Entrepreneurial learning, opportunity recognition and development - Evaluating the impact of a training programme at TSiBA Education, Cape Town, South Africa

Samsodien, Adeeb January 2017 (has links)
Magister Commercii - MCom (Business and Finance) / The youth of South Africa is currently faced with high levels of unemployment and poverty. This raises concerns about the future of the South African people and its economy. Consequently, much is needed to develop the youth to allow for a prosperous future. A decrease in poverty and unemployment was found to be linked to an increase in education. Entrepreneurial education can have a significant impact on entrepreneurial success. This research paper aims to assess the influence of entrepreneurial education and training on students' entrepreneurial development. To ensure a comprehensive assessment of the development of students, I utilised a mixed methodology to assess students both quantitatively and qualitatively. The study assessed a sample of students from South Africa and the United States of America who jointly partook in a two-week entrepreneurial education and training programme at TSiBA Education, Cape Town, South Africa. Entrepreneurial education and training had a positive effect on the students' entrepreneurial development, entrepreneurial orientation and intentions to start a business. While entrepreneurial orientation aids the exploitation of business opportunities, before opportunities can be exploited they must be recognised. Bringing into question the link between students' entrepreneurial orientation and their abilities to recognise and develop opportunities into successful ventures. To explore this I interviewed two participants and found the high entrepreneurially orientated participant to exhibit greater opportunity recognition and development abilities, compared to the low entrepreneurially orientated participant. I concluded by finding that although differences do exist between high and low entrepreneurially orientated students, entrepreneurial education and training could positively influence students' entrepreneurial orientation and assist in the development of entrepreneurs. The results suggest that TSiBA Education should attempt to increase the duration of the entrepreneurial programme to maximize the influence of the entrepreneurial education and training.

The research has as methodological support the quali-quantitative or mixed approach, characterized as a descriptive exploratory study. For quantitative data collection, were utilized a questionnaire and a test of entrepreneurial tendency (TED), and for qualitative data collection, a semi-structured interview and document analysis. .The questionnaire and the test were applied to 30 students graduating in Business administration and an interview was conducted with six of these students and another with three professors of the course. The application of the test of entrepreneurial tendency revealed that the students were classified near the expected parameter in the dimensions need for achievement and tendency to have autonomy and independence , below the parameter in the dimensions tendency to take risk and creative tendency and only above the parameter in the dimension tendency to tale initiative and determination . Through the document analysis of the Administration Course, only brief mentions related to the entrepreneurial formation of students were found in the general objective of the course and in the professiographic profile of the graduating, and the presence of a discipline about Entrepreneurship and New Business Creation in the curriculum program. The professors interviewed, in an isolated attitude, informed that they promote discussions about the subject, but this is not a standard procedure, because it is not a systematized practice established in the course pedagogical project, in the teaching plans and in the teaching plans. The students interviewed manifested expectation related to the formation focused on entrepreneurship, but did not perceive specific instruments in the course destined to the development of entrepreneurial characteristics, neither an integrating effort of the disciplines for awakening and stimulating them to initiate their own business. It was concluded that the structure of the course under analysis should be reevaluated with the purpose of promoting interdisciplinarity and increasing the content of courses directly related to the subject in order to provide students the development of the needed entrepreneurial skills for increasing their success chance in undertaking their own business.

A situational analysis of entrepreneurship mentors in South Africa

Watson, Gavin Edward Halliday 30 November 2004 (has links)
The South African government, in an attempt to accelerate economic growth and development, has identified the SMME sector and entrepreneurs as a vehicle capable of bringing about this change. Unfortunately, this growth has been stifled due to the high failure rate of entrepreneurial businesses in the SMME sector. A possible solution for SMMEs and entrepreneurs is the introduction of mentoring. Mentoring entrepreneurs is the function of nurturing and supporting entrepreneurs by providing them with professional skills development and moral support in an attempt to positively impact on the business's sustainability. The study is the first of its kind in that it relates specifically to entrepreneurship mentors. This study empirically endeavours to determine the basic profile of entrepreneurship mentors in South Africa and their skills sets. The study aims to represent the importance of the skills as represented in the model and to understand the entrepreneurship mentoring environment in South Africa. / Business Management / M. Com. Ecossistemas de inovação e empreendedorismo: uma contribuição de análise na Rede AGROINNCUBA / Ecosystems of innovation and entrepreneurship: a contribution of qualitative analysis in the AGROINNCUBA Network

Araujo, Níddia Mari Alves de 14 December 2018 (has links)
Aiming at the growth of technology-based companies, there is a movement of cooperation between universities, business incubators, science parks and other segments of national and international society, with the objective of connecting and stimulating knowledge networks so that entrepreneurship is fostered efficiently and provide the generation of structured and healthy companies in the medium and long term. The main objective of this work was to contribute to the study of how the so-called ecosystems of innovation are generated, once the focus was on a qualitative research, through the analysis of statements, on the part of the actors involved in a case study linked to the international network of incubators and science / technology parks of the agro-food system, named AGROINNCUBA and supported by the CYTED Program. After analyzing and observing the speeches of the coordinators and managers of the incubators of companies linked to AGROINNCUBA, it was possible to see that the promotion of entrepreneurship actually occurs in the ecosystem to which business incubators and parks are inserted. In the end, the initial hypotheses were confirmed, since: a) the case study suggests that incubators and science and technology parks in the network are part of an innovation ecosystem with strong links with research centers and universities. This connection was vital to the genesis and its proper functioning and, b) that the AGROINNCUBA Network is formed by a group of more mature members and another group with members still in consolidation. The interaction between these two groups was considered healthy and productive in order to look for processes of evolution and sharing of experience curves.

Processus d'innovation dans l'entrepreneuriat : la place des artefacts dans l'activité en équipe-projet / Innovation process in entrepreneurship : the place of artifacts in the project-team activity

Poidi, Kanina Irène 08 February 2019 (has links)
This thesis defends a model of entrepreneurship as a dynamic, global and systemic process, mediated by technologies. We present entrepreneurship as an activity in context, embodied in a culture, a story, an environment, and which develops itself through interactions. The moments of cooperation and coordination in localized teams, or multi-localized teams (Vacherand-Revel, 2017) constitute spaces of intersubjectivity (Zarifian 1996) in which different artefacts are used. We hypothesize that these artifacts in the activity will actively participate in the development of innovative entrepreneurial activity by providing support for team training, idea development, and design. Based on a qualitative and developmental methodological protocol, the analysis highlights several factors and resources of the activity, in particular the entrepreneurial training device, and the artefacts mobilized by the actors. These artifacts in the activity (Adé, 2000) are transformed into artifacts of the activity during instrumental genesis processes (Rabardel, 1995). They can then take a status of intermediate objects (Vinck, 1999, 2009) or boundary objects (Star, 2010, Vinck, 2009) within the activity. The analysis shows the predominant role of the innovation object, which is a common production of the team. It is both an outcome and a starting point for the development of intentions and the trajectory of the project. The innovation object arises from a process of design and creation (Almudever, 2012). This research shows the interdependence of the situations of cooperation and collective design in the formalization of the innovation object. The nature of the entrepreneurial project – an object built and under construction - highlights the interest of a dialogue between Activity theory and Action theories.
