Modélisation hybride et multi-échelle pour la simulation des écoulements et des transferts thermiques dans les micro-canaux / Hybrid and multi-scale modeling for the simulation of fluid flows and heat transfer in microchannels

Vu, Van Huyen 13 December 2016 (has links)
The main objective of this thesis is to model the multi-scale heat and fluid flows in micro-/nano channels. This method must be able of capturing at the same time the fluid/solid interaction at the small scale but also the flows induced by the inlet/outlet boundary conditions at the large scale. To this aim, we have adopted an approach coupling the continuum model in the bulks of the channel and the discrete model at the vicinity of the wall, based on an atomistic representation of the fluid and the solid. The Navier-Stokes and energy equations, coupled with an equation of state, are approximated by a finite volume method and the molecular dynamics simulations are used to finely represent the interaction between the fluid and the solid. This hybrid method requires information transmission between the former two regions: averaged quantity in molecular dynamics simulations are imposed as boundary conditions for the continuous model and constrained dynamics, coupled with a thermostat Langevin, is used to control in the molecular level. A set of small molecular dynamics blocks, smartly distributed all along the wall/fluid interface, allows to treat flow and heat transfers in a long micro/nano-channel with a reasonable computational cost. After a validation step, the hybrid multi-scale simulations of complex fluid flows in the channel composed of the platinum wall have been conducted for argon in incompressible liquid or compressible gaseous phase with and without phase change in the vicinity of the wall

The stiffening of soft soils on railway lines

Dong, K., Connolly, D.P., Laghrouche, O., Woodward, P.K., Alves Costa, P. 21 December 2020 (has links)
Railway tracks experience elevated rail deflections when the supporting soil is soft and/or the train speed is greater than approximately 50% of the wave propagation velocity in the track-soil system (i.e. the critical velocity). Such vibrations are undesirable, so soil replacement or soil improvement of the natural soil (or alternatively mini-piles or lime-cement treatment) is often used to increase track-ground stiffness prior to line construction. Although areas of existing soft subgrade might be easily identified on a potential new rail route, it is challenging to determine the type and depth of ground remediation required. Therefore, major cost savings can be made by optimising ground replacement/improvement strategies. This paper presents a numerical railway model, designed for the dynamic analysis of track-ground vibrations induced by high speed rail lines. The model simulates the ground using a thin-layer finite element formulation capable of calculating 3D stresses and strains within the soil during train vehicle passage. The railroad track is modelled using a multi-layered formulation which permits wave propagation in the longitudinal direction, and is coupled with the soil model in the frequency-wavenumber domain. The model is validated using a combination of experimental railway field data, published numerical data and a commercial finite element package. It is shown to predict track and ground behaviour accurately for a range of train speeds. The railway simulation model is computationally efficient and able to quickly assess dynamic, multi-layered soil response in the presence of ballast and slab track structures. Therefore it is well-suited to analysing the effect of different soil replacement strategies on dynamic track behaviour, which is particularly important when close to critical speed. To show this, three soil-embankment examples are used to compare the effect of different combinations of stiffness improvement (stiffness magnitude and remediation depths up to 5 m) on track behaviour. It is found that improvement strategies must be carefully chosen depending upon the track type and existing subgrade layering configuration. Under certain circumstances, soil improvement can have a negligible effect, or possibly even result in elevated track vibration, which may increase long-term settlement. However, large benefits are possible, and if detailed analysis is performed, it is possible to minimise soil improvement depth with respect to construction cost.

A Novel Micro Fluid Kinetic Energy Harvester Based on the Vortex-Induced Vibration Principle and the Piezo Effect

Wen, Quan 13 October 2015 (has links)
In this thesis, a miniaturized energy harvester system is developed. The energy harvester converts fluid kinetic energy into electrical energy without using any rotating components. The working principle of the energy harvester is based on the so called vortex-induced vibration. Such systems have the potential to provide energy for wireless sensor networks in the field of inline measurements for gas, oil or water transportation systems. The theoretical background of the vortex-induced vibration (VIV) is studied. Based on the studies, a fluid-structure interaction simulation is carried out to optimize the structure of the energy harvester. As result, the conversion efficiency is significantly improved, which is experimentally confirmed. A series of demonstrators are manufactured according to the simulation and optimization results. It is tested on a self-constructed test bench. To further improve the performance, an electromagnetic generator is proposed, and therefore, a multimethod demonstrator realized. The demonstrators are working in air flow already at a velocity of 2 m/s, and reach the maximum efficiency at 3.6 m/s. This performance ranks among the best published results and is discussed in detail.

Cevallos Alarcón, Fabricio Alfredo 22 May 2023 (has links)
[EN] The resolution of nonlinear equations and systems is a subject of great theoretical and practical interest, since many mathematical models in science or industry are expressed through nonlinear systems or differential or integral equations that, by means of discretization techniques, give rise to such systems. Since it is generally difficult, if not impossible, to solve nonlinear equations analytically, the most widely used tool is iterative methods, which try to obtain increasingly precise approximations of the solutions based on certain initial estimates. There is a varied literature on iterative methods for solving equations and systems, which covers concepts of order of approximation, efficiency, optimality, stability, among other important topics. In this study we obtain new iterative methods that improve some known ones in terms of order or efficiency, that is, they obtain better approximations with lower computational cost. The convergence of iterative methods is usually studied locally. This means that convergence results are obtained by imposing conditions on the equation in a neighbourhood of the solution. Obviously, these results are not applicable if we do not know it. Another point of view, which we address in this work, is the semilocal study that, by imposing conditions in a neighbourhood of the initial estimation, provides an environment of this point that contains the solution and guarantees the convergence of the iterative method to it. Finally, from a global point of view, we study the behaviour of iterative methods as a function of the initial estimation, by studying the dynamics of the rational functions associated with these methods. This report collects the results of several articles of our authorship, in which different aspects of the matter are dealt with, such as the peculiarities of convergence in the case of multiple roots, the possibility of increasing the order of an optimal method from order four to order eight, maintaining optimality in the case of multiple roots, the study of semilocal convergence in a high-order method, as well as the dynamic behaviour of some iterative methods. / Cevallos Alarcón, FA.
