Lived experiences of black women academic researchers at the University of South Africa

Nkumane, Khabonina Grace 01 1900 (has links)
This study, The lived experiences of black women academic researchers at the University of South Africa, investigated the factors that impacted on the lives of the black women academics at Unisa in the College of Education. It was a phenomenological study wherein the participants shared their lived experiences through in-depth interviews. This was a qualitative study that employed an interpretive paradigm. This permitted the view that reality is multiple layered. It took into account the various viewpoints of the participants as different realities that were narrated in this report by using the verbatim quotations of the participants. The findings revealed that Black women academic lecturers at Unisa faced challenges in the teaching and learning area. They had no ownership of modules that they taught because they were not primary lectures. They experienced racism and alienation from both Black and White academics that have long been at Unisa. White staff questioned their qualifications and, they received no orientation in the teaching of ODL modules. In the research area, challenges concerned the supervision of postgraduate students and article writing for publication. It also arose that they received less support from senior colleagues and from their supervisors in their personal studies. There was general complaint about the 2010 Unisa mentoirship programme but there was commendation of the recent CEDU mentorship programme. The participants felt that Unisa should introduce academic support programmes that would cater for staff over the age of 50 because the current programmes only cater for those below 50 years of age. / Educational Studies / M. Neue Medien: neues Lernen - neues Handeln

Buchholtz, Christiane 27 October 2010 (has links)
In today’s modern information society and knowledge economy new media offer novel possibilities for teaching and learning processes in school. Nevertheless, an effective use of new media in instruction requires changes in its organisation as well as in teaching methods and the role of the teacher. Empirical studies show that many teachers still have to implement this kind of reorientation. This explorative study aims to develop and test a concept for the professional development of teachers, which leads to a sustained change of their teaching. Based on prior research on media in instruction, a theoretical framework is developed that applies problem-based learning to the professional development of teachers of English. Also, didactical deficits in the use of new media in instruction are analyzed with a focus on teachers’ cognition. It shows that the existing teaching routines, represented in the form of lesson scripts, constrain a reorientation of teacher performance. Hence, the professional development focuses on changing these routines by devising a procedure consisting of three steps, which combines the acquisition of new knowledge with practicing it and reflecting the practice. The empirical part of this thesis is based on a pre-postdesign. For all participants of the professional training the patterns of action in class were observed and tested in a third-party assessment. The data was transformed into lesson scripts. Both the analysis at group level, which used quantitative methods, and the analysis on the individual level of the teacher using classifying methods showed that after the training the participants made more use of problem-based teaching and learning. This reorganisation happened on the level of the chosen tasks as well as with regard to the interaction models. All in all, the study showed that the concept of professional training developed for this study is a promising approach to initiate the required reorientation in education with new media.

Novos estudos são necessários, para ampliar o olhar dos profissionais, gestores, equipe, usuários sobre os programas e, verificar as mudanças ocorridas, e a influência/potência da supervisão nestas mudanças / Abstract: Health is a conquered social right, and the fulfillment of this right only occurs with the confrontation of its two main obstacles: financing and management of the health workforce. Brazil deals with the issue of human resources for health through government programs to provide professionals and improve the quality of training. The PROVAB - "Professional Enhancement Program Primary Care" (Professional Improvement Program Primary Care) and (More Medical Program) "More Doctors Program" are the two most recent programs in this field. This article aims to reflect and analyze, from the experience of the subject-researcher as a Supervisor on the role of practical supervision in these programs on their potential and limits as a pedagogical tool. This is a study of qualitative and exploratory nature, based on reports of subject-researcher experience, during the period from 2013 to 2015. The author develops a descriptive study of the programs and reports selected supervisory experiences, and finally performs the construction of analysis categories, organized into three groups: supervision in the context, the role of supervision and supervision tools. The research finds its limits in the contemporaneity to the facts, making it difficult to collect different data and sources provided only by the federal government, also in from the specific methodological choice, referred the findings to the implicated author's look. With this work, it seems that the practice in supervision on the PROVAB "More Doctors Program" has great educational power, and that a better definition of the role of the supervisor as well as the incorporation of new tools, such as Balint-Paideia¿s Groups and the "enhanced supervision" are some of the proposals for the advancement of these policies. More studies are needed to broaden the perspectives of professionals, managers, team members about the programs and verify the changes occurred, and the influence / power of the supervision in these changes / Mestrado / Política, Planejamento e Gestão em Saúde / Mestre em Saude Coletiva

Chemické vzdělávání ve Skotsku - výuka chemie na středních školách a vzdělávání učitelů chemie / Chemical Education in Scotland - teaching of chemistry at high schools and chemistry teachers education

Laburdová, Jiřina January 2015 (has links)
The Czech Republic and Scotland rank similarly in international pupil's performance tests. However, education systems of these countries differ greatly. This research has three main focus areas: 1) general aspects of Scottish education including teaching methods, school and real life connections in teaching, and school leaver's destinations 2) studying Chemistry and teaching at university 3) Chemistry in the senior phase of secondary education and the change of topics and exam paper brought in with the new Curriculum for Excellence. Comparative analysis of syllabi, exam papers, government publications and OECD reports was used and personal experience from an exchange study programme at a Scottish university and a work placement at a secondary school in England were utilized. The Higher exam paper was translated and Czech secondary students sat the test Furthermore, teacher trainees and Chemistry teachers were asked to evaluate the test. Results show that Czech students are taught different things and are accustomed to different ways of being tested, ones that are more focused on knowledge and less on critical thinking. Chemistry education in Scotland is more focused on school and real life connections and newest scientific discoveries. Therefore, Chemistry support notes for the senior phase were analyzed...
