sources supports the facts that there is a social movement away from coal and into renewable energy resources. The growing pains associated with this transformation have been taxing for the communities involved but, research indicates, the gains from new renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and geothermal far outweigh any temporary financial booms gained from continuing to invest community resources in mining coal and cutting timber. These outdated modes of wealth accumulation have proven to be both harmful and ephemeral. The cost in the deteriorating health of both the miners and their families has been catastrophic for Appalachians. Black Lung and other pulmonary ailments as well as the Opioid Epidemic have lowered average life expectancies for the first time in generations. The transition into both natural gas and the use of renewables has made coal companies cut costs in both supervision and safety. The results have crippled and disabled many coal miners, driven them to the use of powerful opioids and the resulting black market even caused a small coal mine support town in Southwest Virginia, Norton, to become the “Oxycontin Capital of the World.” The technologies involved with renewable energy sources and subsequent cleaning up of the environment around reclaimed mines will create more jobs than the mines ever did and the extra capital will allow these towns, communities, and this region to grow robust and thriving public service and utility infrastructures that will heal both the great land and great people of Southern Appalachia.

Just in Time och Samlastning : Logistiska strategier för ökad effektivitet, minskade kostnader och förbättrad responsivitet / Just-in-Time and Consolidation : Logistical strategies for increased efficiency, reduced costs, and enhanced responsiveness

Abed, Hanna, Obradovac, Edim January 2023 (has links)
Abstract The purpose of this study is to deepen the knowledge and understanding of the strategies “just in time” and “freight pooling” in logistics management in the food industry. In order to answer the purpose, we had two different research questions. The questions are about what advantages and disadvantages there are with these strategies in the food industry. The study is conducted in a qualitative way where the interviews and observations are used to deepen the knowledge of how an organization in food industries uses the strategies “just in time” and “freight pooling”. The previous science shows that there are some advantages with these strategies but also disantvages that the organization should have in mind and work with so that they do not happen. The study shows that the organization this study was conducted on where very successful in implementing these strategies and they experienced many advantages by using “just in time” and “freight pooling”. The organization this study was conducted on were really cautious with the possible setbacks that the strategies can so they emphasized that they need to work really close with all the involved parties so that they can minimize the risk for the disadvantages to happen.  Keywords: just in time, pooling, logistic strategies, transport optimization, food supply chain
