The role of public service broadcasting in South African education : Phalaphala FM as a case study

Netshitomboni, Rabelani Lusani. 06 1900 (has links)
Dissertation / This study investigates the role of radio in South African education, with Phalaphala FM as a case study. The aim was to investigate the extent to which Phalaphala FM's programmes include educational material and the extent to which the respondents listen to Phalaphala FM to satisfy their educational needs. Phalaphala FM as a regional radio station predominantly serves rural listeners, as they often do not have access to alternative forms of media. The theoretical point of departure is the uses and gratifications with its emphasis on the active audience concept. Content analysis of Phalaphala FM' s programme schedule was conducted to determine the amount of educational material. Focus group interviews and survey research were used to determine the respondents' media usage patterns. The results indicate that entertainment programmes are given more time on Phalaphala FM and that the respondents prefer entertainment programmes, to informational and educational programmes. / Educational Studies / M.A. (Communication)

The benefits of GED graduation : a study of Indiana GED graduates

Stiffler, David C. January 1994 (has links)
The purposes of this study were to ascertain and categorize the benefits of GED graduation as reported by recent Indiana GED graduates, and to produce a report on these benefits for local adult educators to use in their ongoing counseling and teaching of current and future Indiana adult learners who are preparing to take the GED tests. An additional purpose was to provide demographic data on the population being studied to local, state, and national systems which can benefit from having research data on what types of individuals tend to use TV to prepare for GED tests.Data collection involved the administration of a sixty-five item questionnaire developed for the study, utilizing questionnaire items from three previous studies of GED benefits conducted in New Jersey, Wisconsin, and Iowa. The questionnaire was mailed to 1,172 GED recipients who received their credentials during 1990-91 school year through the GED ON TV Program administered by the LEARN AT HOME Division of the Muncie Community Schools Adult Education Department. Responses were received from 294 respondents to the initial and follow-up mailings, which accounted for an adjusted response rate of 30.3%. The average age of the respondents was 44.6 years. The respondents were 81.6% female and 91.5% Caucasian-American.Analysis of the data was performed utilizing simple descriptive statistics, including frequency distributions and means, to determine demographic characteristics and benefits perceived by the population. Benefits were empirically reduced by factor analysis, utilizing oblique rotation, into smaller groups of factors of benefit. The findings indicated that there were significant benefits, both tangible and intangible, to be attained by successfully passing the GED Test. The tangible benefits were further education, self-improvement, occupational advancement, and GED participation of others. The intangible benefits were empowerment, improved self-image, higher aspirations, and personal satisfaction. Although the findings of this study confirmed many of the findings of previous studies of GED graduates in other geographical areas of the United States, three types of benefits were newly identified: self-improvement, empowerment, and personal satisfaction. / Department of Educational Leadership

Use of the radio in educational programmes for development

Mkhabela, Thandiwe Lizzie 23 April 2014 (has links)
M.Ed (Media Science) / This dissertation is intended to serve the needs of any individual, agency or organisation that wishes to become involved in a development programme designed to uplift the level of destitution or deprivation of a particular group of people. This study focuses on the needs of the South African rural Black population. To date, many people and organisations have been addressing the problem of poverty, but because of the vastness of this problem their efforts can be compared to the proverbial drop in an ocean. Most rural people still live in abject poverty. They are not just relatively poor, but they are living on the rugged edge of sheer survival and their numbers are growing rapidly (Leonard and Marshall, 1982:1).

[pt] A CONSTRUÇÃO DE CONTEÚDO PARA PROGRAMAÇÃO EDUCATIVA EM TV: DESAFIOS EM COMUNICAÇÃO E EDUCAÇÃO / [en] BUILDING CONTENT FOR EDUCATIONAL TV PROGRAMS: COMMUNICATION AND EDUCATION CHALLENGES

FLAVIA LOBO DE CASTRO ANTUNES 09 November 2015 (has links)
[en] This dissertation brings questions which are faced by communication and education professionals who work with content production for educational TV. This is a case study that has a qualitative approach. It was developed from May to July of 2014 with ten producers who work at MultiRio. The focus of this analysis is to perceive how these professionals comprehend educational content and also to understand how this perception influences the production of these programs. Educational TV has its own characteristics such as entertainment and information. However, it has its peculiarities. The first goal of this kind of station is educating and achieving viewership. This research was developed within the studies of Mario Kaplún on Pedagogy of communication. This author brought the concept of informal education assuming that this type of TV plays a role in promoting human development. MultiRio is a city government company which is connected to the Educational Secretary of the city. The company goals are mainly to articulate society and education as well as promoting continued formation for students and teachers from public schools. Since its creation, the company has produced and aired more than 4.200 programs both on open and paid TV. This study found out that there is a conflict between the two fields which showed a tension between learning and entertaining. It suggests that this conflict may have been originated in the perception about the role of the school and the role of teaching in the society and through TV.

“An English which is not connected to Great Britain, the USA or any other geographical region.” : How is English presented in the Swedish educational television series Pick a colour?

Fairless-Clarkson, Victoria January 2017 (has links)
English is used worldwide as a native, second and foreign language and as a language of international communication. The uses and status of English in Sweden have been discussed in terms of its influence and ubiquity, with its presence in daily life leading some to consider English could be better described as a second, rather than foreign, language in the country. This study analyses how English is presented in the Swedish educational television series Pick a colour and considers how this can be related to the status of English as a global language and specifically the use of English in Sweden. This paper uses an approach drawing on nexus analysis, together with content analysis, to trace the key language ideologies surrounding English presented in Pick a colour and its surrounding texts, and to locate them within the context of the existing discourses in place. Analysis reveals that the series and related documents make attempts to move away from traditional native speaker British English and American English models of the language, and towards a “Global English” not linked to any specific geographical region and with a focus on communicative competence. However, as British English and American English and native-speaker models of the language are not directly challenged in the documents, and are given the greatest prominence in the series, it seems moving away from the status quo is still difficult in practice. The Swedish settings shown in the series, and emphases on the use of English in pupils’ daily lives allude to English being approached in a way more similar to a second, rather than foreign language in Sweden.
