: the reception of Augustine's ontological discourse on the soul in late antiquity and the early Middle Ages

Haverkamp, Simon L. H. January 2013 (has links)
Thesis analyses the reception of Augustine of Hippo's (354-430) ontological discourse on the soul in late antiquity and the early middle ages, more specifically in the sixth and the ninth centuries. Since Augustine never wrote a 'De anima', nor always presented his readers with definite answers to questions, there was room for later authors to interpret and improvise. This thesis focuses on 4 texts: Cassiodorus Senator's 'De anima', Eugippius of Lucculanum's massive florilegium the 'Excerpta ex operibus Sancti Augustini', both from the sixth century, Gottschalk of Orbais' letter 'Quaestiones de anima', and John Scottus Eriugena's apologetic 'De divina praedestinatione liber', both from the ninth century. This thesis establishes that, apart from Cassiodorus, the author's main interest in Augustine's ideas on the ontology of the soul rests on the way it impinges on their contemporary predestination debates. Cassiodorus consciously wanted to produce a Christian De anima in a classical vein. Especially the question of the origin of the soul takes the interest of Eugippius and Gottschalk. This is an important question for predestination debates, since it is supposed to explain technically how original sin came to be universal. Augustine never found a satisfactory answer to this thorny question. Eriugena's genius lies in building an original ontology of the soul on Augustine's own foundations which sidesteps this problem of the origin of the soul entirely.

Venkovské kostely v kontextu architektury raného středověku na Strakonicku / The country churches in the kontext of early medieval architecture in region of Strakonice

Hadravová, Zuzana January 2013 (has links)
Country churches are in the study of early medieval religious architecture the important point. In many cases, as is also the case in South Bohemia, just these shrines become an important group of objects that reflects historic rendition of certain art forms in architecture. A very important part of this theses is dedicated to a general definition of the characteristics of the construction rural churches in the area of central Pootaví. The main part of this work is a catalog of selected rural churches, which provides separate studies with detailed analysis of their construction history. The aim is to introduce the oldest form of each selected sacred sites around Strakonice. Finally, every catalog password is integrated in the system-defined groups according to the most outstanding architectural features. Also each password contents a short assessment of the quality and importance of construction, including efforts to introduce wider relations to artistic center in Strakonice or areas completely remote. Selection of buildings is made up to present rural churches far less known. With some exceptions, these are sights that are not in the literature strongly addressed. The core of the chosen methodological approach in this part of the work has become the basic points of the structural-historical...

January 2009 (has links)
Abstract: Venantius Fortunatus is well represented in bibliographical collections, but most literature concentrates on his poetic production. As a consequence, little attention has been paid to his hagiographyc writings in prose. This work intends to analyse -even if it is from a still insufficiently developed perspective, due to the vast array of studies that these documental sources may prompt-- how Gaulish bishops' of the last quarter of the sixth century built an idealized Episcopal identity through the images of those saints who had previously occupied their respective cathedrals. This was done in order to build up and/or strengthen their religious and political authority before their community of faithful and the public authorities of the Frankish kingdom. / Mestre

Résistance et mutations de la fonction impériale entre Antiquité tardive et Moyen Age : le règne de Zénon (474-491) / Resistance and mutations of the imperial authority between Late Antiquity and Middle Ages : the reign of Zeno (474-491)

Le Coz, Audren 25 November 2017 (has links)
For a long time, scholars identified the deposing of the last Western Emperor in 476 CE as the transition point between Antiquity and the Middle Ages. Over the past few decades, Late Antiquity scholars have reconsidered the importance of this event: continuity would have definitely prevailed, which opened up the path to the promotion of an extended Late Antiquity, from third Century to eighth Century AD. A period of slow evolution, without brutal rupture. However, this argument fails to account for the profound crisis the Roman Empire experienced during the second half of the 5th century CE, in both the East and West. Accordingly, this study examines Emperor Zeno’s (474-491 CE) approach to this widespread crisis of imperial authority, and the dethroning of the last Western emperors. With pragmatism and opportunism, Zeno refashioned the role of emperors for a new world, without renouncing the emperor’s claim to universal authority. A new method of governance appeared, particularly after Basiliskos’ usurpation of the throne (475-476 CE), which forced Zeno to radically revise his internal, external and ecclesiastical policies. Zeno’s moves during his second reign restricted the options of his successors, no matter how strong was their willingness to return to traditional imperial ambitions. Without denying the advances of Late Antiquity studies over the long term, this study illuminates the rapid political events of the years 475-6 CE, particularly in the Eastern half of the Empire. While defending the long historical tradition of imperial power he inherited, Zeno’s historical role was to accept a new world and help usher the Roman Empire into the Middle Ages.

Historické stezky a raně středověké mincovní nálezy. Příspěvek k poznání dálkových a regionálních komunikací v jižních a západních Čechách. / Historical trails and early medieval coin findings. Contribution to knowledge of remote and regional communications in the southern and western Bohemia.

ŠTĚPANČÍK, Zdeněk January 2016 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals about the findings of early medieval coins in the southern and western Bohemia, which are used as a source base for understanding the long-distance and regional communications. The basic sources of research of this subject are early medieval coinage findings with regard to the settlement at that time known primarily from archaeological knowledge. Further consideration is given to the passage of proven historical roads and map background, which caught scenery before the industrial revolution. The main goal of this work is to determine how the findings of early medieval coins associated with long-distance communications. Another aim is to capture all the previously known findings of the study area and to attempt a possible reconstruction of the regional communications, which could interconnect settlement areas. The aim of the work is not and cannot be directly detected historic roads in the field, since the work is guided from above ,,from the table" too large area.

Le pouvoir des anneaux : essais sur la parure digitale du haut Moyen Âge : approche archéologique des objets du sud-ouest de la Gaule / The power of the rings : essay on the finger ornaments during the early Middle Ages : archaeological approach of the objects from southwestern Gaul.

Renou, Julie 14 December 2018 (has links)
The subject-matter is the finger ornaments discovered in archaeological contexts, dating from the 5th to the 9th century. The geographical area ranges from the Loire to the Pyrenees, and from the Atlantic coast to the west of the Rhône. The chronological period, which is quite broad, makes it possible to approach the question of the ancient heritage of the fifth century, which is particularly important in romanised regions. The 9th century corresponds to a sharp decrease in funeral deposits, which are the main contexts for the discovery of ornaments. Studies on rings have so far essentially consisted in the development of a typochronology, whether for Roman Gaul or for the northern Merovingian kingdoms. For this doctoral study a catalogue has been elaborated, it includes more than 300 artifacts for which a classification has been proposed. The uniqueness of this work is based on the analysis of social practices using artifacts from the Southwest. As precious objects, the wearing of rings remains the prerogative of the elite; they are an important marker of social identities, family memory and economic exchanges. In order to fully address this theme, the study is divided into four parts. The first two are devoted to the implementation of the methodology, paying particular attention to the historiographical heritage in which the study is placed. The last two parts are devoted to the inscription of these jewels in the social space of the early Middle Ages. From their manufacture to their reception and transmission, it is a question of documenting the manipulations to which they have been subjected and which have given them their value, up to their burial.

Monete, circolazione ed economia nel Lazio meridionale in età tardoantica e altomedievale / Monnaies, circulation monétaire et économie dans le Latium méridional de l’Antiquité tardive au haut Moyen Âge / Coins, coin’s circulation and economy in the Southern Latium from Late Antiquity to the early middle Ages

Marani, Flavia 15 December 2016 (has links)
This research is mainly based on the use of the monetary instrument – in especial way, the bronze coins – to analyze the economic transformation processes of a specific area: the southern Latium. The coins are from different archaeological contexts: villages, villas, agricultural complex, cemeteries. The contextualization of coins finds, combined with other classes of materials, can allow us to evaluate, in rural context, the possible phenomena of circulation of money in the long period or residuality. The presence, within the heterogeneous money supply in circulation – composed of Roman imperial coins, coins of the Vandals, Ostrogoths and Byzantine coins – of tiny illegible coins, clipped coins and counterfeit coins, it allows us to place these findings in the living heart of the debate of recent years. The monetary instrument does not seem to persist, in daily transactions, which up to the emissions of Justin II, or shortly after. This abrupt break in the circulation of money supply and the apparent absence of issues after the sixth century need explanation, especially if we relate to the continuity of the production of Byzantine mint of Rome.
