The results of the multi-criteria analyses were compared between themselves and after that with the use of the ground suggested by the Ecological-Economic Zoning (ZEE-MT). The similarities between the maps of sustainability demonstrated averages between the hydroelectric and the tourism sectors, as well as when compared to the areas of farming. The similarities between the sectors of farming were all congruent between themselves, with prominence of the interactions enterprise and cattle agriculture, and familiar agriculture and the farming sector. The results of the similarities between the maps of sustainability and the uses of the ground suggested by the ZZE-MT, the associations in their majority were low to average, except for the tourism sector that had a better association. Barriers and Bridges for Establishing Agroforestry : A qualitative study of Swedish land use policy in relation to agroforestry / Barriärer och broar för Etablering av Agroforestry : En kvalitativ studie av svensk markanvändningspolitik i relation till agroforestry

Pasquier, Linnéa January 2020 (has links)
Numerous scholars describe agroforestry as an extraordinary food production system that generates viable ecosystems and accommodates regenerative capabilities. Agroforestry may therefore be a promising solution to the future environmental challenges facing food production. This multifunctional land management system is practised in temperate and tropical regions alike, however, it exists to a remarkably limited extent in Sweden. This research points to the complexities in agricultural and forestry policy as a main barrier for wider agroforestry adoption. The foundation of inquiry is thus to analyze various Swedish legislatives and support systems that either facilitate or adverse agroforestry practice, through the lens of political ecology. The research findings derive from a qualitative study, consisting of conducted interviews with key stakeholders in Swedish agricultural and forestry policy. The study contends that a core obstacle for agroforestry development is the dualistic approach to governmental sectors, i.e. forestry and agriculture, and the lack of coordination between them, since agroforestry cannot be classified as neither . A perpetual policy prioritized towards large-volume crop yields, rapid production, large scale investments, calculative assessments and a competitive business sector is moreover identified. The research asserts that these hegemonic discourses permeating policy, consequently act as a disincentive for agroforestry adoption due to the ofttimes long implementation period, high initial investment and uncertain food market for agroforestry produce. In addition, the study illustrates that cultural expectations of landscape mainly give trees a cultural and environmental value, therein neglecting the multifunctionality of woody vegetation - which hence suggest a lack of a holistic approach to food systems. The thesis finally argues that these hegemonic discourses concerning assessment and management of land, together influence the design of state policy and farmers’ attitude towards agroforestry systems. Overall, current policy regulations portray a rather static and incomplete way of managing the dynamic symbiosis of multifunctional food systems.

No. of bitstreams: 1 PGEF16MA060.pdf: 200273 bytes, checksum: c59f22cc1e5f18c0272f4b828aab3423 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-02-26 / Capes / This work aimed to evaluate the influence of landscape structure on the floristic-structural organization and the demographics rates of the tree component of Araucaria Forest fragments in South Plateau of Santa Catarina State, in Brazil. Studies of this nature are important to the development of conservation strategies in fragmented landscapes, situation of the study area. Two chapters are presented, in the first i) the influence of landscape structure on the floristic-structural patterns in forest fragments was analyzed; and in the second ii) the inter-relationships between the landscape spatial configuration x floristic-structural organization x demographics rates of tree component were verified in a system formed by forest fragments and corridors. For nine forest fragments in the region, surrounding land cover maps and landscape metrics (shape, connectivity and influence of edge) were generated from the Landsat 8 satellite images; and information about floristic-structural composition of tree component was obtained. For the forest fragment-corridor system the demographics rates for a four years period (2010-2014) were also obtained. The data were analyzed through Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Non-Metric Multidimensional Scaling (NMDS), Principal Coordinates Analysis (PCoA), Structural Equations Models, and Generalized Linear Models (GLM). In the first chapter, it was observed that the spatial configuration of the fragments in the landscape (shape complexity and area) and the surrounding land cover (forest, swamp, grassland, urbanization) significantly influenced the floristic-structural organization of the arboreal vegetation. In the second chapter, it was evidenced that the floristic-structural organization of the tree component was influenced by landscape spatial configuration and the tree abundance; and the demographics rates were only influenced by 14 vegetation structure (abundance and basal area). We conclude that the landscape spatial configuration influences the floristic-structural organization in FOM areas and that demographic rates of the tree component are determined primarily by structural aspects, which reflect the successional stage of vegetation / A presente dissertação objetivou avaliar a influência da estrutura da paisagem sobre a organização florística-estrutural e sobre as taxas demográficas do componente arbóreo de fragmentos de Floresta Ombrófila Mista (FOM) no Planalto Sul Catarinense.

Optimising urban green networks in Taipei City : linking ecological and social functions in urban green space systems

Shih, Wan-Yu January 2010 (has links)
With the global population becoming more urban and less rural, increasingly research has argued for concepts such as establish Green Infrastructure (GI) as a tool for enhancing wildlife survival and human’s living quality (e.g. Harrison et al., 1995; Benedict and McMahon, 2006). However, an interdisciplinary planning approach underpinned by ecological and social evidence has not yet been fully developed. This research therefore seeks to integrate an ecological network with a green space planning standard by exploring the use of biotope and sociotope mapping methods. Seeking a comprehensive planning that takes all green resources into account, a green space typology is firstly developed according to Taiwanese contexts for identifying green spaces from land use maps. In order to specify effective features of these green spaces to bird survival and user preferences, an insight was conducted into the relationship of ‘birds and urban habitats’, as well as ‘human preferred urban green spaces’ in Taipei City. Important environmental factors influencing bird distribution and influencing human experiences in urban green spaces are respectively specified and developed into an ecological value index (EVI) to detail potential habitats and a social value index (SVI) to evaluate recreational green space provision. Interestingly, proximity to green space appears to plays a more critical role in human preferences than bird survival in Taipei city; size is important both as a habitat and for creating an attractive green space; and green space quality tends to be a more significant factor than its structure for both wildlife and people. Utilising the bio-sociotope maps, this thesis argues for a number of strategies: conserving, enlarging, or creating large green spaces in green space deficient areas; increasing ecological and recreational value by enhancing green space quality of specific characteristics; and tackling gravity distance by combining green space accessibility and attractiveness in optimising urban green structure. As these suggestions are a challenge to apply in intensively developed urban areas, barriers from land use, political mechanisms, technical shortages, and cultural characteristics are also explored with possible resolutions presented for facilitating implementation. It is clear that optimising a multifunctional GI for both wildlife and people requires interdisciplinary knowledge and cooperation from various fields. The EVI and SVI developed within this thesis create the potential for a more place-specific and quantifiable green spaces strategy to help better link ecological and social functions in urban areas.

Indikatoren zur Landschaftsvielfalt

Walz, Ulrich January 2012 (has links)

Living the law of origin : the cosmological, ontological, epistemological, and ecological framework of Kogi environmental politics

Parra Witte, Falk Xué January 2018 (has links)
This project engages with the Kogi, an Amerindian indigenous people from the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountain range in northern Colombia. Kogi leaders have been engaging in a consistent ecological-political activism to protect the Sierra Nevada from environmentally harmful developments. More specifically, they have attempted to raise awareness and understanding among the wider public about why and how these activities are destructive according to their knowledge and relation to the world. The foreign nature of these underlying ontological understandings, statements, and practices, has created difficulties in conveying them to mainstream, scientific society. Furthermore, the pre-determined cosmological foundations of Kogi society, continuously asserted by them, present a problem to anthropology in terms of suitable analytical categories. My work aims to clarify and understand Kogi environmental activism in their own terms, aided by anthropological concepts and “Western” forms of expression. I elucidate and explain how Kogi ecology and public politics are embedded in an old, integrated, and complex way of being, knowing, and perceiving on the Sierra Nevada. I argue that theoretically this task involves taking a realist approach that recognises the Kogi’s cause as intended truth claims of practical environmental relevance. By avoiding constructivist and interpretivist approaches, as well as the recent “ontological pluralism” in anthropology, I seek to do justice to the Kogi’s own essentialist and universalist ontological principles, which also implies following their epistemological rationale. For this purpose, I immersed myself for two years in Kogi life on the Sierra, and focused on structured learning sessions with three Mamas, Kogi spiritual leaders and knowledge specialists. I reflect on how this interaction was possible because my project was compatible with the Mamas’ own desire to clarify and contextualise the Kogi ecological cause. After presenting this experience, I analyse the material as a multifaceted, interrelated, and elaborate system to reflect the organic, structured composition of Kogi and Sierra, also consciously conveyed as such by the Mamas. I hereby intend to show how the Kogi reproduce, live, and sustain this system through daily practices and institutions, and according to cosmological principles that guide a knowledgeable, ecological relationality with things, called ‘the Law of Origin’. To describe this system, I develop a correspondingly holistic and necessary integration of the anthropological concepts of cosmology, ontology, epistemology, and ecology. Based on this, I argue that Kogi eco-politics are equally embedded in this system, and constitute a contemporary attempt to maintain their regulatory relations with the Sierra Nevada and complement their everyday care-taking practices and rituals. In Kogi terms, this continuity and coherence is a moral imperative and environmental necessity. Thus framing and clarifying Kogi eco-politics may enrich insights into the nature of indigenous ecological knowledge, and may help address environmental problems.
