Primary Productivity and Nutrient Relationships in Garza-Little Elm Reservoir

Smith, Jerry Allen 05 1900 (has links)
A large, multi-basin reservoir (Garza-Little Elm Reservoir) in north central Texas was studied to determine the relative effects of various parameters on primary productivity. The basins were impounded several years apart, thus allowing the influence of age on water chemistry and biota to be considered. Another principal influence on water quality was secondary sewage effluent that entered one basin from a nearby source.

Mitt i prick! : A quantitative study that aims to exam what students at Karlstad University finds compelling and not compelling in two different job adverts

Mugula, Malik, Gradin, Maya January 2022 (has links)

A new scheme for training ReLU-based multi-layer feedforward neural networks / Ett nytt system för att träna ReLU-baserade och framkopplade neurala nätverk med flera lager

Wang, Hao January 2017 (has links)
A new scheme for training Rectified Linear Unit (ReLU) based feedforward neural networks is examined in this thesis. The project starts with the row-by-row updating strategy designed for Single-hidden Layer Feedforward neural Networks (SLFNs). This strategy exploits the properties held by ReLUs and optimizes each row in the input weight matrix individually, under the common optimization scheme. Then the Direct Updating Strategy (DUS), which has two different versions: Vector-Based Method (VBM) and Matrix-Based Method (MBM), is proposed to optimize the input weight matrix as a whole. Finally DUS is extended to Multi-hidden Layer Feedforward neural Networks (MLFNs). Since the extension, for general ReLU-based MLFNs, faces an initialization dilemma, a special structure MLFN is presented. Verification experiments are conducted on six benchmark multi-class classification datasets. The results confirm that MBM algorithm for SLFNs improves the performance of neural networks, compared to its competitor, regularized extreme learning machine. For most datasets involved, MLFNs with the proposed special structure perform better when adding extra hidden layers.

Impacts of season, single prescribed burn, and winged elm (Ulmus alata) encroachment on fuel dynamics in an upland oak stand in northern Mississippi

Woodard, Shawn C. 06 August 2021 (has links)
In north Mississippi, I evaluated fuel loads in the late dormant season and after leaf fall in unburned areas and after a dormant season burn. Fuel loads beneath winged elm (Ulmus alata) were assessed to determine if this shade-tolerant species impacts fine fuel loads in the area immediately near its bole. I found leaf litter fuel loads are higher after leaf fall suggesting that burns conducted closer to leaf fall may have increased burn intensity. Burning reduced leaf litter fuels and exposed mineral soil which returned to pre-burn levels following leaf fall. Declines in duff layer fuels were not evident until after leaf fall. Leaf litter fuels underneath winged elms had higher mass and percentage of winged elm litter beneath them compared to areas away from them. These results will help determine appropriate time for restoring prescribed fire and the implications of encroachment by non-oak species into upland oak forests.

"Have You Ever Had a Broken Heart?"

Moore, Katherine 12 1900 (has links)
Have You Ever Had Broken Heart? is a collection of essays that interrogate memory, loss, and grief through the intersection of personal narrative, films, the actress Frances Farmer, and woman saints and mystics from the twelfth through seventeenth centuries who were punished for daring to speak to G-d. The essays engage with autotheory and include a myriad of forms, such as segmented, one sentence, and hybrid works. The films discussed range from the philosophical, such as Ingmar Bergman's Winter Light (1963), to Graeme Clifford's biopic, Frances (1982), to catechize the grief of the persona losing her mother and sister to a hit and run car wreck in June 2022. The persona traverses the realm of the mystics and saints, including Marguerite Porete, Sor Juana Inez De La Cruz, and Joan of Arc, examining their respective quests to experience the unseen and often silent divine, while questioning her longing for G-d, and simultaneously believing G-d cannot exist. Yet, within this confusion, she finds herself immersed in memories which carry the presence of her mother's love.

Submerged wood inhabiting macoinvertebrates of the Elm Fork of the Trinity River, Texas: Assemblage analyses, comparisons to the benthic fauna, and a study of Cyrnellus fraternus (Trichoptera: Polycentropodidae)

Johnson, Zane B. 08 1900 (has links)
Taxonomic composition and spatio-temporal variability of macroinvertebrates inhabiting snags were examined from an 8-km segment of the Elm Fork of the Trinity River. Seventy-seven macroinvertebrate taxa were collected from submerged wood during the study. Assemblages were highly variable spatially and temporally, especially among seasons. An ordination of species and environment did not find snag taxa to have striking correlations with many of the selected environmental variables, although there were some trends in flow-mediated species distributions. There were significant seasonal differences in the abundances of some taxa, particularly among the Chironomidae (Diptera). The Tribe Orthocladiini was numerically abundant during the winter, while the Tribes Chironomini and Tanytarsini dominated the summer and autumn. Additionally, this study included a secondary production and microdistribution analysis of a population of the caddisfly Cyrnellus fraternus. Distributions of C. fraternus were restricted to snags, the most stable substratum for retreat building and for resisting periodic high waters. Larvae were not found in the soft sand and mud benthic habitats near submerged wood. The insects were multivoltine with a minimum of three generations per year. Pupae were collected July through September and adults emerged from May through October. The population overwintered as larvae. Estimated annual production was 1,015.4 mg/m2/yr. Mean standing stock biomass was 61.24 mg/m2, the cohort production/biomass ratio was 4.59, and the annual production/biomass rate was 16.58/yr for this population. Standing stock biomass ranged from 1.6 to 349.1 mg/m2 during the year and was significantly higher in autumn and summer than winter. Larvae were more abundant in the lower portions of the study area where flow was reduced for much of the year, than in the upper reaches, characterized by higher current velocities. C. fraternus larvae were found in their highest numbers on snags with dense deposits of silt and sand.
