Designing a program of refresher course for editors and publishers

А., Eskova, E. A. January 2021 (has links)
The aim of this final qualification work is to develop a program of refresher course for editors and publishers for it further implementation at the Department of Publishing of UrFU. Before writing this program, the specification documents were studied. Also, in order to understand what is already available on the market ofrefresher courses, the programs of universities and commercial organizations were analyzed, their strengths and weaknesses were identified. In the second chapter of the work a sociological survey was conducted in order to identify criteria for assessing the quality of courses. A survey of potential target audience showed which topics are the most interesting for the listeners, which training format is the most convenient for them, and what price they are willing to pay for such refresher courses. After analyzing all the responses and the information received, a pilot program of refresher courses for editors and publishers, consisting of 17 theoretical and practical topics, was drawn up.

Editor Design in the Context of Control System Simulation

Fadden, Leon 01 January 1986 (has links) (PDF)
Advances in microcomputer display devices and support software during the past decade have made the microcomputer an increasingly popular vehicle for technical education. This is especially apparent in the area of simulation. The pedagog can provide the student of control theory not merely with the block diagrams and differential algebra but with high resolution color graphic animations supported by mathematical models whose parameters are easily changed by some editor facility. This mode of control system design and behavior study is both faster and more enjoyable for the student, providing greater continuity, concentration, and learning efficiency. This paper describes the simulation of a PID two-tank level control system. The System is at most fourth-order and provides a good introduction to system control theory. The model is not unusual, and its nonlinear fourth-order Runge-Kutta solution is straightforward. Simulation itself takes form as (1) a graphical animation in which the user is aware of changing water levels and pipe flows and (2) a numerical multi-column output of system inputs, state variables, and outputs. Both applications are very user-friendly. A special editor is developed, under which the above applications run. This paper is not a thorough treatment of the control system; a course is required here. Instead, the focus is on the editor and the organization of its Pascal source code. Discussed are a general editor concept and object-oriented code template to which any mathematical driver and associated simulators may be adapted. The editor’s source code is designed to be programmer-friendly so that the uninitiated programmer may rapidly assimilate editor structure and continue development.

Publishing Freedom: African American Editors and the Long Civil Rights Struggle, 1900-1955

Fraser, Rhone Sebastian January 2012 (has links)
The writings and the experience of independent African American editors in the first half of the twentieth century from 1901 to 1955 played an invaluable role in laying the ideological groundwork for the Black Freedom movement beginning with the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The anti-imperialist writings of Pauline Hopkins who was literary editor of the Colored American Magazine from 1900 to 1904 celebrated revolutionary leaders, and adopted an independent course that refused partisan lines, which prompted her replacement as editor according to a letter she writes to William Monroe Trotter. The anti-imperialist writing of A. Philip Randolph as editor of The Messenger from 1917 to 1928, raised the role of labor organizing in the advancement of racial justice and helped to provide future organizers. These individuals founded the Southern Negro Youth Congress an analytical framework that would help organize thousands of Southern workers against the Jim Crow system into labor unions. Based on the letters he wrote to the American Fund For Public Service, Randolph raised funds by appealing to the values that he believed Fund chair Roger Baldwin also valued while protecting individual supporters of The Messenger from government surveillance. The anti-imperialist writing of Paul Robeson as chair of the editorial board of Freedom from 1950 to 1955 could not escape McCarthyist government surveillance which eventually caused its demise. However not before including an anti-fascist editorial ideology endorsing full equality for African Americans that inspired plays by Alice Childress and Lorraine Hansberry that imagined a world that defies the increasingly fascist rule of the American state. This thesis will argue that the Black Freedom Struggle that developed after the fifties owed a great deal to Hopkins, Randolph, and Robeson. The work that these three did as editors and writers laid a solid intellectual, ideological, and political foundation for the later and better known moment when African American would mobilize en masse to demand meaningful equality in the United States. / African American Studies

Editors, artists and the changing status of manga in Japanese society, 1986-1995

Kinsella, Sharon January 1996 (has links)
The contemporary Japanese manga industry began in 1959 when the first weekly manga magazines were published. Throughout the 1960s publishing companies attracted a large adult readership by incorporating radical political themes and realistic drawing styles in manga magazines. The readership continued to expand throughout the 1970s and 1980s and manga became a mass medium on a similar scale to television or pop-music. This thesis identifies two distinct trends in the cultural status of manga which were developing from the mid-1980s onwards. On the one hand, what had previously been seen as 'commercial' manga became respected as an 'art' form and highbrow communication medium. On the other, manga was vilified as pornography and as the extreme expression of an increasingly fragmented society. In the former trend, prestigious corporations sponsored a new category of 'information' manga, whilst in the latter, 'girls' and 'otaku' manga genres were censured by a quasi-governmental censorship movement. The amateur manga subculture in particular became the focus of a 'moral panic' where those involved were characterised as isolated and socially dysfunctional. This thesis, based on ten months' participant observation and intensive interviews in 'Morning' manga magazine editorial office in 1994, examines how this editorial was influenced by the changing status of manga in Japanese society in the formulation of its editorial policy and production methods. Editors felt that in the 1990s social changes presented the manga industry with serious production problems - in particular, a dearth of 'good' artists who could produce social themes, and a shrinking readership. Morning editorial attempted to overcome these problems by pioneering a new form of artistic, high-quality and respectable adult manga, aimed at older and more socially-elite readers. By creating a new proactive intellectual role for manga editors at the same time as sponsoring experimental graphic styles, Morning editorial produced a distinctive new form of conservative, state-supporting social and political adult manga. The re-definition of specific genres of manga as 'art' by Japanese institutions was paralleled by changes in commercial manga production which privileged the social and intellectual interests of editors over those of readers and artists. This study concludes that editors have become increasingly impo7tant in manga production between 1986 and 1995, and that there is a tight interrelationship between commercial cultural production and broader cultural and social discourses generally.

The Attitudes of Selected Texas Reporters and Editors Toward Video Display Terminals

Breedlove, James J. 08 1900 (has links)
This study is concerned with determining the effects that video display terminal use had on reporters' and editors' attitudes toward their jobs and the machines themselves. Data for this investigation were obtained with questionnaires returned from seventy-one reporters and editors who use video terminals in their daily work. Questionnaire data were supplemented with interview data from thirteen questionnaire respondents, Ten hypotheses in five categories were tested with the t test. Four additional hypotheses were tested with raw data. Findings showed that video terminal use enhanced perceived job professionalism and made respondents think they should make more money. Attitudes toward video terminals improved after use of the devices, and respondents recognized the value of video terminal training in college,

Chérif, Asma 26 November 2012 (has links)
Afin de valider notre approche tous nos algorithmes ont été implémentés en Java et testés sur la plateforme distribuée Grid'5000 / The importance of collaborative systems in real-world applications has grown significantly over the recent years. The majority of new applications are designed in a distributed fashion to meet collaborative work requirements. Among these applications, we focus on Real-Time Collaborative Editors (RCE) that provide computer support for modifying simultaneously shared documents, such as articles, wiki pages and programming source code by dispersed users. Although such applications are more and more used into many fields, the lack of an adequate access control concept is still limiting their full potential. In fact, controlling access in a decentralized fashion for such systems is a challenging problem, as they need dynamic access changes and low latency access to shared documents. In this thesis, we propose a generic access control model based on replicating the shared document and its authorization policy at the local memory of each user. We consider the propagation of authorizations and their interactions. We propose a optimistic approach to enforce access control in existing collaborative editing solutions in the sense that a user can temporarily violate the access control policy. To enforce the policy, we resort to the selective undo approach in order to eliminate the effect of illegal document updates. Since, the safe undo is an open issue in collaborative applications. We investigate a theoretical study of the undo problem and propose a generic solution for selectively undoing operations. Finally, we apply our framework on a collaboration prototype and measure its performance in the distributed grid GRID?5000 to highlight the scalability of our solution

The effect of ethnic background on the gatekeeping process in Bahraini newspapers : coverage of the war in Iraq

Al-Saken, Hesham January 2008 (has links)
This study, which may be considered the first of its kind to be conducted on Bahraini newspapers, attempted to provide an insight on the inner workings of these newspapers. The knowledge from this study provides a spring board for other studies to follow and venture into ethnic backgrounds and its affect on media coverage. The main focus was on the coverage of the war in Iraq by two Bahraini newspapers (Al Ayam and Al Wasat) and the gatekeeping process. Both newspapers exhibited a gatekeeping process which was influenced by their ethnic background. Editors of both Al Ayam and Al Wasat exercised gatekeeping on the stories that they published about the war in Iraq promoting their own ethnic group (Sunni or Shiite). The findings in this study presented a new characteristic that seemed to have a direct influence on the gatekeeping process. Ethnic background has never been associated with the gatekeeping process in news coverage. Results of the content analysis undertaken in this study reflected how the ethnic backgrounds of the editors in both newspapers did influence news selection and newspreference. / Department of Journalism

Abstract: This report has the purpose of knowing the creation process and production of infantile literature books, through the author and illustrator Odilon Moraes' view. The corpus is composed by three works published by Cosac Naify Publish House, written and illustrated by the cited author: "A Princesinha Medrosa" (2nd edition, 2008), "Pedro e Lua" (2004) and "O Presente" (2010). The research turns to the singularity of the ways of creation and production, through the analysis of child's representations and conceptions, literature and art which conceive a certain circumscribed game in the production pole, by this author and this publish house. To get these conclusions, it was raised the following questions: in the case of infantile literature, how are the infantile reader's representations suggested in the moment of the work creation by the authors? How's the game in the production pole when we think of this author and this publish house? How does this game question (or not) the habitual game tied to a market and consumption society? To seek answers, we take as documentary source, the interviews with the author; with Isabel Lopes Coelho, editor of the children and teenager literature catalogue by Cosac Naify, and with Maria Carolina Sampaio de Araújo, designer. On this way, the report has its methodological procedure tied to the performed interviews, the analysis on the chosen books, the pursuit in many research sources about thesis and dissertations once elaborated on the theme ?infantile literature?. Some contributions that came from Culture History (Chartier, 1990 e 2001) show that if we take the people involved in these processes as sources and objects of our investigation, we enter the field of own representations of a time or of a space. Thinking with the freedom (always conditioned) of each person, Certeau (2007) offers us contributions about the ways of researching, as well as a deepening in the discussions about the strategies of whom detains the power (the publish house). In Ginzburg (1989, 2006), we have contributions for the study of a particular case (an author, a publish house), that may be representative of a certain historical time. With Norbert Elias (2001), we have contributions brought by Sociology when we study not an author and a publish house in particular, but the function of this author and this publish house not in the action of making a book, but in the constitution of a net or a game in which they are inscribed. Scott and Nikolajeva (2011), Hunt (2010), Linden (2011) bring contributions to current overview of infantile literature. Arroyo (1988), Coelho (2010), Lajolo and Zilberman (2007) place this research in time and space, through a historical overview. / Mestrado / Educação, Conhecimento, Linguagem e Arte / Mestra em Educação
