Reflections on the well-being levels of professionals in rural and semi-rural areas : faith theoretical perspectiveModise, Leepo 06 1900 (has links)
This study evolved from an involvement with professional people in a rural and semi-rural environment thereby taking into account the role which the Employee Assistance Programmes (EAP) plays in their professional context of work. Two underlying factors motivate the study. Firstly, that professional needs and capacities of faith, belief and spirituality are not been catered for in the EAPs. Secondly, that an African-Christian wholesome sense making approach provides more satisfactory answers to the lack of faith, belief and spirituality in the EAPs than the modern versions of the classic dualist and tripartite anthropological schemes of soul and body or soul, spirit and body. Furthermore, a wholesome sense making approach supports and tackles people’s wellness and well-being levels more satisfactorily than the classic dualist and tripartite views. An outline of an EAP in which faith leaders and consultants and their programmes are integrated and which contributes to the enhancing of well-being levels and performance management of professional people is described.
The main focus of the study revolves around wholesome foursome experiential patterns in which alternating emphases of faith experience are acted out in the sense of ‘I believe God, I believe myself, I believe my human neighbours and I believe the physical natural environment’. This four side pattern of faith experience functions as an important theoretical assumption in the study. A second theoretical assumption has to do with the foursome processual framework of God’s grand acts of creation, reconciliation (redemption= cross and resurrection of Jesus), renewal (ongoing renewal of everything) and consummation and fulfilment towards the end (aim and goal) in which we as people and the physical natural environment are intrinsically and continuously involved. A third theoretical assumption revolves around the foursome experiential professional performance pattern of ‘I perform for God, I perform for myself, I perform for my human neighbours and I perform for the physical natural environment’. The social needs of farm workers in the Koup : suggesttions for employee assitance programmes (EAPS) from a social work perspectiveBotes, Jacolise 11 1900 (has links)
Farm workers are viewed as a neglected segment in the South African society. This qualitative research study focused on exploring and describing the social needs of farm workers in the Central Koup from the perspectives of samples comprising of farm workers and farm owners and/or managers. The aim was to contribute in finding solutions to address the identified needs through employee assistance programmes (EAPs) as one of the areas that an occupational social worker focuses on. The qualitative data was collected through focus group discussions and semi-structured interviews, and the findings were verified with literature. Tesch’s framework for data analysis (in Creswell, 2003) was employed, and data verification was conducted through Guba’s model (in Krefting, 1991:214-222). The findings indicated that the social needs of farm workers could be addressed through typical EAP-related focus areas such as working- and interpersonal relationships, substance abuse, spiritual well-being, recreation, financial management, conflict management, child care and parenting skills, trauma counselling, and practical assistance regarding transport, housing and accessibility of resources. This research endeavour resulted in recommendations regarding the use of EAPs to address the social needs of farm workers. / M. Soc. Sc.

It also shows an incongruence between marketing and employee orientation and training initiatives and reveals that programme evaluation efforts are insufficient and could be significantly improved.

Text in Afrikaans / The purpose of the research was to determine the extent to which health issues, and particularly work stress, are managed at a welfare organization. The group investigated consisted of 49 registered social workers employed at nine welfare organizations in the Nelson Mandela Metropole. The research process was directed by quantitative research, the research information being obtained through a literature study and structured questionnaire.
A number of health issues were identified in the workplace. Based on the empirical investigation it was concluded that health management does not enjoy a high priority at welfare organisations. The health issues that have the most impact on the respondents' work ability are work stress and burnout. It is recommended that organisations compile a holistic policy for health management. There is a need for implementation of employee assistance and wellness programmes for health management. Such programmes promote the productivity and general wellbeing of social workers. / Die doel van die navorsingstudie was om te bepaal tot watter mate
gesondheidskwessies, in die besonder werkstres, by 'n welsynsorganisasie
bestuur word. Die ondersoekgroep het bestaan uit 49 geregistreerde
maatskaplike werkers werksaam by nege welsynsorganisasies in die Nelson
Mandela Metropool. Die navorsingsproses is deur kwantitatiewe navorsing gerig
en die navorsingsinligting is met behulp van 'n literatuurstudie en
gestruktureerde vraelys bekom.
Daar word tans 'n aantal gesondheidskwessies in die werkplek geidentifiseer. Na
aanleiding van die empiriese ondersoek is daar tot die gevolgtrekking gekom dat
gesondheidbestuur nie 'n hoe prioriteit geniet by welsynsorgnisasies nie. Die
gesondheidskwessies wat die mees beduidende impak op die respondente se
werkvermoe het, is werkstres en uitbranding. Daar word aanbeveel dat

Thesis (M Social Work)--Stellenbosch University, 2001. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: An explorative study of the Social Worker's role and responsibilities to develop the
leadership potential of grassrootslevel employees in industrial organisations was
undertaken. This subject was chosen with requirements in mind, which are necessary for
the transformation process to be presented to industrial organisations for the
implementation of affirmative action. A comprehensive literature study revealed that
social workers can make a positive and essential contribution to organisations, either as
an industrial social worker, or an affirmative action specialist, or as a member of the
human resources development team. A discussion of the necessary leadership qualities,
the implementation of affirmative action, and useful resources that may be used for
development programs, is included. The literature study was followed by an empirical
study.
The empirical study was made with the assistance of questionnaires. The questionnaires
were used to collect data on the perceived role of social work in the industrial
organisation. Organisations that do utilise social work services were approached for
permission and co-operation to complete the questionnaires. Seventeen respondents from
fifteen organisations were selected in a random process, for inclusion in the study.
The research indicated that social workers have different roles to play in vanous
organisations, and with the values, knowledge base and competencies that are brought to
the organisation, have a responsibility to ensure that affirmative action and labour
equality is brought to fruition. With regard to the implementation of leadership
development programs in industrial organisations, it was noted that grassroots level
employees were seldom included in the programs, although the majority of social
workers believe that all employees should participate in the programs.
A summary of the skills and knowledge base required by the industrial social worker to
deliver an effective service in the organisation, and to manage the development and
training of employees, is included. Some skills that require further development by social workers were identified. It was also found that individuals hold different
perceptions and definitions of affirmative action and it's implementation in organisations.
The recommendations are, inter alia, that all leadership development programs must be
continuously monitored, evaluated and subsequently followed up to assess their
applicability and effectiveness. The training of industrial social workers must focus more
on the development of negotiating and training skills and stimulation of assertive actions.
A larger variety of resources, such as video recordings, role playing, dramatisation,
interactive computer programs and small group discussions, can be used in addition, for
the training and development of grassroots level employees.
Should these recommendations be implemented, industrial social workers can make a
significant contribution to the development and improvement of South Africa's
economic, political and social situation by extending the potential of the grassroots level
employees, who constitute the greatest portion of the total labour force. A group of
people can thus be empowered to function optimally and to respond to the guidelines of
the White Paper for Social Welfare 1997. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: 'n Verkennende studie oor maatskaplike werkers se rol en verantwoordelikheid om die

Work-related well-being among police members in the North West Province / Lené Ilyna JorgensenJorgensen, Lené Ilyna January 2006 (has links)
Harsh realities exist in the South African Police Service (SAPS) that require concepts such as
burnout and work engagement to be studied in the context of work-related well-being. Although
these difficulties relate to police officials experiencing work-related trauma, more stressors seem
to manifest on an organisational level, which in turn affects the psychological well-being of
police officials. This study seeks to focus on the burnout and engagement of members of the
Local Criminal and Record Centre (LCRC) in the SAPS. The members of the LCRC are exposed
to severe occupational stressors relating to their job content, which necessitates research in
occupational stress relating to the health of SAPS members. For the purposes of this study, the
model of occupational stress, commitment and ill health of Cartwright and Cooper (2002) will be
utilised to explain strain and organisational commitment. Work-related well-being, on the other
hand, can best be explained by referring to the model of well-being developed by Schaufeli and
Bakker (200 1 ).
Since job demands play a central role in burnout, it is necessary to implement preventive
organisationally-based strategies to address high job demands. Upon reviewing stress research, it
became clear that a serious lack of intervention research exists. Little information is available
about the work-related well-being of SAPS members, whilst no documented research could be
found regarding the effects of an intervention programme on the work-related well-being of
LCRC members.
The study aimed at utilising three levels of intervention (primary, secondary and tertiary) on
organisational and individual level. An integrated classification scheme of both the positive and
negative aspects of work-related well-being on the organisational and individual level was
developed and presented to members from the LCRC over a one-year period.
The research method for each of the three articles of this study consisted of a brief literature
review and an empirical study. An availability non-randomised sample was selected because the
entire in-tact group of the LCRC of the SAPS (N=111) in the North West Province was included
in the study. A survey design was used to achieve the research objectives of both Articles 1 and
2, whilst a longitudinal survey design was utilised in Article 3, where the same instruments were
administered at two different times (over a one-year period) to the same group of participants.
The measuring instruments used in this study are the Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey
(MBI-GS), Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES), Job Demands-Resources Scale (JDRS),
Health subscales, Organisational Commitment subscales, the ASSET questionnaire and a
biographical questionnaire.
Structural equation modelling was implemented to test a structural model of work-related wellbeing.
A good fit was found for the model in which perceived job demands contributed to
burnout which, in turn, impacted on ill health. Work wellness was determined by the relationship
between two opposite constructs, namely burnout and engagement. The work-related well-being
of members of the LCRC was affected by an environment of high job demands and inadequate
resources.
In Article 2, multiple regression analyses showed that occupational stress explained 19% of the
variance in psychological ill health and 17% of the variance in physical ill health. A two-step
multiple regression analysis conducted with the variables in their continuous form revealed that
control was a statistically significant predictor of both physical and psychological ill health, while
job overload statistically significantly predicted psychological ill health. Occupational stress also
explained 17% of the variance in individual commitment and 16% of the variance in
organisational commitment. It was concluded that individual commitment moderated the effects
of stressful work relations on ill health.
LCRC members portrayed a high risk to fall ill due to exhaustion; they were less enthusiastic
about their job and tended to derive a lower sense of significance from their work. In addition,
members showed a major risk for developing low affective commitment due to low work
engagement. Exhaustion influenced the way members view their job demands, organisational and
social support, as well as growth opportunities available to them. A lack of advancement
opportunities and job insecurity contributed to feelings of exhaustion and cynicism.
Another objective of this study was to evaluate interventions used to promote work-related wellbeing
of LCRC members. Although no significant differences were found between the pre- and
post-measurements, some positive aspects did flow from the interventions. For instance an active
effort by management to address resource needs.
