Inset towards educational transformation with reference to primary schools in the Northern ProvinceRavhudzulo, Anniekie Nndowiseni 05 1900 (has links)
Like so many aspects of South African society, teacher education is undergoing
change. The researcher studied existing school-based in-service education and
training (SBINSET) programmes in the Northern Province and to improve the
programmes, proposes Continuous Self-Renewal School-Based INSET (CSR
SB INSET).
Based on the extensive literature survey, strategies that would improve effective
educational transformation are identified. Different concepts of INSET are
explained. Components of teacher education are examined as are those factors
that influence educational transformation. Advantages and limitations are
identified and guidance on how to overcome these are suggested.
The aim of this study was to examine INSET towards educational transformation
with reference to primary schools in the Northern Province in order to introduce
and assess a CSR SBINSET. The study examines the existing SBINSET
programmes which are run in the Northern Province. The importance of teachers'
continued professional growth is emphasised throughout this study. The
researcher views systematic in-service training programmes for teachers as an
educational necessity for the continuing professional growth of primary school
teachers.
An empirical survey has been undertaken to ascertain the effectiveness of CSR
SBINSET and the type of delivery strategy that may be implemented.The research
considers particular aspects of classroom practice addressed in the programme.
The research was guided by the following questions:
+ Which methods do teachers use in their subject teaching?
+ What are their approaches to learners and learning?
+ How do teachers reflect on their teaching?
+ What strategies do teachers use?
This research aims to improve existing SBINSET programmes run in the Northern
Province inter alia by observing practising teachers. CSR SBINSET attempts to
improve the competencies teachers, lecturers and District Officials, through such
means as the presentation of centre-based, school-based and cluster-based
workshops. Although the educational authorities should take initiative to provide
educational transformation, the following share responsibility in this vital aspect
of education:
+ those in the Department of Education who are responsible for planning;
+ superintendents of education within districts and regions;
+ training institutions such as universities, technikons, colleges and private
agencies.
The importance of and necessity for, continuous professional development of

This qualitative research sought to explore the factors contributing to the
motivation of educators and to determine what role school managers (principals and their
management teams) play in the motivation of educators.
By means of an extensive literature search, the term motivation was iluminated and the phenomenon
of motivation was explored through different motivational theories..
An empirical inquiry through semi-structured interviews with educators and school managers were
conducted in the Eastern Cape to determine the factors contributing to the motivation of
educators..
The findings in this research showed that educators are motivated or demotivated by a variety of
factors. It also showed that school managers have an important role to play in the motivation of

Multicultural education is only one of the major changes, which have occurred since the
inception of the new democracy in South Africa. However, this inevitable change has
resulted in many challenges for both educators and educational institutions.
A literature study was done to discuss and clarity concepts of multicultural education,
culture, race, ethnicity, bias and anti-bias. The perspectives, principles and history of
multicultural education in the United States of America, Britain and South Africa were also
investigated.
An exploratory study, using a qualitative research design, was done to investigate
educators' viewpoints on multicultural education in schools. The results of the investigation
indicate that there is a lack of tolerance in schools and that educators require training and
intervention strategies to help them cope with the changes in a multicultural education
system in South Africa.
Recommendations regarding training and policy implementation were discussed and

South Africa, a country in transition, is characterised by drastic policy shifts in the social,
economic and political arenas. These policy shifts are also directed towards educational reform.
The South African Schools Act of 1996 is the first step towards educational change. Other
changes focus on the curriculum, new appraisal procedures for educators, and the establishment
of the South African Council for Educators. All of the above constitute a new working
paradigm for school principals.
This study sought to determine the influence of this changing school environment on school
principals. It looked at how principals perceive the change and examines the impact of change
on their management role.
A literature study was made of the restructuring process in the USA and in England and Wales.
The transformation of the South African education system was also examined.
A qualitative investigation was pursued with secondary school principals. Data gathering was
done through participant-observation, questionnaires and in-depth interviews. Data was
analysed, discussed and later synthesised.
The major findings with respect to the SA Schools Act are:

Principals believe the ban on corporal punishment has weakened their authority.

The principles of Total Quality Management (TQM) have been used
in the business, commercial and industrial sectors to improve
both product and service. In a limited number of schools
worldwide, there have been attempts to adapt TQM theory and
practice to the educational management of institutions.
In this thesis there has been an attempt to adapt the TQM
philosophy to the field of educational practice. Quality tools
and techniques used in TQM organisations have been studied to
ascertain their applicability in schools. During the course of
the study, the researcher discerned the need to give TQM a
distinct identity within the domain of educational management.
In the management of schools, there are philosophies and
practices which are different from those encountered in noneducational
settings. The concept Total Quality Education (TQE)
was used to acknowledge this reality.
Action research was done over a three-year period at a South African co-educational public primary school. During the four
research cycles of looking, thinking and acting, TQE principles
were implemented in the school. Stakeholders such as parents,
learners and teachers identified areas for improvement of the
quality of education. Areas identified included the curriculum,
physical resources, extramural activities, staff development,
learning and financial management of the school. Quality tools
and techniques were applied by all stakeholders to effect the
desired improvements. In the fourth and last cycle of the
research a questionnaire was given to a sample of the parent
community. Progress made in the improvement of the quality of
education provided was noted and areas to be improved further
were identified.
The researcher submits that TQE can be meaningfully applied in South African schools. The various stakeholders can make
contributions to the betterment of schools. Through the
application of the principles of the TQE philosophy, it is

The problems concerning the future management of state-aided
(Model C) schools fall into two main categories, namely problems
intrinsic to the Model C schools and the problem of giving
substance to the stated vision of the ANC. Model C schools were
seen as a South African model of school self-management.
A study of the literature relating to school self-management in
general, and how it is practised in various countries, was made
and the management of state-aided (Model C) schools was analyzed.
A impirical investigation was conducted to ascertain the
perceptions of various role-players in school management about
their duties and responsibilities in this regard.
A model for the self-management of state-aided schools, based on
the Caldwell and Spinks' s model, and conforming to various
criteria, is proposed. The proposed model is, in the opinion of
the researcher, applicable not only to State-aided schools, but
to all schools in South Africa as it allows individual schools
to accept as much or as little self-management as is consistent
with the capacity of their communities to provide effective and
efficient service. It also allows schools to accept increases
in self-management as their communities gain in management skills

This study entails a critical investigation into the issue and trends that shaped Black
perspectives on education in South Africa in the period between 1652 and 1993.
A theoretical-philosophical exposition is presented to establish the fundamental
characteristics of education and therefore characteristics valid for every human being
under any circumstances at any time. These characteristics were used to eventually
appraise the issues and trends underlying the shaping of Black perspectives on education
in South Africa.
This study has revealed that the shaping of Black perspectives on education in South Africa
goes hand in hand with the growing realization among Blacks that education is not merely
a political issue but also deeply imbedded in the interconnectedness and/or differences
between social realities such as the church, the school itself, teachers' associations, the news

The transformation of the higher education institutions in the post-apartheid era : the South African Research Chairs initiative as an indicatorNkhumeleni, Cebisa 10 1900 (has links)
The study investigated whether the South African Research Chairs and the research programmes of the Department of Science and Technology and the National Research Foundation Programme (DST/NRF programmes), have made an effective contribution towards the acceleration of transformation in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in South Africa. The study argues that the implementation of the Higher Education (HE) policies by HEIs and the South African Research Chairs are seriously undermined by legacies of colonialism and apartheid. It is further contended that unless more funds are made available to black students to study full-time, the pillars of democracy of social justice, redress and equality remain meaningless ideological slogans.
Guided by the insights provided by literature review on CDA, the study focuses more on the top-down relations of dominance (policy) that fuels continuing racial discrimination in higher education institutions, which the 2008 Final Report of the Ministerial Higher Education Committee isolated for criticism. The study posits that the thematic structural unifier, which links all the pieces of the multiplicity of the competing ideas and voices and threads through the whole study, is the endless probing and unravelling of the cultural and historical factors that continue to undermine the higher education transformation agenda.
The findings of this study suggest that the policy implementation of the HE transformation agenda continues to be constrained by mismatch between policy objectives and implementation results. The findings also indicate that although the research-driven performance of South African Research Chairs has progressively improved each year and student support and research outputs increased between the 2008/09 and 2009/10 financial years, the direct impact of the SARChI programme can only be determined when performance is measured against the South African Research Chair Holders‟ baseline performance. The data also suggest that despite access to educational services at HEIs improving, the existence of various forms of discriminatory

practices, are still employed, a major challenge attributed to the “great man” leadership styles adopted by many university‟s vice chancellors and councils. Teaching and learning policies in South African schools in the new democratic dispensation : a critical discourse analysisMogashoa, Tebogo Isaac 06 1900 (has links)
The democratic era in South Africa has led to the introduction of a wide-ranging series of teaching and learning policies aimed at school reform. The study aimed at establishing how these policies are implemented by educators in selected schools. Qualitative and quantitative methods were used to gather information from educators, members of the School Management Teams and learners through in-depth individual and focus group interviews as the main data collection methods. Critical discourse analysis was used to examine participants‟ spoken words and the content of relevant documents such as lesson plans in detail. Comparisons were drawn and similarities identified through the coding, categorisation and condensation of data. The researcher interpreted the displayed data. A discussion of the main themes was presented and supported by quotations by participants. Findings indicate that there have been only few changes in terms of how educators teach; some educators conceded that they had not changed the way they teach since the introduction of new curriculum and assessment policies. The role played by learning outcomes in teachers‟ lesson planning was uneven. Members of School Management Teams demonstrated diverse views on teaching and learning policies. Learners who are taught in their home language encounter few difficulties in learning; this is not the case with learners who are taught through medium of a second language and thus lack the necessary language proficiency necessary for academic achievement. A shift from teacher-centred to learner-centred approaches to teaching is still required: that is, a shift from teaching to learning to enhance thinking and reflection which accommodates and draws on learners‟ prior knowledge and experiences. Class sizes should be reduced to enable effective educator and learner interaction. Educators‟ interest, tolerance, innovativeness and competency in the subject matter will help sustain learners‟ interest in the learning activities. Policy makers should explore professional development from viewpoint of the participating educators in order to identify the most effective strategies to support and change educators‟ classroom practice where necessary. / Curriculum and Instructional Studies / D. Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2004. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation explores the notion of (higher) education transformation in relation to
logically necessary conditions which guide the concept. These logically necessary
conditions (constitutive meanings) include: equity and redress, critical inquiry,
communicative praxis, and citizenship. I explore how instances of these logically
necessary conditions manifest in institutional plans at the universities of Cape Town,
Stellenbosch, and the Western Cape. My contention is that these institutional plans seem
to be tilted towards the exclusive implementation of performance indicator measures
which might undermine deep educational transformation. In turn, deep educational
transformation requires that logically necessary conditions be framed according to an
African philosophy of educational transformation.
