Journalism has a peculiar narrative by a process of technical and procedural routines in production environments. These routines were gradually leveling and pasteurizing narratives about to suffocate own making a report. In many instances, the journalists managed to subvert these same techniques and routines, strengthening distinguished journalistic style, where history and character are more important than the actual format of the traditional texts from newspapers and magazines. This research sought to map and uncover the paths of journalist John Anthony, who throughout his career has subverted the rules and routines from a journalistic from the edges, the margins and the margins of social theories of choice journalistic news. In this journalism, this research calls journalism edges. This trajectory was grounded in theories of semiotics, the study of journalism and the creative process, from the genetic criticism. The application of this journalism edges can redeem journalism more literary, aimed to the characters and their stories.

Vérification automatique des montages d'usinage par vision : application à la sécurisation de l'usinage / Vision-based automatic verification of machining setup : application to machine tools safety

Karabagli, Bilal 06 November 2013 (has links)
In High Speed Machining it is of key importance to avoid any collision between the machining tool and the machining setup. If the machining setup has not been assembled correctly by the operator and is not conform to the 3D CAD model sent to the machining unit, such collisions can occur. We have developed a vision system, that utilizes a single camera, to automatically check the conformity of the actual machining setup within the desired 3D CAD model, before launching the machining operation. First, we propose a configuration of the camera within the machining setup to ensure a best acquisition of the scene. In the aim to segmente the image in regions of interest, e.g. regions of the clamping elements and piece, based-on 3D CAD model, we realise a matching between graphes, theorical and real graphe computed from theorical image of 3D-CAD model and real image given by real camera. The graphs are constructed from a simple feature, such as circles and lines, that are manely present in the machining setup. In the aim to define the regions of interest (ROI) in real image within ROI given by 3D CAD model, we project a 3D CAD model in the real image, e.g. augmented reality. To automatically check the accordance between every region defined, we propose to compute three parametres, such as skeleton to represente the form, edges to represent a geometry and Area to represent dimension. We compute a score of accordance between three parameters that will be analyzed in fuzzy system to get a decision of conformity of the clamping element within it definition given in the CAD model. Some cases of machining setup configurations require 3D information to test the trajectory of the machine tool. To get out this situation, we have proposed a new depth from defocus based-method to compute a depth map of the scene. Finally, we present the result of our solution and we show the feasibility and robustness of the proposed solution in differents case of machining setup.

People on the Edges of Dreams

French, Francesca B. 17 November 1995 (has links)
This thesis is composed of a collection of twelve short stories, varying in length from 2 to 14 pages. Each story contains its own discrete theme, but fits as well within the overarching theme of the collection as a whole. This overarching theme is what gives the collection its cohesiveness. The main theme of the larger work can be found in the title of the collection, People on the Edges of Dreams. In many of the stories dreams, or dream-states, figure in the lives of the protagonists. In addition to the dream-state theme there is a less obvious theme, which has to do with the extent to which most or all of the main characters in the stories are faced with a kind of inescapable compassion for others. For example, the selfinvolved, self-gratifying protagonist in Matador cannot help but feel compassion first for Pearl, the woman he insults, and second for the "bums" on whom his livelihood depends. The theme of inescapable compassion can, I believe, be found to varying degrees in each of the stories in this collection.

Méthodologie de dimensionnement d’un assemblage collé pour application aérospatiale / Design methodology applied to bonded structure for space application

Le Pavic, Jérémy 26 April 2018 (has links)
Space Launchers are complex structures composed of a large number of elements. The assembling of these components must show a high level of reliability. The use of adhesive bonding technology is an interesting solution since it presentsseveral assets compared to “classical” joint techniques (such as riveting, bolting and welding), mainly because it can help to construct lighter and less energy consuming systems However„ the implementation of adhesives also has somedrawbacks. Due to the strong variations of geometrical and material properties, stress concentrations appear at the extremities of the joint. This phenomenon; called edge effects; has a great influence on the failure of the bond. As a result, the simple use of a classical stress or energetic criteria is not appropriate to predict the fracture of such structures. Therefore, it is obvious that the design of bonded assemblies requires reliable tools to take the edge effects into account. In this work an incremental failure model, which combines the stress and energetic criteria, is used. In order to decrease the computational cost, a semi-analytical application of this model is proposed. This is intended to make the approach more interesting to be implemented in an industrial environment. The accuracy of the prediction of the failure load is enhanced by means of the Finite Element method. The reliability of both the semi-analytical and Finite Element approaches is verified by comparing the model predictions with experimental data issued from double-notched Arcan and tubular specimen geometries. The aim of the pre-design phase is to identify the critical area in the whole range of the application of the studied geometry. Therefore, the realization of a parametric study is required in order to build a response surface. In the present study, this has been achieved by means of spatial interpolation using the Kriging model.

Community Detection in Imperfect Networks

Dahlin, Johan January 2011 (has links)
Community detection in networks is an important area of current research with many applications. Finding community structures is a challenging task and despite significant effort no satisfactory method has been found. Different methods find different communities in the same network and with different computational requirements. To counter this problem, several different methods are often used and the results compared manually. In this thesis, we present three different methods to instead merge the results from different methods (or several runs from the same algorithm) to find better estimates of the community structure. Another problem in practical applications is noisy and imperfect networks with missing and false edges. These imperfections are natural results from the methods used to map the network structure and are often difficult to eliminate. In this thesis, we apply a Monte Carlo-sampling method in combination with the introduced methods for merging community detection results to find community structures in such networks. The method is tested by simulation studies on both real-world networks and synthetic networks with generated uncertainties and imperfections. We finally demonstrate how it is possible to generate confidence levels of the obtained community structure from the merging methods. This allows for a qualitative comparison of the robustness and significance of the network clustering.

Fruit-feeding butterfly assemblages at Dlinza and Entumeni Nature Reserves, KwaZulu-Natal : a quantitative biodiversity study / cWayne S. Forrester.

Forrester, Wayne Steven January 2011 (has links)
Fruit-feeding butterfly assemblages at two indigenous forests in KwaZulu-Natal, the Dlinza and Entumeni forests were studied with baited traps during a year cycle June 2008-May 2009 and an additional March-May 2010 (autumn) survey. A total of 2801 butterflies were trapped, which consisted of 28 species, representing five subfamilies of the Nymphalidae, with the most abundant and species rich subfamily being Charaxinae. Higher than expected abundances and numbers of species trapped during the present study, though significantly lower than some tropical areas in Africa, demonstrate that this technique of quantifying assemblages with baited-traps are effective in forests of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa and should be included in future butterfly assessments. During a mark-release-recapture survey, very few fruit-feeding butterflies were recaptured, with no observed dispersal events between the two forests. A high turnover of fruit-feeding butterfly populations reflects adequacy of habitat quality and size at both the forests for the conservation of this guild of butterfly fauna. Season had a marked effect on butterfly assemblages with optimal times of the year emerging as autumn and winter, when butterfly abundance and species richness were highest. Abundance and diversity (Shannon index) at the smaller Dlinza forest were marginally higher or at least very similar to that of the larger Entumeni forest. Higher species richness (d) was recorded at the larger Entumeni forest. A greater number of individuals and higher number of species were trapped at both forest edges in comparison to forest interior (clearings). Species richness (d) and diversity (Shannon index) at Dlinza forest were higher at the interior (forest clearings) compared to that of the Dlinza forest edge. In contrast higher species richness and diversity (Shannon index) were recorded at the Entumeni edge if compared to the Entumeni interior. Highest species richness (d) was consistently recorded at the Entumeni forest edge. Similarity between the species compositions of both forests was high. The Entumeni forest are imbedded in a larger zone of natural grassland in contrast to the Dlinza forest which is partly located in an urban setting with small or absent grassland buffer zones. Altitudinal differences between these forests had lesser influence on the fruit-feeding butterfly assemblages whilst the closer urban edge at the Dlinza forest appears to contribute to a negative impact on the species richness at the forest margin. Recommendations to the conservation management of the Dlinza and Entumeni forests, stemming from this study, include conserving small forest remnants as part of stepping stone corridors between the forests, eradication of alien invasive plant species, conserving grassland buffer zones in which the forests are embedded and caution to any future developments in this unique area. Awareness to preserve and understand the wealth of indigenous smaller fauna, which are dependent on these magnificent forests, is to be promoted. / Thesis (Master of Environmental Sciences)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2012.

Matching Feature Points in 3D World

Avdiu, Blerta January 2012 (has links)
This thesis work deals with the most actual topic in Computer Vision field which is scene understanding and this using matching of 3D feature point images. The objective is to make use of Saab’s latest breakthrough in extraction of 3D feature points, to identify the best alignment of at least two 3D feature point images. The thesis gives a theoretical overview of the latest algorithms used for feature detection, description and matching. The work continues with a brief description of the simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) technique, ending with a case study on evaluation of the newly developed software solution for SLAM, called slam6d. Slam6d is a tool that registers point clouds into a common coordinate system. It does an automatic high-accurate registration of the laser scans. In the case study the use of slam6d is extended in registering 3D feature point images extracted from a stereo camera and the results of registration are analyzed. In the case study we start with registration of one single 3D feature point image captured from stationary image sensor continuing with registration of multiple images following a trail. Finally the conclusion from the case study results is that slam6d can register non-laser scan extracted feature point images with high-accuracy in case of single image but it introduces some overlapping results in the case of multiple images following a trail.
