Alves, Rosangela Augusta da Silva Vasconcelos 11 December 2009 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2019-03-29T23:26:32Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2009-12-11 / Introduction: Public healthcare faces the accelerated aging of the world´s population, a fact that led to the development of adequate and creative initiatives to respond to such reality. In Brazil we can see advancements in the elaboration and execution of public policies and healthcare programs for senior citizens. Objectives: 1. Assess the self-perception of the caregivers regarding their profession in the framework of long-term care institutions. 2. Analyze the caregivers´ self-perception regarding their professional role, after the utilization of thematic social dramas. Methodology: This is a qualitative study carried out at a long-term care institution in Fortaleza-CE. Six caregivers of both sexes took part in this study, all with a literacy level of up to secondary education, who performed their jobs in an alternated fashion according to the institution´s work schedule. Data collection was done, during the first stage, through a social and demographic identification questionnaire and a semi-structured interview composed of six questions about their perception regarding their professional role, based on the Roles Theory; during the second stage, six thematic sociodramas were performed, including warm-up, dramatization and sharing activities, which were based on the sociatry theory. Data were assessed based on Bardin´s content analysis (2008). Results: In stage 1, all caregivers had an initial difficulty in interacting. This was overcome using games, focusing on the building of trust to strengthen the interpersonal bonds. The feelings related to the senior citizens and to their work let us perceive approaches of care with love, as if the patient were a relative, while taking care of themselves was a secondary issue. The strengthening of both the individual and group potential favored the integration of the first and second stages thanks to the sociodrama´s ability to have an effect on role dynamics. Personal learning was the result of the give and receive nature of the caregiving work. In stage 2, the awakening of the creative potential catalyzed the group´s affection, the ethics of the professional role and the will to solve conflicts through unity, strength and courage. The caregivers told that they felt an increased self-esteem, self-care awareness and group strengthening after the performance of the sociodramas. The role awareness could be perceived due to the appearance of new needs within the group, such as personal valorization, better work conditions and institutional recognition. Conclusion: the self-perception of the professional role was expanded, considering that the sociodramas were able to widen the self-care awareness, offered tools to stimulate the knowledge of their own, creativity, group integration and joint responsibility in the multiplying power of this experience. The sociodrama was an integrative, viable practice for the caring of the caregiver and for the humanized professional qualification in Healthcare Promotion of senior citizens´ caregivers.

Nunes, Thaís Teles Veras 01 December 2011 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2019-03-29T23:38:07Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2011-12-01 / The aging population brings about many chronic degenerative diseases such as type 2 diabetes, which leads the elderly to disabilities it is a challenge specially for the public health system. The type 2 diabetes significantly affects individuals, causing a need to modify lifestyle and adhere to stringent therapeutic guidelines therefore influencing the elderly s quality of life. Based on these assumptions, we opted for this study aimed at investigating adherence to non-pharmacological treatment in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The research results encouraged us to produce two articles: the first "A therapeutic proposal to unite the non-pharmacological treatment for elderly patients with type 2 diabetes," This article, with a quantitative approach, describes the factors that can influence the adhesion of elderly diabetic patient to a non-medication treatment. The elderly participated in a treatment plan of physical activity and health education. Adherence to non-pharmacological treatment was considered when the patient participated in the triad program of body activity, dietary control and participation in the health education program. We found in this study that low income, the longer pathology (years) and better quality of life are factors that influence adhere to non-pharmacological treatment in the elderly diabetic. The second, entitled "Medical conditions and quality of life in a group of elderly patients with type 2 mellitus diabetes," aimed to evaluate the clinical conditions and quality of life in a group of elderly patients with type 2 mellitus diabetes. It was an epidemiological, cross-sectional, descriptive, quantitative study of elderly in type 2 diabetic care as outpatients at the Center for Integrated Medical Care. Questionnaires were given out regarding demographic, socioeconomic, clinical and therapeutic information along with a questionnaire on quality of life. We conclude that elderly diabetic patients are mostly female, overweight, low income, low educational history and low level of quality of life. In general, non-adherence of individuals to programs offered by public services can be related to the lack of knowledge of elderly diabetic patients regarding the health-disease process and the importance of prevention and health promotion for the benefits of a better quality of life.

Bandeira, Carina Barbosa 19 December 2012 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2019-03-29T23:43:53Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2012-12-19 / Introduction: In the aging population, depression is among the most frequent chronic diseases. Affect the functionality of the elderly and is considered a serious public health problem. It is a fact that depressive symptoms show up in greater numbers in the institutionalized elderly than in the community due to changes related to family disengagement and adaptation to new customs. Objective: To identify the prevalence of depression in elderly residents in large government and non-government long-stay institutions for the elderly (LTCF) in the city of Fortaleza. Methodology: Quantitative research, cross, drawn through a semi-structured questionnaire. Discusses data sociodemographic, clinical and diagnostic criteria of DSM-IV - TR. The research consisted of all elderly residents in two large nursing homes in Fortaleza. Data were statistically analyzed using SPSS version 20.0 Software. Results: In both institutions prevailed: women, unmarried, illiterate, aged between 70 and 79 years. Of the 237 patients evaluated, 82 (34.6%) had major depression. In the diagnosis of major depression by LTCF, statistical significance was detected when applying the inference test, chi-square, among elderly patients with this pathology in both LTCF (25.6% versus 39% in LTCF governmental and non-governmental respectively) (p = 0.042). Statistical significance was observed between the subject and type of nursing home institutionalization, 24 elderly (29.3%) were institutionalized willingly in LTCF nongovernmental, while 9 (11%) reached the governmental ILPI abandoned by their families (p = 0.001). On family visits, 40 (48.8%) received them in LTCF nongovernmental, while only 9 (6.1%) of depressed elderly had contact with their relatives in government LTCF (p = 0.002). Conclusion: It is considered high the prevalence rate of major depression found in the elderly research, resembling what other studies have found about depressive symptoms in institutionalized elderly. The elderly in the nongovernmental LTCF have become more vulnerable to depression, which is necessary to carry out more in-depth study. The DSM-IV-TR was effective as screening tools for depressive symptoms, however it is important to compare it with the geriatric depression scale of Yesavage, being easy to use and widely used in our environment.

A vivência estigmatizada do envelhecimento na contemporaneidade : do indesejável ao inevitável / The experience of aging in contemporary stigmatized: of the inevitable undesired (Inglês)

Nogueira, Fernanda Nícia Nunes 09 December 2005 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2019-04-05T23:06:34Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2005-12-09 / The present study aims at understanding the experience of the aging process in Western contemporaneity from a worldly perspective, that is, from the notion that human life is embedded in the sensitive world, in history, in culture. In order to achieve such aim, a phenomenological research was carried out, employing phenomenological interviews and observations in an esthetic center, where emerged fifteen collaborating subjects who were in the life stage of maturity (i.e., within an age between 40 and 60 years old). The results show that the experience of aging is ambiguous: conveying multiple senses, valuating, as well as devaluating and ambivalent, the reactions to this phenomenon contemplate denial, resistance, acceptance and some specific fears. Such results also provide elements that point towards the understanding of aging as a stigmatized experience in a scenario marked by the cult of youth, of beauty, and which imposes an esthetic pattern as an ideal to be accomplished by everyone, being understood that as a biological phenomenon it is 'inevitable' but as a cultural phenomenon it is 'undesirable'. It is confirmed, through this study, the perception of a traditional conception of elderliness, which associates aging to negative attributes at the same time that the identification of the collaborating subjects with a model of elderliness that is more active and dynamic is revealed. Esthetic centers arise as a privileged locus which offer the possibility of attaining a young, beautiful and perfect body, where the alliance between the discourse of science and the discourse of market is carried on, reinforcing the belief that aging can be fought or retarded through various medical and esthetical techniques which provide people with a variety of treatments aimed at the attainment of a younger appearance. Key words: Aging, Contemporaneity, Stigma.

Made available in DSpace on 2019-04-05T23:11:27Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2006-12-27 / The face is a mean of communication with the society, aging in conformity with the way we live and where we live. The cloaking of suffering, may increase the process of alterations occurred on the facial skin, such as; flabby cheeks, wrinkles, marks and senile stains. These are only treated externally by the biomedical model, forgetting to investigate within the human being, his emotions, his soul, the vital energy that may contribute to the aging process when unbalanced. The present society appreciates a lot the youth, leaving the senile isolated and low self-esteemed, disregarded, with no right to treat themselves mainly regarding the beauty, by thinking they are already old and ugly . This study approaches the efficiency noticed by the facial electro acupuncture, a oriental medicine technique, for facial rejuvenation, promoting the energetic balance and welfare of senile women from the Brazilian Northeast. For doing so, the narratives are analyzed before, during and after the consultation, built trough the open interviews accomplishing an ethno evaluation and the efficiency noticed by the senile and the impacts generated during and after the therapy. The pictures were analyzed and compared allowing the researcher to see the difference before and after the facial electro acupuncture and the senile women noticed the difference of their faces before and after intervention. The therapeutic process was analyzed, specially the facial rejuvenation and the transformation of the souls of those senile. The facial electro acupuncture enters in the subjective of the participant women of the research; makes a holistic approach of their health with their thoughts and sufferings. The therapeutic favors a more human contact, not biomedical, leading the accommodated senile to look at themselves physically and emotionally prettier.

Haas, Clarissa Branco January 2013 (has links)
Aging is a risk factor for the development of brain structural and functional alterations associated with neurodegenerative disorders. The loss of neuronal cells along with the disruption of neural systems, mostly in the hippocampus, has been implicated in the cognitive decline associated with aging. A multitude of neurochemical changes modulated by neuroendocrine hormones may participate in this process. Indeed, impaired brain insulin/insulin receptor (IR) signaling that occurs through central insulin resistance is involved in the etiology of cognitive dysfunction and neurodegenerative disorders. The main goal of this study was to assess the effects of intracerebroventricular (ICV) insulin on spatial memory and mitochondrial and neural plasticity in aged rats. Male Wistar rats (young: 4 months and aged: 24-26 months; n= 10-12) were given ICV injections of insulin (20 mU) or vehicle daily over the course of five days. Insulin significantly increased extracellular fluid lactate levels in the hippocampus of young but not in aged rats. Mitochondrial H2O2 production induced by succinate was decreased in aged-insulin group relative to other groups. In addition, the immunocontent of mitochondrial PGC1-α, a biogenesis-stimulate protein, was increased by insulin administration in young animals. Insulin ICV improved spatial memory in the Water Maze task and hippocampal BDNF levels only in young animals. Insulin differentially modulated the hippocampal CA1, CA3 and DG morphology of young and aged rats but increased neurogenesis in CA1 and CA3 regions of aged animals. In summary, aging decreased hippocampal insulin sensitivity regarding lactate metabolism, mitochondrial biogenesis, BDNF expression and neuroplasticity (cell counts and neurogenesis). However, ICV insulin administration was effective in improving neuroplasticity in the hippocampus of aged rats.
