MMDES: Multimedia Digital Ecosystem

Asres Kidanu, Salomon, Cardinales, Yudith, Chbeir, Richard, De Ponte, Víctor, Figueroa, Alejandro, Rodríguez, Figueroa, Raymundo Ibañez, Carlos Arturo 08 1900 (has links)
19th IEEE International Conference on Computational Science and Engineering (CSE 2016), is the event, in a series of highly successful International Conferences on Computational Science and Engineering, held mainly as the International Workshop on High Performance Scientific and Engineering Computing for 11 editions. August 24-26, 2016 - Paris, France / Currently multimedia contents dominate the information exchanged in Internet, particularly through social networks. Each actor on the Internet becomes producer and consumer of contents. Nevertheless, social network and other traditional collaborative environments present limitations regarding content selection, categorization, aggregation, linking and interoperability, and usage control and privacy. In [1], we proposed the architecture (based on a peer-to-peer infrastructure and Semantic Web) of a MultiMedia Digital EcoSystem (MMDES), as a new environment for collaboration and sharing of multimedia resources, multimedia processings, as well as for computing and storage capabilities. In this paper, we describe MMDES framework and functionalities related to managing the collective knowledge and equilibrium in MMDES. We also describe the implementation of MMDES using a mobile platform in order to provide resources’ sharing for the Archivo Nacional de Arte Rupestre (ANAR) in Venezuela

Interior Design and Navigation in Virtual Reality / Inredning och Navigation i Virtuell Verklighet

Tingvall, Jesper January 2015 (has links)
This thesis examined how virtual reality could be used in interior design. The thesis was limited to virtual reality experienced using a head mounted display. The Method was to integrate virtual reality into an existing interior design software called CET Designer. After investigating the available commercial virtual reality hardware and software Oculus SDK and OpenVR was chosen. Unity 3D was used as a prototyping tool for experimenting with different interaction and navigation methods. An user study with 14 participants was performed. It compared four different navigation methods. First person shooter style controls using a gamepad was proven to be the best one. It can also be concluded that having a bad navigation style could decreased the user experience in virtual reality and cause motion sickness.

Investigating the impact of a shared services intermediation on the perceptions of B2B buyer-supplier relationship benefits

Hirst, Bradley January 2013 (has links)
It is clear that there is a strong drive for organisations to adopt the shared service model with the intention to gain some economic benefits. This research also acknowledges the theory on supplier relationship management, as well as relationship quality management and how these two bodies of knowledge are connected to shared service and ultimately how they affect the relationship benefits between buyers and sellers in business to business environments. With the growing importance to distinguish one’s business from others to gain competitive advantage, relationships have become a crucial differentiator. It is important to appreciate whether the shared service model enhances relationships or not. This research therefore sought to examine the relationship quality measure elements such as trust, satisfaction and commitment as well as the relationship benefits; social, psychological and functional which are impacted by the introduction of a shared service. The research findings offer some important insights into how the introduction of a shared service model into an organisational structure impacts these relationship benefits. When comparing a shared service structure to that of a decentralised model it was evident that all elements of relationship quality and benefits changed. The results indicated that once the shared service became the central point of contact and communication for many of the suppliers, relationship quality and relationship benefits declined. Further, the results found were that many of the anticipated benefits of shared service were also not seen or experienced by the suppliers. This research involved two phases, a qualitative phase component and a quantitative phase. The qualitative phase involved face-to-face interviews with five significant suppliers to Sasol, companies in industries such as Civil, Manufacturing as well as industrial goods suppliers. The quantitative phase involved an electronic survey, distributed to all of Sasol’s suppliers. The data gathered from these interviews and surveys, together with the reviewed literature helped to measure the affects of shared service on supplier relationships. One hundred and forty questionnaires were processed and data was subjected to a variety of statistical analysis. This research will add to the limited knowledge of shared service as well as equip managers implementing shared service with some strategic insights. When implementing shared service it is imperative to look beyond mere cost savings and to also consider the relationship affects for all concerned when changing the relationship dynamics. / Dissertation (MBA)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / ccgibs2014 / Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) / MBA / Unrestricted

Förskollärare och barnens kamrater som en viktig del i barns språkutveckling : En intervjustudie om utemiljöns möjligheter att locka till lek som främjar den språklig utvecklingen / Preschool teachers and childrens peers as an important part of childrens language development : An interview study on the outdoor enviroments opportunities to attract play which promotes language learning

Tillström, Sanna January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to find out how preschool teachers consider to take care of childrens outdoor play in order to achive an increased language development among the children. Focus lays on both the things that happen in the outdoor enviroments as well as on how the preeschool teacher approach childrens play to promote the language development. The study was made through qualitative interviews and I interviewed five preeschool teachers on three different preeschools. The results shows that preeschool teachers sees both them selfs but also childrens peers as important rolemodels when it comes to the childrens language development. To participate in plays as an adult to challenge the children linguistic was not uncommon but also to create new children constellations was a part of the work in the outdoor enviroments. The results also shows that the preeschool teachers saw them selfs as just as important as the material to attract to new plays in the outdoor enviroment. The fact that the children developed their language constantly through play was something all the preeschool teachers agreed on.

This study examined the relationship between interpersonal styles and the individual's participation in social networks in different workplaces. Social networks are formed by emotional ties, cognitive, and resource sharing established between social actors. Differences in job performance may be related to the positioning of people in their social networks. Occupy a position of centrality in a social network enables the acquisition of important information and various forms of interpersonal influence. The achievement of these privileged positions is associated with benefits such as career success, performance and job satisfaction. Studies on personality have experienced a renaissance in the organizational, and many have shown the importance of personality traits to predict occupational outcomes. It is known that the prevalence of certain personality traits in the workplace form particular ways of living of the group, so it is important to remember that environments vary in terms of personality styles which value and give acceptance to the wearer. The interpersonal styles are behavioral strategies that describe the usual way a person interacts socially and seek acceptance and status in the communities in which it participates. In this sense, interpersonal styles are important to understand the individual's interpersonal success in their search to be accepted, recognized and have a prominent place on your workplace. Thus, the objective of this study was to analyze and compare the relationship between interpersonal styles and centrality in social networks in different teams. In this study, participated 80 workers, divided into 03 teams from different companies: marketing department of a newspaper (MKT, n= 24); services registration documents (SRD, n= 20); factory mechanical (FAB, n= 36). The questionnaire consisted of sociodemographic variables, the Inventory ESEI (Interpersonal Styles Scale), and the sociometric questionnaire that enabled the calculation of the indices of centrality of trust networks. The teams were characterized in relation to socio-demographic variables, the type of workplace and the average profile of interpersonal styles. Then the interpersonal styles of the actors were correlated to their levels of centrality in the trust network, and some cases were analyzed. There were significant differences in the dimensions of interpersonal styles between teams, and correlational analysis of qualitative and interpersonal styles of key players, each team indicated that values interpersonal actors with different profiles, giving them acceptance and prestige. The results reveal the importance of the kind of workplace to understand the interpersonal styles prevalent in the team and its relations with the centrality of actors in the network of trust. The implications of the relationship between interpersonal styles, the centrality of the actors in the networks of trust and the kinds of workplace are discussed. Finally, we consider the importance of aligning the personality dimensions of occupational environment in the quest for a more accurate understanding of human behavior at work. / This study examined the relationship between interpersonal styles and the individual's participation in social networks in different workplaces. Design of a Smart Cart App for Automated Shopping in Supermarkets

Arvidsson, Aida, Hassani, Lina January 2020 (has links)
In today's society, many things are becoming smarter, mostly with the help of theInternet of Things. Taking a look at smart shopping, several optional ways of shoppinghave been introduced in recent years to enhance and streamline shopping. Some ofthese are online shopping and self-services which include self-checkouts and handheldscanners. This has been a successful approach, which can be seen by the fact that oneof the biggest grocery shopping chains in Sweden called ICA has 1.5 million customersin their loyalty program where around 30% of these use handheld scanners. These30% bring about 60% of ICAs total revenue in some of their biggest stores. However, one of the major challenges with self-services is that they are very expensive, as asystem for an average sized store in Sweden can cost around 1.5 million SEK, whichmakes it difficult for smaller stores to offer this service. A way of combating this couldbe to create a smartphone shopping application (Smart Cart app) with a user-centereddesign, which has a strong likelihood to lower the costs as well as save time. Previousresearch has shown attempts of similar technologies, however, some of these hadlimitations in the presentation of their design and user research. This study aims toexplore the possibility of designing a Smart Cart application prototype with auser-centered approach based on Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) to extend uponprevious proposals.User data, which has been analyzed to find key points in design, has been gathered bya questionnaire with 275 participants and interviews with 3 people. This data has beenused together with information from a literature review in order to design the SmartCart app prototype, which is a visualisation of the study results. The prototype issupported by an analysis which shows why it is important to involve users in thedesign process and what should be considered when doing so. The study also found adesire for such an app as, for instance, 51.7% of self-scanning customers wouldconsider using it. In addition, results also support that when users accept and arefamiliar with certain functionalities in applications, they are more likely to adopt theapplication. The majority of the participants have a positive attitude towardsapplications in smart shopping and have similar desires of functions and appearance.Lastly, future research is needed on different aspects and point of views for furtherdevelopment of the Smart Cart application and other similar applications.

Coastal Enviroments And Processes In The Canadian Artic Archipelago

Taylor, Robert 05 1900 (has links)

The prime objective is to define and characterize the various coastal environments in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. The research, Hhich utilizes both secondary source information and actual field observations, takes into account coastal morphology, beach profile, sediment types, sea ice conditions, tidal range, depth of the frost table and wave energy. From a total of twelve coastal divisions based on the criteria of coastal morphology, tidal conditions and length of open water season, five have been chosen as t he basic coastal environ ments of the Arctic Archipelago. They are as follows: the Arctic Coastal Plain, the Ice Shelf, the Fiord environment, the High Straight coastal environment, and the Ridge and Valley coastal environment. Field observations within the last three environments provided additional evidence for the divisions and observations on the beach and nearshore characteristics at five selected locations.
/ Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)

Indexing high-dimensional data in highly distributed environments

Huang, Ling Wei Unknown Date (has links)
我們提出一個利用reference point[2,13]的作法RP-CAN( Reference Point-Content Addressable Network )來改善查詢的效率。 / There has been an increasing interest in deploying a storage system in a highly distributed environment because of the rapid increasing data. And many database applications such as time series, biological and multimedia database, handle high-dimensional data. In these systems, k nearest-neighbors query is one of the most frequent queries but costly operation that is to find objects in the high-dimensional database that are similar to a given query object. As in conventional DBMS, indexes can indeed improve query performance but cannot deploy directly in highly distributed systems because the environment has become more complex. To efficiently support k nearest-neighbors query, a high-dimensional indexing strategy, is developed for the highly distributed environment. In this paper, we propose an efficient indexing strategy, RP-CAN( Reference Point-Content Addressable Network ), to improve the performance of the k nearest-neighbors query in a highly distributed environment. In the end of this paper, we designed an experiment to demonstrate that the performance of RP-CAN is better than RT-CAN in high dimensional space. Thus, our RP-CAN index could efficiently handle the high dimensional data.

Vliv kyselého prostředí na žárobetony s rozdílným obsahem cementu. / Effect of acidic influence on the refractory castable with different cement content.

Mátl, Daniel January 2015 (has links)
There are applications of refractory concretes for places where these are exposed to corrosive environments. This diploma thesis deals with both description the corrosive effects and methodology of their testing. One of the most important properties of materials, affecting the chemical corrosion resistance, is their density. The practical part of the thesis is focused on testing the refractory concretes which are currently used for applications. The aggregates were tested for the resistance to sulfuric acid.

Highly reliable, low-latency communication in low-power wireless networks

Brachmann, Martina 11 January 2019 (has links)
Low-power wireless networks consist of spatially distributed, resource-constrained devices – also referred to as nodes – that are typically equipped with integrated or external sensors and actuators. Nodes communicate with each other using wireless transceivers, and thus, relay data – e. g., collected sensor values or commands for actuators – cooperatively through the network. This way, low-power wireless networks can support a plethora of different applications, including, e. g., monitoring the air quality in urban areas or controlling the heating, ventilation and cooling of large buildings. The use of wireless communication in such monitoring and actuating applications allows for a higher flexibility and ease of deployment – and thus, overall lower costs – compared to wired solutions. However, wireless communication is notoriously error-prone. Message losses happen often and unpredictably, making it challenging to support applications requiring both high reliability and low latency. Highly reliable, low-latency communication – along with high energy-efficiency – are, however, key requirements to support several important application scenarios and most notably the open-/closed-loop control functions found in e. g., industry and factory automation applications. Communication protocols that rely on synchronous transmissions have been shown to be able to overcome this limitation. These protocols depart from traditional single-link transmissions and do not attempt to avoid concurrent transmissions from different nodes to prevent collisions. On the contrary, they make nodes send the same message at the same time over several paths. Phenomena like constructive interference and capture then ensure that messages are received correctly with high probability. While many approaches relying on synchronous transmissions have been presented in the literature, two important aspects received only little consideration: (i) reliable operation in harsh environments and (ii) support for event-based data traffic. This thesis addresses these two open challenges and proposes novel communication protocols to overcome them.
