University type as a moderator between cultural mistrust, university comfort, and help-seeking attitudes among African American college students

Jones, Bianca Joanvye 26 July 2011 (has links)
This proposed study will explore how university racial composition impacts the relationship between cultural mistrust, campus comfort, and help-seeking attitudes in a sample of African American college students. A moderated hierarchical regression will be conducted to determine if the cultural and contextual variables predict a significant amount of variance in help-seeking attitudes, and to discover if the variables’ interaction with university type significantly increased the amount of explained variance. The results will demonstrate how one’s comfort in the university environment and degree of trust in the majority group can contribute to seeking psychological services. Counseling and university policy implications will be delineated from the results. Limitations will also be discussed. / text

College Self-Efficacy and Academic Performance in Mexican American Undergraduates

January 2017 (has links)
abstract: Grounded in Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT; Lent, Brown, & Hackett, 1994, 2000), the current study examines environmental and person-cognitive variables as predictors of academic performance among a sample of 194 Mexican American undergraduate students. Specifically, this study used multiple regression analysis to test the associations between college self-efficacy (course self-efficacy and social self-efficacy), proximal contextual influences (campus climate and cultural fit), and gender on the academic performance (self reported grade point average, GPA). Results indicated that course self-efficacy was a significant predictor of academic performance for Mexican American undergraduate students. In addition, social self-efficacy, positive perceptions of the campus climate, and cultural fit were associated with high self-efficacy. This study contributes to our knowledge of college student development in general, and academic attainment among Mexican Americans specifically. Practice and research recommendations are discussed. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Counseling Psychology 2017

The potencial of open spaces in the urban qualification : a design experiment at Cidade Universitária Zeferino Vaz

Garboggini, Flávia Brito 21 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Silvia Aparecida Mikami Gonçalves Pina / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de Engenharia Civil, Arquitetura e Urbanismo / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-21T07:43:57Z (GMT). The present work focuses on open spaces for collective use as articulators of the shape, use and appropriation of the contemporary city. It is the continuity of a research that started in the master thesis, where the concept of the Architecture of the Boundary involved the redesign of the territories that mediate the public and the private realms. The hypothesis of this research is the existence of a potential inherent to the collective use open spaces for the social and environmental qualification of the urban places, in the viewpoint of Urban Design. Its aim is to identify the potentials for socioenvironmental qualification of contemporary city's consolidated parts, through the redesign of its open spaces, to the extent that develops greater sensitivity in the perception of public-private boundary, in conjunction to the application of procedural strategies for participatory design. The research took an exploratory character, developing an action research that began with a case study of instrumental nature. It was selected a university space, as an experimental field: the campus of Universidade Estadual de Campinas, in São Paulo State, Brazil, called Cidade Universitária Zeferino Vaz. The reason for selecting this objet of study is due to its characteristics of an urban fragment that incorporates a range of interests and conflicts rich for the investigation of the proposed subject. Starting from the analysis of the open spaces of that campus, it was held an experiment for the requalification of its central square - Praça do Ciclo Básico, focal point of the campus' urban fabric and social life. The theoretical and conceptual foundation of the work was structured on the state of the art of the theories of Urban Design and the environmental analysis was based on the concepts of the Ecological Model of the Urban Environment. The valuation of open spaces for collective use was incorporated as one priority of the university to improve the quality of life of its community, through the process of participatory design. The action research methodology proved to be suitable for the urban design process, insofar as it enabled the interaction with the community involved. It also brought together the theoretical research dimension and the praxis of urban and architectural production. The results that were reached encourage other critical analysis that may result in design proposals that generate urban scenarios conceptually consistent and that qualify the open spaces of collective use of the urban environment / Doutorado / Arquitetura, Tecnologia e Cidade / Doutora em Arquitetura, Tecnologia e Cidade

Diverse Students' Perceptions of Cultural Congruity and Environment at a University

Thacker, Effie J. 27 August 2007 (has links) (PDF)
The Culturally Responsive Special Education/English as a Second Language (ESL) program was designed to assist students from diverse backgrounds in being academically successful in a large western private university. Utilizing the Cultural Congruity Scale (CCS) and University Environment Scale (UES), this study analyzed the perceptions of 28 students who are ethnically diverse and enrolled in the Culturally Responsive Special Education/ESL Program. The data will be used to evaluate the program's success in addressing the barriers that have historically kept students who are ethnically diverse from succeeding in higher education. Participating students completed CCS and UES surveys questioning their perceptions regarding cultural congruity and how they perceived the university environment. Descriptive data based on responses to survey questions were summarized and examined. Additionally, individual survey items were examined to determine specific areas of student concern. Results from the current sample were compared against the instrument's validating normative sample to find the difference between perceptions of students from a more diverse university setting and this program's ethnically diverse students who are attending a program at a predominately white private institution. Results indicate that the students in the current sample perceive high levels of cultural congruity and positive university environment. Compared with students from a more diverse setting, the current sample perceived similar levels of cultural congruity and significantly greater perceptions of positive university environment.

Does university play significant role in shaping entrepreneurial intention? A cross-country comparative analysis

Trivedi, Rohit 26 February 2016 (has links)
Yes / The purpose of this article is To foster entrepreneurship among students and incubate more start-ups for economic prosperity, universities around the globe are required to play a key role in terms of developing an overall conducive eco-system for student fraternity. Some previous studies have analyzed student entrepreneurship and the effect of entrepreneurship courses. However, the role of university as provider and enabler of entrepreneurial environment and its impact on entrepreneurial intent among student has not studied in a cross-cultural context. Considering this, the present study seeks to examine the critical role played by university in fostering entrepreneurial intention among post-graduate students. For the said purpose, researcher has taken the broader framework suggested by Kraaijenbrink et al. (2010) to understand university environment and Theory of Planned Behavior (Ajzen, 1975) to measure entrepreneurial intention and it’s antecedents among the sample of final year post-graduate management students of India, Malaysia and Singapore. The total sample size is 1097. The data has been analysed with the help of Exploratory Factor analysis, MANOVA and Structural Equation Modeling. Two factors that emerged out of analysis in relation to university environment and support were: a) Targeted cognitive and non-cognitive support and b) General educational support. With the help of Structural Equation Modelling (SEM), an attempt was made to find the relationship between these two factors and entrepreneurial intention. It was found that university environment and support has significantly positive relationship with perceived behavioural control. With the help of MANOVA, it was found that there is statistically significant difference between perceived university environment and support factors among the students of India, Singapore and Malaysia. With this, it was also found that for both the factors, the highest mean score was found among the students of Malaysia, followed by the students of Singapore and India. The study has closely examined role played by University environment and support to foster entrepreneurship among young students. The findings of the study can be used by post-graduate educational institute to design pedagogy, create enabling entrepreneurship support system and work towards becoming an entrepreneurial university.

Étude de l'impact du système universitaire sur l'intention entrepreneuriale : le cas du Vietnam / Studying the impact of university system on the entrepreneurail intent : the case study of Vietnam

Phung, Danh Thang 02 February 2015 (has links)
The entrepreneurial field is a popular subject in the world, but it is a new and attracting research inVietnam where the private economic part has been more appreciated since 1986 (the most important point that marked the renovation of socio-economic system in Vietnam). In the entrepreneurial paradigms, the processing approach that attracts many attentions of recent researchers is followed by this study. With considering the entrepreneurship as the process, this thesis concentrates in the primary of business process (called the creation of enterprise). It studies the influences of university system on the entrepreneurial intention of Vietnamese students, especially the role of university environment in creating the students’ business intention. The most valued aim of this thesis is to describe the factors of university environment and to measure the influences of these factors on entrepreneurial ideas. It is evident that this research is typical combination between management science and information and communication science. This study bases on the entrepreneurial intention paradigm of Davisson (1995) that practiced by Autio etal (1997) and the behavioural theory of Ajzen (1991). The subject is studied by the combination between qualitative and quantitative methods. The two survey questionnaires were conducted with about 1000 completed questionnaires to collect the data for the research. The statistical tests were done such as the independent simple T-test, the analysis of variance ANOVA, the multiple regressions in order to confirm the hypotheses of research. Moreover, the fifteen of deep interview with young entrepreneurs who grow up from university system supplements the deeper understanding about the role of teaching method and university environment in creating entrepreneurial intention. The study is based on six months of fieldwork at nine universities in both the North and the South of Vietnam. The results show that the studying environment and teaching method are two key factors which have high positive influence on entrepreneurial intention of Vietnamese students. They also acknowledge the role of active pedagogic and the close relationship between the literature and the practice by the encouragement to be on probation in enterprises. This research also opens up the new prospect including the role of definition “réseau et communication engageante”.

Pour une didactique de la grammaire contextualisée du français en milieu universitaire chinois : perspectives métalinguistiques et interculturelles / Towards the contextualized didactic of French grammar in a Chinese academic environment : metalinguistic and intercultural perspectives

Xu, Man 30 November 2017 (has links)
This study is in the field of the didactics of languages and cultures. Its purpose is to study the teaching and learning of French grammar in a Chinese academic environment. It focuses on three central questions: What is the contextualisation of the didactics of grammar in a Chinese academic environment? What metalinguistic activities are used in grammar courses for Chinese learners? How do cultural factors, especially intercultural differences, influence the acquisition of grammar by Chinese students? The method of analysis is a multi-methodological approach. We apply the following procedure: A survey in the form of a remote questionnaire to Chinese students, to provide a local context. An analysis of teaching sessions, the courses recorded at the University of International Studies in Xi'an, to demonstrate the metalinguistic activities and educational culture of the public concerned. Carrying out semi-directive interviews with learners, to allow us to examine the effects of metalinguistic activities and intercultural activities among learners. The results confirm that the consideration of metalinguistic and intercultural reflections is crucial, therefore it is important that these perspectives to improve the didactics of grammar in China are not overlooked.
