Development of Transitional Settling Regimen Parameters to Characterize and Optimize Solids-liquid Separation Performance

Mancell-Egala, Abdul Salim 20 September 2016 (has links)
Novel settling characteristic metrics were developed based on the fundamental mechanisms of coagulation, flocculation, and settling. The settling metrics determined parameters that are essential in monitoring and optimizing the activated sludge process without the need for expensive or specialized equipment. Current settling characteristic measurements that don't require specialized instruments such as sludge volume index (SVI) or initial settling velocity (ISV), have no fundamental basis in solid-liquid separation and only indicate whether settling is good or bad without providing information as to limitations present in a sludge matrix. Furthermore, the emergence of aerobic granulation as a potential pathway to mitigate solid-separation issues further stresses the need for new settling characteristic metrics to enable integration of the new technology with the current infrastructure. The granule or intrinsic aggregate fraction in different types was of sludge was quantified by simulating different surface overflow rates (SOR). The technique named Intrinsic Settling Classes (ISC) was able to separate granules and floc by simulating high SOR values due to the lack of a flocculation time needed for granules. The method had to be performed in a discrete settling environment to characterize a range of flocculation behavior and was able to classify the granular portion of five different types of sludge. ISC was proven to accurately (±2%) determine the granule fraction and discrete particle distribution. The major significance of the test is its ability to show if a system is producing particles that will eventually grow to become granules. This methodology proved to be very valuable in obtaining information as to the granular fraction of sludge and the granular production of a system. Flocculent settling (stokesian) was found to be predominant within ideally operating clarifiers, and the shift to 'slower' hindered settling (non-stokesian) causes both failure and poor effluent quality. Therefore, a new metric for settling characteristics was developed and classified as Limit of Stokesian Settling (LOSS). The technique consisted of determining the total suspended solids (TSS) concentration at which mixed liquor settling characteristics transition from stokesian to non–stokesian settling. An image analytical technique was developed with the aid of MATLAB to identify this transition. The MATLAB tool analyzed RGB images from video, and identified the presence of an interface by a dramatic shift in the Red indices. LOSS data for Secondary activated-sludge systems were analyzed for a period of 60 days at the Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant. LOSS numbers collected experimentally were validated with the Takacs et al. (1991) settling model. When compared to flux curves with small changes in the sludge concentration matrix, LOSS was found to be faster at characterizing the hindered settling velocity and was less erratic. Simple batch experiments based on the critical settling velocity (CSV) selection were used as the basis for the development of two novel parameters: threshold of flocculation/flocculation limitation (TOF/a), and floc strength. TOF quantified the minimum solids concentration needed to form large flocs and was directly linked to collision efficiency. In hybrid systems, an exponential fitting on a CSV matrix was proposed to quantify the collision efficiency of flocs (a). Shear studies were conducted to quantify floc strength. The methods were applied to a wide spectrum of sludge types to show the broad applicability and sensitivity of the novel methods. Three different activated sludge systems from the Blue Plains AWWTP were monitored for a 1 year period to explore the relationship between effluent suspended solids (ESS) and activated sludge settling and flocculation behavior. Novel metrics based on the transitional solids concentration (TOF, and LOSS) were also collected weekly. A pilot clarifier and settling column were run and filmed to determine floc morphological properties. SVI was found to lose sensitivity (r < 0.20) when characterizing ISV above a hindered settling rate of 3 m h-1. ISV and LOSS had a strong correlation (r = 0.71), but ISV was subject to change, depending on the solids concentration. Two sludge matrix limitations influencing ESS were characterized by transition concentrations; pinpoint floc formation, and loose floc formation. Pinpoint flocs had TOF values above 400 mg TSS L-1; loose floc formation sludge had TOF and LOSS values below 400 mg TSS L-1 and 900 mg TSS L-1, respectively. TOF was found to correlate with the particle size distribution while LOSS correlated to the settling velocity distribution. The use of both TOF and LOSS is a quick and effective way to characterize limitations affecting ESS. / Ph. D. / New parameters to determine how particles separate from water were developed. The new parameters didn’t require expensive or specialized instruments. Current parameters that don’t rely on specialized instruments give little information on how particles separate from water. The new parameters provide information on particle size, particle settling speed, and particle stickiness. The significance of this research is the ability for anyone in the field to gain a better understanding of the settling process they are monitoring using these parameters. The first parameter named Intrinsic Settling Classes allows one to determine the particle size distribution within a sludge mixture based on how fast the particles settle. The parameter requires dilution of the sample to inhibit the particles from sticking together. Bigger particles will settle faster, due to more mass assuming density does not change significantly. The second parameter named Limit of Stokesian Settling determines a particle’s settling speed. The parameter involved finding the maximum particles that could occupy a particular space before the particle-particle interaction start to hinder settling. Particles with a faster settling distribution can have more particles occupying a certain space before hindering one another. The third parameter named Threshold of Flocculation identified a particle’s stickiness. Stickier particles attach together in a shorter time resulting in large clumps of particles that settle faster. This parameter involved determining the minimum amount of particles needed to form large clumps of particles at a predetermined time. Stickier particles require less particles and time to form large clumps of particles.

Recovery of the Fish Population of a Municipal Wastewater Dominated, North Texas Creek After a Major Chlorine Disturbance

Maschmann, Gerald F. 08 1900 (has links)
This study evaluated the effects of a major chlorine disturbance on fish communities in Pecan creek by the City of Denton's Pecan Creek Water Reclamation Plant. Fish communities in Pecan Creek were sampled using a depletion methodology during February, April, July, and November, 1999. February and April sampling events showed that the fish communities were severely impacted by the chlorine. Sampling during July and November showed fish communities recovered in Pecan Creek. The first-twenty minutes of shocking and seining data were analyzed to mirror an equal effort methodology. This methodology was compared to the depletion methodology to see if the equal effort methodology could adequately monitor the recovery of Pecan Creek after the chlorine disturbance. It was determined that the equal effort methodology was capable of monitoring the recovery of Pecan Creek, but could not accurately represent the fisheries community as well as the depletion method. These data using the twenty-minute study were compared to a previous study. Results of this study were similar to those found in a previous study, although fish communities were more severely impacted and took longer to recover.

Quality indices of the final effluents of two sub-urban-based wastewater treatment plants in Amathole District Municipality in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa

Gcilitshana, Onele January 2014 (has links)
Worldwide, water reuse is promoted as an alternative for water scarcity, however, wastewater effluents have been reported as possible contaminants to surface water. The failure of some wastewater treatment processes to completely remove organic matter and some pathogenic microorganisms allows them to initiate infections. This manifests more in communities where surface water is used directly for drinking. To assess water quality, bacteria alone cannot be used as it may be absent in virus-contaminated water. This study was carried out to assess the quality of two wastewater treatment plant effluents from the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. Physicochemical parameters and microbiological parameters like faecal coliforms, adenovirus, rotavirus, hepatitis A virus, norovirus and enterovirus were evaluated over a projected period of one year. Physicochemical parameters were measured on site using multiparameters, faecal coliforms enumerated using culture-based methods and viruses are detected using both conventional and real-time PCR. Physicochemical parameters like electrical conductivity, turbidity, free chlorine and phosphates were incompliant with the standards set by the Department of Water affairs for effluents to be discharged. Faecal coliform counts were nil for one plant (WWTP-R) where they correlated inversely (P < 0.01) with the high free chlorine. For WWTP-K, faecal coliforms were detected in 27% of samples in the range of 9.9 × 101 to 6.4× 104 CFU/100ml. From the five viruses assessed, three viruses were detected with Rotavirus being the most abundant (0-2034176 genome copies/L) followed by Adenovirus (0–275 genome copies/L) then Hepatitis A virus (0–71 genome copies/L) in the WWTP-K while none of the viruses was detected in WWTP-R. Species B, species C and Adv41 serotypes were detected from the May 2013 and June 2013 samples where almost all parameters were incompliant in the plant. The detection of these viruses in supposedly treated effluents is suggestive of these being the sources of contamination to surface water and therefore renders surface waters unsafe for direct use and to aquatic life. Although real-time PCR is more sensitive and reliable in detection of viruses, use of cell-culture techniques in this study would have been more efficient in confirming the infectivity of the viruses detected, hence the recommendation of these techniques in future projects of this nature.

An Evaluation of Fish and Macroinvertebrate Response to Effluent Dechlorination in Pecan Creek

Wise, Patricia D. (Patricia Diane) 05 1900 (has links)
This study evaluated the effects of chlorinated effluent discharged from the City of Denton, Texas' wastewater treatment plant on Pecan Creek's fish and macroinvertebrate assemblages, and their recovery upon dechlorination. A baseline of ecological conditions was established while chlorine was present in the effluent (June 1993- October 1993), and was evaluated again after dechlorination with sulfur dioxide (October 1993-August 1994). In situ Asiatic clam and fathead minnow ambient toxicity tests, and fish and macroinvertebrate collections were used to establish this baseline for comparison to post-dechlorination results.

Evaluation of a Constructed Wetland to Reduce Toxicity from Diazinon at the Pecan Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant, Denton, TX

Baerenklau, Amy L. (Amy Lyn) 05 1900 (has links)
The City of Denton Pecan Creek Wastewater Treatment Facility has periodically failed effluent toxicity testing. A Toxicity Identification Evaluation has determined that Diazinon in the effluent is contributing to the observed toxicity. Chlorpyrifos is also implicated as a factor. The City of Denton constructed a half acre experimental wetland to remove Diazinon related toxicity. Results from spiking and microcosm experiments indicate that the wetland can reduce the Diazinon.

Comparative evaluation of the impacts of two wastewater treatment works on the water quality of Roodeplaat Dam in Tshwane, Gauteng

Zulu, Mpumelelo Blessing 06 1900 (has links)
Freshwater resources and supplies in South Africa are experiencing severe stress from rising population growth, drought and high urbanization. The stress factors have also exerted pressure on wastewater treatment works leading to the release of partially treated effluent. The study assessed and compared the impact of the two wastewater treatment works effluent discharged into the Roodeplaat Dam. Selected physical parameters (pH, conductivity), chemical parameters (total oxidised nitrogen, phosphate, chemical oxygen demand, chloride, sulphate, sodium) and microbiological parameter (Escherichia coli) were evaluated and compared with South African standards. Secondary data (from January 2012 to December 2017) was used to identify parameters that were above or below regulatory standards. The t-test (p < 0.05) was used to compare changes between 2012 and 2018 over the same months. The results indicated that aquatic ecosystem quality has not improved, degradation continues as well as a lack of intervention from authorities. The leading parameters in causing stress to Roodeplaat water quality in descending order were Escherichia coli (E. coli), Phosphate (PO43-), Total Oxidized Nitrogen (TON), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Chlorophyll a (Chl a), Ammonia (NH3), Electrical Conductivity (EC) and Sodium (Na). One of the main reasons why poor effluent was released is limited financial investment to upgrade the treatment facilities. This research provided highlights on the need to enforce extra measures to guarantee compliance of treated effluent quality to the existing guidelines. Moreover it highlights the need for concerned department’s authorities to invest in water by allocating enough budget to address the challenge of wastewater treatment works upgrades. / Environmental Sciences / M. USE OF ALGAE, CYANOBACTERIA, AND INDIGENOUS BACTERIA FOR THE SUSTAINABLE TREATMENT OF AQUACULTURE WASTEWATER

Yolanys Nadir Aranda Vega (18433941) 27 April 2024 (has links)

Aquaculture is a controlled aquatic farming sector and one of the most important human food sources. Fish farming is one of the predominant, fast-growing sectors that supply seafood products worldwide. Along with its benefits, aquaculture practices can discharge large quantities of nutrients into the environment through non-treated or poorly treated wastewater. This study aims to understand the nutrient composition of fish wastewater and the use of indigenous bacteria, cyanobacteria, and microalgae as an alternative biological treatment method. Wastewater samples from a local fish farming facility were collected and treated using six different species of cyanobacteria and microalgae include Chroococcus minutus, Porphyridium cruentum, Chlorella vulgaris, Microcystis aeruginosa, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, and Fischerella muscicola. All the samples were incubated for 21 days, and the following parameters were measured weekly: Chemical oxygen demand (COD), phosphate, total dissolved nitrogen, and dissolved inorganic nitrogen. In addition, dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), bioavailable DON (ABDON), and biodegradable DON (BDON) were calculated from the mass-balance equations. Colorimetric and digestive methods were used for the parameter measurements. The results showed that C. reinhardtii reduced the soluble COD concentration by 74.6%, DON by 94.3%, and phosphorous by more than 99%. Moreover, M. aeruginosa, and C. minutus significantly reduced inorganic nitrogen species (>99%). This alternative fish wastewater treatment method was explored to gain insight into fish wastewater nutrient composition and to create a sustainable alternative to conventional fish wastewater treatment methods.

Ökonomische und ökologische Bewertung der Auswirkungen des demografischen Wandels auf die Siedlungsentwässerung

Bergheim, Kirtan, Dreuse, Alexander, Reif, Jakob 17 April 2013 (has links) (PDF)

The biological sulphate removal process

Greben, Harma 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MSc)--University of Stellenbosch, 2001. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: South Africa is one of the world's major coal producers, resulting in the second highest foreign exchange earner for South Africa. However, the mining industry contributes negatively to (ground) water pollution, due to the formation of acid mine drainage (AMD). AMD originates from the bacterial oxidation (Thiobacillus ferrooxidans) of pyrite (FeS) and contains high levels of sulphate and metals. Sulphate rich waters can be treated applying the biological sulphate removal technology. This study concentrated on biologically removing sulphate from synthetic feed- and mine water, using the single-stage completely-mixed reactor system. The advantage of using this reactor system is that except for removing sulphate from about 2000 to less than 200 mg/t', it can also partly biologically remove the formed sulphides. It was established that both ethanol and sugar can be used, as the carbon and energy source, however ethanol is more cost effective than sugar. Ethanol dosage and Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT) studies were undertaken to investigate at what concentration, the highest sulphate and sulphide removal rates were achieved. It was found that the highest sulphate reduction rates were obtained when using 1mf ethanol/f feed and that the removal rates were dependent on the HRT: the lower the HRT, the higher the sulphate reduction rate. The highest sulphide oxidation rate was achieved at the HRT of 6 h. It was, furthermore shown that the single stage completely-mixed reactor system could successfully be used to remove sulphate from Schoongezicht mine effluent, not only removing the sulphate, but also most of the metals, thereby increasing the mine effluent pH from 2.5 to 7. The conclusion of this study was that a completely-mixed reactor system, as described in this thesis, can successfully be applied to treating acid mine drainage using ethanol (1 m.e etanol/f feed water) as the carbon and energy source at a hydraulic retention time as low as 4 hours. This technology has great potential for pilot- and full-scale treatment of sulphate rich effluents such as acid mine drainage.
