Hållbarhetsarbete: Hur börsnoterade bolag i Sverige förenar lönsamhet och hållbarhet / Sustainability work: How listed companies in Sweden combines profitability and sustainabilityCarlson, Emma, Meunier, Isabelle January 2014 (has links)
Society has in recent decades begun to make more demands on companies to implement sustainability initiatives in their daily operations. However, there are companies that choose to ignore these expectations when they consider their sustainability efforts to have a negative impact on the profitability in form of increased costs, such as restructuring and education. The companies who have not chosen to work sustainably is the companies that do not have a long term view of sustainability efforts, nor knowledge of the benefits that it can lead to, both for the company itself, the environment and society. A study has shown that several listed companies in Sweden still has much to work within terms of sustainability. However, it raises awareness that companies can contribute to a more sustainable development. The research question that becomes pertinent is how listed companies in Sweden combines profitability and sustainability. The purpose of the study is to identify the factors that contribute to a sustainable business without having a negative impact on the profitability. It is a qualitative method used in the study. Qualitative method assumes that the problem should be investigated thoroughly and can also show the overall situation which can be helpful when the survey deals with various sized companies in various industries. The study is based on interviews with sustainability managers in seven companies listed on the Nasdaq OMX and in the lists large, mid or small cap. In support of the study, the problem and the empirical data will be analyzed based on the stakeholder theory and legitimacy theory, as stakeholders and legitimacy can affect the sustainability work and profitability of a company. The study shows that companies need to have a long term view on sustainability work for it to be beneficial for both the environment and the profitability. Education within the organization is fundamental in order to reconcile profitability and sustainability. To get the best effect, sustainability must be integrated into every part of the company. The cost incurred in the implementation of sustainability initiatives is only short term and is also seen as the only negative thing about working sustainably. It has also been shown that there is an expectation from stakeholders that companies are to work sustainably. By fulfilling the expectations, the sustainability work will create legitimacy and trust, which in turn has a positive impact on all stakeholders.

The rise of ecological consciousness in Victoria: the Little Desert dispute, its context and consequencesRobin, L. January 1993 (has links)
The central event in this thesis is the Little Desert dispute, a 1969 controversy about whether land in western Victoria should be developed for agriculture or retained as natural bushland. The Little Desert dispute has lived on in the minds of protagonists and later environmentalists as a cultural icon and a ‘win’ for conservation. This pivotal event provides a framework within which the politics of nature conservation, ecology and land management can be examined. The thesis explores the role of ‘public science’ – science in government, bureaucracy and the community – in this context, as well as tracing the history of the science of ecology in post-war Australia. / The second focus of this thesis is ‘the rise of ecological consciousness’ – the rise of the political relevance of the natural world and emerging concerns about the place of people in nature. This is a multifaceted concept, and includes ‘ecological’ in both its scientific and philosophical guises. ‘Consciousness’ is studied I the individual, collective and political senses. / The Little Desert dispute occurred just as ecological consciousness was beginning to rise in Australia and throughout the western world. The resolution of the dispute through the establishment of the Conservation Council of Victoria and the Land Conservation Council, in 1969 and 1970 respectively, was played out against a backdrop of changing environmental values and systems. The dispute had antecedents in diverse utilitarian, scientific, aesthetic and romantic conservation traditions. It was these values that motivated the leading protagonists, who were conservationists but not environmentalists. However, many environmentalists today look back on the Little Desert dispute as the beginning of the new ‘ecologically conscious’ era. The contribution of earlier conservationists to the environmental movement is often overlooked in environmentalist literature. Through examining closely the role of science and scientists in land management, this thesis explores some of the continuities as well as the discontinuities of the ‘environmental revolution’ in Australia.

This study was conducted with a group of eighteen students from5th grade in a rural school in Palmeira - PR, and objectived to development a guide teaching practices to stimulate the development of environmental responsibility on solid waste. The interest in researching the issue of solid waste in a rural school was built mainly by the deficiencies found in the pedagogical exercise in relation to the subject, as well as believing that the issue of waste in rural areas is more problematic, given the fact that the collection process waste is often lacking and information on the subject are still not very disseminated. The research was interpretive in nature, and for developing strategies to reach the proposed objectives, we used questionnaires and developed pedagogical practices relatingto the subject, which were subsequently evaluated by conducting a scavenger hunt. The main results of this study indicated that the activities were able to sensitize this group and direct them to develop over time the desired environmental responsibility, which represents a positive outcome for the job. Based on the activities carried out and the contest, originated at the end of a guide research activities in which you present the methodology and practices developed. Through this work, it is expected that there is a contribution to promote the dialogue of environmental knowledge among the subjects, be they educators, learners and other professionals that relate to environmental education, and can also provide basis for the adoption attitudes of responsibility and care for the environment.

The present work analyzed the application of the concepts of Creating Shared Value (CSV) by executives of the area of paper packaging in Brazil as a way to improve the competitive advantage of companies in the sector. The concept of Shared Value was devised by Porter and Kramer in 2011 through the Harvard Business Review article called "The Great Idea How to Fix Capitalism." According to Porter and Kramer, the concept of shared value redefines the boundaries of capitalism by better connecting the company's success with the progress of society, this concept opens up many ways to meet the new needs of this society, such as gaining efficiency, creating differentiation and expand markets, making it more competitive. According to the authors, if companies use the same tools that guide their choices in the core business to analyze socio-environmental opportunities, it is no longer a cost or philanthropy to become a source of opportunity and competitive advantage (PORTER, KRAMMER, 2011). In order to carry out the work, a review of available literature on the CSV topic on strategy and competitiveness was carried out, which allowed a better understanding of the concepts for a company to actually put into practice. After reviewing the literature, secondary sources were searched, using data collected through internal and external materials available in Brazil and in the world, such as: magazine publications, videos, presentations in forums, articles, dissertations and academic theses, publications on websites and related news. The secondary data helped to underpin the CSV concept addressed in the literary review, through examples of world-class companies that are already implementing and developing CSV projects and initiatives. Based on data collected through in-depth interviews with executives and sustainability experts, it was verified that the theme is poorly disseminated and also confused with the concepts of sustainability, but indicate the propensity to CSV practices by companies in the sector.
