Medicinal properties of some plants used for the treatment of skin disorders in the O. R. Tambo and Amathole Municipalities of the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa

The use of medicinal plants for treatment of skin infections and improvement of skin tone was assessed. The study covered Amathole and OR Tambo municipalities of the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The study sought to identify and document some medicinal plants which are used by the indigenous people on the skin, evaluate some biological properties which attribute to their use for therapeutic use. This report provides ethnobotanical data on some plant which were identified. Six medicinal plants (Kniphofia drepanophylla, Gnidia capitata, Hypoxis hemerocallidea, Syzgium cordatum, Macaranga capensis and Protorhus longifolia) which were implicated for treatment of skin diseases were screened for their antibacterial and antioxidant properties. Guided questionnaires were used to interview and gather ethnobotanical information from the traditional healers. Members of the communities which were indicated to be knowledgeable on use of medicinal plants in the areas were visited and interviewed. The results revealed that a total of 45 plant species distributed in 41 Genera belonging to 28 Families are used for treatment of skin infections and improvement of skin texture. The plant medicines were reported to be used as remedies against common skin problem such as wounds, pimples, acnes and itches. Some were reported to have anti-inflammatory effect on the skin while other were reported to oil dry skin and prevent skin dryness and dry eczematous conditions. Others like Cassipourea flanaganii, and Spirostachys africana were commonly used to enlighten skin and protect skin from ultra-violet radiation. The most common mode of preparation of these medicinal plants was pastes or decoctions. Sometimes crushed plant materials were put in bathing water or boiled and steamed on affected parts. It was reported that mixing pastes with oil, animal fat and milk improve medicinal properties. Water, methanol and acetone extracts of K. drepanophylla, G. capitata, H. hemerocallidea, S. cordatum, M. capensis and P. longifolia were screened against five strains of Gram negative bacteria. The results revealed that water extracts from five plant species inhibited two or more strains of bacteria with the most common minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) ranging between 5,0 to 10,0 mg/ml with the exception of aqueous extracts of K. drepanophylla which failed to inhibit all strains of bacteria. The screening of methanol extract of these plants for antioxidant and free radical activity revealed a significant activity with 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) free radical (DPPH). The extracts of P. longifolia, G. capitata, M. capensis, S. cordutum and H. hemerocallidea showed significantly higher free radical scavenging activity with IC50 of ranging from about 11.0 to 41.2 μg/ ml while the IC50 value for K. drepanophylla could not be determined at 100 μg/ ml. Generally the study showed that medicinal plants still play a very important role in the health care delivery system, especially in the O R Tambo and Amathole municipalities of the Eastern Cape. Botanical medicine remains pivotal in the treatment of skin ailments and improvement of the skin tone.

Microfinance and welfare of households in Ngcobo villages in the Eastern Cape Province

This research examined the effectiveness of microfinance on welfare of rural households in Ngcobo in the Eastern Cape through an administered survey. The study targeted fifty households based on convenience sampling technique and used a number of welfare indicators but selected food consumption patterns; roof, floor and walls of the main dwelling house; cooking fuel used and transport, livestock and household appliances and electronics asset ownership patterns to derive household welfare index. The derived household welfare index of those households which have had microfinance access was then compared with that of those households that have never accessed microfinance. The general idea was that microfinance access would result in relatively higher welfare. The study found microfinance access to have a significantly high impact t highly on household welfare index of those households that had participated in microfinance in Ngcobo. The higher household welfare index meant that microfinance beneficiaries had relatively higher protein consumption patterns, used more durable material for roofs, wall and floors of their main dwellings, had better asset ownership patterns in particular variety of household appliances and electronics. The study also found that there are other control variable such as employment, age, household size and education that interfere with access to microfinance. Lastly, the study also found that that distance of a household from a microfinance outlet or institutions plays a significant hindrance factor in microfinance access. In other words, those households in Mjanyana and Clarkebury, which are situated within more than 40 kilometres from the microfinance institutions, had lower microfinance access. Based on the findings, the study recommends that policy makers in the province pay attention in refining the policy to ensure that control variables identified to interfere with microfinance access do not close out the intended beneficiaries of microfinance. Also, the study recommends that policy makers and microfinance institutions be innovative in ensuring those in deep rural areas are offered the same opportunity to access microfinance within Ngcobo, despite their distance from the microfinance outlets.

The geographic distribution of ticks in the eastern region of the Eastern Cape Province

The objective of the study was to determine the species composition and geographic distribution of ticks in the eastern region of the Eastern Cape Province. Ninety out of a total of 1 057 communal cattle dip-tanks in the region were selected by means of a table of random numbers, and 72 of these were eventually allocated to the survey. At each of the chosen dip-tanks an attempt was made to collect ticks from five cattle, five goats, five dogs and two hen coops, and free-living ticks from the vegetation by means of flannel strips, and ticks were collected from January 2004 and 2005 to May 2004 and May 2005 respectively. The geographic coordinates of the dip-tanks at which the ticks were collected were recorded, and used for plotting the distributions of the various tick species. The ticks were stored in 70 % ethyl alcohol in internally labelled vials for later identification and counting. Eleven ixodid tick species were collected from cattle, goats, dogs and the vegetation, namely Amblyomma hebraeum, Haemaphysalis elliptica, Haemaphysalis spinulosa, Hyalomma marginatum rufipes, Ixodes pilosus group, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) decoloratus, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus, Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi, Rhipicephalus sanguineus and Rhipicephalus simus. Of these R. e. evertsi and R. appendiculatus were the most numerous, and constituted 38.8 % and 34.9% of the 13 768 ticks collected respectively. They were followed by R. (B.) microplus (17.4 %) and A. hebraeum (5.3%). Two argasid tick species were collected, namely Otobius megnini from the ear canals of two cattle, and Argas walkerae from fowl houses. A. walkerae was collected from 102 (70.8%) of 144 fowl houses in the vicinity of 57 (79.2%) of the 72 selected dip-tanks, and seemed to be present only when there was wood in the structure of the fowl house. Adult A. hebraeum was present in areas where there are trees and bush as well as grass, particularly along the coast, but also surprisingly far inland beyond the distribution limits previously illustrated for it. R. (B.) microplus, R. appendiculatus and R. e. evertsi were present throughout the survey area region, and from their distribution maps there are strong indications that the exotic R. (B.) microplus is displacing the indigenous R. (B.) decoloratus in this region. A large percentage of goats were infested with the adults of ticks normally associated with cattle, namely A. hebraeum, R. (B.) microplus, R. appendiculatus and R. e. evertsi. A more significant finding, however, is the large proportion of R. (B.) microplus females measuring 5 mm or more in length on the goats, a good indication that they were successfully completing their life cycles. In the light of these findings, it is imperative to include goats in any tick control programme aimed at controlling a tick-borne disease outbreak in sympatric cattle. Eight ixodid tick species were collected from the dogs, and H. elliptica, followed by R. appendiculatus and R. simus were present on these animals at the largest number of dip-tanks. Factors which influence the academic achievement of senior secondary pupils in the rural Eastern Cape

This research was conducted to confirm and identify possible and intrinsic factors which may influence the academic achievement of senior secondary pupils in the rural Eastem Cape. The literature study indicates that factors such as parental involvement, motivation, the role of teachers and peers as well as learners' attribution of meaning, involvement, and experience have a direct influence on academic achievement. To confmn the influence of the above factors, the researcher conducted a structured interview with ten respondents, consisting of four pupils, their parents and two teachers. Questions to parents investigated their relationship with theii·children in terms of discipline, motivation as well as involvement in their education. Questions to pupils investigated their relationship with their parents, teachers, peers and self. Learners' level of self-actualization in terms of attribution of meaning, involvement, experience and self-concept was also examined. The research revealed that most of the parents are not adequately involved in their children s education, and the fmdings confirmed this as an extrinsic factor that influenced the learners achievement. The findings also indicated that teachers have somewhat lost sight of their role in promoting learners' potential, contributing to the high failure rate in the Eastern Cape rural schools. The fmdings further confirmed that the learners level of self­ actualization, in terms of attribution of meaning, involvement and experience influences academic achievement. Addressing issues of overcrowdedness in Eastern Cape Schools

Issues of overcrowdedness in Eastern Cape schools have become very prominent in the media. The qualitative research in this study reiterates its existence and its implications for both learners and teachers. A need exists to curb the declining schooling standards. Large-scale in-service teacher training in an immediate joint effort by the Education Department and the school is necessary to address these serious issues. Classroom situations with low pupil:teacher ratios, classroom atmospheres conducive to teaching and learning, and an improved quality of education should be strived for. The effective attainment of the ideals of outcomes-based education requires improved teacher management and leadership to better disciplined classes. The treatment of any backlogs and inequalities evident in overcrowded classes should aim mainly at the upliftment of disadvantaged learners, who are still suffering under the effects of the previous education dispensation. Relevant recommendations and a suggested model to rectify the situation are proposed. / Oorbevolkingsvraagstukke in skole in die Oos-Kaap geniet aansienlike aandag in die media. Die kwalitatiewe navorsing van hierdie studie fokus op die voorkoms en implikasies daarvan vir beide die leerders en onderwysers. Daar bestaan 'n behoefte om dalende onderrigstandaarde te verbeter. Grootskaalse indiensopleiding vir onderwysers in 'n onmiddellike gesamentlike paging deur die Onderwysdepartement en die skoal is noodsaaklik om hierdie emstige probleem aan te spreek. Daar moet gestreef word na meer voordelige klaskameromstandighede met 'n laer leerder:onderwyserverhouding, 'n klaskameratmosfeer wat bevorderlik is vir onderrig en leer asook 'n verbeterde opvoedingskwalitiet. Die effektiewe verwesenliking van uitkomsgebaseerde onderrig verg verbeterde leerkrag beheer en leidinggewing aan beter gedissiplineerde klasse. An investigation into factors that influence parental involvement in the development of their children's literacy in the secondary school level: a case study of a combined school in the Eastern Cape

The main purpose of this research was to investigate the factors that influence parental involvement in the development of their children's literacy in the senior phase. The concept of parental involvement has been perceived as one of the cornerstones that contribute positively to the effectiveness of the education that children receive. In the South African case, it is embodied in the legislation and is expected to permeate the education process at all levels. Many scholars perceive parental involvement as enhancing the development of children's literacy. As an interpretive orientated study, this research had an interest in understanding the subjective experiences and general factors that influence parental involvement in the development of their children's literacy in the secondary school level. In line with the protocols of the case study, this study used a combination of methods namely structured interviews, semi-structured interviews, focus groups and document analysis in collecting data. The findings of the study revealed different opinions on parental involvement. While some parents appreciate the importance of their involvement, there were, however, some parents who perceive it as a responsibility of educators. Despite these views, there were positive contributions that have been brought about by parental involvement in the development of their children's literacy. The study has also revealed that there are factors that influence parental involvement in the development of their children's literacy in the senior phase such as parents' lack of understanding of their roles, absence of guiding documents, lack of unity among stakeholders, age and qualifications. By means of an extensive literature search, the term motivation was iluminated and the phenomenon of motivation was explored through different motivational theories.. An empirical inquiry through semi-structured interviews with educators and school managers were conducted in the Eastern Cape to determine the factors contributing to the motivation of educators.. The findings in this research showed that educators are motivated or demotivated by a variety of factors.
