The social inclusion of learners with visual impairment in a mainstream secondary school in NamibiaHuman, Lizl 03 1900 (has links)
According to Hatlen (2004), most learners with disabilities in an inclusive educational setting are socially isolated. This statement contributed to the research question of this study, how do learners with visual impairment experience the social aspects of their inclusion in a Namibian mainstream secondary school?
The aim of this study was to design a case study to analyse and describe data collected from learners with visual impairment and other participants to determine how they are socially included in a mainstream setting. A qualitative research methodology was used, which included purposive sampling to select participants. The researcher functioned in an interpretive/constructivist paradigm.
It was found that the learners with disabilities and the able-bodied learners do not truly mix, however, the learners with disabilities are content in the mainstream school and they prefer it.
Betekenisvolle verhoudings dra by tot self-aktualisering. Lae sosiale inklusie
Hatlen (2004) is
hoofstroomskool sosiaal gei soleerd is.
interpretatiewe/konstruktivistiese paradigma gewerk. 'n Kwalitatiewe
Educational Studies / M. Ed. (with specialisation in Guidance and Counselling)

Education policy implementation in a society in transition : a multivariate systems approachRameshur, Harrilal. 01 1900 (has links)
At the best of times, education policy implementation is a difficult and
uncertain process. Taking this as a point of departure, the researcher
advanced the hypothesis that education policy implementation in a society
in transition:
is accompanied by a fragmentation of the pre-transition coherence in
interpersonal relations among policy actors;
is affected by a heightening of value conflicts and the emergence of
competing interpretive schemes;
is influenced by the perceived self-interest of policy actors;
is affected by changing power relationships and structural
adjustments; and
reflects a general weakening of interpersonal, cultural, and
structural linkages that had evolved in pre-transition years.
The Indian education system in South Africa was studied as an exemplar
of a system located in a society in transition.
The data collated by means of three research strategies - historical report, questionnaire, and structured interview - gave strong support to
the hypothesis. In addition, they pointed to the significance of
variables such as policy content and policy quality, political interference and pressure, bias and favouritism among senior officials,
religious, sectional, and language loyalties of participants, and loss
of job satisfaction and morale among policy actors.
These findings were discussed against the background of relevant
literature. This concluded in the development_gf a theoretical model to
explain education policy implementation in a society in transition.
Basically, the model suggests that socio-political struggles in the
larger society tend. to be replicated in the micro-contexts of the education system, producing fundamental alterations in the interpersonal,
cultural, and structural aspects of the system, a general weakening of
system linkages, and a progressive de-coupling of system components. All
these changes recursively impact on and are impacted on by policymaking
and policy implementation processes and outcomes. These impacts,
however, tend to occur in a non-standard, nonlinear manner. The
theoretical underpinnings of the model emerge from general systems
theory, modern social systems theory, chaos/ complexity theory, conflict
theory, structuration theory, organisation change theory, and loosely
coupled systems theory.
Finally, the study concludes with general propositions relating to
education policy implementation in a society in transition and a set of
research and management-oriented recommendations. / Educational Leadership and Management / D. Ed. (Educational Management)

Educational change : the case of NewfoundlandVan Schalkwyk, Maria Catharina Dirkschen 11 1900 (has links)
Text in English, abstract in English and Afrikaans / Dramatic changes in Newfoundland's environment and global developments during the
past decade, significantly influenced growing demands for restructuring the education
system of Newfoundland. Responding to these demands, Newfoundland educators
succeeded in creating a single unified non-denominational education system which
became fully operational at the beginning of the 1998/99 school year. This
achievement has been hailed by the majority of Newfoundlanders as a monumental
landmark in the provinces' lengthy experience with denominational education. As well,
it is viewed as pivotal in achieving educational excellence and ensuring that children
receive a relevant education that will prepare them for the demands of the next century.
The former education system (which consisted of four separate denominational school
systems operated jointly by the church and the state) had become too cumbersome and inefficient, thus adversely affecting the quality of education. This thesis looks in particular at the contextual realities and perspectives that
influenced the demands for changing the system. Such factors as the declining school
population, economic conditions, technological developments, as well as legal and
political issues have distinctly changed the Newfoundland society during the past
number of years, hence the necessity to restructure the education system. The thesis
furthermore discusses the proposed government model for restructuring the system and
highlights the proposals for improving education. It also focuses briefly on the minority
rights issue in Canada, as this has bearing on the legal rights of the church to educate in Newfoundland and its current role within the new structure. An evaluation of Newfoundland's educational reform initiatives (which includes the
views of key educators in Newfoundland on these issues), deals with some of the
problem areas which currently exist within the new system. However, the focus centres
mainly on the obvious improvements in such areas as management, organization,
parent involvement, curriculum development, educational achievement and
accountability. The impact of these reforms on the social, educational and political
dimensions of the Newfoundland society will only become evident in time, yet they hold
the promise of having a lasting impact on educational achievement. The remarkable
feature of the whole reform process is, that it was achieved from within.
onderwys in Newfoundland ten diepste raak. Faktore soos dalende geboortegetalle,
Educational Studies / D. Ed. (Comparative Education)

School choice and commuting in Ladybrand, Free State: a socio-economic analysisMnguni, Phindile Samukelisiwe 06 1900 (has links)
This study explored school choice and school commuting in the town of Ladybrand in the Free State Province. A mixed research method (survey and qualitative interviews) was used. Grade 8 parents from all three public secondary schools in Ladybrand were surveyed. Members of the School Governing Bodies (SGB) and School Management Teams (SMT) were also interviewed. The study found that all three schools are dominated by Black African children, although Ladybrand High (a fee-charging, former Model C, whites-only school), had a multiracial learner profile. Most Black African learners in Ladybrand High came from lower to middle-class working homes in the neighbouring township. Lesotho nationals were also enrolled in this school. Most Ladybrand High learners had parents who are married, financially resourced, educated, and working in skilled or professional jobs. In terms of Lereng Secondary and Sehlabeng Secondary School (both no-fee township schools), most learners hail from poorly educated, single-parent homes, where the parents are either working in semi-skilled or unskilled jobs or are unemployed. None were from Lesotho. Their financial status is weak. These parents said they selected the school based on proximity and low cost, whereas quality of education drove enrolment in Ladybrand High. Thus, the schools in the Ladybrand area demonstrate that class segregation has replaced apartheid race segregation. Learners from Ladybrand High commute using a variety of transport modes, while learners in township schools either use a subsidised government bus or walk – in some cases long distances if they live on neighbouring farms. The township schools complained of poor learner discipline and feeling unsafe due to local gang activities, both of which negatively impact on the functioning of the schools. This was not the case with Ladybrand High. While all the schools offer extra lessons, the two township schools hold extensive extra-lesson sessions and matriculation study camps. / Environmental Sciences / M. Sc. (Environmental Management)

Commuting to school in semi-rural KwaZulu-Natal: characteristics, causes and consequencesNala, Nomfundo 02 1900 (has links)
The Umnini Tribal Authority is a poor, semi-rural area in KwaZulu-Natal, governed by a local chief. This study set out to determine school commuting patterns in relation to school choice and socio-economic status (SES) in the area. Mixed methods were used, involving a parental questionnaire survey, interviews, focus groups and a field audit with photographs. Overall, almost all learners enrolled in the seven 'no-fee' state primary (four) and high schools (three) under study were found to be Black African, IsiZulu speakers, and generally ‘extremely poor’ to ‘very poor’. Most households are headed by single mothers who have completed high school but are unemployed. Most households rely on government social grants to some extent. Most fathers were either absent, poorly educated to uneducated, and far less likely to be employed than the mothers. Children living with both parents, especially where the father was tertiary educated, and the mother employed, fell into the ‘less poor’ and ‘better off than most’ categories. In terms of school choice affordability, good teachers, good school management and proximity to home were the main drivers of enrolment. SES seems to have an impact on the amount of money spent on school lunches and school expenses, although there were some concerning exceptions. Primary school learners walked to school, but many parents pay for monthly transport. Some use the government-subsidised bus. High school learners tended to have longer and less safe journeys to school and back than primary school learners. This is especially true for boy learners, who are targets for criminals, drug addicts and, even worse, school bus drivers. Several challenges face all these learners en route to school every day: crime, unsafe and poor road conditions, roadworthy vehicles, long journeys and rough terrain. Primary school learners often get lost or left behind by their transport drivers. Fortunately, their teachers are actively involved in ensuring their safety and well-being – far more so than their parents, who seldom even know the name of the transport driver, let alone whether the vehicle is appropriate, roadworthy or licenced. High school learners were more likely to live in ‘extremely poor’ to ‘very poor’ households, a possible indicator that financially better-off parents are sending their high school children to schools outside of the area. It is recommended that the local tribal authority, the provincial government, the schools, parents and drivers need to work in unison to make the school commute simpler and safer. / Environmental Sciences / M. Analysis of the undergraduate students' learning environment in a medical school in ZambiaEzeala, Christian Chinyere 11 1900 (has links)
This study analysed the learning environment of undergraduate medical and health sciences students of the School of Medicine University of Zambia who were studying at the Ridgeway Campus. Premised on the theory that learner’s perception of the learning
environment determines approach to learning and learning outcome, the study utilized a descriptive, quantitative, and non-experimental design to articulate the issues that characterise the learning environment of the programmes. The aim was to provide
framework based on these, and use it to propose a strategy for improving the learning environment of the School. The Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure (DREEM) questionnaire was administered to 448 participants from year 2 to year 7 classes of medicine, pharmacy, and physiotherapy programmes. Total DREEM,
subscale, and individual items’ scores were analysed statistically and compared by analysis of variance among the programmes. The issues determined formed the framework for strategy development, and strategic options were proposed based on evidence obtained from literature. With a global DREEM score of 119.3 ± 21.24 (59.7 %),
the students perceived their learning environment as “more positive than negative.” One sample binomial test of hypothesis for categorical variables returned a p value <0.05, with a verdict to ‘reject the null hypothesis,’ thereby confirming a more positive than negative
perception. Subscale scores also showed ‘more positive’ perception. There were no significant differences between scores from the different programmes when compared by Games Howell test, P> 0.05, thereby upholding the second hypothesis. Analysis of individual items revealed problems in six items, which were summarised into four strategic ssues: inadequate social support for stressed students, substandard teaching and mentoring, unpleasant accommodation, and inadequate physical facilities. The implications of the findings for theory and practice were discussed and strategic options proposed to address the issues. The study concludes that analysis of the learning environment of medical schools provides more insight for strategic planning and
management. / Health Studies / D.Litt. et Phil. (Health Studies)

Promoting the rehabilitation of juvenile offenders in selected South African correctional schools : a wellness perspectiveMakhurane, Forget 11 1900 (has links)
Text in English, with abstracts and keywords in English, Sesotho and Afrikaans / The purpose of the study was to investigate and explore how rehabilitation and wellness of juvenile offenders in selected South African correctional schools can be promoted. A wellness model that can be used to promote the wellness of juvenile offenders was
proposed based on the findings of the study. The researcher used the wellness, ubuntu and bio-ecological theories as theoretical frameworks to guide the study. These theories helped the researcher to understand how the promotion of wellness among juvenile offenders can facilitate effective rehabilitation and, ultimately, offender reintegration into
society. The interpretive paradigm was employed to understand the experiences and views of juveniles as well as teachers and heads of schools who were directly involved in the rehabilitation of juvenile offenders. The study used the qualitative research method in
which open-ended questionnaires were used to collect data from juveniles and teachers whereas semi-structured interviews were to collect data from heads of schools.
Participants were purposefully selected to ensure relevant data was gathered. Twenty-one juveniles, twelve teachers and seven heads of schools took part in the study.
Participants were drawn from four provinces and seven schools. Data were analysed qualitatively through coding, categorising and developing themes. Themes that developed from data interpretation were used as headings for the findings in each wellness dimension. Themes that developed from the study revealed that schools were
making a great effort to promote the wellness of juvenile offenders. Great strides were made especially in promoting the wellness of juvenile offenders through the involvement of different stakeholders although this was inadequate. Schools were facing challenges
such as lack of resources, shortage of skilled personnel as well as inadequate stakeholder involvement. The research proposed a wellness model that is holistic in nature to help teachers and other stakeholders involved in juvenile offender rehabilitation to promote their social, physical, emotional, spiritual, career and intellectual wellness. / Mohola wago bala e be e le go aga lenaneo leo le ka šomišwago ke barutisi le batho ba bangwe mo thekgong ya bana bao ba lego dikolong tsa kgolego (dihlokatsebe).

Psychology / Ph.
