Changing the system, not the seeker: how do investment organizations’ evaluation practices shape the demographic diversity of innovators funded?Miller, Amisha 30 May 2023 (has links)
Female and minority innovators raise fewer resources from investors for novel ideas, even when their ventures are similar or identical to those of all white male teams. This disparity is concerning for investors aiming to identify value-creating opportunities. Evaluating the potential of innovation requires making decisions on innovators and their ideas in conditions of uncertainty where information on past performance is unavailable. Under these conditions, evaluators typically rely on easily-accessible ascriptive characteristics to make decisions – which perpetuates demographic disparities in innovation contexts. Extant research has examined mitigation strategies focused on the resource-seeker – how resource-seekers can pitch their ideas to overcome investor biases. Few have examined the system itself: how investment organizations’ collective evaluation processes shape the diversity of founders that receive venture investment. How do the evaluation processes investment organizations use shape the demographic diversity of innovators funded?
To examine this overarching question, I conducted field research and two field experiments with one global VC fund/accelerator hybrid organization, and its broad, global, co-investor network across different phases. I produced a dataset of over 170 hours of observational data, interviews with 98 investors, and experimental data with close to 3,000 investment decisions on startups in which $320,000 was invested. Leveraging this data, I identified moments in investment organizations’ evaluation processes that inhibited commensuration across startups, and produced demographic disparities in collective investment decisions. I theorize the importance of the role of investor inquiry during evaluation, and test how changes to organizations’ evaluation templates can affect both individual investor’s processes of inquiry and real investment decisions. I identified a causal link between tiny tweaks to investment organizations’ evaluation templates and increased investments in startups with female founders.
Rather than focus on how to prepare startups for evaluation, which can produce short-term outcomes that may be only relevant to a specific set of investors, my research explores a more systemic question: how can organizations change their systems of evaluation? These contributions are relevant not to only entrepreneurship theory and practice, but also to organizational scholars interested in cultivating diversity, equity and inclusion. I unpack the role that organizations play in designing, executing and perpetuating systems that evaluate innovators heterogeneously, based on their demographic characteristics. Teacher self-efficacy refers to teachers&rsquo / belief in their abilities to perform an action. In the present study, a new scale was developed to measure teacher self-efficacy beliefs toward measurement and evaluation practices, called &ldquo / Teacher Self-Efficacy toward Measurement and Evaluation Practices Scale&rdquo / (TEMES). The purpose of this study was to test a model of relationships among teacher self-efficacy toward measurement and evaluation practices, teachers&rsquo / sense of efficacy, year in teaching, and frequency of using traditional and alternative measurement and evaluation tools. Three hundred ninety-four teachers participated in the study. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA), Canonical Correlation Analysis, and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) were conducted to answer the research questions.
CFA provided evidence for five-factor structure of the TEMES. Cronbach&rsquo / s alpha coefficients of these five factors were satisfactory, ranging from .76 to .87. Teachers reported more frequent use of traditional measurement and evaluation tools than alternative tools. Separate MANOVAs yielded non-significant effect of gender on the factors of TEMES, but of teaching level. In addition, findings of canonical correlation analysis indicated that factors of TEMES were correlated with factors of Turkish teachers&rsquo / sense of efficacy scale (TTSES). Results of the SEM indicated that teacher self-efficacy toward measurement and evaluation practices was positively correlated with frequency of using traditional and alternative measurement and evaluation tools. Year of teaching was found to be a non-significant predictor of teachers&rsquo / sense of efficacy, teacher self-efficacy toward measurement and evaluation practices, and frequency of using traditional and alternative measurement and evaluation tools.

This thesis aimed to gain an in-depth understanding of effective program evaluation frameworks, particularly in the agriculture sector. Specifically, the analysis was focused on assessing monitoring and evaluation of public and private sector projects to assist the British Columbia Investment Agriculture Foundation (IAF), the client for this thesis, in identifying smart practices as a way to support constant improvement in their organization. This research involved conducting a literature review of the most recent and relevant literature on program evaluation, particularly works that related to nonprofit organizations in the agriculture sector, interviewing IAF staff, developing a jurisdictional scan of program evaluation frameworks in the Netherlands and New Zealand, and conducting a review of existing IAF evaluation documents to identify and discuss key themes for an effective program evaluation framework and provide examples of smart evaluation practices that may be adapted by IAF. The recommendations include integrating formative and summative evaluation practices, developing targeted programs with well-defined key performance indicators (where possible), and capitalizing on data visualization software for monitoring and reporting on project goals in real-time. / Graduate

Esta pesquisa objetivou compreender o itinerário terapêutico de quatro mulheres com câncer de mama, no que concerne à trajetória assistencial na busca por cuidado no SUS de Volta Redonda, procurando perceber em que medida elas tiveram suas necessidades, relacionadas ao processo de adoecimento, atendidas pelos serviços de saúde, tendo como eixo norteador a integralidade em saúde. O objeto do estudo foi construído a partir do entendimento do câncer de mama como um problema de saúde pública, da contextualização do programa de controle do câncer de mama e da reflexão sobre avaliação, integralidade e itinerários terapêuticos como prática avaliativa no campo da saúde. Como trajetória metodológica, para o alcance dos objetivos propostos, a opção foi desenvolver um estudo de natureza qualitativa, empregando a história de vida como abordagem central. Nesta perspectiva, para o trabalho investigativo e interação com as quatro mulheres, visando à narrativa de suas experiências, foi utilizada a técnica de
entrevista aberta na coleta de dados, com ênfase na etapa da vida após a descoberta do câncer de mama e a busca de cuidado nos serviços de saúde. As entrevistas, complementadas pelos dados dos prontuários e do diário de campo, constituíram- se como o material empírico para proceder às análises, visando,
sobretudo, a apreender os atributos de integralidade na dimensão da organização dos serviços de saúde e nos conhecimentos e práticas dos profissionais de saúde.
Também se buscou analisar o cumprimento dos objetivos do Programa Nacional de Controle do Câncer de Mama, em Volta Redonda, tendo em vista que as ações aí propostas representam um conjunto de prescrições para reversão da atual situação da doença no país. Pode-se evidenciar, nas análises, que o cuidado em saúde dedicado a essas mulheres com câncer de mama está muito distante do princípio da integralidade que nos orienta e que defendemos como bandeira de luta. As methodological trajectory, so as to meet the objectives, we developed a qualitative study whose main approach was life history. In this perspective, the investigative work and interaction with these four women, aiming to report their
experiences, used the open interview for data collection, focusing on their lives after the breast cancer and the search for health care. The interviews, complemented by medical records and field work notes, were the empirical material for the analysis, aiming mostly to apprehend the attributes of integral care in the dimension of health care services organization and knowledge and practice of health professional. We also tried to analyze whether the objectives of the National Program Breast Cancer Control, in Volta Redonda, have been met, considering that it proposes actions to reverse the present situation of breast cancer in Brazil. According to the analyses, health care for women with breast cancer is far from the integral care principle, which guides us and that we defend. In this sense, the narratives give us hints that allow us to state that health care services and professionals are not organized to protect these women, to ensure the correct answers for their needs, based on the integral care principle and on rights and values in defense of human life. We can notice a delay in diagnosis and treatment, with difficult access to several procedures involved in this care e.g., mammography, histopathological results and breast surgery. Breast clinical examination is not performed or valued in primary care services, and practices in specialized units remain centered in medical care, focused on the
disease, and there is no multi-professional staff to meet the psychological, social and other needs. Moreover, there was a lack of reference services for breast reconstruction, essential in a integral assistance. We conclude it is fundamental that
local managers re-think about services and practices organization in the several Volta Redonda SUS levels, providing care for women with breast cancer and supporting their families, within the perspective of integral care and health rights.
Finally, this study defends the therapeutical itinerary as important health care evaluation practice, friendly to integral care, and that can be incorporated to the SUS routine.

schooling repetition and drop out, the teacher training for evaluating the students
apprenticeship was investigated. The perspective of the work was understanding the
students qualifications on a Pedagogy course. The work had as references the
aspects related to evaluation theoretical qualifications, the teachers practices and
the procedures that the future teacher aims to develop.
It was selected for the research authors whose studies are related to
apprenticeship evaluation and teacher training as: NÓVOA (1991), CANDAU (1996),
DEMO (1999), PERRENOUD (1999), RODRIGUES (1999), SACRISTÁN (2000),
BONNIOL (2001), CAPPELLETTI (2001), HADJI (2001), LIBÂNEO (2001), SAUL
(2001), VIAL (2001), IMBERNÓN (2002), FRANCO (2004), WORTHEN (2004), and
others.
The research of how evaluation training is taken, in ten schools, was made
through semi-structured interviews. The target group of this research was teachers
specialized in evaluation-related subjects, and their students, who were on the last
course year of Pedagogy.
It was encountered that teachers evaluation qualifications were precarious
due to the division of teaching and evaluation in different subjects, the dichotomy of
theoretical and practical training and the lack of thinking over current themes directly
related to evaluation, like prolonged progression.
Some teachers have innovated through changing strategies and procedures.
Nevertheless, innovating isn t enough. It is necessary to innovate the basic elements
and the attitudes of how assessment is understood.
The thesis was based in information empirically obtained, and it resulted in
considerations focused on rethinking the teacher training on apprenticeship
evaluation / Tendo como foco a avaliação da aprendizagem como um dos fatores da
repetência e da evasão escolar essa pesquisa investigou questões relacionadas à
formação inicial do docente em avaliação educacional. Apresentou como perspectiva
a compreensão da formação dada aos alunos nos cursos de Pedagogia tendo como
referência aspectos relacionados ao desenvolvimento da formação teórica em
avaliação, às práticas desenvolvidas pelo professor e procedimentos que o futuro
docente pretende desenvolver.
A exploração da perspectiva teórica fez-se através da seleção de autores
cujos estudos vinculam-se à avaliação da aprendizagem ou a formação docente
como: NÓVOA (1991), CANDAU (1996), DEMO (1999), PERRENOUD (1999),
RODRIGUES (1999), SACRISTÁN (2000), BONNIOL (2001), CAPPELLETTI (2001),
HADJI (2001), LIBÂNEO (2001), SAUL (2001), VIAL (2001), IMBERNÓN (2002),
FRANCO (2004), WORTHEN (2004), entre outros.
A investigação de como se processava a formação em avaliação, nas dez
instituições de ensino participantes desta pesquisa, teve como base a pesquisa
qualitativa e deu-se por meio da entrevista semi-estruturada. Os sujeitos dessa
investigação foram professores que ministravam disciplinas relacionadas à
avaliação, e alunos, desses professores, que freqüentavam o último ano do curso de
Pedagogia.
Constatou-se que a formação docente em avaliação é precária em
decorrência da segmentação entre ensino e avaliação como objetos distintos, da
dicotomia teoria e prática, da ausência de reflexões sobre temas atuais que
possuem implicações diretas com a avaliação, como a progressão continuada.
Alguns docentes investiram em inovações na prática avaliativa através de
mudanças nas estratégias e procedimentos. Porém, não basta inovar com
procedimentos apenas. É preciso inovar nos fundamentos, nas atitudes, na forma
como se compreende a avaliação.
A partir das informações obtidas do empírico, contrapostas a teoria teceu-se
algumas considerações voltadas ao repensar da formação docente em avaliação da
aprendizagem

The problem of this research emphasizes the students' perception about the assessment practices developed in the virtual environment for teaching and learning (AVEA), and examines the concept underlying the evaluative processes in the Course of Technology in Public Administration from UAB - IFSC. The objective is to conduct a literature review on the evaluation of learning in distance education online, through reference Cool & Monereo; Moran; Belloni; Borges; Alves; Peters; Ramal; Santos; Levy, among other authors of reference, identifying the theoretical approaches in the assessment of learning in all official documents, textbooks and teaching institution surveyed, identifying the learning effect of assessment practices in the course, its objectives and instruments in time and distance, and discuss the changes and continuities identified in assessment practices, specific to distance education online. The methodology was used to investigate the case study, outlining thus a quantitative and qualitative research, respecting the scientific principles that guide them. The data collection instrument used was an online questionnaire analyzed in similar thematic groupings. 84 students participated in this survey course on screen. Before examining the perceptions of students, online assessment practices are characterized in a time of transition. Despite the use of some evaluative instruments considered innovative, such as the Forum, the online evaluation practices are still more to a service model and a traditional culture of evaluation, in response to the emerging form of teaching and learning in digital times / O presente trabalho apresenta os resultados de uma investigação acerca das práticas avaliativas que acontecem no ambiente virtual de aprendizagem, na Educação a Distância online. A problemática desta pesquisa salienta a percepção dos alunos quanto às práticas avaliativas desenvolvidas no ambiente virtual de ensino e aprendizagem (AVEA), e analisa a concepção que fundamenta os processos avaliativos no Curso Superior de Tecnologia em Gestão Pública da UAB IFSC.
