An exploratory study of the prospects and application of life cycle perspective and ISO 14001 in product design and development as a means of sustainability excellenceWorgu, Stanley, Soroush, Adibi January 2020 (has links)
Product life cycle perspective, a concept emanating from sustainable product development has gradually emerged as one of the key areas in product design and development. Several studies and research have shown the direct co-relationship between product design, development and manufacturing and its impact on our environment and ecosystem. The need to take these environmental factors into consideration is fundamental and highly prioritized in organizations that seeks to minimize the environmental impact of their operations in our ecosystem and if possible redirect these operations to contribute positively to saving the natural ecosystem. In the latest revision of ISO 14001:2015 standard, the term product life cycle perspective (LCP) has now become a fundamental requirement for organizations to fulfill. The requirement specifies the need for life cycle perspectives to be a significant factor during product design and development. However, the practical challenges of continuously integrating life circle analysis in product design is enormous for companies and organizations. This thesis will look at the challenges confronting ISO 14001 certified product manufacturing companies and allied services in implementing product LCP during product development and design and also the interpretations given by auditors from certification companies concerning how companies implement product LCP in relation to the requirements in ISO 14001:2015 at the product design and development stages.

Examining Employee Motivation, Environmental Systems, and Corporate Social Responsibility in Proenvironmental BehaviorWarrick, Brian 01 January 2016 (has links)
The World Health Organization has pointed to climate change as the most significant issue in the 21st century as a result of greenhouse gas emissions and environmental pollution. Organizations are leaning toward corporate social responsibility (CSR) and environmental management systems (EMS) to reverse the current trend; however, these efforts are often ineffective or pooly implemented. The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine the extent to which employees' proenvironmental behavior relates to their protection motivation and organizational identification, as well as their perception and knowledge of the organization's CSR and EMS, respectively. Using social identity as the theoretical framework, this research addressed how organizational and intrapersonal factors influence employees' proenvironmental behavior. One hundred-twenty employees from American-based organizations completed an online survey measuring self-assessed proenvironmental behaviors, among other variables. The results from a Pearson correlation analysis indicated that all of the independent variables had a significant positive relationship with employee proenvironmental behaviors. Multiple regression analysis showed that while each variable was a significant predictor of proenvironmental behaviors, only the economic dimension of CSR (β = .300, p = .014) and the self-efficacy dimension of protection motivation (β = .269, p = .037) significantly contributed to the model. Leaders' use of the findings may lead to positive social change through improved environmental performance in the form of decreased pollution, a more efficient use of natural resources, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions, all toward a more sustainable future.

Úspory v materiálových tocích v návaznosti na EMS výrobních podniků / SAVINGS IN MATERIAL FLOWS IN CONNECTION WITH EMS IN PRODUCTION COMPANIESŠimák, Marek January 2009 (has links)
The subject of this dissertation thesis is „Savings in material flows in connection with EMS in production companies“. The topic of this dissertation thesis is the saving in material flows in connection with EMS in production companies. Sound ecological management in industrial companies is important due to the fact it enhances environment protection and provides the companies concerned with competitive advantage. In many cases it provides for better organization of labor and decrease of wastage and allows for other preventive measures. The aim of this paper is to study the relation between the economical and environmental protection interests of companies operating in selected business sector, the paper examines whether environment protection activities practiced by the companies provide also economical benefit for them. The paper uses literature to analyze relations between EMS, logistics and areas in which savings can be found thus contributing to better results in the fields of environment protection and economy. The gained information together with conducted empirical research is the base used in order to determine the area in which savings could be found. Emphasis is laid on material flows which are studied in selected company active in the field of automotive industry. The analysis is based on the current organizational structure and logistic chain, the analyses focuses mainly on warehousing activities. In the studied company there is charted disconnection point which is located in the reception area in the warehouse. Narrow place was found in the dispatch area of the warehouse, the results of the analyses are the base to be used to express the amount of possible savings. Within the process evaluation, measurements and analysis of working time for each shift have been conducted, since the working load of the concerned shifts presents a risk factor from the perspective of ensuring the in time delivery of materials to the production. Proposal to improve the process is based on the synthesis of acquired facts, it allows for better utilization of working time of warehouse employees and provides extra space for manipulation with materials. When there is extra working load to be handled (extra order from customer) it also provides for the elimination of unnecessary or extra actions connected with operations. The application of the improvement proposal will abolish one of the reasons for non operation time in production, which leads to savings in energy consumption and decreases the amount of emissions. In the final part of the dissertation thesis a summary of solutions to the encountered problems is presented and the possible contribution of this thesis to theory and praxis is described.

ISO 14001 certification - a cost benefit analysis within the South African manufacturing sectorJohnson, Lawton Warren 04 1900 (has links)
Companies in South Africa who have implemented the ISO 14001 environmental management system have claimed that it offered benefits such as an improved environmental performance and a business advantage. However, to date the commercial benefits associated with ISO 14001 in South Africa have not been quantified so the claims of a financial advantage cannot be verified. This study therefore sought to assess the financial benefits accruing to various manufacturing enterprises in Kwa-Zulu Natal, the Eastern Cape and the Western Cape provinces of South Africa who have implemented ISO 14001. There was a particular focus on determining the cost savings and return on investment which resulted from the purchase of „environmentally friendlier‟ raw materials; the reduction of process waste (by the reuse, reduction and recycling of waste) as well as the more efficient use of resources such as electricity, water and fuel. Data was collected by means of a questionnaire survey sent to key decision makers in the selected organisations, as well as follow-up in-depth interviews with selected individuals within each organisation. The results of the study showed that the benefits of ISO 14001 certification included improved environmental awareness among employees; enhanced responsibility for environmental concerns by employees; better data management; reduced operational and production costs; and new income streams linked to re-use and recycling initiatives. Consequently it can be said that the long-term financial benefits justify the relatively high cost; the time intensive obligations and the human resource requirements of ISO 14001 certification. That said, it was also found that smaller companies face relatively more financial hurdles in implementing an EMS, and thus, it is recommended that tax incentives for such firms to implement and EMS be considered. / Environmental Sciences / M. Utvärdering av miljöarbetet vid nybyggnad av butik : miljöledning och avfallshanteringOthén, Anna, Persson, Sofie January 2010 (has links)
According to recent statistics the construction industry is responsible for the largest waste discharges of both dangerous and non-dangerous waste, when disregarding the "non-dangerous" amount of granite waste produced by the mining industry and the waste produced by the pulp and paper industry. Preventive work within waste management is an ongoing practice so to be able to reduce negative environmental effects. One of the most common actions for the companies to take is to separate the different kinds of waste from one another at the construction site. Although by working with the problem in earlier stages of the process a large amount of the waste could already have been reduced. Companies in the construction business that are actively working to decrease environmental impact in their operations often use an EMS (Environmental Management System). By using environmental management as method the company can manage their environmental work so that actions can be taken where they are needed the most. It may though be difficult to adapt the tool for a project-oriented organization such as a construction project. Which effect the environmental work will have does not depend on the fact that the company uses EMS, it depends on how they use it. ICA Real-estate Sweden AB is about to have a new "ICA Kvantum" store built in Avesta, the company has chosen to use an EMS in their environmental work in order to reduce their environmental impact. ICA Real-estate’s environmental review showed that a considerable environmental aspect was waste management in new constructions and rebuilding’s and as a result they have a new environmental goal for the year 2010. The goal was that they would conduct a pilot project within waste management which is currently realized through the construction of the ICA Kvantum store in Avesta. In order to specify how the environmental work should be done in the project and which environmental demands that have been demanded ICA Real-estates has established an environmental program that the entrepreneurs have received and will abide by. Based on the notion from ICA Real-estate concerning the fact that the contractor’s should have high-quality environmental work the company ByggPartner i Dalarna AB was granted the entire contract for the new ICA Kvantum store. ByggPartner also have their own agenda and goals for waste management in the project and are working towards fulfilling them through coordination and planning. The results presented from the investigation that have been done in this report shows that both companies has got many good factors in their environmental work but compared to contemporary research in the area there are still things that could be improved so that the environmental work will be even more successful.

Environmental risk assessment for the electricity sector : a case of Swaziland electricity companyVan Zuydam, Constance Sthembile 06 1900 (has links)
The provision of reliable, safe, affordable and accessible power supply is one of the most important cornerstones for economic development, particularly for third world countries. Notwithstanding all known benefits of power supply, there are environmental risks associated with electricity generation, transmission and usage that need to be identified, assessed and managed. These risks range from minor to major risks such as serious bodily harm and fatalities as well as environmental degradation. In order to minimise and control the operational risks, it is key for the sector to ensure that the risks are identified and assessed using appropriate tools and systems to ensure sustainability and safe work environments. This study explored, improved and designed a tool for environmental risk assessment within Swaziland Electricity Company, (SEC) based on clause 4.3.1 of ISO 14001 (2004), Environmental Management System and Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series, OHSAS 18001 (2007), Occupational Health and Safety System. The previous risk assessment and evaluation tool used in the company ignored existing risk control practices employed and thus did not truly quantify identified risks.
The methodology presented in this study focused on the identification of hazards/aspects and risks associated with processes in electricity generation, transmission and distribution. Risks were evaluated and all possible measures to control the identified risks were suggested.
The top three significant hazards identified include; exposure to live wires, road hazards and the use of uncertified/ defective/wrong equipment and/or machinery whilst the significant impacts were: soil pollution, natural resource degradation/ depletion, loss of flora and fauna and social impacts. The distribution department was observed to have the most environmental risks when compared to the other departments. The developed tool and data could be used as baseline information by other sectors wishing to implement environment and safety systems. It will also continually improve the safety and environmental performance of SEC. / Environmental Science / D. Phil. (Environmental Science)

A plan-do-check-act framework for WEEE and RoHS : a model for implementing WEEE and RoHS by integrating eco-design factors and activities into business operation and strategy.El-Gomla, Randa A.M. January 2011 (has links)
Eco-design is relatively new and fast growing field of research due to its vital importance to the manufacturing industry and its related environmental issues such as reducing waste, and CO2 emission. A major EU programme relating to the environment is the waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive. The (WEEE) directive specifies ten categories and a voltage range which is up to 1.000 volts AC or 1.500volts DC.
The developed framework came for the implementation of Eco-design principles that helps to take into account the adaption of the (WEEE) directive and the restriction of hazard substances (RoHS) used in electrical and electronic equipments. As a result of identify gaps and needs such as a lack of a comprehensive Eco-design framework and the need to integrate it to the normal business operation.
In this research the PDCA framework for Eco-design and WEEE directive will be discussed. The framework will encompass all of the Eco-design¿s implementation and integration factors and activities such as WEEE and RoHS directives, Eco-design management, Environmental legislations, Eco-design tools and considerations. The literature review covers the topic of Eco-design¿s related issues, and WEEE and RoHS directives rules.
Based on comprehensive questionnaire survey of Eco-design, WEEE and RoHS issues and activities among a sample of environmentally aware companies, statistical analysis is carried out using SPSS software. Then the findings of the survey triangulated with the findings of the literature review formed the basis of the design and implementation plan of the proposed framework
