: Approches expérimentale et numérique / Mesoscopic experimental and numerical study of dynamic recrystallization of inconel 718 during hot forging

De Jaeger, Julien 17 January 2013 (has links)
Developed in the 60’s, the nickel-base superalloy, Inconel 718, is widely used for hot parts of aircraft engines. The hot forging process confers to the alloy its final microstructure and its mechanical properties. The control of the process requires a deep knowledge of the interactions between the hardening phenomena and the dynamic recrystallization for the various thermomechanical conditions which are used. The present study mainly focuses on the experimental characterization of the phenomena linked to hot forging in the super-δ-solvus domain (1050 °C), as well for a single pass process as for a multipass one. Hot compression tests are used to simulate forging. After deformation, samples are helium quenched in order to freeze the microstructure that allows understanding its evolution as a function of the thermomechanical parameters (ε, and T). Microstructure analyses have then been performed using optical and scanning microscopy, EBSD, and neutron diffraction. A specific attention is paid on the study of the -phase evolution as it has a direct influence on the mechanical properties of the alloy. Its evolution is followed along thermal and thermomechanical treatments. The measure of the static and dynamic precipitation kinetics has led to a better understanding of the -phase role during hot forging at temperatures below solvus (980 °C). A sequential coupling is developed, based on two models; the first one is a crystal plasticity model implemented in a finite element code (CPFEM), the second one being a modeling of recrystallization using a cellular automata approach. The coupling allows the evolutions of the mechanical fields and the microstructure to be simulated during hot forging. The numerical results fit correctly most of the experimental data, mechanical and structural.

Microstructure prediction of severe plastic deformation manufacturing processes for metals

Shen, Ninggang 01 May 2018 (has links)
The objective of the research presented in this thesis has been to develop a physics-based dislocation density-based numerical framework to simulate microstructure evolution in severe plastic deformation (SPD) manufacturing processes for different materials. Different mechanisms of microstructure evolution in SPD manufacturing processes were investigated and summarized for different materials under dynamic or high strain rates over a wide temperature range. Thorough literature reviews were performed to clarify discrepancies of the mechanism responsible for the formation of nanocrystalline structure in the machined surface layer under both low-temperature and high-temperature conditions. Under this framework, metallo-thermo-mechanically (MTM) coupled finite element (FE) models were developed to predict the microstructure evolution during different SPD manufacturing processes. Different material flow stress responses were modeled subject to responsible plastic deformation mechanisms. These MTM coupled FE models successfully captured the microstructure evolution process for various materials subjected to multiple mechanisms. Cellular automaton models were developed for SPD manufacturing processes under intermediate to high strain rates for the first time to simulate the microstructure evolution subjected to discontinuous dynamic recrystallization and thermally driven grain growth. The cellular automaton simulations revealed that the recrystallization process usually cannot be completed by the end of the plastic deformation under intermediate to high strain rates. The completion of the recrystallization process during the cooling stage after the plastic deformation process was modeled for the first time for SPD manufacturing processes at elevated temperatures.

Dependence of Microstructure Evolution, Texture, and Mechanical Behavior of A Mg Alloy on Thermo-Mechanical Input during Friction Stir Processing

Yu, Zhenzhen 01 December 2010 (has links)
In this thesis, the relationship among friction stir processing (FSP) parameters, microstructure evolution, texture development, and mechanical hehavior of AZ31B Mg alloy was investigated. First of all, in order to reveal the correlation among the deformation conditions, dynamic recrystallization (DRX) mechanisms, and microstructure evolution in the Mg alloy, hot compression tests at a wide range of Zener-Hollomon parameter (Z) values were conducted. Through optical microscopic examination, it was found out that above a critical Z value, twinning influences the DRX process resulting in a more effective grain refinement, which is manifested in a significant change in the slope of the Z-drec relationship, where drec is the recrystallized grain size. Moreover, EBSD examination revealed that the twinning also contributed to a distinct change in the recrystallization texture. Compression tests were performed along both through-thickness and in-rolling-plane directions of the plate to study the orientation dependency of twinning activities and its influence on the DRX process. X-ray line profile analysis (XLPA) provides further insights by highlighting the differences in the dislocation density/types, subgrain sizes, and twin densities during the DRX processes operating with or without the twinning. Secondly, the constitutive behaviour study was applied to the investigation of microstructure evolution during FSP. By varying the key FSP parameters systematically, i.e. rotation and travel rates of the tool, a series of FSP specimens were prepared with a wide range of thermo-mechanical inputs in terms of Z. The resulting tensile behavior in the stir zone (SZ) showed a dramatic change as a function of Z, caused by a systematic change in the texture within SZ measured by neutron diffraction. A three-dimensional transient model was developed to investigate the detailed deformation history including the temperature and strain rate profiles and material flow pattern during FSP of the Mg alloy. Such deformation history can be combined with the constitutive study from the compression tests in order to analyze the developments of micro-texture and DRX grains during FSP, which will, in turn, dominate the mechanical properties. Based on the studies above, new fundamental understandings were gained on the governing mechanisms for the deformation and recrystallization processes during FSP and the influence of thermo-mechanical input during FSP on ductility enhancement in the Mg alloy.

Estudo microestrutural em mineralização aurífera do tipo-veio hospedada em zona de cisalhamento : caso do depósito Sertãozinho, província Borborema, NE do Brasil /

Almeida, Harrizon Lima de. January 2003 (has links)
Abstract: The Itapetim shear zone(ISZ) developed both foliation and lineation in the different rock types, from mylonites to ultramylonites. Most of the microstructure types observed in the ISZ preserve evidence of high temperature metamorphic conditions. The quartz [c]-axis, of deformed polycrystalline aggregates, show two distinct symmetries, type I crossed girdles and single girdles. The geometrical analysis of texture, suggest non-coaxial shear for deformation in ISZ. A gold mineralized quartz vein hosted in ultramylonitic rocks, constitutes the hydrothermal precipitation zone. The vein is banded by tourmiline segments, which include massive quartz grains aggregates between the bands. The quartz grains show polygonal contacts and minor intumescent limits. These latter suggest grain boundary migration recrystallization and the polygonal grains seem to be best explained by the annealing after stopping the shear deformation. The quartz [c]-axis obtained in the auriferous vein shows the same single girdle pattern observed in the ultramylonites of the ISZ. This pattern is interpreted as a preserved texture formed during the shear deformation. The banded structure is interpreted as the result of variations of the fluid pressure and the formation of microfractures, associated the crack-seal events. Crack-seal mechanisms can have been active previous or during the deformation of the IZS. The microstructurals features supports evidences for the last possibility. / Doutor

Multiscale abrasion analysis of austenitic manganese steels applied to ore crushers.

Paulo Cordeiro Machado 02 October 2017 (has links)
The abrasive wear of two manganese austenitic steels, materials broadly used in mining industry, was studied using multiscale methodology (scales: macro, meso and micro). In the macroscale the mechanisms of damage and wear of in-service crusher liner were studied. In the mesoscale, jaw crusher and linear scratch tests were performed. In the microscale the linear scratch test was used to evaluate the effects of the hardening layer and the crystallographic orientation of the austenitic grains of steels with 12 %Mn and 20 %Mn. The characterization techniques used in this research were: macro and microhardness, instrumented nanohardness, OM, MEV, DRX, EBSD, FIB and TEM. The research was divided into three chapters, entitled: \"Abrasive wear of steels with 12 %Mn and 20 %Mn via jaw crusher test\"; \"The effect of the in-service workhardening and crystallographic orientation on the micro-scratch wear of austenitic steels with 12 %Mn and 20 %Mn\"; and \"Subsurface microstructure of the deformed austenitic steel with 12 %Mn by abrasive wear\". The first chapter showed, from the jaw crusher tests (i.e. mesoscale), that the steel with 20 %Mn tends to be more wear resistant than the steel with 12 %Mn. This result was obtained to the fixed jaw crusher, in which the wear severity was superior to the movable jaw, since it presents microcutting and microploughing as predominant micromechanisms, whereas in the mobile jaw the predominant micromechanism was microendentation. In the second chapter, it was observed that scratch wear (i.e. meso and microscale) does not depend on the in-service work-hardening profile. However, it was identified the effect of crystallographic orientation, (001), (111) and (101) planes, on the scratch wear of the steels with 12% Mn and 20% Mn. In the last chapter, the multiscale analysis showed that the subsurface deformed microstructure changes with different intensities. At the three analysis scales, a layer with ultrafine grains was observed in the subsurface and mechanical twins. The formation of this layer, with nanometric grains, was associated with dynamic recrystallization by plastic deformation, in which it is part of the self healing effect. In addition to the results found, the development of this doctoral research allowed for the elaboration of two methodologies: i. Analysis of the effect of crystallographic orientation on the scratch wear; and ii. Microstructure analysis revealed by ion etching - FIB.

Microstructure/property relationships in three high strength wrought magnesium alloys based on elektron 675

Twier, Abdulhamied Moktar January 2011 (has links)
The object of the present investigation has been to relate the mechanical properties of a high strength Mg-Y-Gd alloy to alloy composition, extrusion parameters and microstructure. Three alloys with various Y: Gd ratios, of similar total solute content (at %) to Elektron 675, have been investigated in this study:9122: Mg – 6.5 wt % Y – 7.6 wt % Gd – 0.4 wt % Zr 9123: Mg – 8.2 wt % Y – 4.8 wt % Gd – 0.4 wt % Zr9124: Mg – 2.6 wt % Y – 13.1 wt % Gd – 0.4 wt % ZrThe three alloys were extruded at 425 and 475 °C with extrusion ratio 17: 1 to give two samples from each alloy, group a and b. Alloy 9122 was also extruded at 460 and 500 °C with extrusion ratio 10: 1 to give another two samples c and d. The as-cast microstructure of the three alloys comprised equiaxed α-magnesium grains and regions of eutectic decorating some grain boundaries formed during solidification of the ingot. Variation of extrusion parameters has resulted in a dispersion of different volume fractions of second phase particles in different groups of samples. The chemistry of second phase particles was determined by in-situ bulk energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD); magnesium yttrium was identified for near-equiaxed particles and yttrium hydride was proposed as a possible identification for cuboids. The composition of these compounds varied with variation of Y: Gd in the three alloys. Variation of extrusion ratio and extrusion temperature had a clear effect on the evolution of the extruded microstructure and the development of crystallographic texture as characterized by optical microscopy, electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) and inverse pole figures. The microstructure of the extruded samples was refined during extrusion through dynamic recrystallization (DRX). Samples of groups a, b and c exhibited a microstructure in which bands of fine, equiaxed grains in association with stringers of second phase particles (running along the extrusion direction) were formed between bands of coarse, equiaxed grains. Sample d contained only small volume fraction of second phase particles; only a few alternating bands were formed and considerable grain growth occurred. A random texture was developed during extrusion in samples of groups a, b and c; a wide spread of orientations accompanied by a (new) previously unreported texture component in which basal poles of some grains are aligned nearly parallel to the extrusion direction was developed. The new texture component was weak in sample c and entirely suppressed in sample d. The asymmetry in tensile and compressive yield stress commonly associated with magnesium extrusions was nearly eliminated in samples of group a and b. The new basal texture component was likely to be a result of nucleation of DRX on sites rotating into this orientation. This is proposed to be a result of deformation in those regions in grains was accomodated by basal, prismatic and pyramidal slip. The grains nucleated in this orientation appear to have developed a form of preferred growth which led to strengthening of this new component following solution treatment. The effect of varying solute content (Y & Gd) and different ageing temperatures 150, 200, 250 and 300 °C (T5 & T6) on the ageing response and precipitation reaction were investigated using hardness measurements and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Alloy 9122 showed the highest ageing response of the three alloys at 150, 200 and 250 °C (T5 & T6); specimens aged in the T5 gave higher hardness than the T6 treatment, a contribution of fine grain size. The three alloys did not respond to ageing at 300 °C. The precipitation reactions that occurred in alloy 9122 (at under, peak and overageing) and alloys 9123 and 9124 (at peak ageing) at 250 °C have been characterized. The precipitation sequence observed in sample 9122a can be described as: . The microstructure of peak aged specimens of alloys 9122 and 9124 were similar; both contained a homogeneous dispersion of precipitates and some metastable precipitates. Alloy 9123 contained only a homogeneous dispersion of precipitates and remnants of precipitates and no precipitates. The enhanced thermal stability of and phases are most likely responsible for the superior elevated temperature properties of Elektron 675. The effect of varying solute content (Y & Gd) and extrusion parameters on the mechanical properties were determined using tensile testing. Alloys 9122 and 9124 exhibited higher 0.2 % proof stress and UTS than alloy 9123 and alloy 9122 was the hardest alloy. Alloy 9122 exhibited the worst ductiliy (T5 and T6) among 9123 and 9124, and this was attributed to the higher volume fraction of second phase particles. The ductility of samples a, b and c in the as-extruded & T5 conditions, particularly in the transverse direction, was limited by stringers of second phase particles, whereas ductility and failure in sample d was governed by grain size and texture. The ductility and failure of all samples aged in the T6 treatment, irrespective of the extrusion history, was controlled by texture and grain size rather than stringers of second phase particles.

Thermal Structure of Mid-Crustal Shear Zones

Mazza, Sarah Elizabeth 28 June 2013 (has links)
Analysis of quartz c-axis fabrics and microstructures from ductily deformed rocks allows for the examination of the kinematics associated with crustal deformation. This thesis expands on the current knowledge of the kinematic evolution of the Himalayas and Scottish Caledonides, by examining samples from the Main Central Thrust (MCT) (Himalayas) and the Sgurr Beag Thrust (SBT) (Scottish Caledonides).  Metamorphic temperatures (Tm) associated above the MCT are inverted; chapter one attempts to test if deformation temperatures (Td) correlate to Tm, indicating that ductile shearing occurred during peak Tm. In the Scottish Caledonides, Td and Tm increase from foreland to hinterland, potentially indicating a right way up thermal structure;  chapter two presents Td and Tm associated with the region around the SBT. Above the MCT, quartz c-axis fabrics yield Td ranging between 500-650 "C, corresponding to the temperatures of dynamic recrystallization for subgrain rotation (SGR) and grain boundary migration (GBM). Up to 1000m above the MCT, Td and Tm are within error of each other, suggesting that shearing occurred during peak Tm; while further away from the MCT  Tm is significantly hotter than Td, suggesting that shearing continued past Tm. Deformation associated with the upper part of the Moine thrust sheet and the SBT yields quartz c-axis fabrics with Td ranging between 395-583 "C, corresponding to the regional dynamic recrystallization. Tm calculations original to this study yield pressure-temperature constraints of 4.8-5.8 kbar and 586-625 "C. Tm is within error of Td, suggesting that deformation and metamorphism were synchronous. / Master of Science

Effect of hot working characteristics on the texture development in AISI 430 and 433 ferritic stainless steel

Annan, Kofi Ahomkah 10 June 2013 (has links)
The last seven hot rolling passes of the ferritic stainless steels (FSS) AISI 430 and AISI 433 (the latter an Al-added variant of 430) were simulated on Gleeble-1500D® and Gleeble-3800TM® thermo-mechanical simulators to investigate the effect of temperature, strain rate and inter-pass time on the development of texture in these steel grades and its subsequent influence on ridging. The compression tests were carried out over a wide range of strain rates (0.1 s-1 to 5 s-1, 25 s-1 and 50 s-1) and temperatures (1100 to 820 oC) with different inter-pass times (2 s, 10 s, 20 s and 30 s). The transition temperature from dynamic recrystallization (which may introduce a texture change) to dynamic recovery (in which no texture changes are expected) was determined by examining the relationship between the mean flow stress and the deformation temperature in multi-pass tests. Both macrotexture (XRD) and microtexture (EBSD) analyses were employed to characterise and study the texture present in these steels. It was found that the texture in the central layer of the compressed sample is a strong recrystallization-type. The through-thickness textural and microstructural banding was found to be responsible for ridging in these grades of stainless steels. Dynamic recrystallization which promotes the formation of the desired ã-fibre texture leading to high ductility, formability and eventually reduction or elimination of ridging, was found to occur in both AISI 430 and AISI 433 at high temperatures, low strain rates and longer inter-pass times with multi-pass testing. Generally AISI 433 has a stronger gamma texture developed than the AISI 430 when hot rolled under similar conditions, which leads to improved ductility and less ridging in AISI 433 than AISI 430. / Dissertation (MSc)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering / unrestricted
