Youth In Revolt. How Suburban Youth of the 1950s Rejected the Contradictions of an Affluent Society in Favor of Apocalyptic Zombies and Chicken Runs

Goostree, Michele Leigh 01 August 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this study is two-fold. First, I will examine the influences shaping the choices of teenagers living in an affluent society during the early days of the Cold War, specifically 1950 - 1955. I will discuss the contradictions about society, the family unit, and gender roles teenagers attempted to sort out as they moved through adolescence. Secondly, I will focus on two forms of mass media, specifically comic books and movies of the 1950s. Media has always had the power to change and shape the opinion of the youth culture who consumed it. I will discuss the lengths parents, educators, law enforcement, and government officials went to in order to blame the messages media conveyed for the behavior of this youth in revolt.

Mathematics Teachers’ integration of technology for pedagogical use in a less affluent High School in the Western Cape

Buzuzi, Addlight Ngonidzashe January 2020 (has links)
Thesis (MEd (Education))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2020 / This study investigates factors that affect the integration of Educational Technology (ET) by mathematics teachers for pedagogy in less affluent high schools in the Western Cape. ET has permeated the education system in the 21st century. It is now a norm for ET to be used in classrooms for educational purposes. Despite the prevalence of a variety of ETs, not all mathematics teachers are fully equipped to take advantage of the immense benefits posited by ET. This study reveals that a lot of mathematics teachers in public schools in the Western Cape still face critical challenges in their attempt to fully integrate ET for pedagogy.  The study employed a qualitative research design to explore the factors affecting the integration and use of ET for curriculum delivery by mathematics teachers in less affluent high schools in the Western Cape Province. The framework underpinning this study is the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework which guided the researcher in the analysis of the research findings. The researcher used two data collection instruments, namely, semi structured interviews and observations. Face to face semi-structured interviews were conducted with 9 participants and themes were used for analysing data. Participants were fully furnished with information regarding their rights when participating in the study. They were informed that they could withdraw at any given stage during the interview process. Despite the permeance of technology in the education sphere, the study’s findings show that teachers in less affluent schools in the Western Cape still experience mitigating factors that militates against effective integration of technology in classrooms for pedagogy. For effective integration of ET to take place, several factors needed to be critically addressed. They included the lack of training, limited access to ET, lack of technical support, lack of time and the theft of ET resources.

Two experiments were conducted over 96 hours of exposure to a gradient of increasing concentrations, we assessed the acute effects of contamination on eggs and larvae in stage 25 larvae free natantia and without the presence of external gills. There was no mortality and no apparent anomalies in the short term for both streams for both stages of egg, as for the larvae. To assess the effects of chronic exposure, larvae were used in stage 25 of Gosn er, where they were exposed to contaminated water until they reach metamorphosis in an experiment using a one-factor control and two treatment using 100% of the concentration of water in their streams. The nitrogen compounds [ammonium (NH ), nitrite (NO ) and nitrate (NO )] produced in the course of the 4+ 2- 3 experiments were always in a higher concentration for the affluent of Mindu in relation to the Quarenta, while the concentrations o f pH , dissolved oxygen and temperature have remained always close between treatments and also taking all individuals received the same feed in two streams of water treatments, a significant difference in the length of larvae, size of metamorphosis and growth rate compared to control. The period of the larvae in Stream Mindu was lower, with the size and growth rate higher than in the control. In the Stream Quarenta, the situation is reversed, there was a period of larvae increased with the size at metamorphosis and growth rate lower than in control. The effects produced by chronic exposure to contaminated water streams are indications that the continuous contamination of streams and / or urban streams can upset the population dynamics of amphibians, carrying, other ecological changes. These results demonstrate possible consequences of contamination by urban sewage on larval amphibian communities of streams and pools of forest land.

Andersson, Ulrika, Al- Zaibari, Lina January 2013 (has links)

Social Identity’s Role in Illicit Drug Consumption Among Swedish Youth in Affluent Areas : A Qualitative Study

Köhler, Erik, Einhorn, Kim January 2021 (has links)
Background and aim: The consumption of illicit drugs remains stable among youths in Sweden, yet an increase in consumption has been observed in affluent areas. This study aims to explore the reasons for illicit drug use in these areas and if this could be further understood using Social Identity Theory. Methods: Twenty participants from four high schools in an affluent municipality participated in semi-structured in-depth interviews regarding substance use. The interviews were coded using thematic analysis and six themes emerged.  Results: Social influence was the prominent influence for illicit drug use. Furthermore, this use was normalized and availability was high. The influence of family norms and outspoken negative effects of drugs caused a decrease in consumption. Conclusion: These results are in accordance with previous research claiming social influence on illicit drug use, and further confirms this in an affluent area. Social Identity Theory (i.e. how informants categorize, identify and compare themselves with their social group) had an impact on consumption.

Bistro Girls

Blakeslee, Vanessa 01 January 2005 (has links)
Bistro Girls is an interconnected collection of short stories focusing on characters whose lives intertwine in the affluent Floridian town of Bellamy Park. In "Bistro Girls of Bellamy Park," a senior at a privileged college struggles to confront an old friend who has slipped into addiction. In "Bobby Blues," two women's stifling situations with live-in boyfriends give way to a small hope as Valerie casts aside her illusions and leaves to find a new apartment, temporarily freeing herself from the pattern of relying on a man. In these stories people wrestle with flawed concepts of personal identity that create outward limitations in their interactions with those they care about most. In "Disconnect," an eccentric millionaire struggles with spirituality and a romance spoiled by his inability to find satisfaction. In "The Coffee Shop," the emotionally removed Don leaves Valerie in the inevitable position to find contentment through self-reliance. Through trial and error, the obstacles of insecurity and disillusionment can at times be overcome. In "Scout's Honor," a young woman marries under the spell of fateful disillusionment, with tragic results. An annulment is the catalyst for her maturity, yet the road before her promises to be a long, painful one. As the characters come closer to acceptance of the imperfections and possibilities in themselves and the world around them, there is almost always some hope, no matter how difficult the means to get there.
