Williams, Verónica 10 April 2018 (has links)
The Power of the State and the Material Culture in KollasuyuIdeology is a central element of cultural systems. It is also a source of social power particularly as it relates to the capacity of the state to control and manage the social work of a group of people to obtain benefits. This study analyzes the Inka manipulation of power in the attempt to achieve domination and control of native populations in the Calchaqui and Yocavil valleys of Northwest Argentina (NOA), between AD 1000-AD 1536. These processes are viewed through the study of the coercive and symbolic role of architecture and the production and use of symbolic objects, specially ceramics. The contest between native societies from NOA and the Inka State is understood as a key process in the structuration of social relationships and the manipulation of power in this region.

The Common Uncanny: Ghostlore and the Creation of Virginia History

Pirok, Alena R. 04 July 2017 (has links)
Ghost stories have a long and diverse history, they appeared in religious contexts, in secular traditions, in entertainment, and in therapy and healing. Few elements of human culture have been as dynamic as the idea that the dead return to the living world as immaterial beings. Since the late nineteenth century Virginians have used ghost stories to talk about, interpret, and understand the historical significance of place. This dissertation argues that Virginians have used ghost stories to identify and make meaning of historical sites since the turn of the last century. These historical ghost stories sought to highlight the presence of the past, as well as Virginians’ close relationship with long-dead historical figures. Virginias used the ghost stories to argue that the commonwealth’s old structures and cities were especially historical and worthy of restoration. Founders of historical sites in Virginia used ghost stories as a way to offer their guests emotional, intimate, and personal connects to the celebrated past. The stories erased the distance of time, and suggested that past and present people cohabited in specifically defined historical places. Scholars who study historical sites often focus on the transition from volunteer to professional museum and public history workers. They argue that the professionalized workers rejected and silenced the public’s emotional understandings of place-based history, gave rise to more nuanced understandings of the field, and developed rich discussions on the roles that race, class, and gender play at historical sites. In that turn scholars have tended to ignore the publics’ emotional fascinations with historical sites, as seen through ghost stories. This dissertation illustrates that hauntings’ meanings and associations outlasted the professional turn and not helped establish the public’s trust in professional historical institutions, but continue to do so in the present day.

It's a Good Life If You Don't Weaken: Taking Care of a Small Farm In Ontario

Everett-Fry, Rachel 05 May 2021 (has links)
Small-scale animal agriculture is a fruitful site for examining the relationships among humans, animals, and the land. This thesis endeavours to show what practices are constitutive of these relationships and, moreover, that establishing the “right” relationships between them are ethical concerns with both analytical and ecological import. Basing myself on fieldwork consisting of participant observation, informal interviews, and filmmaking on a small farm in Ontario, I argue that: dominion is the position from which the farm is cared for; that maintaining the farm is both reproductive and generative of the ethical subject; and that the indeterminacies involved in this maintenance might be resolved or unresolved depending on one’s position in regard to the local farming tradition.

Conceptualizing Regional International Societies: Examining the Post-Soviet Space

Manning, Chelsea Alizabeth 06 June 2017 (has links)
This thesis contributes to the English school's growing literature on regional level international societies. Thus far English school scholars have demonstrated the existence of a post-Soviet regional international society. However, what is lacking is a clear defining of the members and institutions of this society. This paper gives particular attention to three questions: who are the actors, what are the primary and secondary institutions, and what role do these institutions play within the post-Soviet regional international society? Doing so contributes to the growing literature on the post-Soviet sub-global international society. In addition, it may be the case that Russian dominion is reflected through the network of secondary institutions in the post-Soviet international society. This thesis further investigates how the creation of this diplomatic structure allows Russia to contest the global diplomatic structure and project its great power status. / Master of Arts

Território e estratégia de assentamento Guarani na planície sudoeste da Laguna dos Patos e Serra do Sudeste-RS / Guarani settlement strategy and territory on the Southwest plain of Laguna dos Patos and Southeast Mountain Range - RS

Milheira, Rafael Guedes 13 June 2008 (has links)
The dissertation Guarani Settlement Strategy and Territory on the Southwest Plain of Laguna dos Patos and Southeast Mountain Range - RS has had as the central aim to make a study of regional archaeology, which it has been searched to comprehend the systemic relations of Guarani occupation on a space that takes the low land from Laguna dos Patos southwest border and the high land from southeast mountain range (Serra do Sudeste). From a regional approach, it has searched to identify and to analyze archeological sites, to survey and to comprehend their conservative situation, as well as it has aimed to study the archeological structures and artifact ensemble, so then we can realize the Guarani occupation on its territorial distribution and their functional, economical, and symbolical meanings. On this way, the association of the archeological settlement spatial data distribution, of the techno-tipological analyses systematization, of the archeological sites composition and of the ethnografic and ethnohistorical information, it has allowed to build up a long duration historic view, in which was realized the Guarani groups undertook social web maintenance strategies and intercultural contacts, constituting a territory dominion that articulates itself between the distinct environmental stratum of the region.

Sillar, Bill, Dean, Emily 10 April 2018 (has links)
Ethnic Identity under Inka Rule: An Archaeological and Ethnohistoric Assessment of the Effects of the Inka State on the Canas Ethnic GroupCieza de Leon describes how after agreeing to an amnesty with Inka Viracocha the Canas ethnic group became major allies of the Inka and relocated their settlements away from the hill tops and down onto the valley floor. In this paper we will consider these claims in the light of archaeological evidence for changes and continuities within the Canas territory during the Late Intermediate and Inka periods. This will be primarily based upon the results of survey, architectural analysis, excavations and artifact studies within a 520 km2 survey area around the site of Cacha/Raqchi. We will describe the very limited effect which inclusion within the Inka Empire seems to have had on local settlement organization as well as examing the administrative apparatus that the Inka state located within the Canas territory. We will evaluate what this archaeological evidence tells us about how the Inka treated their allies and to what degree local ethnic identity can be recognized before, during, and following incorporation into the Inka Empire. Finally, we will contrast the Canas situation with the factors that led to the development of an "Inka" identity in the Cuzco region prior to the emergence of the Inka state.
