Assessing the effectiveness of practitioner training in underprivileged early childhood settingsStretch, Lauren 11 1900 (has links)
This study was conducted in order to assess the effectiveness of practitioner training in underprivileged early childhood settings. The quantitative study set out to test a target group of 800 Grade R children, ranging in age from five to six and a half years, in order to determine the impact that practitioner training on early intervention has on young children.
A pre-test evaluated the initial level of each child‟s abilities, including physical-motor, language and speech, cognitive, play and social and emotional development. Children were placed into control and experimental groups through random selection of practitioners.
The experimental group's teachers (practitioners) underwent an eight-month part-time intervention programme which focused on the importance of early intervention, the domains of development, planning, preparation and assessment as well as encouraging community awareness. The control and experimental groups continued with their normal school programmes, but the practitioners in the experimental group were developing a deeper understanding of early childhood development and activities which enhance development in children.
The results indicate that the impact of effective practitioner training and enhancing a deep understanding of stimulation in young children can have positive, long-term results in children's cognitive ability, laying foundational concepts and scope for development. Vast differences were noted in the ability level of children which were stimulated, as compared with those children who were not as stimulated. / Psychology of Education / D. Ed.
Summaries in Afrikaans and English / Against the background of the social and economic problems of
South Africa, certain aspects of the relatively successful
education system of the Republic of South Korea are examined in
this thesis with the purpose of gaining insight into the
restructuring of the South African educational system and the
influence that education has on society. The thesis is based
mainly on a literature study.
In the interpretation and comparison of information the structural-
functional and systems approaches to educational provision
were used, with the emphasis on the Confucian, African and
Western ways of thinking (mentalities). In the thesis the
contextual factors which influence the particularisation of the
South Korean and South African educational systems are discussed,
with specific reference to pre-school education, vocational and
technical education, teacher training, moral education, parental
involvement, distance and adult education and the financing of
education. Certain conclusions and recommendations regarding
South African education are also made.
onderwys. Sekere gevolgtrekkings en aanbevelings ten opsigte van
Suid-Afrikaanse onderwys word laastens gemaak. / Educational studies / M. Ed. (Vergelykende Opvoedkunde)

Taalverryking van senior kleuters in milieubenadeelde gemeenskappe : 'n ouerprogram / Language enrichment of senior toddlers in environmentally deprived communities : a parental programmeNaudé, Hendrina 08 1900 (has links)

This study focuses on the language development and -enrichment of senior toddlers in
environmentally deprived communities. The research group is an Afrikaans speaking Colouredand
Griqua community. It is evident that parents in this community reveal certain deficiencies
pertaining to their language-teaching behaviour, resulting in linguistic experiential backlogs in
their senior toddlers.
Language development and -enrichment is in essence a socially mediated process and exposure
to stimulating language experiences enhances comprehension of colloquial usage within the
social context. The inadequate linguistic example set by both the family and the community
results in inadequate language development and -enrichment and the senior toddlers reveal their
impoverished, undifferentiated world of language in deficiencies pertaining to mastery of
language, style of language and code of language. The senior toddlers' conceptualization is
deficient and in their language usage they are rather descriptive and concrete-bound than analytic
and abstract.
It is evident that the parents do not adequately stimulate their senior toddlers' cognitive abilities,
and a code of language is not adequately facilitated, because the parents do not know how to
derive profit from incidental learning situations and are ignorant pertaining to the creation and
utilization of potential learning opportunities. Stimulation of cognition refers to the mastery and
fixation.. of certain concepts, while broadening of a code of language refers to the. ability to
describe, to explain, to interpret or to communicate the meaning of these concepts. A broadened
and expanded code of language is thus the result of regular exposure to a wide range of
stimulating experiences. This experiential framework later becomes the toddler's referential
framework which he uses to repeat information, to formulate requests, to name objects and to
accurately describe events. A broadened and expanded code of language is thus essential for
later successful learning, because it enables the learner to analyze, to synthesize and to globalize
new information.
The implication for the draft of a parental programme is that parents should not .only be
accompanied pertaining to the enrichment of their senior toddlers' language development, but
that parents in this deprived environment also explicitly be educated to create potential
stimulating learning situations at home. / Psychology of Education / D. Ed. (Sielkudige Opvoedkunde)

Investigating Grade one teacher perceptions of reception year learner readinessMahan, Sibongile Johannah 02 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to establish the perception of Grade One teachers regarding the school readiness of Reception Year learners in relation to the new national Curriculum Assessment and Policy Statement (CAPS). The study also provides recommendations on how to implement CAPS in Grade R so that teachers, learners and parents experience the easiest possible transition to Grade One.
The research took the form of a case study, building on current trends related to the subject of Reception Year CAPS curriculum implementation, and using the Interpretive approach as its essential, functional paradigm, which focuses on experiences of the world based on the culture and previous experiences of each individual, with an emphasis on mutual understanding. By using this strategy to explore Grade One teacher perceptions regarding the school readiness of the Reception Year learners, this project was centred on an in-depth and detailed analysis of a person, group or situation as a sample of the whole, and involved a systematic collection of data and analysis. This led to a conclusions-based report on the findings, all the while focusing on five Grade One teachers and their Head of Department at a public primary school in Pretoria, Gauteng.
Preliminary findings suggested that learners coming into Grade One could in fact be adequately prepared during Grade R for successful assimilation in the CAPS curriculum material, if all stakeholders overcome the challenges they face during this important phase of academic development.
This study has shown that varying amounts and levels of training amongst the teachers is a hindrance to proper CAPS curriculum implementation and therefore, the Head of Department, the school and ultimately the Department of Education has to ensure parity in the area of teacher training in terms of CAPS curriculum implementation.
The study has shown that, due to the different sites where learners did their Reception Year, the school and the Grade One teachers faced learners who came into their classrooms with differing levels of exposure to the formal schooling system. Some learners may have no CAPS curriculum exposure at all. This means that, if the Department of Education is to succeed in implementing the CAPS curriculum in Grade R, then it needs to assist schools more in the form of providing funds for primary schools to build and add space for the Grade R classrooms.
Finally, the study showed that a language backlog remains one of the main challenges learners have to face. Historically, Early Childhood Development Centres were never required to use English as a medium of instruction. In fact, teaching in the preschool classroom, which includes Grade R, is still mostly done in one of many mother tongue languages, depending on the location of the centre. With the move to make Grade R part of formal schooling and moving the Reception Year class to a primary school, CAPS requires careful curriculum implementation from Grade R to Grade Three, although instruction in English is only required from Grade One. / Curriculum and Instructional Studies / M. Social context, social cohesion and interventions: an assessment of early childhood development (ECD) programmes in selected communities in the Cape FlatsSonnenberg, Edwina Samantha 01 1900 (has links)
Text in English with abstracts in English, isiZulu, and isiXhosa / South Africa’s education system is in crisis. Problems in education directly impact the country’s economy through its influence on skills development for employability. Young children trapped in an environment under serviced by educational resources and haracterised poor social cohesion cannot reach their full potential. This study,
undergirded by Bronfenbrenner’s ecological model, sought to establish whether stateled early childhood development centres (ECDCs) in the Cape Flats can establish social cohesion and foster responsible citizenship and youth resilience. A qualitative study was conducted in selected ECDCs. Focus group interviews with caregivers of children from sampled centres and face-to-face interviews with the owners/managers of centres were augmented by an interview with an official from local government. The study concluded that the sampled ECDCs are merely coping, but restricted by various problems. They cannot function optimally as institutions for community development,
although the community holds them in high esteem. Recommendations are made for improvements. / Uhlelo lwemfundo yaseNingizimu Afrika lunezingxaki. Teachers' understanding and use of digital play for language acquisition in Grade RVan der Westhuizen, Leonie Magdalena 11 1900 (has links)
Teachers tend to use traditional teaching methods, even though young learners are more digitally oriented. The purpose of this study was to analyse teachers' understanding and practices in grade R classes to clarify their use of digital play for language acquisition. The participants consisted of eight grade R teachers at one selected primary school in an urban area that had access to digital technology. Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory as a theoretical framework informed this study. This qualitative single case study generated data from teacher participants and their interaction with the learners. The data generation included semi-structured individual interviews, focus group interviews, and non-participant observations. Analyses to answer the research questions were conducted by means of thematic analysis. The main finding was that grade R teachers have some knowledge and understanding of digital play and they are willing to try new games, but they feel they need to know more about digital technology and the use of digital games for language acquisition. Recommendations include the need for the development of more digital games relevant to language acquisition and for teachers to adopt relevant pedagogies to benefit from available digital games. A similar study in a rural area and a comparison between this study and such a study will then be useful in determining teachers' understanding and use of digital play for language acquisition. Hierdie studie is geïnspireer deur Bronfenbrenner se ekologiese stelselteorie as ʼn teoretiese raamwerk. / Barutiši ba na le go šomiša mekgwa ya sekgale ya go ruta, le ge e le gore baithuti ba baswa ba na le tsebo ya theknolotši.
