Expeditionen : ett utforskande av Dominick Argentos sångcykel The Andrée ExpeditionRydén, Viktor January 2016 (has links)
Dominick Argento

The Andrée Expedition

Viktor Rydén, baryton

Joakim Martinsen, piano

Outfacing the storm : songs from the Imperial Trans-Antarctic ExpeditionWayman, Abraham Mark 07 November 2014 (has links)
Outfacing the Storm is a song cycle that tells the story of the spectacular failure-turned-triumph of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. Led by Sir Ernest Shackleton, the Expedition was an attempt to trek overland across the whole of the Antarctic continent. Shackleton’s ship, the Endurance, launched from England in August of 1914 with twenty-eight men. Within weeks of entering the polar latitudes, ice ensnared the ship. The Endurance remained stuck fast until the spring breakup crushed its hull, and it sank in November of 1915. The crew struck out for civilization, and, after six months and over one thousand miles of travel by foot, by ice-drift, and by lifeboat, they returned home alive. The Expedition’s safe return was heavily credited by its crew to Shackleton himself. A man of intense character, burning passion, and unfailing determination, Shackleton put the needs of his crew ahead of all else. His individual dedication to each member of the voyage was an inspiration to each. Ernest Shackleton, however, was a private man. He hid his own concerns from all except those closest to him. During the Expedition, he feared for the well-being of the crew. In the largest sense, he feared failure. Shackleton was only ever content while at sea. “Sometimes,” he wrote to his wife, “I think I am no good at anything but being away in the wilds… I grow restless and feel any part of youth is slipping away from me and that nothing matters… I feel I am no use to anyone unless I am outfacing the storm in wild lands.” This song cycle tells the tale of the Expedition through Shackleton’s eyes. The cycle is in eleven movements—nine recounting the story, plus a prologue and epilogue. All of the text is Shackleton’s own. The nine middle movements are taken from Shackleton’s memoir about the voyage, South. The prologue and epilogue are taken, respectively, from an interview and the above letter. / Music, Butler School of / text

A Comparison of Democracies: How Democratic Rhetoric and Values Have Changed from Ancient Athens to the Modern United StatesWattis, Alexandra 01 January 2017 (has links)
This study will explore the similarities and differences between Alcibiades and Nicias’ speeches to the Athenian Assembly in 415 BC and Secretary Hillary Clinton and President Donald J. Trump’s first presidential debate in 2016. The ancient speeches were regarding the Sicilian Expedition, while the modern speeches focused on each candidates’ foreign policy plan regarding Syria and the Islamic State (IS). Despite the near 2,500-year difference between these two democracies, there are striking similarities between the ways their governments are structured as well as the values they uphold. I explore the significance of the fact that the Athenians and the modern-day Americans have two ostensibly functioning democracies yet the candidates whom they elected and the subsequent results were disadvantageous for the long-term sustainability of their countries. I will look at the differences between the expectations of the democratic institutions and what the outcomes of the debates were. Additionally, I compare the differences between the Athenian democracy and the American democracy.

Obraz conquistadora Lopeho de Aguirre v hispánské literatuře / Image of the conquistador Lope de Aguirre in Hispanic LiteratureKutová, Jaroslava January 2013 (has links)
This diploma thesis studies the transformation of the image of conquistador Lope de Aguirre in selected pieces of Hispanic literature. The introductory compilation explains the historical context of the colonial background in which Aguirre's rebellion took place. Some historical facts about Aguirre himself are added as well. The analytical part of this thesis concentrates on Aguirre's image in literature written in Spanish, from the second half of the 16th century till present. The four hundred year development of a historical persona into a myth is very briefly captured. Given the amount of possible research samples we choose to primarily focus on Aguirre's image in 16th century chronicles written by witnesses, namely the chronicle of Francisco Vázquez. Secondarily, we also look into the image created by post-boom writers in the seventies in the 20th century, with special consideration of Abel Posse's novel Daimón. As a result, we can make a limited comparison between one of the very first and one of the very last literary images of Aguirre. Based upon these images we also try to deduce the influence of contemporary values and mentality on the creation of said images.

Os diários de Langsdorff: prelúdios paisagísticos / Diaries of Langsdorff: landscaped preludesLuvizotto, Rodrigo 21 November 2012 (has links)
We analyse in this research programme the field diaries of Georg Heinrich von Lagnsdorff. He was a Prussian naturalist, physician, diplomat and leader of a Russian scientific expedition launched in Brazil in the first half of the 19th century. From 1824 to 1829, Langsdorff went on a long scientific expedition into the interior of Brazil, travelling from Rio de Janeiro to Amazonas, including Minas Gerais, São Paulo and Mato Grosso. Langsdorffs diaries constitute an unparalleled treasure about Brazil. Mainly because of the exploratory character of the journey, the diaries of the expedition leader act as a privileged spot in the constitution of geographic landscapes. As a result, a careful analysis was performed through the interdisciplinary comparison of such diaries. For this reason, we brought together the studies of geographic landscapes and the theoretical parameters of French semiotics, having the landscape study as a convergence point. We closely scrutinized the symbolic representations of the landscapes that emerged from Langsdorffs accounts, and concluded that such representations comprise legacies of sensitive and shrewd records from different parts of the Brazilian territory. Finally, we have observed that those representations made a significant contribution towards the development of a national identity.

General Alonso de León’s Expedition Diaries into Texas (1686-1690): A Linguistic Analysis of the Spanish Manuscripts with Semi-paleographic Transcriptions and English TranslationsNorris, Lola 1957- 14 March 2013 (has links)
From 1686 to 1690, General Alonso de León led five military expeditions from Northern
New Spain into modern-day Texas in search of French intruders who had breached Spanish
sovereignty and settled on lands claimed by the Spanish Crown. His first two exploratory
journeys were unsuccessful, but on the third expedition, he discovered a Frenchman living
among Coahuiltec Indians across the Río Grande. In 1689, the fourth expedition finally led to the
discovery of La Salle’s ill-fated colony and fort on the Texas Coast and to the repatriation of two
of the French survivors. On his fifth and final expedition, De León established the first Spanish
mission among the Hasinai Indians of East Texas and rescued several French children who had
been abducted by the Karankawa.
Through archival research, I have identified sixteen manuscript copies of De León’s
meticulously kept expedition diaries. These documents form a distinct corpus and hold major
importance for early Texas scholarship. Several of these manuscripts, but not all, have been
known to historians and have been addressed in the literature. However, never before have all
sixteen manuscripts been studied as an interconnected body of work and submitted to philological treatment. In this interdisciplinary study, I transcribe, translate, and analyze the
diaries from two different perspectives: linguistic and historical.
The linguistic analysis examines the most salient phonological, morphosyntactic, and
lexical phenomena attested in the documents. This synchronic study provides a snapshot of the
Spanish language as it was used in Northern Mexico and Texas at the end of the 17th century. An
in-depth examination discovers both conservative traits and linguistic innovations and
contributes to the history of American Spanish. The historical analysis reveals that frequent
misreadings, misinterpretations, and mistranslations of the Spanish source documents have led to
substantial factual errors which have misinformed historical interpretation for more than a
century. Thus, I have produced new, faithful, annotated English translations based on the
manuscript archetypes to address historical misconceptions and present a more accurate
interpretation of the historical events as they actually occurred.
