Sítios líticos no interior paulista: um enfoque regional / Lithic Sites in São Paulo\'s Interior: a Regional Approach

Fabio Grossi dos Santos 18 March 2011 (has links)
This research aims to understand the occupation of hunter-gatherers groups in the central region of São Paulo State, on Tietê River Basin, in its middle course. Through analysis of three lithic sites, two in the Araraquara Region and one in Jaú Region, we have done intra and inter-sites studies, beyond the comparison of results with work done in areas adjacent and also with the specific literature. Emphasizing a regional approach, we sought work issues such as intensity of archaeological material, stratigraphy, the size of sites, the distance between them, how occurred their settlement in landscape, identify the restricted areas activities and the technology of the lithic industry. From these results, we released hypotheses about possible relationships of contact between the sites, how hunter-gatherers groups took advantage of the environment in this region, realizing thus, their mobility in the territory, and the time of occupation.

Inversion d’un modèle de culture pour estimer spatialement les propriétés des sols et améliorer la prédiction de variables agro-environnementales / Inversion of a crop model for estimating spatially the soil properties and improving the prediction of agro-environmental variables

Varella, Hubert Vincent 15 December 2009 (has links)
These models have many parameters and their spatial application require a good knowledge of these parameters, especially of the soil parameters. These parameters can be estimated from soil analysis at different points but this is very costly and requires a lot of experimental work. Nevertheless, observations on crops provided by new techniques like remote sensing or yield monitoring, is a possibility for estimating soil parameters through the inversion of crop models. In my work, the STICS crop model is studied for the wheat and the sugar beet and it includes more than 200 parameters. After a previous work based on a large experimental database for calibrate parameters related to the characteristics of the crop, I started my study with a global sensitivity analysis of the observed variables (leaf area index LAI and absorbed nitrogen QN provided by remote sensing data, and yield at harvest provided by yield monitoring) to the soil parameters, in order to determine which of them have to be estimated. This study was made in different climatic and agronomic conditions and it reveals that 7 soil parameters (4 related to the water and 3 related to the nitrogen) have a clearly influence on the variance of the observed variables and have to be therefore estimated. For estimating these 7 soil parameters, I chose a Bayesian data assimilation method (because I have prior information on these parameters) named Importance Sampling by using observations, on wheat and sugar beet crop, of LAI and QN at various dates and yield at harvest acquired on different climatic and agronomic conditions. The quality of parameter estimation is then determined by comparing the result of parameter estimation with only prio rinformation and the result with the posterior information provided by the Bayesian data assimilation method. The result of the parameter estimation show that the whole set of parameter has a better quality of estimation when observations on sugar beet are assimilated. At the same time, global sensitivity analysis of the observed variables to the 7 soil parameters have been performed, allowing me to build a criterion based on sensitivity indices (provided by the global sensitivity analysis) able to rank the parameters with respect to their quality of estimate. This criterion constitutes an interesting tool for determining which parameters it is possible to estimate to reduce probably the uncertainties on the predictions. The prediction of the crop behaviour when estimating the soil parameters is then studied. Indeed, the quality of prediction of agro-environmental variables of the STICS crop model (yield, protein of the grain and nitrogen balance at harvest) is determined by comparing the result of the prediction using the prior information on the parameters and the result using the posterior information. As for the estimation of soil parameters, the prediction of the variable is made on different climatic and agronomic conditions. According to the result of parameter estimation, assimilating observations on sugar beet lead to a better quality ofprediction of the variables than observations on wheat. It was also shown that the number ofcrop seasons observed and the number of observations improve the quality of the prediction

Adequabilidade ambiental dos biomas brasileiros à ocorrência do lobo-guará (Chrysocyon brachyurus) e efeitos da composição da paisagem em sua ecologia espacial, atividade e movimentação / Environmental Suitability of the Brazilian biomes to the occurrence of the maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) and the effects of landscape structure on its spatial ecology, activity, and movements

Paula, Rogério Cunha de 03 May 2016 (has links)
The maned wolf has an extensive distribution range throughout South America with Brazil holding the largest portion of this area. However, the species is presently under a vulnerable status due to natural habitats alteration especially from farming and ranching. This study aimed to observe in large scale the potential distribution area indicated by favorable environmental attributes and suitable habitats to its presence within the Brazilian biomes and further to investigate how the species respond to the landscape structure, evaluating the effects of human-modified landscapes on its spatial ecology, activity patterns and movements. Species distribution models were generated using Maxent with a database of presence-only locations from 2000 though 2015, of the Cerrado (Ce), Pantanal (Pa), the Atlantic Forest (AF), and the Pampas (Pp) biomes, and eleven uncorrelated environmental variables (topographic, climatic, and landscape-based). As for the spatial ecology, activity and movement analysis, GPS-based telemetry locations were used from animals inhabiting protected (PAs) and disturbed areas (DAs). Home range (HR) analysis was performed using the AKDE estimator and then associated with the landscape-classified image. The distribution models for the maned wolf showed a potential distribution area of 78% of the total biomes range. Despite the high proportion of suitable areas (Ce, 90%; Pa, 93%; AF, 65%, and Pp, 6%), only a small percentage of the biomes (4.4% for Ce and 4.7% for AF) presented values over 50% suitable. Concerning the attributes that favor its presence, the altitude (for all the biomes), the precipitation (Ce and Pa), the temperature differences and land use (AF and Pp) were the most important. At the local scale, maned wolves showed HR sizes (average) with significant differences (p<0.01) between the 90Km2 (PA) and 41Km2 (DA) with HR size directly related to the proportion of natural areas. Although the general activity patterns were not considerably different between PA and DA, the resting periods of DA\'s animals (46% of the day) were significantly different (p<0.01) than the period of PA\'s wolves (46% of the day). Animals did not show changes on the daily movement patterns, accounting with 14km in general average and 1km of average step length (no major differences as well). The variation on the step length was related to the association of the diversity of contacts between landscape classes with the proportion of natural classes at each step (as bigger the variable values, bigger the step). As a consequence of smaller steps, constancy of movement decreases. Considering the results, the AF and Pa outstand as very important biomes, however the Ce was indicated as the most suitable biome. Furthermore, the research indicated signs that the HR structure and the landscape use, besides the activity patterns and the movement are affected by altered landscapes. This might compromise the population viability, interfering directly on its presence in an area and affecting the species distribution. Thus, a proper land use management aiming the recovering of degraded habitats is an important strategy tor the maned wolf conservation, so the species can long last survive across the Brazilian biomes.

The Spatial Relationship Between Septic System Failure and Environmental Factors in Washington Township, Marion County, Indiana

Hanson, Brian L. 04 1900 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Underground septic systems thrive or fail based on the relationship with their local environment. This paper explores ways environmental variables such as soil type, tree roots, degree of slope, and impervious surfaces affect on-site wastewater treatment systems. It also discusses the effects each of these variables may have on a septic system, and the resulting impact a compromised system may have on the surrounding environment. This research focuses on an approximately 20 square mile area of central Washington Township in Marion County, Indiana. This area of central Indiana contains a large septic system owning population in a sampling of different environments such as wooded areas, hilly areas, and a variety of different soil types.

Effects of Financial Supervision Regimes on Commercial Banks’ Profit Efficiency in 12 Asian Countries

Huang, Kuo Jui Unknown Date (has links)
The effects of degrees of financial supervision on performance of commercial banks have long been important issues and drawn much attention to academic researchers and government authorities. This study applies the stochastic meta-profit frontier, recently developed by Huang, Huang, and Liu (2014), to estimate and compare profit efficiencies of commercial banks from 12 Asian countries, i.e., Mainland China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and United Arab Emirates. We divide the sample countries into two groups, i.e., developing and developed countries. This enables us to further investigate the effects of different supervisory systems, enforced by central banks (CB) and supervisory authorities, on commercial banks’ profit efficiencies, as well as to make a suggestion about the optimal supervision regimes in the area. Note that a set of supervisory indices are considered as environmental variables that explain profit inefficiency. Using the two-stage estimation procedure, the empirical results are summarized as follows. First, it is found that bank’s profit efficiency decreases with the increase in a CB’s supervision sectors. Second, the unification of supervisory authority has positive effect on bank’s profit efficiency. Third, the more independent is the CB, the less profit efficient the commercial bank is. Fourth, banks in the group of developed countries are found to have higher technology gap ratios and meta-profit efficiencies than those in the group of developing countries, as expected. Fifth and finally, Japan and South Korea has the highest and the lowest level of meta-profit efficiency, respectively. Evidence is found that if an average commercial bank were adopting the best technology, it can earn roughly 41.9% to 75% more profits than otherwise.
