Functional and structural neuroimaging of facial emotion recognition in alexithymia

Ihme, Klas 06 May 2015 (has links) (PDF)
Research in the last decades has shown that individuals with high degrees in the personality trait of alexithymia not only have difficulties in identifying and recognizing own feelings, but also show deficits in reading emotions from facial expressions of other people. Therefore, the current dissertation investigates the neural correlates of recognizing emotional facial expressions as a function of alexithymia. Initially, a theoretical introduction is given and existing findings from behavioral as well as structural and functional neuroimaging research are presented. Open questions are identified and addressed in one structural and two functional magnetic resonance imaging studies that were compiled into three original research articles. Study 1 examined the gray matter profile of high and low alexithymic individuals in selected brain regions relevant for processing emotional faces. In Study 2, functional neuroimaging was used to investigate the neural correlates of high alexithymic individuals\' difficulties in labeling briefly presented (≤ 100 ms) facial expressions of emotion. Study 3 investigated neural activations as a function of alexithymia during the labeling of emotional facial expressions when these are presented with little temporal constraints (≥ 1 s). The results of these studies are summarized and integrated with the existing literature. Finally, open issues are discussed and ideas for further research are outlined.

Ontogênse do sorriso no contexto da interação mãe-bebê / Smile's ontogeny in the mother-infant interaction context

Deise Maria Leal Fernandes Mendes 12 March 2008 (has links)
This doctoral dissertation had the following purposes: (I) to propose an approach to the study of smile that integrates a historical, socio-cultural and evolutionary, and biological dimmension; (II) to carry out two empirical studies, the first one longitudinal, reaching from the third week to the sixth lifes month of two babies, and the second one, a transversal studie, at the first, the second and the fifth months of life, with the proposition of: (II.1) to investigate any eventual standard of smile exibition in terms of frequency, duration and morfological characteristics, and any possible transformation in this standard during the first six months of life; (II.2) to analyze the smile standards observed in the presence of mothers affective behaviors during the first six months of life; and (II.3) to verify if the babies can answer contingently, with smiles, to the mothers affectives behaviors, and also if there are specific standards for each kind of smile. Two mothers and their babies participated in the longitudinal study and were videotaped at home. Twenty mothers and their babies participated, for each of the three groups of different ages in the transversal study, and were videotaped at home. The observation categories in these two studies are codified in two parts. The first part had mutually exclusive and exhaustive behaviors (babys smiles). The Cohens Kappa and the agreement indexes indicated good reliability inter observers. Among the evidences, it was verified a incrising curve trajetorial tendency for the babiess smiles in the period studied, F(1,22) = 6,77, p<0,05 for the first baby, and F(1,23) = 7,85, p<0,05 for the second one, both of them in the longitudinal study context. The two babies have revealed a particular tendency to frequentely display one or two kinds of smile. Babies also answered contingently with smiles to mothers affective behaviors in the two studies. In the longitudinal resourch, correlations between the more frequent kinds of the babies smiles and his mothers smiles were verified (r=0,77, p<0,0017 for one baby, and r=0,62, p<0,0017 for the other). In the transversal research, correlations between the simple smile and the mothers smile were verified (r=0,70, p<0,0007). Differents kinds of smiles have been exibited from the babies, in the both studies, longitudinal and transversal, as contigencial anwers to the mothers observed behaviors. This and others results sinalize to an association between the babies smile and his mothers affective behaviors. The relevance of investigating babiessmile contrats with the lack of Brazilian studies on this theme. This dissertation intended to contributeas an effort to supply this gap.

Social status in humans : differentiating the cues to dominance and prestige in men and women

Mileva, Viktoria January 2016 (has links)
Human social status has long been of interest to evolutionary and social psychologists. The question of who gets to control resources and be a leader has garnered a lot of attention from these and other fields, and this thesis examines evidence for there being two different mechanisms of achieving high status, and their correlates. The mechanisms are 1) Dominance: being aggressive, manipulative and forcing others to follow you, and 2) Prestige: possessing qualities which make others freely follow you. Chapter 1 is an introductory chapter in which I explain selection pressures, group formation, and the need for social hierarchies; I then describe the two proposed methods of attaining social status and how facial characteristics can give clues as to an individual’s social status. In Chapter 2, my first experimental chapter, I examined how faces created to appear either high in dominance or high in prestige were judged with respect to those traits as well as personality characteristics. Taking this further, in Chapter 3, I looked at how natural variation in real faces would reflect differences in other- and self-perceived ratings of dominance and prestige. Chapter 4 served to examine whether, given a set of words related to social status, I would find differences in what words were placed into dominant or prestige categories. Findings within these chapters are consistent with dominance and prestige being separable methods of attaining high status, from differences in facial appearance (Chapter 2 and 3), to personality characteristics (Chapter 2), to word usage (Chapter 4). Once I had established that these were two distinct routes to achieving high status, I chose to focus on dominance in Chapter 5 and explored the conceptual relationships between dominance and facial expressions. I found that manipulating perceptions of dominance affected how intense expressions of anger, sadness, and fear were perceived (Chapter 5). As there has been a paucity of research in the area of women’s social status, in Chapter 6, I went on to explore what effects cosmetics use in women would have on their perceived social status. I found differences in how men and women perceived women wearing cosmetics, which again points to a distinction between dominance and prestige. My thesis then presents a broad view of the two different mechanisms for attaining high status. Using new methods not otherwise used in exploring dominance and prestige I was able to explore correlates and indicators, as well as perceptions of both strategies. These findings will allow us to determine who might be capable of attaining social status, which of the two methods they might use, as well as what implicit associations we hold about each. They will also open doors for future research into the two strategies, and even help interpret previous research, as many previous studies simply relate to high status and do not distinguish between dominance and prestige.

A influência do cão na expressividade emocional de crianças com transtorno do espectro do autismo / The influence of the dog in emotional expression of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Roma, Renata Paula da Silva 08 April 2016 (has links)
Although the Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) is considered a potential therapy to promote development in people with ASD, it´s still unknown which specific characteristics of dogs lead to a successful therapy. This quantitative analysis aims to measure the impact of lateral and frontal approaches from dogs and humans into joy and rejection emotional expressions displayed by children with ASD. Through video´s analysis, frequencies and durations of lateral and frontal approaches from humans and dogs to children were quantified in order to compare potential differences between both and analyze the effect of the chosen approach in emotional expression display. Participated in this project 11 children, 8 males and 3 females, from 5 to 11 years old. They were divided in two groups. A psychologist, a conductor and a border collie attended six of them. The second group was composed by 5 children attended by the same psychologist, a conductor and a golden retriever. Specifics evaluation scales were applied to confirm children´s diagnosis. An institution that works in the AAT area had previously evaluated and trained both dogs. Parents signed a free-consent term before the beginning of the study. Five minutes within 8 sessions were analyzed: 6 sessions with dog´s presence, the session before and the one subsequent this block of sessions. In order to analyze potential temperamental differences between dogs, C-barq (Canine Behavioral Assessment & Research Questionnaire) was applied to check the dogs temperament. The C-barq results showed differences related to the categories search of attention and energy level of the dogs. However, the test did not indicate statistical differences on the measurement of variables linked to this study. Dogs were better than humans to get joy expressions independently on the chosen approach. A significant statistical difference was observed in the comparison of how long dogs and humans spent in approaches until they got an emotional expression from children. The results suggest that dogs showed shorter latency than humans on all analyzed emotional expressions: joy (2= 7.312, p=0.007), rejection (2= 11.277, p-0.001) and neutral (2=9.097, p=0.043) expressions. Moreover, the results suggest no link between lateral or frontal approach and specific expression of emotions in children with ASD in the context of AAT. Expressions of joy were more frequent after lateral than frontal dog´s approach, however no statistically significant difference was found. No approach preference was found in humans. Thus, results suggest that latency to emotional behavior from children depends more on who approaches than on position lateral or frontal when the approach happens

Expressions faciales émotionnelles et Prise de décisions coopératives / Emotional facial expressions and Cooperative decision making

Orvoen, Hadrien 04 January 2017 (has links)
For few decades, rational choice theories failed to properly account for cooperative behaviors. This was illustrated by social dilemmas, games where a self-motivated individual will be tempted to exploit others' cooperative behavior, harming them for his own personal profit. I will first detail how cooperation may rise as a reasonable --- if not rational --- behavior, provided that we consider social interactions in a more realistic context that rational choice theories initially did. From anthropology to neurobiology, cooperation is understood as an efficient adaptation to this natural environment rather than a quirky, self-defeating behavior. Because pertinent information is often lacking or overwhelming, too complex or ambiguous to deal with, it is essential to communicate, to share, and to trust others. Emotions, and their expression, are a cornerstone of humans' natural and effortless navigation in their social environment. Smiles for instance are universally known as a signal of satisfaction, approbation and cooperation. Like other emotional expressions, they are automatically and preferentially treated. They elicit trust and cooperative behaviors in observers, and are ubiquitous in successful collaborative interactions. Beside that however, few is known about how others' expressions are integrated into decision making. That was the focus of the experimental study I relate in this manuscript. More specifically, I investigated how decisions in a trust-based social dilemma are influenced by smiles which are either displayed along a cooperative or defective behavior (``congruently'' and ``incongruently'', resp.). I carried out two experiments where participants played an investment game with different computerized virtual partners playing the role of trustees. Virtual trustees, which were personalised with a facial avatar, could either take and keep participants investment, or reciprocate it with interests. Moreover, they also displayed facial reactions, that were either congruent or incongruent with their computerized ``decision'' to reciprocate or not. Even if the two experiments presented some methodological differences, they were coherent in that they both showed that participants were altered in remembering a virtual trustee's behavior if the latter expressed incongruent emotions. This was observed from participants' investments in game, and from their post-experimental explicit reports. If many improvements to my experimental approach remain to be done, I think it already completes the existing literature with original results. Many interesting perspectives are left open, which appeal for a deeper investigation of face-to-face decision making. I think it constitutes a theoretical and practical necessity, for which researchers will be required to unify the wide knowledge of the major cognitive functions which was gathered over the last decades.
