The case of the missing skills - Business development opportunities using a holistic approach to CSR, incorporating figurational dynamics

McIntosh, Bryan January 2017 (has links)
yes / This paper examines the feasibility of using a holistic approach to sustainability in a business context. The aim is to help organisations from a healthcare perspective increase their adaptability to volatile business environments, by aligning external and internal elements with success, based on internal validation of output. A literature review on existing sustainability theory was conducted and the results divided into versions of sustainability from an initial idea (1.0), to a situation where sustainably will become the nature of business rather than one of its objectives (4.0). In order to align business health and strengthen self-healing powers of businesses, eight pillars of relevance were identified as post conditional. The method adopted to interpret the approaches was informed by a structured process of healthcare perspectiveness healing using figurational dynamics as an analytical lens. Findings indicate that for implementation of an improvement structure based on holistic governance to be successful, acceptance of changes in economic, political and social spheres towards holistic business development need to exist. Secondly, figurational dynamics has to evolve as an overarching or inclusive system to include influences and inspiration from various specialist arenas.

An assessment of the implementation of the community environmental management programme in Zambia : a case study of Luansobe Settlement - Mufulira district.

January 2004 (has links)
This dissertation comprises two components. Component A consists of background to the research and includes the problem statement, aim and objectives. It also includes the literature review, which provides details on the concept of community-based natural resources management (CBNRM) and its benefits as a participatory approach adopted in the management of natural resources. Component B is presented as a research paper that complies with the requirements of the selected journal for purposes of publication shown in appendix I. Relevant information on the purpose of the study and background to the concept of CBNRM from component A is included in component B for purposes of the research paper. It also includes research findings, analysis and conclusions of the study. CBNRM has been identified as a feasible participatory approach to natural resources management based on community needs and priorities. This research reviews the implementation of the Community Environmental Management Programme (CEMP) as a participatory approach adopted by the Zambian Government to address growing environmental concerns, with particular reference to deforestation, as a result of human activities. This study focuses on Luansobe settlement in Mufulira district, one of eight districts in which the CEMP is being implemented as a pilot project. Luansobe is located in the peri-urban area of Mufulira. The majority of the people living in the area are unemployed and live below the poverty datum line. These people are largely dependent on natural resources for their livelihoods. Unfortunately, some of the activities people are engaged in are having adverse impacts on the resources, in particular forest resources. The main sources of livelihoods are charcoal production and subsistence farming, which are contributing greatly to the deforestation of the surrounding Nsato Forest Reserve. The CEMP is intended to set up institutional structures at national, district and community levels to address the problem of deforestation and the related poverty levels. This is under the premise that this situation can be improved with good management and community involvement. The study reviewed literature on the concept of CBNRM with particular reference to co-management as one form of a participatory approach with shared responsibility on the management of natural resources between government and local communities. The significance of community involvement in the use and management of forest resources is highlighted. The factors necessary for the effective implementation of joint management programmes are also highlighted and their importance in achieving conservation, community development and good governance. A case study was reviewed to show the importance of these indicators to the successful implementation of such participatory programmes. A list of indicators was compiled as the basis for the assessment of the implementation of the CEMP. A review of government documents provided background information on the establishment of the CEMP, the need for its implementation in Luansobe and the structures put in place at national, district and community levels to implement the programme. These data were supplemented by information gathered through semi-structured interviews with purposively selected key informants and workshops with local community members. Information obtained showed that the institutional structures implementing the CEMP on the ground are different from those set out in documents and are deficient of communication links among the stakeholders, especially community members. This has had negative effects on the representativeness of decisions made regarding the implementation of the programme and accountability of leaders to community members. This has further affected the implementation of projects under the CEMP intended to improve people's livelihoods through alternative sources of income that promote the sustainable use of forest resources. / Thesis (M.Sc.)- University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2004.

Beginning with the conceptualization of economic analysis of law, a free translation of the law and economics movement, which aims to study legal events under certain economic principles, notably that of efficiency, according to the economists of the movement. Beginning with some mandatory definitions in the field of environmental law, through sustainable development, the national solid waste policy and the polluter pays and protector-receiver principles, through the practical example in which the reverse logistics of the used lubricating oil itself or already occurred even before the validity of the national solid waste policy, and as a result of the mandatory reverse logistics of that waste. The aforementioned case analysis shows, supported by an executive interview of the company that provided the example paradigm, evidence in a practical way that the economic efficiency, which can be equated with the financial viability, of a given transaction can transcend the legal determination. The research will be based on indirect documentation. There will be documentary and bibliographic research, including Internet research. In the work the hypothetical-deductive method will be used with the construction of conjectures based on the hypotheses, that is, they can be confirmed or not in the final considerations.

Spatial description of leased rural state land inconsistent with the cadastre : its capture and maintenance on an alphanumeric and spatial database.

Schoeman, Paul C. January 2003 (has links)
Leasing of state land under control of the Department of Land Affairs takes place, due to historical reasons, in a manner that is unconformable with the cadastre. The Department (and the State) is obliged to manage its assets efficiently and promote land reform. How can such leases be described spatially, and captured on a land information system? The author argues that it is indeed possible to develop a method, system or convention of spatial description for leased areas unconformable with the cadastre by relating it to the cadastre and capture and maintain data on such areas on a spatially and text-based database. In order to identify relevant best practices, available technology, a review was carried out on methodologies from other countries within the fields of land administration and land information systems, focussing on parcel-based cadastral systems. Fieldwork consisted firstly of interviews with officials and specialists in these fields for more information on the management of leases in the Department and available technology. A full set of active leases (52) from a District Office was acquired for analysis on current spatial descriptions. In a second visit some of these leased areas were surveyed by GPS to construct maps to aid with the development of a convention. Based on this work, the author developed a methodology/convention for indexing and spatial description of unconformable leases, with the current South African cadastre and embedded 21-character land parcel identifier as basis. It was demonstrated that basic technology could be used in the field, supported by an advanced land information system. The value of the convention lies in the fact that it relates the unconformable leases back to the formal cadastre within a land information system. Administration of leases will be more effective. Also that it could be applied to other spheres of land reform and non-parcel based geocoding of centroids indicating occupational or communal rights on land. / Thesis (M.Sc.)- University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2003.

The Columbia River's region: Politics, place and environment in the Pacific Northwest, 1933--present

Vogel, Eve, 1964- 12 1900 (has links)
xiv, 296 p. : ill. A print copy of this title is available through the UO Libraries under the call numbers: KNIGHT F853 .V64 2007 / This dissertation argues that Columbia River management and politics have been shaped ever since the New Deal by a conception of the Columbia River as the defining feature of the Pacific Northwest region. The study examines how that conception was developed, how it became institutionalized within and by a government agency, the Bonneville Power Administration, and what its impacts have been. Drawing on a mix of archival materials, published and unpublished secondary accounts, interviews, and the author's experience working on Columbia River policy, the dissertation shows that the definition of a Columbia River-centered Pacific Northwest was laid out in 1935 by the four-state Pacific Northwest Regional Planning Commission, influenced in part by a "regionalist" ideal of shared social and environmental well-being. It was institutionalized but narrowed into the federal BPA in 1937. Soon, a three-and-a-half-state Pacific Northwest consisting of Washington, Oregon, Idaho and western Montana was being knit together by shared transmission lines and uniformly inexpensive power rates, and by a federal power agency that positioned itself as a regional Chamber of Commerce. Since the Second World War, the Columbia River-centered Pacific Northwest has shaped its collective economic fortunes around exclusive regional access to BPA-provided Columbia River hydropower. But geographically distributed wealth did not end political conflict; private power companies, state governors, Native American tribes, and fish and wildlife agencies have had to be accommodated with distributions of BPA power and money. BPA-centered Columbia River management has through political conflict gradually expanded to serve wider interests, moving closer to the New Deal regionalist ideal. Yet in controversial decisions since 2000, Columbia River managers have chosen to risk wild salmon rather than breach federal Columbia River hydropower dams or allow Pacific Northwest power costs to escalate. They have done this because they have prioritized the most fundamental, and the most regional, Columbia River benefit of all: broadly shared inexpensive power. Understanding the opportunities and constraints of BPA-centered regional Columbia River management is essential in order to meet upcoming Columbia River policy challenges. Hà limitaÃÃes e desafios a vencer. / This study investigates the âA Million Cisterns Programâ (P1MC), considering aspects of comunication and sustainability at the community of Livramento, municipality of IrauÃuba, and the communitity of Araponga, municipality of Itapipoca. A field survey was carried out at both communities, consisting of oriented interviews with 31 famÃlies from Livramento and Araponga, and half-structured interviews with local leaders and members from the following non-governmental organizations: Esplar, Instituto SertÃo, Catavento ComunicaÃÃo e EducaÃÃo Ambiental, CÃritas Regional, and CÃritas Diocesana de Itapipoca.Communities and entities were selected according to the schedule defined for the research, covering the pilot and transition phases of P1MC. The criteria of the number of cisterns built by the community, and of radio station. The theoretical framework was composed around three concepts: complexity, sustainable development and comunication so, the scientific cathegories of era of relationships, environmental rationality, environmental knowledge and cultural mediations were explored. The conclusion is that the P1MC, in its pilot and transition phases, is only the beginning of a process that will requires more time to its maturation. There are limitations and challenges to be won. The sustainability of the perspective of living together with and within the Brazilian semiarid tropiocs, stated by P1MC, depends directly on the pledge of the families. This, what is needed are not only objective actions of cisterns building but, mainly, the absorption of subjetive aspects of the program.
