Examining the evolution of the Transition Program preparing academically gifted students for early entrance to university

The VSB/UBC Transition Program is a Ministry of Education Provincial Resource Program for highly academically gifted young adolescents. Unique to British Columbia and Canada since its inception in 1993, the two-year program is currently housed on the UBC campus and affiliated with University Hill Secondary School. Despite an extraordinary range of hurdles - which are fully discussed and analyzed in this study - the eventual establishment of an early entrance to university program is seen as a remarkable accomplishment of educational leadership and organizational learning involving institutional partnerships, flexible governance and a shared commitment to academically gifted young people. The study examined the complexities of implementing a unique educational innovation for academically highly gifted young students in a university setting and in a provincial context which has not traditionally favored support for the highly gifted. The study had two phases. An historical narrative traced the development of this innovation and described how the current program model evolved in response to student needs. Documentary evidence based on original documents and interviews with program developers, implementers, and participants provided a multi-faceted perspective of the program's complex history and highlighted factors contributing to program success for students, as well as problems encountered along the way. Building upon this narrative, the second phase surveyed and then analyzed the views and expectations of students, parents, and staff as well as program planners at different stages of the program. These various perspectives were used to advance an understanding of how and why this unique program developed as it did, and how its participants variously responded to a wide range of expectations and needs to arrive at the current delivery model. The study concludes with a discussion of critical issues and documents the strengths and unmet needs of academically gifted students that have emerged over the course of the program's development. It culminates by providing an understanding of key elements related to program success for gifted youth together with recommendations for future program development and a broader array of programs and services for academically gifted students in secondary schools and post-secondary institutions in BC. The study ends by encouraging more support for educational innovations that respond to the developmentally unique needs of all students, and a commitment to on-going short term as well as longitudinal research on the Transition Program and its graduates. / Education, Faculty of / Educational Studies (EDST), Department of / Graduate

Nesse trabalho, usando como principal referencial teórico os conceitos e a abordagem metodológica proposta por Bourdieu, procurou-se verificar de que forma o vestibular é tratado nos discursos da grande mídia impressa e especializada. Mais especificadamente, qual a relação, de acordo com esses discursos, entre a posse de um diploma de nível superior (em especial diplomas de instituições de maior prestígio, que fazem os vestibulares mais concorridos) e a posição social ocupada pelos indivíduos. A hipótese foi que nesses discursos a escolaridade serviria como uma justificativa de cunho meritocrático para a posição social ocupada pelas pessoas. Para isso foram analisados os cadernos especializados em vestibular e os classificados de empregos dos dois maiores jornais do estado de São Paulo (que são também dois dos três maiores jornais do país): a Folha de S. Paulo e o O Estado de S. Paulo. Com isso pretendeu-se verificar, além da hipótese formulada, uma possível homogeneidade no trato das questões que relacionam escolaridade e mercado de trabalho em destacados veículos da mídia impressa paulista. A pesquisa contemplou também um exercício de observação feito com uma revista do Grupo Abril especializada em educação, o Guia do Estudante Vestibular 2008 e dois exemplares de um suplemento especial da Folha de S. Paulo, o Guia das Profissões 2006 e 2007. O período analisado foi o mais recente possível a partir do início da pesquisa empírica. Assim, os Cadernos Empregos dos jornais Folha de S. Paulo e O Estado de S. Paulo, bem como os cadernos Fovest e Vestibular, dos mesmo jornais, respectivamente, tiveram todas as suas edições do segundo semestre de 2007 analisadas. O que foi possível constatar a partir dos dados obtidos foi uma relação consolidada entre escolaridade e exclusão social. A posse de um ou mais diplomas de nível superior ou até de pós-graduação não foi apresentada nos veículos pesquisados como garantia de ocupação de uma posição social de destaque, nem mesmo de vagas no mercado de trabalho, por mais prestígio social que eles carregassem. Por sua vez, a ausência de pelo menos um diploma com um mínimo de prestígio aparece, na lógica dos discursos difundidos pelos veículos de mídia pesquisados, como um enorme obstáculo para a conquista de uma posição dominante ou destacada na sociedade. Assim, de acordo com o que se apurou nesse trabalho, tem-se nos espaços pesquisados uma inversão do valor social dos certificados escolares causados, ao menos em parte, pelo maior acesso das camadas populares aos diplomas de nível superior. A inflação de diplomas traz consigo uma desvalorização dos mesmos e uma ressignificação de seu papel. Alcançar estágios mais altos de escolaridade continua a ser um fator de distinção social. No entanto, essa distinção não parece mais ser uma distinção positiva que justifica privilégios adquiridos pela elite, mas antes uma distinção negativa onde a ausência de diplomas de níveis superiores de ensino serve para como explicação aceitável para que parcelas significativas da população se vejam condenadas a ocupar posições sociais mais rebaixadas. Foi possível constatar também nos discursos pesquisados uma similaridade entre as mensagens ali difundidas e os discursos de auto-ajuda, de forma que o empenho e o cumprimento de determinadas receitas aparecem como condições fundamentais para se alcançar o sucesso acadêmico e profissional. Dentro dessa lógica, a obtenção de certificados escolares aparece como parte elementar do receituário básico para se conseguir uma melhor posição social exatamente por representar não só o domínio de determinados saberes, mas também por demonstrar empenho e dedicação. / This study, which used as the main theoretical referential the concepts and the methodological approach set forth by Bourdieu, aimed to verify how the entrance examination to universities is treated in the discourses of the mainstream media, printed and specialized, and particularly the relationship, according to those discourses, between the fact the possession of a university degree and the social position occupied by the individual. Our hypothesis was that schooling would be useful as a justification of meritocratic character for the social position occupied by the individual. Therefore, the specialized sections and want- ads of two major newspapers, Folha de S. Paulo and O Estado de S. Paulo were analyzed. We had in view to verify, not only the formulated hypothesis but also a likely homogeneity when tackling issues which relate schooling and job market in this medium. Our research also contemplated an observation exercise undertaken along with a magazine from Grupo Abril specialized in entrance examinations: Guia do Estudante 2008 and two editions from Guia das Profissoes 2006 and 2007 (Folha de S. Paulo). The period examined was the most recent one from the outset of the empirical research .Thus, the sections \"want-ads\" of the newspapers Folha de S. Paulo and O Estado de S. Paulo, as well as the sections Fovest and Vestibular (Entrance Examinations ), respectively, had all their editions from the second semester of 2007 on analyzed. From data obtained, it was possible to establish a consolidated relationship between schooling and social exclusion. Possession of one or more degrees was not presented in the surveyed vehicles as a warranty that the individual would occupy a position of social prominence, or obtain a position in the job market. . On the other hand, the absence of a diploma appears, in the logic of the discourses, as a major obstacle to the achievement of a dominance or prominence in the society. According to what was found in this study, there has been a reversal of the social value of university degrees caused, at least in part, by a greater access of low- income classes to these diplomas. Diploma inflation causes their devaluation and changes the meaning of their role. Achieving a higher stage of education hasn\'t ceased to be a factor of social distinction. Nevertheless, it does not seem to be any longer a positive distinction that justifies privileges acquired by the elite, but a negative distinction where the absence of diplomas of higher levels of education serves as an acceptable explanation to why significant portions of the population see themselves condemned to occupy lower social positions. It was also possible to ascertain, in the researched discourses, a similarity between the messages presented there and the discourses of self-improvement, so that the commitment and accomplishment of certain norms appear as basic requirements for achieving academic and professional success. The acquiring of school certificates appears as the basic recipe to achieve a better social position precisely because it represents not only the mastering of certain knowledge, but also because it shows commitment and dedication.

Improvement of e-commerce of entrance tickets implemented in Brno City Theatre is suggested based on detailed analysis of internal and external factors, which are defined with usage of SLEPT, SWOT analysis and Porter model of competition.

V práci je pomocí analýz vyhodnoceno jak interní, tak i externí prostředí organizace. Finální návrh řešení čerpá především z uvedených analýz, navrhuje kroky které by organizace měla podniknout aby na zahraniční trh úspěšně vstoupila a obsahuje i zjednodušený finanční plán pro první rok působení firmy na trhu.

Návrh je reakcí na silné postavení společnosti na českém trhu s čerstvými šťávami a snaží se najít cestu k dalšímu rozvoji společnosti. V práci je za pomocí analýz vyhodnoceno jak interní, tak i externí prostředí společnosti. Finální návrh řešení je čerpán především z uvedených analýz, kde jsou navrženy kroky, dle kterých by se společnost měla držet, aby na zahraniční trh úspěšně vstoupila. Dále je v návrzích vypracovaný zjednodušený finanční plán pro první rok působení společnosti na trhu a plán pro další rozšíření restaurací do ostatních měst.

Druhá, praktická část analyzuje postup zavedení nového typu bot ve florbalové divizi Yonex na český trh. Třetí, závěrečná část práce je zhodnocení marketingové strategie firmy Yonex a stanovení doporučení, jak připravenou strategii zavedení produktu realizovat. Požadovaným výstupem práce je vyhodnocení analýzy a stanovení již zmíněných doporučení, které mohou proces zavádění nových produktů firmy Yonex zlepšit a popřípadě i celý proces usnadnit.

Orientador: Paula Tavares Pinto / Resumo: Tendo como base teórico-metodológica o ensino de língua inglesa (LI) para fins específicos (IFE) (DUDLEY-EVANS; ST. JOHN, 1998) em associação com a Linguística de Corpus (LC) (BERBER SARDINHA, 2004, 2009; O’KEEFFE, MCCARTHY, CARTER, 2007; VIANA, TAGNIN, 2011), o objetivo do presente trabalho é avaliar a aplicabilidade do levantamento de agrupamentos lexicais para o desenvolvimento de atividades de compreensão de escrita em LI a fim de contribuir para a identificação vocabular de notícias da atualidade. Para isso, foram compilados quatro corpora de textos jornalísticos autênticos com temática saúde, tecnologia, política e mundo, advindos dos sites CNN® e BBC® (coleta em 2018) com o intuito de desenvolver atividades voltadas para o vestibular da UNESP (Universidade Estadual Paulista). Por meio do software Sketch Engine® foram extraídas as palavras-chave mais frequentes de cada corpus e, concomitantemente, os agrupamentos lexicais dessas palavras para posterior desenvolvimento das atividades, de modo que os exercícios tenham como base as combinações lexicais mais frequentes das notícias compiladas. Em função disso, foi possível verificar que quando o conteúdo do corpus está em consonância com o objetivo dos alunos, é possível extrair informações relevantes para o desenvolvimento de materiais úteis para a sala de aula. Assim, os textos jornalísticos foram muito importantes para os exercícios elaborados por meio dos corpora, visto que esse gênero textual é constante nos vestibular... JOHN, 1998) along with the use of Corpus Linguistics (CL) BERBER SARDINHA, 2004, 2009; O'KEEFFE, MCCARTHY, CARTER, 2007; VIANA, TAGNIN, 2011), the aim of this research is to evaluate the applicability of lexical bundles for the development of reading comprehension activities in English in order to contribute to the lexical comprehension of current news. To this end, four corpora of authentic journalistic texts on health, technology, politics and world, from the CNN® and BBC® websites, were compiled (collected in 2018) in order to develop activities aimed at the entrance exam of UNESP (São Paulo State University). We extracted the most frequent keywords from each corpus with the aid of the Sketch Engine® software and, concomitantly, the lexical bundles originated from these words for further development of teaching activities, so that the exercises are based on the most frequent lexical combinations of the compiled news. As a result, it was possible to verify that when the content of the corpus is in line with the students' objective, it is possible to extract relevant information for the development of useful materials for the classroom. The project originated as a means to find a solution to the lack of legibility that the National Zoological Gardens’ entrance expresses where it is situated on the Northern gateway into the Pretoria CBD. In order to develop an appropriate responsive architecture, the proposed solution aims to find the requirements for a successful public interface for tourist attractions and the local community. Attention will also be given to the transitional spaces between the natural environments of the Zoo and the city.
