Tensile and fracture behaviour of isotropic and die-drawn polypropylene-clay nanocomposites. Compounding, processing, characterization and mechanical properties of isotropic and die-drawn polypropylene/clay/polypropylene maleic anhydride composites

As a preliminary starting point for the present study, physical and mechanical properties of polypropylene nanocomposites (PPNCs) for samples received from Queen's University Belfast have been evaluated. Subsequently, polymer/clay nanocomposite material has been produced at Bradford. Mixing and processing routes have been explored, and mechanical properties for the different compounded samples have been studied. Clay intercalation structure has received particular attention to support the ultimate objective of optimising tensile and fracture behaviour of isotropic and die-drawn PPNCs. Solid-state molecular orientation has been introduced to PPNCs by the die-drawing process. Tensile stress-strain measurements with video-extensometry and tensile fracture of double edge-notched tensile specimens have been used to evaluate the Young¿s modulus at three different strain rates and the total work of fracture toughness at three different notch lengths. The polymer composite was analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, polarizing optical microscopy, wide angle x-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. 3% and 5% clay systems at various compatibilizer (PPMA) loadings were prepared by three different mixing routes for the isotropic sheets, produced by compression moulding, and tensile bars, produced by injection moulding process. Die-drawn oriented tensile bars were drawn to draw ratio of 2, 3 and 4. The results from the Queen's University Belfast samples showed a decrement in tensile strength at yield. This might be explained by poor bonding, which refers to poor dispersion. Voids that can be supported by intercalated PP/clay phases might be responsible for improvement of elongation at break. The use of PPMA and an intensive mixing regime with a two-step master batch process overcame the compatibility issue and achieved around 40% and 50% increase in modulus for 3% and 5% clay systems respectively. This improvement of the two systems was reduced after drawing to around 15% and 25% compared with drawn PP. The work of fracture is increased either by adding nanoclay or by drawing to low draw ratio, or both. At moderate and high draw ratios, PPNCs may undergo either an increase in the size of microvoids at low clay loading or coalescence of microvoids at high clay loading, eventually leading to an earlier failure than with neat PP. The adoption of PPMA loading using an appropriate mixing route and clay loading can create a balance between the PPMA stiffness effect and the degree of bonding between clay particles and isotropic or oriented polymer molecules. Spherulites size, d-spacing of silicate layers, and nanoparticles distribution of intercalated microtactoids with possible semi-exfoliated particles have been suggested to optimize the final PPNCs property. / SABIC

Analysis of a Multi-Aquifer System in the Southern Coastal Plain of Virginia by Trial and Error Model Calibration to Observed Land Subsidence

The Coastal Plain in the southern Chesapeake Bay area is becoming increasingly susceptible to nuisance flooding as a result of the combination of sea-level rise and land subsidence associated with aquifer compaction from excessive groundwater pumping. Detailed time-series of cumulative compaction data (land subsidence) from the three U.S. Geological Survey deployed extensometers in the regions, along with cyclical piezometer data, reflect the nature of the complex multi-aquifer/aquitard system in the Coastal Plain. Franklin, Virginia and Suffolk, Virginia extensometers were deactivated in 1995 and were reactivated in 2016 along with the addition of a high-sensitivity borehole extensometer in Nansemond, Virginia in collaboration with the Hampton Roads Sanitation District as a part of the Sustainable Water Initiative for Tomorrow (SWIFT). Yearly compaction rates estimated from the reactivated extensometers are -3.3 mm/year, 15.6 mm/year, and -20.7 mm/year in Franklin, Suffolk, and Nansemond, Virginia respectively. One-dimensional vertical compaction modeling is utilized to estimate the total compaction and differentiate which fine-grained confining units or aquifer interbeds are contributing most to total compaction historically and presently. Additionally, properties of the system can be estimated including the elastic specific storage of the aquitards and aquifers and the inelastic storage of the aquitards. The total cumulative change in aquifer system thickness estimated by the MODFLOW subsidence package can be compared to the observed total cumulative change in aquifer system thickness at each site for validation of hypothesis about the dynamics of the aquifer system to known changes in stress. A Pressão intracraniana (PIC) é um dos principais parâmetros fisiológicos em animais e humanos e sua morfologia é extremamente importante. Entretanto, todos os métodos de monitoramento existentes no mercado são invasivos, existindo uma ampla demanda por sistemas não invasivos, expandindo assim o campo de pesquisas acerca desse importante parâmetro neurológico, que só não é melhor estudado devido a forma invasiva de ser monitorado. A motivação é fazer com que o monitoramento da PIC seja tão comum e tão essencial quanto é hoje o monitoramento da pressão arterial, facilitando o diagnóstico e até prognóstico de diversas doenças. Este trabalho analisa e implementa melhorias de um sistema não invasivo de monitoramento da pressão intracraniana, baseado em extensometria. Um dos objetivos, no que tange o desenvolvimento do produto, é analisar o equipamento como um todo - Sensor, Hardware, Firmware e Software - e propor melhorias a partir dos testes realizados. Os testes realizados In vivo mostraram uma boa correlação do sinal com um sistema Gold Stardard, evidenciando o potencial promissor do método. / The intracranial pressure (ICP) is one of the main physiological parameters in animals and humans and its morphology is extremely important. However, all monitoring methods available in the market are invasive and there is a large demand for non-invasive systems, thus expanding the scope of research on this important neurological parameter, that just is not further studied because of the invasive method of monitoring. The motivation is to make monitoring the ICP as common and as essential, as monitoring the blood pressure is nowadays, facilitating diagnosis and even prognosis of various diseases. This work analyzes and implements improvements in a non-invasive intracranial pressure monitoring system based on extensometer. One of the goals, regarding product development, is to analyze the unit as a whole- Sensor, Hardware, Firmware and Software- and propose improvements from the tests. The in vivo tests showed a good correlation with a Gold Stardard system signal showing the promising potential of the method.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This study was developed with the objective to determinate the longitudinal deformations (DRL) resulting from growth stresses in standing and living trees in different clones of Eucalyptus spp. To do this, 12 clones of 9 years-old Eucalyptus spp., were selected, through annual increment means, which were planted at a spacing of 3.0 x 2.7 m. For measurements the variables of this research, 12 trees of each clone were selected, which the some variables were measured: basic density, bark thickness, diameter and total height. The measurements of longitudinal residual strain (DRL) were made in living trees with the extensometer (Growth Strain Gauge) using the CIRADForêt method. The readings were taken at four locations around the trunk of the tree following the guidance of planting (row, between rows). The measurements in the presence of winds were avoid, because with the movement of the tree, the support forces swing inside the trunk, changing the value recorded on the device. For levels of DRL, the results obtained in the study indicated that the clones had large variations between each other, and these had an average value considered high when compared with the literature. The clone 8 produced the lowest levels of deformation and it was considered an excellent genetic material. The clone 1 obtained the highest values of DRL. DRL variation occurred along the circumference of the tree trunk, and it was more pronounced on the east position. Analyzing the correlations among variables, it was found that the DRL was significantly correlated with the bark thickness, diameter and volume of standing tree. Basic density and height didn t have influence on the longitudinal residual strain. Some regression models were adjusted for DRL according to the bark thickness, diameter, height and volume to explain the behavior of this variable for each clone. Just for the basic density was not possible to set a significant model. / O presente estudo foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de determinar as deformações residuais longitudinais (DRL), decorrentes das tensões de crescimento em árvores em pé e vivas de diferentes clones de Eucalyptus spp. Para tanto, foram selecionados 12 clones do gênero Eucalyptus com 9 anos de idade, por meio da área basal (G), sendo, estes, plantados em um espaçamento 3,0 x 2,7 m . Para as medições das variáveis do estudo, foram selecionadas 12 árvores de cada clone, onde foram medidas as variáveis de densidade básica (DB), espessura de casca (EC), diâmetro a altura do peito (DAP) e altura total (H). As medições das deformações residuais longitudinais foram realizadas, em árvores vivas, com o auxílio do extensômetro (Growth Strain Gauge), pelo método CIRAD-Fôret. As leituras foram realizadas em quatro posições ao redor do tronco da árvore, seguindo a orientação do plantio (linha, entre linha). Evitou-se realizar as medições das DRL na presença de ventos, uma vez que, com o movimento da árvore, as forças de sustentação oscilam dentro do tronco, alterando o valor registrado no aparelho. Em relação aos níveis das DRL, os resultados obtidos no estudo indicaram que os clones apresentaram grande variações entre si, obtendo um valor médio considerado elevado quando comparado com a literatura. O clone 8 se destacou por apresentar os menores níveis de deformação, sendo considerado um ótimo material para programas de melhoramento genético. Já o clone 1, apresentou os maiores valores das DRL. Ocorreram variações das DRL, ao longo da circunferência do tronco das árvores, sendo mais acentuada na linha referente à posição Leste. Analisando as correlações entre as variáveis, verificou-se que as DRL apresentou correlações significativas com a EC, DAP e o volume da árvore em pé (VOL). A DB e H não se mostraram influentes sobre a deformação residual longitudinal. Para a DRL, foram ajustados modelos de regressão em função da EC, DAP, H e VOL para explicar o comportamento dessa variável para cada clone. Apenas para a DB não foi possível ajustar um modelo significativo.

[pt] A construção de Barragens de Enrocamento no Brasil tem se desenvolvido nas últimas décadas, por ser uma solução adequada para regiões onde há falta de solos finos e grande volume de escavações obrigatórias em rocha. Este desenvolvimento está relacionado tanto à quantidade de barragens construídas quanto ao incremento da altura das mesmas. A construção de protótipos de instrumentos para medição de deslocamentos neste tipo de barragem é de fundamental importância. Com a simulação das leituras em laboratório, torna-se possível implementar modificações no projeto, na construção, na instalação e na operação destes instrumentos, disponibilizando-se leituras mais acuradas e precisas, obtendo-se maior confiabilidade nos dados e, assim, informações mais consistentes sobre o comportamento das barragens. Além da elaboração de uma abrangente revisão bibliográfica sobre instrumentação geotécnica, foram estudados dois protótipos de instrumentos de medidas de deslocamento, Medidor Hidrostático de Recalques e Extensômetro Horizontal de Hastes Múltiplas. Ambos desenvolvidos no Laboratório de Engenharia Civil de Furnas, em Aparecida de Goiânia, estado de Goiás. Os resultados obtidos permitirão modificações na construção e instalação destes instrumentos. / [en] The number and height of rockfill dams in Brazil has been steadily growing, because rockfills constitute an adequate solution when the project requires a large volume of rock excavation and there is a lack of fine grained soils in the region. The development of new equipment for measuring displacements in these dams is of fundamental importance. Testing prototypes in the laboratory, under simulated field conditions, allows the researcher to implement modifications in the design characteristics and installation procedures for the instrument. As a result, measurements with higher accuracy and reliability are obtained and, consequently, higher safety for the dams. A comprehensive review of the literature on geotechnical instrumentation is presented. Two prototypes of displacement measuring devices have been studied and tested: a hydrostatic displacement cell and a multiple rods horizontal extensometer. Both were constructed and tested in the Civil Engineering Laboratory of Furnas, in Goiás, Brazil. The results and conclusions obtained will result in important modifications in the design and installation details of these instruments.

Virtual Extensometer Analysis of Martensite Band Nucleation, Growth, and Strain Softening in Pseudoelastic NiTi Subjected to Different Load Cases

Pseudoelastic NiTi shape memory alloys exhibit different stress–strain curves and modes of deformation in tension vs. compression. We have recently shown that under a combination of compression and shear, heterogeneous deformation can occur. In the present study, we use digital image correlation to systematically analyze how characteristic features of the nominally uniaxial engineering stress–strain curves (particularly the martensite nucleation peak and the plateau length) are affected by extensometer parameters in tension, compression, and the novel load case of shear-compression. By post-experimental analysis of full surface strain field data, the effect of the placement of various virtual extensometers at different locations (with respect to the nucleation site of martensite bands or inhomogeneously deforming regions) and with different gauge lengths is documented. By positioning an extensometer directly on the region corresponding to the nucleating martensite band, we, for the first time, directly record the strain-softening nature of the material—a specific softening behavior that is, for instance, important for the modeling community. Our results show that the stress–strain curves, which are often used as a basis for constitutive modeling, are affected considerably by the choice of extensometer, particularly under tensile loading, that leads to a distinct mode of localized deformation/transformation. Under compression-shear loading, inhomogeneous deformation (without lateral growth of martensite bands) is observed. The effects of extensometer gauge length are thus less pronounced than in tension, yet systematic—they are rationalized by considering the relative impact of differently deforming regions.

Photogrammetric techniques for characterisation of anisotropic mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V

The principal aims of this research have been the development of photogrammetric techniques for the measurement of anisotropic deformation in uniaxially loaded cylindrical specimens. This has been achieved through the use of calibrated cameras and the application of edge detection and multiple view geometry. The techniques have been demonstrated at quasi-static strain rates, 10^-3 s^-1, using a screw-driven loading device and high strain rates, 10^3 s^-1, using Split Hopkinson Bars. The materials that have been measured using the technique are nearlyisotropic steel, anisotropic cross-rolled Ti-6Al-4V and anisotropic clock-rolled commercially pure Zr. These techniques allow the surface shapes of specimens that deform elliptically to be completely tracked and measured in situ during loading. This has allowed the measurement of properties that could not have been recorded before, including true direct stress and the ratio of transverse strains in principal material directions, at quasi-static and elevated strain rates, in tension and compression. The techniques have been validated by measuring elliptical prisms of various aspect ratios and independently measuring interrupted specimens using a coordinate measurement machine. A secondary aim of this research has been to improve the characterisation of the anisotropic mechanical properties of cross-rolled Ti-6Al-4V using the techniques developed. In particular, the uniaxial yield stresses, hardening properties and the associated anisotropic deformation behaviour along the principal material directions, have all been recorded in detail not seen before. Significant findings include: higher yield stresses in-plane than in the through-thickness direction in both tension and compression, and the near transverse-isotropy of the through-thickness direction for loading conditions other than quasi-static tension, where significant anisotropy was observed.
