Eucalypt regeneration on the Lower Murray floodplain, South Australia.

George, Amy Kathryn January 2004 (has links)
Vegetation along the River Murray floodplains has been shown to be in a severe state of decline. This decline is amplified by the impositions of river regulation. In South Australia, where vegetation losses have been great, regeneration is limited and may result in not only individual tree losses but also widespread population decline. This study aimed to examine the relationship between river flows and the regeneration process in populations of Eucalyptus camaldulensis and Eucalyptus largiflorens. The current structure of the populations was examined to determine if a viable number of varying age-classed trees were present. Tree surveys conducted at Banrock Station determined that while densities were low for both species, E. camaldulensis had a more sustainable population structure than E. largiflorens. Growth stages for both species illustrated highly clumped distribution, which is believed to correspond with river flooding magnitudes and frequencies. To address the potential link between tree distribution and flooding within the River Murray, a hydrological analysis was conducted for Banrock Station using river flows at the South Australian border from 1900 to 2003. The amount of time growth stages for each species were inundated was found to be greatly reduced under regulated flows compared to natural flows. This has resulted in shifted localized regeneration patterns corresponding with E. camaldulensis' greater demand for inundation than E. largiflorens. Moderate magnitude flows have been most impacted by regulation, and consequently these are the very flows needed for floodplain tree population maintenance. Flowering and seed fall for E. camaldulensis and E. largiflorens were monitored at Banrock Station for 22 months to identify losses in reproductive potential resulting from tree decline. While seed viability was not affected by vigour, trees with visually reduced vigour were found to produce less fruit and had reduced seed fall, as well as a reduced rate of fruit development. Dendrochronological techniques were applied to floodplain trees. Age and size relationships could be established, implying that such techniques can be applied in South Australia to high quality sites. Growth responses within cohorts were similar and easily matched between individuals illustrating cyclic, but not necessarily seasonal correlations. This work verified the preferential selection of younger trees for dendroecological studies, and identified a relationship between on moderate flows and measurable girth expansion in both floodplain tree species. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, 2004.

Induction of polyploidy in Eucalyptus species and interspecific hybrids.

Maritz, Tracy. January 2008 (has links)
A large sector of the forestry industry of South Africa comprises Eucalyptus species, covering approximately 49% of the forestry plantation area. Polyploidy induction has become an attractive tool to increase yield and reduce invasiveness in forestry species. Polyploidy induction in Eucalyptus using colchicine treatments on seed and axillary buds was undertaken to produce tetraploids that could be used in breeding programmes; specifically to increase yield and decrease species invasiveness through the production of triploids after crossing with diploid parents. Eight seedlots of E. urophylla and seven of E. grandis were treated with four colchicine concentrations (0.00, 0.01, 0.03, 0.05%) at two exposure times (18 h and 24 h), treating two seeds per treatment, repeated eight times. For axillary bud induction, 20 buds of two E. grandis clones and three E. grandis × E. urophylla hybrids and one E. grandis × E. nitens hybrid were treated with four colchicine concentrations (0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5%) for three consecutive days. A known tetraploid hybrid E. grandis E. camaldulensis and its corresponding diploid were included as reference material. Seedlings and bud sports were pre-screened by determining stomatal guard cell lengths. Seedlings and bud sports displaying cell lengths significantly (p<0.0001) larger than the diploid were selected as putative polyploids. Polyploidy was then confirmed by quantifying the DNA content using flow cytometry. Stomatal frequencies and guard cell chloroplast frequencies were also determined in the induced tetraploid seedlings to evaluate their suitability to discern between ploids. All putative polyploidy seedlings, identified in the pre-screening process, were confirmed, using flow cytometry, as either tetraploids or mixoploids. Of the 17 E. urophylla putative polyploids, from various seedlots, six were tetraploid and 11 mixoploid. In E. grandis one of the five putative polyploids, from various seedlots, was tetraploid and four mixoploid. Pre-screening of bud sports was less accurate; only four of the 12 E. grandis hybrid putative polyploids were mixoploid and only three of the six E. grandis putative polyploids were mixoploid. E. urophylla seedlings were more sensitive to colchicine than E. grandis seedlings displaying a lower survival rate (52%) than E. grandis (63%). Extreme treatments that caused the lowest survival rates were also responsible for most of the polyploidy successful inductions; 0.05%/18 h and 0.05%/24 h for E. urophylla and 0.03%/24 h and 0.05%/24 h for E. grandis. Phenotypic effects of colchicine included shorter, thicker roots and hypocotyls; darker leaves; longer and narrower leaves in some tetraploids; and asymmetrical leaf margins in many mixoploids and tetraploids compared with the controls. In the tetraploids, stomata were significantly larger (p<0.0001) and less frequent (p<0.001). A significant (p<0.001) increase in the number stomatal chloroplasts was also ascertained. Confirmed mixoploid seedlings all displayed tetraploid leaves based on stomatal size and thus classified as periclinal chimeras. In bud sports, only leaves with islands of diploid and tetraploid stomata in the confirmed mixoploids were encountered. Mixoploid bud sports were thus either sectional or mericlinal chimeras. Stomatal size proved to be a suitable pre-screening method, especially in polyploidy induction in seedlings. Additionally confirmed tetraploids exhibited significantly different stomatal frequencies and stomatal chloroplast frequencies compared with the diploids, thus proving to be suitable detection methods for polyploidy screenings. Polyploidy induction in seed was effective, however, less effective in axillary buds which requires further research to refine methods. / Thesis (M.Sc.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2008.

Developing systems to identify and deploy saline and waterlogging tolerant lines of Eucalyptus occidentalis Endl

Hendrati, Rina Laksmi January 2009 (has links)
[Truncated abstract] Eucalyptus occidentalis, a timber species from south Western Australia, is highly salt and waterlogging tolerant. Screening identified genotypes tolerant of high salt concentrations and waterlogging. Tolerance at provenance, family and individual level, and how phenotypic performance under salt and waterlogging was inherited was explored to provide a breeding population. Salt and/or waterlogged screening was carried out under controlled conditions up to extreme salt levels to determine tolerance between genotypes. This tank method was shown to produce repeatable results. Seedlings of 30 families from 9 provenances were used for screening. At low salt concentration (up to 300 mM NaCl), differentiation occurred for some traits but in general there was only a slight reduction in growth under salt, and waterlogging alone was not detrimental. At high salt concentration (550 mM) differentiation occurred among genotypes for all traits. Equivalent genotypes were also planted in field trials at three sites, two with medium (583 - 847 mm) and one with low rainfall (372 - 469 mm), in southern Western Australia. Survival was low (<53%) after 9 months due to an exceptional dry season followed by 3 months waterlogging in Kirkwood (38 - 1360 mSm-1), but was high >89% after 33 months in saline fields in Sandalwindy (96 - 976 mSm-1) and Roberts (88 - 1424 mSm-1). Some families were similarly in high rank for height under saline conditions in controlled and field trials. Height had the highest narrow-sense heritability value, especially under controlled saltwaterlogging (0.85) treatment and 20% selection enabled a gain of 8-14% under controlled conditions and in the field. Leaf production under salt was not an inherited trait. Systems were developed to hasten deployment of selected material. Extended daylength (16 h) and paclobutrazol (1 mg a.i/mm stem circumference) stimulated flowering in 2 year-old plants. Clonal propagation was possible. Grafting success varied from 0-100% depending on scion/rootstock provenances. ... There was only a slight reduction in heterozygosity from species level to provenance and family levels, and two superior genotypes maintained high diversity. v Crossing was possible using one stop pollination of cut immature styles and capsule retention varied from 0-34% and germination rate from 2-96%. Genetic distance between parents was correlated with seed set and offspring fitness. Wider genetic distances increased capsule retention, seed germination and seedling survival. Under 500 mM salt-waterlogging, offspring heights were similar when parental genetic distances were similar. High heritability value for height from ANOVA-REML parental screening was confirmed using parent-offspring regression. Screened superior genotypes, which withstood very high salt concentration, provide a breeding population for further breeding and for plantations under saline regions in low-medium rainfall areas in Western Australia and other parts of the world. These trees provide an economic return in areas where no other plants may survive and an environmental service in potentially reducing waterlogging, salinity and its spread.

Conceiçao, Marcio Barbosa da 26 June 2013 (has links)

La forêt d'eucalyptus à Addis Abeba : valorisation, gestion et préservation de la ressource boisée dans une capitale en expansion / Eucalyptus forest in Addis Ababa : environmental management and protection in a changing capital

Ayerbe, Delphine 15 December 2016 (has links)
This thesis explores the evolving place of forest areas in a changing African capital. Eucalyptus has been introduced in Addis Ababa more than 100 years ago in order to meet the locals' demand for timber as well as wood fuel. This urban and suburban forest was planted together with the capital's population growth. Yet, the new planning choices made by local authorities promote the advance of a vertical built environment, which is not anymore consistent with the proximity of those productive green areas. Moreover, this variety is highly criticized for its alleged harmful impacts on the environment. This study seeks to give an account of the duality that arise between the will to provide the Ethiopian capital with a modem image and the continuity of popular forestry practices at work on those forest areas. The analysis is based on a qualitative survey of urban authorities and stakeholders of the "eucalyptus' chain" strategies and explores the new environmental practices in Addis Ababa. The over-representation of international stakeholders in the city is an ideal vector for the promotion of global narratives which influence the local authorities' perceptions of that tree. Indeed, local authorities promote some specific functions for the forest, while controlling the access to the resource and the practices linked to the eucalyptus. The tensions that drive the urban authorities' planning choices highlight the difficulties in reconciling environmental and economic stakes in Addis Ababa.

The planted forest sector is one of the drivers of economic development in Brazil. The Eucalyptus is one of the most adopted in reforestation programs, adapting well to Brazilian soil and climate conditions. Studying the climate for doing a good agricultural planning is essential because climate variables are immutable factors in agricultural production. Thus, the models whose climate data input variables, are increasingly used in the planning of forestry activities. This study aimed to identify the climatically homogeneous regions to the south of Brazil, and estimate the potential productivity of Eucalyptus saligna for the same region. The variables used to achieve climate classification were: total annual average rainfall, maximum temperature average annual air temperature of the average annual air relative humidity annual average air and altitude. Climatic data were in a spatial resolution of 0.25 ° x 0.25 ° latitude and longitude of a historical series from 1980 to 2013. For the data of altitude, we used a digital elevation model, obtained through SRTM radar data. To generate the map of climatic groups, the cluster analysis method considering the K nearest neighbors was chosen. To estimate the potential productivity of Eucalyptus plantations saligna for the Southern Region of Brazil was used 3- PG model, parameterized, calibrated and validated by Klippel (2015), considering a production cycle of eight years old. Through the statistical evolution of groups with Davies-Bouldin criteria values it was defined that the ideal number of climatic groups are 9, which generated a thematic map with 9 climatically homogeneous regions to the south of Brazil. The highest annual precipitation values are seen in groups 5 and 8 and group 2 shows the highest average air temperature. volume estimates, average annual increment, breast height diameter and height by 3-PG model behave similarly, with higher yields on the coast of the states of Paraná and Santa Catarina and in the Midwest portion of the South. In Overall, these are the areas with the highest rainfall. They are also areas where not observed air temperatures peak, as the northern region of Parana State, or minimal, such as in areas with high altitudes.

Genetic and environmental control of microfibril angle on Eucalyptus wood : its effects on wood traits and implication for selection / Contrôle génétique et environnemental de l'angle des microfibrilles dans le bois d'Eucalyptus : effets sur les propriétés du bois et implication pour la sélection

Gherardi Hein, Paulo Ricardo 16 June 2011 (has links)
The genetic and environmental control of microfibril angle (MFA), the genetic correlations with other wood and growth traits, and therefore the implications for selection are poorly documented for Eucalyptus. Thus, the objectives of this study were to determine the spatial variation of the MFA, wood density (ρ) and stiffness (E); to determine the relationship between MFA and wood traits and finally to estimate the genetic and environmental control of wood and growth traits from clonal and progeny tests of Eucalyptus in Brazil and Congo. Conventional methods, resonance, X-ray diffraction and spectroscopy were combined to evaluate the wood properties. MFA variation accounted for 44 percent of the variation in specific modulus (E/ρ) of wood. The ρ was the prime determinant on wood stiffness and strength while the MFA played a secondary role. The heritability estimates were moderate to high for the MFA, ρ, E, Klason lignin (KL) and growth traits according to the spatial position and the experimental design. Genetic control of the MFA, ρ and E and their genetic correlations with KL and circumference of 1.3 meters of trees varied with age. The results suggest that tree with potential to grow fast are genetically more likely to produce low ρ and also to decrease the MFA for ensuring stiffness required for their development. Most wood properties were genetically negatively correlated with growth, although favorable genetic correlations between many wood traits were observed. Genetic and environmental correlations were sometimes of opposite signs according to the considered trait. This can be explained by the pleiotropic effect of genes and / or linkage disequilibrium. The implications of these findings for selection strategies are discussed according to the final use of Eucalyptus wood.
