Louise Dupin : a feminist thinker in the age of Montesquieu, Voltaire and Rousseau

Marty, Frédéric 15 December 2014 (has links)
In her day Louise Dupin (1706-1799) was a famous salon holder and a "feminist" author whose writings are still relatively unknown. It took a century and a half for her manuscripts – written by her secretary, a certain Jean-Jacques Rousseau – to leave the hands of her inheritors. Then, due to their geographical dispersion, they remained unpublished for a further sixty years. For the first time, readers can now consult a transcription of the historical and educational parts of her Ouvrage sur les femmes. We shall also explore the feminist part of her "Critique de l’Esprit des lois". The chatelaine of Chenonceau was in fact one of the first to risk a refutation of Montesquieu's work. Voltaire read it attentively. How did she articulate her feminist and political thought in her encounters with the great philosophers of her day? To what degree was her monarchism troubled by convictions whose keyword was equality? We would like to introduce readers to the balanced, erudite and pugnacious character of her historical, political and moral thinking.

The Ingenious Narrator of Poe's Dupin Mysteries

Wirkus, Timothy Paul 25 May 2011 (has links) (PDF)
Scholarship on Edgar Allan Poe's Dupin stories consistently focuses on the stories' influence on the genre of detective fiction. One of the foundational genre elements pioneered by Poe in these tales is the sidekick/narrator. Throughout detective fiction, the less-intelligent sidekick has become a standard fixture, a convenient trope in foregrounding the brilliant machinations of the detective's mind. The attention the literature gives to the narrator of the Dupin tales is almost universally in terms of the sidekick/narrator figure as a trope of detective fiction; in this way, it seems that Dupin's companion has come to be read in terms of what he has in common with his successors, the Watsons and Archie Goodwins of mystery stories, rather than more strictly on the terms of what makes him unique. This thesis examines the ways in which the narrator alternately highlights (in subtle ways) and attempts to obfuscate (in equally subtle ways) his role as the fictional author of the tales. The narrator's role as writer complicates the reading of Dupin as the autonomous master of his own narrative, and as the narrator himself as a generic, dim-witted sidekick. In this way, Dupin and the narrator occupy flip sides of the same narrative coin—Dupin serves as the showman, and the narrator, the invisible author. As contrasting, complementary doubles of one another, they perform the function of collaborative authors, each one equally essential to the production of the tales. Similarly, this reevaluation of the narrator/sidekick as an author figure brings out ways in which the narrator's genius parallels and matches the genius of Dupin.

Cecil, On the Lie curvature of Dupin hypersurfaces [4]. We study the basic concepts of Lie sphere geometry, which given the framework for the study of Dupin hypersurfaces in the Lie sphere geometry. We construct example of a non-compact proper Dupin hypersurface immersed in Sn on which the Lie curvature Ψ = 1/2 which is not Lie equivalent to an open subset of an isoparametric hypersurface in Sn. We also produce example on which Lie curvature Ψ has a constant value c, 0 < c < 1. / Neste trabalho estudamos alguns resultados do artigo de Tomas E. Cecil, On the Lie curvature of Dupin hypersurfaces [4].

Recollements de morceaux de cyclides de Dupin pour la modélisation et la reconstruction 3D : étude dans l'espace des sphères / Blending pieces of Dupin cyclides for 3D modeling and reconstruction : study in the space of spheres

Druoton, Lucie 04 April 2013 (has links)
The thesis deals with the blending of canal surfaces in geometric modeling using pieces of Dupin Cyclides. We try to solve a problem of reconstructing real parts manufactured and controlled by the CEA of Valduc. Using the space of spheres in which we can manipulate both points, spheres and canal surfaces, we simplify some problems. This space is represented by a 4-dimensional quadric in a 5-dimensional space, equipped with the Lorentz form, it is the Lorentz space. In the space of spheres, problems of blending canal surfaces by pieces of Dupin cyclides are simplified in linear problems. We give algorithms to make such blends using the space of spheres and after we come back to 3 dimensions to draw the result. These blends are always made along characteristics circles of the considered surfaces. By solving the problem of three contact conditions, we highlight another particular curve, on a one parameter familly of cyclides, that we call contact curve along which we could also make this kind of blends

Le consulat français de Barcelone : guerre et commerce en Méditerranée (1679-1716) / The french consulate of Barcelona : war and trade in the Mediterranean sea (1679-1716)

Sempéré, Julien 22 March 2014 (has links)
This thesis studies the birth of the French consulate of Barcelona as a royal institution (1679-1716). The long adaptation to the reforms of Colbert and Pontchartrain characterizes the life and the development of the institution as shown through the study of the correspondence, the birth of the chancellery or the vice-consulates and the obtaining of the consular position. The local study of the consulate is envisaged in the global consequences of its management, in particular with the prospect of the economic policy led by Seignelay, Louis and Jérôme de Pontchartrain in Spain and, beyond, via the illicit business, in Latin America. To this end, the figure of the trade consul and his attitude towards the royal instructions are studied through three successive consuls: Laurent Soleil (1679-1705), Jean-Philippe Monclus (1705-1709) and Simon Dupin (1709-1716). Laurent Soleil's consulate and its trade activity in Barcelona are detailed. The implication of the latter in original experiences with the Catalan theorists of the economy such as Marti Piles and Josep Aparici is demonstrated. The common interest of diverse actors, in a context of rivalries, for common economic projects is studied through the example of the trade with Tw1Îs. The question of the use of the consulate as the way to strengthen the trade business of his holder and as insurance in front of hazards of the war is put. More generally, the attitude and the adaptation of the trade actors in a province regularly affected by the wars are studied.

Poe's Entangled Fiction: Quantum Field Theory in "The Colloquy of Monos and Una" and "The Mystery of Marie Rogêt"

Little, Jean A. 01 June 2016 (has links)
When seen among the constellation of Edgar Allan Poe's works culminating in Eureka, "The Colloquy of Monos and Una" and "The Mystery of Marie Rogêt," take on an important role as vehicles for scientific contemplation. Similar to early quantum physicists, such as Einstein and Schrödinger, Poe uses macro-level analogies to explore the unity of individual entities, which becomes an important tenet of his explanation of the universe. His thought experiments also resemble those of modern physics in their approach to reality as probabilistic, an idea that finds its echo in quantum field theory, which distinguishes between observed particles and their underlying existence as vibrations in a field rather than distinct units. In this thesis, I use specific examples from "Monos and Una" to demonstrate that the barrier between individuals blurs when viewed from the perspective of a unified field. I also examine ways that "Marie Rogêt" expands the idea of a unified field in terms of entangled individuals and correlated events, and pushes against the Newtonian deterministic tradition. In the context of Poe's body of work, these stories depart from the aesthetic that characterizes many of his most widely-read stories, in that their exploration of the scientific seems to overtake the narrative. However, their composition, which leaves some readers dissatisfied, expertly comments on the dichotomy between the observed and the real, and the role that narrative plays in interpreting experience.
