LiquidText: supporting active reading through flexible document representationsTashman, Craig Stuart 03 April 2012 (has links)
Knowledge workers are frequently called upon to perform deep, critical reading involving a heightened level of interaction with the reading media and other tools. This process, known as active reading, entails highlighting, commenting upon, and flipping through a text, in addition to other actions. While paper is traditionally seen as the ideal medium for active reading, computers have recently become comparable to paper through replicating the latter’s affordances. But even paper is not a panacea; it offers an inflexible document representation that supports some things well, such as embellishment, but supports others very poorly, like comparison and large scale annotation. In response to this, I developed a prototype system, called LiquidText, to embody a flexible, high degree-of-freedom visual representation that seeks to alleviate some of the problems in paper and paper-like representations. To provide efficient control of this representation, LiquidText runs on a multi-finger touch and gesture based platform. To guide the development of this system, I conducted a formative study of current active reading practice. I investigated knowledge workers’ active reading habits, perceptions, and the problems they face with current reading media. I also inquired into what they would like in a future active reading environment. I used these results in conjunction with multiple design iterations and formative system evaluations to refine LiquidText for use in a summative study. The summative study assessed, through a controlled, laboratory evaluation, LiquidText’s impact on 1) the subjective experience of active reading, 2) the process of active reading, and 3) the outputs resulting from active reading. Generally, the study found a strong participant preference for LiquidText, and a focus on the creation of a summary of the original document as part of the reading process. On average, reading outputs were not significantly better or worse with LiquidText, but some conditions were observed that may help identify the subset of people for whom LiquidText will result in an improvement.

Synthèse et caractérisation d'encres électrophorétiques pour la réalisation de papier électronique couleurCharbonnier, Antoine 12 December 2012 (has links)
Cette thèse s’intéresse principalement à la réalisation de nouvelles encres électrophorétiques pour les applications de type papier électronique couleur. Une méthode simple et peu contraignante basée sur la polymérisation en dispersion a été développée, permettant de réaliser de manière contrôlée et en milieu peu polaire des particules de polymère chargeables positivement ou négativement. Puis, grâce à ce nouvel outil, des particules électrophorétiques hybrides ont été synthétisées à partir de pigments inorganiques et caractérisées sous champ électrique. Enfin une nouvelle solution pour aller vers des dispositifs couleur a été proposée et la fabrication d’un démonstrateur test a été abordée. / The effective sharing of information is a key parameter in our actual society. Electronic paper based on the controlled motion of electrophoretic particles appears thus promising since it combines the advantages of the usual paper (flexibility, reflective display) and the capacity to refresh information on the same support like the more common LCD or OLED technologies. Electrophoretic inks are composed of coloured charged particles which migrate under an electrical field between two electrodes. Depending of the position of the particles on the front plane, the colour on the screen can be tuned. The design of electrophoretic particles based on pigment or dyed polymer and their integration in electronic devices were successfully achieved during the last decade but are still limited to a two colour-electrophoretic system. Up to date the majority of these particles were synthesized in aqueous media and the electrophoretic mobility was achieved by a ionic stabilizer or by a polyelectrolyte surfactant. Moreover the final electrophoretic particles incorporated in the electronic devices have to be dispersed in an organic media (paraffin oil) in order to achieve the desired stability of the display and thus leads to a large variety of problems during the phase exchange process.In this work our goals were to rationalize and improve the ink synthesis as well as to design electrophoretic inks with the full colour panel in order to realize the next generation of electrophoretic displays. We performed the particle synthesis by using an organic dispersion technique in aliphatic hydrocarbon solvents leading to chargeable electrophoretic particles with a good size control over a large range (from 75nm to 20µm) and a good stability. In order to obtain the full color panel, the encapsulation of several inorganic pigments was achieved by using the same technique and the electrophoretic behaviour of the resulting inks was characterized in a cell specially designed for electrophoretic measurements in organic media.

Au cours de ces travaux de thèse, la synthèse et le comportement électrophorétiquede particules hybrides dispersées en présence d'un nouveau contrôleur de charge, latridodécylamine, en milieu électrophorétique (non-polaire), ont été étudiés pour des applicationsde type papier électronique. Dans le but de contrôler et comprendre les interactions présentesdans ce système, la tridodécylamine a tout d'abord été examinée seule dans le milieu souhaité.Il a été observé que ce tensioactif, solubilisé dans un milieu type huile paraffine, a uneconcentration micellaire critique approximative de 250 mM et apporte des charges dans lemilieu. Ensuite, la synthèse par polymérisation en dispersion ou par voie sol gel a permisd'obtenir des particules inorganiques, polymères ou hybrides type framboise, stables en milieunon-polaire. Leur comportement électrophorétique en présence du nouveau contrôleur decharge a été élucidé. En outre, il a été montré que des interactions acido-basiques avec lesgroupements hydroxyles des pigments inorganiques et le tensioactif donnent des particuleshybrides chargées négativement. Celles-ci ont par la suite été intégrées dans une encreélectrophorétique et testées dans un dispositif prototype innovant, le contrôle del'électrophorèse étant géré via un polymère ferroélectrique. / In this work, the synthesis and the electrophoretic behavior of hybrid particlesdispersed in apolar media, in the presence of a new charge control agent, the tridodecylamine,have been investigated for electronic paper applications. In order to control and to understandinteractions present in the system, the tridodecyamine was studied in the apolar medium. It hasbeen observed that this surfactant, solubilized in a non-polar medium, has a critical micelleconcentration of approximately 250mM and creates charges in the medium. Then, the synthesisby polymerisation in dispersion or by using a sol-gel process gave rise to the creation ofinorganic, polymeric or raspberry type hybrid particles, stable in non-polar media. Theirelectrophoretic behavior in the presence of tridodecylamine was elucidated. Acid-baseinteractions between hydroxyl groups from inorganic material surfaces and surfactant led to thecreation of negatively charged hybrid particles. These particles were integrated into anelectrophoretic ink and tested into an innovative electrophoretic device where theelectrophoresis is monitored via a ferroelectric polymer.

This thesis presents the implementation of some of the basic concepts of digital logic design in a fun and creative way with the help of paper electronics. This involves circuit building on paper using conductive tape or conductive ink and circuit components as electronics craft materials. Paper electronics toolkit called circuit sticker microcontroller which is deployed by a company named Chibitronics and AT89C51 microcontroller were used for the computational functioning of the circuits built on paper. This can be used to teach the fundamentals of digital logic design to the students in their early stage of studies in an attractive way and can help them them gain a better understanding. This thesis can also be helpful in grabbing the attention of high school students and motivate them towards choosing the engineering discipline for their higher studies.

The PVI Industrial Co., Ltd, a supplier of the module of electronic paper which is one of the most critical element, accounts for 90% of the market of electronic paper and is the largest supplier in the world of the electronic paper. Therefore, PVI is applied as the main object in this study to explore its supply chain, marketing strategy, business performance, etc., in order to learn about the market, the application of innovation and future development of e-book reader.

由於目前各大保險公司多已具有線上投保服務的功能,本論文即以實務上常見的線上投保為出發點,探討保險業電子商務相關的法律問題,以B2C為核心,先以二章探討電子電子簽章法對保險電子商務的影響,分別就電子化意思表示之成立與生效要件及電子文件在法律上的效力做探討,針對現行民法與電子簽章法第七條關於電子化意思表示之生效時點做立法上的介紹,包含立法草案、立法理由之比較,及就國際上各國立法例做比較法上的探討。另外電子化意思表示的瑕疵即電子錯誤的法律問題,國外立法有相當詳盡的規定,我國法上則無相關的規範,本章並就此問題加以探討並提出立法上可行性之建議。第四章則針對現行電子簽章法第四條至第六條關於電子文件法律效力的規範做立法沿革、立法理由之比較與研究,並介紹國際上相關的立法例,對電子簽章法第四條至第六條規範不足的部分提出修正建議。最後整理並介紹電子簽章法第四條至第六條在保險電子商務運用上的影響
其次為保險電子商務下相關特別法的規範,本文以消費者保護法以及為主題,分別討論網路上的使用者約款與電子商務契約是否適用特種買賣的法律問題,針對現行消費者保護法及相關特別法與保險電子商務有關的部分提出那些應予適用那些應予排除的研究結論,如:消保法關於定型化契約之規範應適用於保險公司網站上的使用者約款、會員約款、定型化保單條款上;企業有那些應盡的告知義務、線上保險契約國外有那些立法例允許適用特種買賣那些立法例排除我國法上可否做如此的設計…等等
最後為本論文的結論,並附上現行實務草擬的保險業網路交易管理辦法、保險業電子商務業者自律公約範本、保險業服務契約範本草案及IAIS有關保險網際網路營業行為監理的核心原則做出對照,期能對保險電子商務相關的法律問題有所理論上或實務上的助益。 / E-Commerce is the most potential selling way. of the insurance. Some researches have also pointed that there are advantages and disadvantages when insurance company use E-Commerce, so E-Commerce is in special way showing in the insurance practice. Insurance selling can not totally be replaced by E-Commerce, therefore,there is special space to study in the related legal problems on the E-Commerce of the insurance .
This paper will discuss the legal problems of the E-Commerce of the insurance, especially focus on B2C. Electronic Signature Act has passed on 2001.11.10, and it is the first law about the E-Commerce in Taiwan Chapters2 of this paper will discuss the problems of what the Electronic Signature Act influence the E-Commerce. First, the Electronic Signature Act regulates that the valid time of the electronic representation, Chapter3 will discuss the related preparation, the reasons of this regulation, compare the foreign regulations about this issue, and comment it. Then, there is no regulation about electronic error in Taiwan law, we will discuss the related problems. Chapter4 and Chapter5 discuss the legal questions about electronic paper and consumer protection of the e-commerce.
