No other world: the poetry of Don Maclennan

Robinson, Brendon Kimbale January 2008 (has links)
This is a study of the poetry of Don Maclennan in four chapters. Chapter One explores the poetry's deep involvement with the immediate world, and with the being that encounters it. Chapter Two examines the corpus's mistrust of abstract thought, and its suggestions for alternative ways of intepreting (or at least approaching an interpretation of) our existential situation. Chapter Three deals with Maclennan's writing on the subject of death, while the final chapter looks at the response of the poetry to the fact of death: put simply, this is to learn to love the situation we are in, and to record our thoughts for future generations, thus reaching beyond death to share with others the necessarily unique experience of our one and only life.

El Quijote de Coseriu

Wiesse Rebagliati, Jorge Raúl 12 April 2018 (has links)
In his extensive linguistic work, Eugenio Coseriu (Mihaileni, 1921 - Tübingen, 2002), uses literature several times to exemplify theoretical linguistic concepts and even to model them. As is the case with several 20th century scholars (José Ortega y Gasset or Mijaíl Bajtín), Don Quixote is, for Coseriu, a touchstone to formulate reflections that do not apply exclusively to it, as other relevant works of 20th century’s Cervantism, such as Stephen Gilman’s or and Edward C. Riley’s, do. This article seeks to trace the references of Don Quixote and Cervantes in Coseriu’s work and, above all, to present and discuss the correction made by Coseriu to Leo Spitzer’s “Perspectivismo lingüístico en el Quijote”.

W. A. Mozart: Don Giovanni. Arrangements - gedruckt im deutschsprachigen Raum bis 1850

Klitzing, Andrea 29 January 2020 (has links)
The global and justified attention that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Don Giovanni received in music historiography has long concealed the fact, that the earliest form of its dissemination and appropriation took place on a small scale: the Arrangement. Up until 1850, arrangements of Don Giovanni were edited in the German-speaking countries in ever-increasing numbers and for various chamber music ensembles without words. Andrea Klitzing researched more than 300 Don Giovanni-arrangements and summarized them in a table with numerous links to digitized music prints and historical reviews. The book 'Don Giovanni unter Druck' (“Don Giovanni in press”) is devoted to the systematic recording, evaluation, and contextualization of those print editions. Estimated release, V&R Unipress, May 2020.

Porovnání vybraných českých překladů Cervantesova Dona Quijota / Comparison of selected Czech translations of Cervantes's Don Quixote

Kolomý, Vojtěch January 2019 (has links)
Thesis Comparison of selected Czech translations of Cervantes's Don Quixote Vojtěch Kolomý Abstract The aim of this thesis is to compare the last two translations of Cervantes's Don Quixote: the translation realised by Václav Černý in 1931 and the translation of Zdeněk Šmíd from 1952. Although the thesis focuses on the original versions of both translations, the later changed editions are taken into account too. The structure of the thesis is as follows: First, the thesis analyses Cervantes's original text with respect to the translation and after a short chapter about the first Czech translators of Don Quixote and their translations, it describes the translations of Černý and Šmíd and the circumstances of the genesis of both translations. Then, the core of this thesis is a detailed parallel comparison of certain passages from Don Quixote. In the final chapter, the findings are applied. Keywords: Don Quixote, Cervantes, translation criticism, Václav Černý, Zdeněk Šmíd

Mongrain, Julie 12 1900 (has links)
From the sixteenth century, the Cossacks became more and more submissive to the authority of the tsar, but remained in some regions of their own, especially the Don. Their military ability and their utilization as cavalry in defense and offensive activities defined their role within the Empire. ln return, they received many honorary and material benefits. Sorne occasional revolts did not weaken the link between the Cossacks and the tsar. But at the turn of the twentieth century, the situation in the country was fragile. The Cossacks were not spared by the difficulties of the population and they had the same demands. The troubles continued until the revolution of october 1917, followed by a civil war that particularly hit the south of the country and lasted until 1920. Taking into account the privileged relations the Cossacks had with the regime, and the myth that described them as great defenders of the tsar, we have to ask ourselves what their real political attitude was towards and during the revolutionary episode. That is the question this thesis tries to answer. ln doing so, we will study the western historiography, francophone and anglophone, since the time of the contemporary authors until the most recent trends. The interpretation of the events of October arose historiographical schools and diff erent visions : some reduced them to a coup d'Etat and others saw a real revolution. On the other hand, the historians agree on lots of questions in their global analysis of the political behaviour of Cossacks. Thus, according to our analysis, the Cossacks had a tendency to opt for neutrality and showed ambivalence towards the two belligerent of the Civil war. They gave their support and took a stand with the side that was more qualified to defend their interests at this or that moment and their aims were foremost separatist.

BREEDING FOR VALUE-ADDED TRAITS IN SOFT WINTER WHEAT

Knott, Carrie Ann 01 January 2007 (has links)
Increased interest in value-added traits of soft winter wheat (SWW; Triticum aestivum L.), such as white-seed coat and gluten strength, has resulted from economic incentives for these traits. The first objective of this study was to determine whether differences existed between red- and white- seeded progeny of 17 populations. When abiotic and biotic stresses were negligible, significant differences were not detected between red- and white-seeded progeny, except for yield: red-seeded progeny had a significantly higher yield than the white-seeded progeny. However, when abiotic and biotic stresses were larger, the yield of white-seeded progeny was not significantly different from red-seeded progeny and the white-seeded progeny accumulated a significantly greater amount of deoxynivalenol (DON) than red-seeded progeny. Therefore, Kentucky producers should be cautious when considering production of white-seeded cultivars. The second objective of this study was to determine whether early- or late- generation selection for white-seeded progeny produced a higher frequency of superior white-seeded lines. Three selection methods were studied. Late-generation bulk selection produced a significantly lower frequency of superior white-seeded lines (1.7%) than single seed descent (SSD; 13.9%); the early-generation bulk (9.6%) did not differ statistically from either method. Although SSD produced the most superior lines, the utility of SSD breeding will have to be assessed by SWW breeders to justify additional labor and space requirements. The final objective was to determine whether early-generation selection of wheat quality, as determined by wheat meal-based assays, was effective. A cross between a strong gluten soft red winter and a weak gluten soft white winter wheat was examined. Significant correlations and regressions between wheat meal assays and flour-based assays were found. High heritability and realized genetic gains were also observed. Therefore, early-generation selection for quality characteristics appears to be effective.
