Evaluating and Implementing JPEG XR Optimized for Video Surveillance

<p>This report describes both evaluation and implementation of the new coming image compression standard JPEG XR. The intention is to determine if JPEG XR is an appropriate standard for IP based video surveillance purposes. Video surveillance, especially IP based video surveillance, currently has an increasing role in the security market. To be a good standard for surveillance, the video stream generated by the camera is required to be low bit-rate, low latency on the network and at the same time keep a high dynamic display range. The thesis start with a deep insightful study of JPEG XR encoding standard. Since the standard could have different settings,optimized settings are applied to JPEG XR encoder to fit the requirement of network video surveillance. Then, a comparative evaluation of the JPEG XR versusthe JPEG is delivered both in terms of objective and subjective way. Later, part of the JPEG XR encoder is implemented in hardware as an accelerator for further evaluation. SystemVerilog is the coding language. TSMC 40nm process library and Synopsys ASIC tool chain are used for synthesize. The throughput, area, power ofthe encoder are given and analyzed. Finally, the system integration of the JPEGXR hardware encoder to Axis ARTPEC-X SoC platform is discussed.</p>

In today's industry 3D cameras are often used to inspect products. The camera produces both a 3D model and an intensity image by capturing a series of profiles of the object using laser triangulation. In many of these setups a physical encoder is attached to, for example, the conveyor belt that the product is travelling on. The encoder is used to get an accurate reading of the speed that the product has when it passes through the laser. Without this, the output image from the camera can be distorted due to a variation in velocity. In this master thesis a method for integrating the functionality of this physical encoder into the software of the camera is proposed. The object is scanned together with a pattern, with the help of this pattern the object can be restored to its original proportions. / I dagens industri används ofta 3D-kameror för att inspektera produkter. Kameran producerar en 3D-modell samt en intensitetsbild genom att sätta ihop en serie av profilbilder av objektet som erhålls genom lasertriangulering. I många av dessa uppställningar används en fysisk encoder som återspeglar hastigheten på till exempel transportbandet som produkten ligger på. Utan den här encodern kan bilden som kameran fångar bli förvrängd på grund av hastighetsvariationer. I det här examensarbetet presenteras en metod för att integrera funktionaliteten av encodern in i kamerans mjukvara. För att göra detta krävs att ett mönster placeras längs med objektet som ska bli skannat. Mönstret återfinns i bilden fångad av kameran och med hjälp av detta mönster kan hastigheten bestämmas och objektets korrekta proportioner återställas.

<p>Todays’ systems for telecommunication are getting more and more complex. Automatic testing is required to guarantee quality of the systems produced. An actual example is the introduction of GPRS traffic in the GSM network nodes. This thesis investigates the need and demands for such an automatic testing of the traffic channels in the GSM system. A solution intended to be a part of the Ericsson TSS is proposed. One problem to be solved is that today’s tools for testing do not support testing of speech channels with the speech transcoder unit installed. As part of the investigation, a speech codec is implemented for execution on current hardware used in the test platform. The selected speech codec is the enhanced full rate codec, generating a bitstream of 12.2 kbit/s, and gives a good trade-off between compression and speech quality. The report covers the design of the test tool and the implementation of speech codec. Particularly performance problems in the implementation of the encoder will be addressed.</p>

Validation study of a portable accelerometer to measure muscular power output : Correlation between the Beast Sensor and the linear encoder MuscleLab

Abstract Background: The ability to produce a high power output can be the deciding factor in determining which athlete wins or loses in a sporting event. Power output can be measured in an exercise like the squat or bench press. The use of a force plate, or a force plate paired with a linear position transducer is considered the gold standard when measuring power output in an exercise like the squat or bench press. Linear position transducers or linear encoders have also been considered valid methods. Power output can also be measured by accelerometers. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to test the concurrent validity of the accelerometer Beast Sensor by measuring average power in explosive squatting and bench pressing at 40 % and 80 % of one repetition maximum (1RM). The linear encoder MuscleLab was used as criterion. Methods: 17 test subjects, five women and 12 men (average age 28 years) were recruited. Fifteen of the subjects completed two test sessions. The first session determined their 1RM. The second session took place 7-14 days later and measured average power output during two sets of three repetitions at 40 % and 80 % of the subjects 1RM in explosive squats and bench presses. The average power output of the repetitions was measured simultaneously by Beast Sensor and MuscleLab. For the Beast Sensor to be considered valid, a correlation coefficient of 0.9 or higher needed to be reached. Results: Beast Sensor demonstrated high or very high correlations with MuscleLab for average power output of explosive squats at 40 % of 1RM (rs = 0.91), and for explosive bench presses at 40 % (rs = 0.86) and 80 % of 1RM (rs = 0.74). However, for explosive squats at 80 % of 1RM, the correlation was low (rs = 0.42). All correlations were statistically significant with p-values of &lt; 0.01. Beast Sensor was considered valid for squats at 40 % of 1RM, but neither at 80 % of 1RM in squats, nor at 40 % or 80 % of 1RM in bench presses. Conclusion: Beast Sensor showed high or very high correlations with the criterion MuscleLab in three of the four assessed data variables. Only the correlation for average power output of the explosive squats at 40 % of the subject’s 1RM reached the required correlation coefficient of 0.9 or higher for the Beast Sensor to be considered valid. Except for at 40 % of 1RM in squats, Beast Sensor missed a substantial amount of repetitions. Further studies examining the reliability of the Beast Sensor are therefore needed. / Abstrakt Bakgrund: Förmågan att producera hög effektutveckling (power) kan avgöra vilken idrottare som vinner eller förlorar en tävling. Effektutveckling kan mätas i övningar som knäböj och bänkpress. Detta kan göras med hjälp av en kraftplatta, eller en kraftplatta parad med en linear position transducer. Dessa metoder anses vara ”gold standard”, men linear position transducers eller linear encoders har också ansetts vara valida metoder. Effektutveckling kan även mätas med hjälp av en accelerometer. Syfte: Syftet med denna studie var att mäta samtidig validitet hos accelerometern Beast Sensor genom att mäta genomsnittlig effektutveckling i explosiva knäböj och bänkpressar vid 40 % och 80 % av en repetition max (1RM). MuscleLab, en linear encoder, användes som referensvärde.  Metod: 17 försökspersoner, fem kvinnor och tolv män (medelålder 28 år) rekryterades. Femton av försökspersonerna fullföljde deltagande. Vid det första testtillfället mättes 1RM. Det andra tillfället ägde rum 7-14 dagar senare och mätte genomsnittlig effektutveckling i explosiva knäböj och bänkpressar vid 40 % och 80 % av försökspersonernas uppmätta 1RM. Två set av tre repetitioner mättes vid 40 % och 80 % av 1RM i både knäböj och bänkpress. Repetitionerna mättes samtidigt av MuscleLab och Beast Sensor. För att Beast Sensor skulle anses vara valid behövde en korrelationskoefficient på 0.9 eller högre uppnås. Resultat: Beast Sensor uppvisade höga eller väldigt höga korrelationer med MuscleLab för genomsnittlig effektutveckling i explosiva knäböj vid 40 % av 1RM (rs = 0.91) och explosiva bänkpressar vid 40 % (rs = 0.86) och 80 % av 1RM (rs = 0.74). Dock uppmättes en låg korrelation för de explosiva knäböjen vid 80 % av 1RM (rs = 0.42). Alla korrelationer var statistiskt signifikanta med p-värden på &lt; 0.01. Beast Sensor ansågs vara valid för att mäta effektutveckling vid 40 % av 1RM i knäböj, men varken vid 80 % av 1RM i knäböj, eller vid 40 % eller 80 % av 1RM i bänkpressar. Slutsats: Beast Sensor visade höga eller väldigt höga korrelationer med referensvärdet från MuscleLab för tre av de fyra uppmätta variablerna. Endast korrelationen för genomsnittlig effektutveckling i explosiva knäböj vid 40 % av 1RM uppnådde den korrelationskoefficient på 0.9 eller högre som krävdes för att Beast Sensor skulle anses vara valid. Förutom vid 40 % av 1RM i knäböj, missade Beast Sensor en väsentlig andel repetitioner. Därför finns det ett behov av fler studier som undersöker reliabiliteten hos Beast Sensor.

Ces dernières années, l’utilisation de la vidéo comme support de diffusion de l’information est devenue prépondérante. Selon certains analystes, d’ici 2017, environ 90% de la bande passante mondiale sera consommée par des services utilisant des flux vidéos. Basées sur ce genre de services, les solutions de cloud gaming se démocratisent. Ces solutions ont été imaginées dans un contexte de développement fort du paradigme de cloud computing, et elles ont été dopées par la prolifération des terminaux mobiles ainsi que par la qualité des réseaux qui ne cesse de croître. Les technologies mises en œuvre dans ce type de solutions se réfèrent au rendu à distance. Pour permettre au plus grand nombre l’accès à ce type d’applications, mais aussi pour maximiser le nombre de clients par serveur, il est primordial de maîtriser au mieux la bande passante nécessaire au bon fonctionnement du service. Toutes les solutions de cloud gaming existantes utilisent une compression vidéo pour la transmission des images générées sur un serveur et à destination d’un client : le pixel règne en maître. Néanmoins, il existe bien d’autres façons de représenter une image numérique, notamment de manière paramétrique. Un certain nombre de travaux – à la fois sur l’image et la vidéo – montrent que cette approche est viable. Dans cette thèse, nous proposons un espace de représentation hybride afin de réduire le débit binaire. Notre approche repose à la fois sur une approche pixel, mais aussi sur une approche paramétrique pour la compression d’un même flux vidéo. L’utilisation de deux systèmes de compression nécessite la définition de zones, auxquelles s’appliqueront les différents encodeurs. Pour le cas d’utilisation choisi, l’utilisateur étant un joueur impliqué de manière active dans la chaîne de rendu, il est intéressant d’utiliser un partitionnement de l’image dépendant des zones ou se porte son attention. Pour déterminer les zones importantes à ses yeux, un eye-tracker a été utilisé sur plusieurs jeux et par plusieurs testeurs. Cette étude permet de mettre en avant différentes corrélations, tant au niveau des caractéristiques des images que du type de jeu utilisé. Cette étude permet de connaître les zones que le joueur regarde ou ne regarde pas directement (obtention des « cartes d’attention sélective »), et ainsi de gérer les encodeurs en conséquence. Nous établissons ensuite l’architecture et l’implémentation d’un tel encodeur multimodal (que nous appelons « transmodeur ») afin d’établir la preuve de réalisation d’un tel encodeur. Profitant alors de la maîtrise complète de l’implémentation, nous nous livrons ensuite à l’analyse de l’influence des paramètres de notre transmodeur quant à son efficacité au moyen d’une étude objective. Le transmodeur a été intégré dans la chaîne de rendu utilisée par le projet XLcloud. Un certain nombre d’améliorations (au niveau des performances notamment) seront nécessaires pour une utilisation en production, mais il est dès à présent possible de l’utiliser de manière fluide en se limitant à des résolutions spatiales légèrement inférieures au 720p et à 30 images par seconde / The use of video as an information dissemination support has become preponderant during the last few years. According to some analysts, by 2017 approximately 90% of the world's bandwidth will be consumed by video streaming services. These services have encouraged cloud gaming solutions to become more democratic. Such solutions have been devised in the context of strong development of the cloud-computing paradigm, and they were driven by the proliferation of mobile devices as well as growing network quality. The technologies used in this kind of solutions refer to as remote rendering. They allow the execution of multiple applications, while maximizing the number of clients per server. Thus, it is essential to control the necessary bandwidth to allow the required functionality of various services. The existing cloud gaming solutions in the literature use various methods of video compression to transmit images between sever and clients (pixels reigns supreme). However, there are various other ways of encoding digital images, including parametric map storage and a number of studies encourage this approach (for both image and video). In this thesis, we propose a hybrid representation of space in order to reduce the bit rate. Our approach utilizes both pixel and parametric approaches for the compression of video stream. The use of two compression techniques requires defining the area to be covered by different encoders. This is accomplished by including user to the life cycle of rendering, and attending to the area mostly concerned to the user. In order to identify the area an eye-tracker device was used on several games and several testers. We also establish a correlation between the characteristics of images and the type of game. This helps to identify areas that the player looks directly or indirectly (“maps of selective attention"), and thus, encoders are manager accordingly. For this thesis, we details and implement the architecture and algorithms for such multi-model encoder (which we call "transmodeur") as proof of concept. We also provide an analytical study of out model and the influence of various parameters on transmodeur and describe in effectiveness through an objective study. Our transmodeur (rendering system) has been successfully integrated into XLcloud project for rendering purposes. A number of improvement (especially in performance) will be required for production use, but it is now possible to use it smoothly using spatial resolutions slightly lower than 720p at 30 frames per second

This thesis deals with a concept and physical prototype of an intelligent, electronically programmable stamp, based on inkjet print. The stamp is basically a small inkjet printer. The stamp can print a simple custom text and is meant to replace regular office stamps. The benefit of the proposed stamp should include cost reduction and need for multiple stamps. The theoretical concept is followed by a prototype, which is an essential part of this work.

Práce se zabývá návrhem a implementací testovacího zařízení pro manipulačnínmechanismus vzorku v elektronovém mikroskopu. Testovací zařízení a jeho software zajištuje meření několika parametrů mechanismu, jejich statistické vyhodnocení a porovnání se specifikací. Cílem je vytvořit komplexní testovací zařízení s jednoduchým uživatelským rozhraním, s požadavkem náhrady stávajícího nemodulárního a nestabilního řešení a jeho rozšíření o testování dalších parametrů.
