Academic Performance as a Predictor of Student Growth in Achievement and Mental Motivation During an Engineering Design Challenge in Engineering and Technology Education

Mentzer, Nathan 01 December 2008 (has links)
The purpose of this correlational research study was to determine if students’ academic success was correlated with: (a) the student change in achievement during an engineering design challenge; and (b) student change in mental motivation toward solving problems and critical thinking during an engineering design challenge. Multiple experimental studies have shown engineering design challenges increase student achievement and attitude toward learning, but conflicting evidence surrounded the impact on higher and lower academically achieving students. A high school classroom was chosen in which elements of engineering design were purposefully taught. Eleventh-grade student participants represented a diverse set of academic backgrounds (measured by grade point average [GPA]). Participants were measured in terms of achievement and mental motivation at three time points. Longitudinal multilevel modeling techniques were employed to identify significant predictors in achievement growth and mental motivation growth during the school year. Student achievement was significantly correlated with science GPA, but not math or communication GPA. Changes in achievement score over time are not significantly correlated with science, math, or communication. Mental motivation was measured by five subscales. Mental focus was correlated with math and science GPA. Mental focus increases over time were negatively correlated with science GPA, which indicated that the initial score differential (between higher and lower science GPA students) was decreased over time. Learning orientation and cognitive integrity were not correlated with GPA. Creative problem solving was correlated with science GPA, but gains over time were not correlated with GPA. Scholarly rigor was correlated with science GPA, but change over time was not correlated with GPA. (284 pages)

The Effect Of 5e Learning Cycle Model On Eleventh Grade Students

Cetin Dindar, Ayla 01 March 2012 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of 5E learning cycle model compared to traditional teacher-centered instruction on eleventh grade students&rsquo / conceptual understanding of acids and bases concepts and student motivation to learn chemistry. The measuring tools were Three-tier Acids-Bases Test (TABT) and Chemistry Motivation Questionnaire (CMQ). There were two groups, which were the experimental and traditional group, consisting of 78 students. Before the implementation, the tools were administered as pre-tests to both groups and the semi-structured pre-interviews were conducted with eight students to determine students&rsquo / prior knowledge about acids-bases and motivation to learn chemistry. During the implementation, 5E learning cycle model was used in the experimental group and the traditional teacher-centered instruction was used in the traditional group throughout eight weeks. After the implementation, the tools were administered as post-tests to both groups and the semi-structured post-interviews were conducted with the same students to determine their post knowledge about acids-bases and motivation to learn chemistry. Afterwards, the data were analyzed and descriptive and inferential statistics were obtained. Based on MANCOVA results, there was a statistical significant mean difference between the groups in favor of experimental group. Similarly, the students from experimental group scored higher motivation and this difference was found to be statistically significant. The results were analyzed in terms of gender as well, and there was found no statistically significant differences between the post-test mean scores of girls and boys for the effect of the implementation on understanding of acids-bases concepts or motivation to learn. The inferential statistics results were also supported with the students interviews.

The subjects of study are fifteen (15) teachers of undergraduate courses in pedagogy and psychology of both sexes, aged between 26 to 55 years old. The theoretical framework was guided in the theories of Maslow, McGregor and Herzberg about motivation. The methodology used in this research was a quantitative and qualitative case study. The tools used for collecting data and assessing followed the adapted version of Schmidt (1990) and Fossile (2005). We could conclude in the course of our research that teaching is motivating when roles are clear, the tasks are challenging, when there are supervisors who support leadership style. Thus, in this group the bureaucratic activities, the relationship between colleagues, the teacher performance to identify occupation are factors that do not cause discouragement, since these are basic conditions for promoting the welfare of the employee, for example, they are promoting quality life at work. But it is difficult to feel job satisfaction due to low salaries and lack of security. We concluded that this difficulty is linked to issues of global economic crisis that changed working relationships. Thus, specific actions for better pay and benefits should be increased so that teachers get greater satisfaction.
