Biblical interpretation as social discourse: a study of reconstructive religious discourse in post-colonial Democratic Republic of Congo

Epombo-Mwenge, Joseph Bolandza 11 1900 (has links)
The contribution of the Church to the reconstruction of a nation is the primary reason for the present study. The paradox image that the Democratic Republic of Congo presents deserves particular attention. With more than 80% of DRC population being Christians, this study strives to examine the current Christian religious discourse in the DRC and to see in what way this discourse can be ameliorated in order to play properly the role of facilitating a positive transformation of this country. Notwithstanding I have been alienated from the country for some years now, the study analyzes the current situation on the ground on the basis of the data available, and makes some recommendations in order for the situation in the DRC to be ameliorated. This study thus urges a reconstructive Christian religious discourse in the hope of changing the nation’s mentality in order to reconstruct this beautiful Country. / New Testament / M. Div. reInterpret deIndustrial Dominion Bridge

Bonnetta, Elizabeth M. 21 January 2008 (has links)
This project explores a reinterpretation process of a deindustrial site through landscape architecture. By using the industrial process to guide the formation of the landscape, spaces, and experiences, a semi-abandoned industrial site is transformed into a cultural park. The purpose of the project is to articulate the intriguing qualities of a deindustrial site and respond to them through a design process that is sensitive to the history and character of the site, while allowing contemporary uses and experiences to evolve. / February 2008

The Hour of God? : People in Guatemala Confronting Political Evangelicalism and Counterinsurgency (1976-1990)

Melander, Veronica January 1999 (has links)
This dissertation is focused on one of many aspects of religion and politics in Guatemala in recent history (1976-1990). This period is characterized by unequal wealth distribution, ethnic divisions, civil war, and U.S. influence. It is a contemporary mission history examining missionary efforts directed from the United States, Guatemalan responses, and indigenous initiatives. The problem concerns a movement within Protestant evangelicalism, which in this study is called Political Evangelicalism, and its relationship to the counterinsurgency war which the Guatemalan military waged against guerrillas, political opposition, and the Mayan majority. The problem centers on the following interrelated questions: How did Political Evangelicalism appear in Guatemala and how did it develop? How did agents of Political Evangelicalism act? What kind of discourse was employed to legitimize armed and structural violence? What was the relationship between Political Evangelicalism and counterinsurgency strategy? Political Evangelicalism must be reflected through different actors and aspects of Guatemalan conflicts to be understood. Therefore, Political Evangelicalism is placed in the broader context of the Guatemalan situation and its relation to the United States. This is a chronological study describing the role and development of Political Evangelicalism on three levels: the relationship between the United States and Guatemala; Guatemala on the national level; and an in-depth study of the Ixil people. The focal point is on the Guatemalan national level. A wide array of empirical material is employed, including interviews, unpublished documents, official documents, booklets, articles, and so on.

Wetland Conversion to large-scale agricultural production; implications on the livelihoods of rural communities, Yala Swamp, Lake Victoria basin, Kenya.

Kinaro, Zachary January 2008 (has links)

Wetlands in most parts of the world are under threat of over-exploitation, loss and/or degradation partly due to agriculture and urban land uses.

Yala swamp, the largest fresh water wetland in Kenya measuring about 17,500 ha supports a large biodiversity and is source of livelihoods to communities around it. This study addresses the situation where part of this wetland is converted into large-scale agriculture by a multinational company, Dominion Farms (K) Ltd resulting into a conflict and controversy amongst key stakeholders. The study sought to investigate livelihood impacts this transformation has for the local community. It employs the concepts Stakeholder Analysis (SA) and Sustainable Livelihood Approaches (SLA) to asses the livelihood situation in terms of socio-economic conditions, rural infrastructure, income diversification, food security and environmental issues.

Data and information have been obtained from primary and secondary sources through field survey at the Yala wetland, in which randomly sampled small-scale farmers, fisher folk, Dominion employees, local leaders and informants, traders and other stakeholders were interviewed using questionnaire and other participatory methods. The main questions were designed to gain information about historical use of the wetland, changes in livelihoods and wetland before and after entry of Dominion Company into the area. From the study, it is evident that assessment of the key stakeholders in relation to this natural resource is of utmost importance for mapping out an acceptable management strategy for the wetland. Besides being cause to a conflict and controversy over control of and access to the swamp, the conversion has resulted into both negative and positive short-term and long-term livelihood impacts to the local community. The wetland being a contested resource with multiple users who claim a stake on it requires a holistic approach in its management that caters for divergent needs and views of key stakeholder groups. The study identifies management issues and proposes abroad vision for the future including recommendations for planning as well as suggestions for specific research needs that should form the basis of action

Talking on their fingers: a study of the Ontario deaf according to the 1891 Canadian Census

Wakefield, Christina L. 26 August 2009 (has links)
This thesis examines the lives of the deaf in late nineteenth century Ontario through a statistical analysis of a dataset from the 1891 Canadian Census. I examine the characteristics of the deaf as compared to the hearing population of Ontario in terms of age, sex, marital status, occupation and geographical distribution. Though there are many statistical differences between the deaf and hearing populations, I am able to show how the availability of a formal education for the deaf in the form of the Ontario Institution for the Deaf and Dumb in Belleville, Ont, had begun to minimize the effects of these differences. Education also allowed for the creation of a socially active Ontario deaf community, held together by the Ontario Deaf-Mute Association and the Ontario Mission for the Deaf.

The mapping process relied on analysis of the domain, conducting surveys that involved issues ranging from determining the appropriate side view until the capture of terms and concepts contained in the sources of information about the analyzed field. The corpus of study selected is classified by the Instituto do Patrimônio Artístico Histórico Nacional IPHAN, as Intangible Heritage. Much more of a theoretical, research purposed to describe how the lifting of a given area must be driven from its aspect of knowledge representation and how is the establishment of relations between terms and concepts, preliminary step in the development of ontologies and domain central objective of this work. No attempt to develop an ontology in the context of artificial intelligence, computational logic through, and even develop a new methodology, but the rescue and application of methods has long worked for CI today and the technologies needed for representation and retrieval of information, focusing on the Core Principles for Domains Modeling (CAMPOS, 2004). Reasoned from the strong interdisciplinary character of CI, the proposal was to map the area within the cutout area of the Intangible Heritage, through methodological triangulation, identifying the representations of signs that exist in information processes and representational knowledge based on analysis Semiotics (PEIRCE , 1977), Theory of the Concept of Dahlberg (1976) and graphical representation of conceptual maps (Novak,1995).

Bárcena, J. Roberto 10 April 2018 (has links)
Perspectives about the Studies on the Inka Dominance in the Southern Oriental Edge of the KollasuyuThe Inka archaeological record of the Argentine mid-west affords the possibility to consider the space involved effectively controlled by the state organization. The existing documents yield data and offer case studies of the Inka domination over the regional ethnic. The documents also offer an insight of the new relations established with the later domination from the first times of the Spanish conquest, all of which allows to improve understanding of the ways and functions of the Inka control, of the reactions and adjustments, over continuity and change, by evidence recognized in the records. We are presenting part of the known regional Inka infrastructure and materials, their characteristics and functions contrasting them with those of the native population. Thus, based on the former and joining it with archive documents and chroniclers’ references we offer an ad hoc model from the periphery in the austral end and in the final expansion epoch. This model is followed by a, perhaps, similar one for the first times of Spanish influence.
