Perceptions Regarding the Use and Experience of Information and Communication Technology from Female Students in a Catholic Middle School

Tellez, Julio Cuauhtemoc 18 March 2016 (has links) (PDF)
Despite advancements in the search of equity, females still struggle to find acceptance in the field of information and communication technology. Research indicates that differences in perception of ability of ICT use begin to manifest in the middle school level. This mixed methods study explored the experiences and perceptions of 46 middle school females and males to expose possible influential factors about the use of ICT by females. The dissertation study occurred in two phases. The first phase involved a survey that was given to the entire middle school. Data from the survey provided participants for the second phase, which involved a focus group discussion with six female students in grades 7 and 8 to examine influential factors in the use of ICT. Findings indicated statistically significant differences between males and females exist at the study site. Females were more likely to (a) access ICT at the after school program and at a relative’s house; (b) identify a relative as an important influence in ICT; (c) share created media; (d) declare higher experience with Photoshop; (e) seek medicine as potential career and less likely to (f) report building a robot or invention using technology; (d) use ICT to play multi-user online games; (f) express interest in action, competition, and graphics in games (h) know terms such as firewall and torrent; (i) pursue careers as computer programmers, engineers, or computer game designers than their male counterparts. The findings support the need for school leadership establishing or enhancing a technology integration program to consider the difference between males and females as foundational cornerstone in the technology integration program.

Emprego de matriz polimérica biodegradável em dispositivos vaginais para liberação sustentada de progesterona em fêmeas bovinas: testes in vitro e in vivo / Use of biodegradable polymeric matrix, in vaginal devices, to sustained progesterone release in cows: in vitro e in vivo tests

Pimentel, José Rodrigo Valim 26 June 2006 (has links)
With the increase in the number of animals inseminated by TAI (timed artificial insemination) the decrease of costs and the improvement of reproductive performance are the goals of several research groups. Progesterone devices which are majority constituted of a nylon skeleton covered with a silicone layer with P4, are used in TAI protocols. Aiming the decrease of the production costs and the environmental impact, was a new device developed with biopolymers matrix. In this study, were compared a blend of Poli-hidroxi-butirate (PHB) and poli-?-caprolactone (PCL) device with the Bovine Internal Device (DIB®). In the in vitro test, two kinds of the new device with a superficial area of 147 cm2: DISP8 (46% PHB, 46% PCL and 8% P4; n=4), DISP10 (45% PHB, 45% PCL, 10% P4; n=4) and DIB® (1 g of P4, area of 120 cm2; n=3). The in vitro tests were led following USP 23 specifications in a drug dissolutor in alcohol/water (60/40) solution as a diffusion medium. Samples were collected at 2 min., 2, 4, 8, 12, 24, 48, 60, 72, 84 and 96 hours. Progesterone concentrations were estimated by spectrophotometry at UV 244 nm wavelenght. Comparisons 3 by 3 of the angular coefficients of the straight lines obtained by the regression of the accumulated P4 concentrations in function of the square root of time were performed. The averages and respective standard-errors of the angular coefficients were 677,39 ± 16.13 µg/cm2/t1/2 to DIB®, 566,17 ± 3.68 µg/cm2/t1/2 to Disp8 and 774,63 ± 45.26 µg/cm2/t1/2 to Disp10. Difference were observed between DISP8 and DISP10 (p< 0.05) but both did not differ to DIB®. Four periods were considered for analysis of the amounts released per day of in vitro test: 0-24, 24-48, 48-72 and 72-96 hours. Interaction between treatment and time was observed (p=0.0024). In the first 24 hours DISP8 released significantly less P4 than DISP10 and DIB® but the lathers did not differ from each other. In the interval between 24 and 48 hours DISP10 released significantly more P4 than DIB®. The device DISP8 released an intermediary concentration of P4 and was similar to DIB® and to DISP10. In the interval between 48 and 72 hours the progesterone concentration released by DISP10 was significantly higher than DIB® and DISP8 but lathers did not differ from each other. In the interval between 72 and 96 hours DISP10 released significantly more P4 than DIB® while DISP8 released an intermediary amount which did not differ to DIB® or to DISP10. In the test in vivo test, six ovariectomized beef cows received the devices DIB® (n=4) or DISP8 (n=8) in an alternated delineation in a nom balanced sequence (cross-over) added of repeated measures in time, related to the 16 days of blood samples collects. Progesterone concentration from these samples were measured by radioimmunoassay in solid phase using the commercial kit from DPC (Diagnostics Products Corporation). The peak of the progesterone concentrations were observed 4 hours after the devices insertion and this was the unique moment in which plasmatic progesterone concentrations differed depending on device (11,45 ± 1,96 vs 9,23 ± 1,15 ng/mL, respectively for DIB and DISP8; p= 0,027). After 8 days from the device insertion plasmatic progesterone concentrations provided by DIB and DISP8 were respectively 2,44 ± 0,09 and 1,89 ± 0,13 ng/mL (p=0.58). Both devices kept the progesterone concentration higher than 1 ng/mL during the 16 days of the in vivo test. In conclusion, the devices made with biopolymers blends of PHB/PCL can release sustained P4 comparable with silicone matrix.

Participation in Yoga: Anxiety, Depression, and Health-Related Quality of Life Measures in College Students

Veltri, Katie 01 January 2006 (has links)
The experimenter's purpose was to assess whether short-term yoga training could improve overall well-being in female college students. There were two parts to the study. The first part included 98 participants, who took three questionnaires measuring anxiety, depression, and subjective well-being. The measures used were, the State Trait Anxiety Inventory, the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale, and an original Subjective Sense of Well-being questionnaire. The experimenter wanted to see if there was a difference in perceived anxiety, depression, and health-related quality of life between males and females. There were 53 females and 45 males. In an Independent ttest, the results indicated that females differed significantly in anxiety, depression, and health-related quality of life measures. When compared to males, the females had more negative perceptions of their anxiety, depression, and well-being. In the second part of the study, eight participants, who were students at University of Central Florida, volunteered to attend eight yoga sessions, each an hour long. Since four of the participants attended only one session, the experimenter compared these (Low Attendance) to the four participants who attended all of the yoga sessions (High Attendance) over a period of four weeks (2 yoga sessions per week). Results were analyzed using a 2X2 mixed ANOV A. Results failed to demonstrate significant main effects for Pre-Post for any of the 3 dependent measures. Main effects for participation (High vs. Low) were not significant for anxiety or depression, but did reveal significantly higher subjective well-being for the High participants group. No interaction effects were significant.

African American Women's Understanding of How Family Values Contribute to Social Aggression

Butts, Elsa Bernice 01 January 2019 (has links)
Researchers have found that social aggression has increased among African American females. Researchers have reported that the family value systems of many African American families endorse aggressive behaviors. Beliefs of fighting verbally and physically for self-worth and equality have been embedded in the socialization process for some African American females. It is important to explore the influence of family values on socially aggressive behaviors among this population. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of African American females in early adulthood and to understand how their socially aggressive behaviors are influenced by their family values. The theoretical framework for this study was social learning theory along with aggression, a subset of social learning theory. The research question was designed to explore how African American females in early adulthood experience and perceive social aggression and family values. Ten African American females were interviewed. Moustakas' method of data analysis was used to identify 4 themes: common family values, learned socially aggressive behaviors, acting out, and handling conflict. Understanding the behaviors and experiences of African American females with socially aggressive behaviors could result in positive social change, first, by increasing knowledge about the origins of socially aggressive behaviors among this population and then by improving guidance and counseling for African American females involved in socially aggressive behaviors.

Punjabi Sikh women's arthritis self management experiences

Hipwell, Alison E. January 2010 (has links)
Self-management interventions enhance the health self-management techniques and physical and psychological health outcomes among people with long-term health conditions (LTHCs). Few individuals from South Asian backgrounds attended the pilot phase of one such intervention: the Expert Patients Programme (EPP), a community-based self-management course. This raised concerns about exacerbating health inequalities. South Asian people have increased prevalence and severity of certain musculoskeletal conditions, yet little is known about their experiences of living with and self-managing these. This research aimed to rectify these omissions, by describing Punjabi Sikh women's experiences of living with and self-managing arthritis, and identifying barriers and facilitators to EPP. Three studies explored White and Punjabi Sikh EPP tutors‟ experiences of delivering EPP to South Asian attendees, and Punjabi Sikh women's experiences of living with and self-managing arthritis, both before and after they attended a Punjabi-language EPP. White and Punjabi Sikh tutors' sometimes dichotomous experiences of delivering EPP to South Asians, captured barriers to South Asian people's attendance, engagement and self-management. Facilitators identified included the need for sensitive tailoring of the Course, involving the Punjabi Sikh community. The Punjabi Sikh women's vibrant experiential accounts revealed the detrimental psychological and physical consequences that arthritis had upon their lives. Highly versatile in their proactive arthritis self-management prior to attending EPP, participants' refined techniques encompassed combinations of medication and Indian remedies, empowered by their religious and spiritual values. Following EPP attendance, the participants reported psychological and physical improvements in their arthritis. Thus, this Study established Punjabi Sikh 4 Abstract women's inherent acceptance of the concept of self-management, and, notwithstanding its current limitations, the likely appropriateness of EPP. Every Study represents a novel contribution to knowledge. Meaningful engagement with Punjabi Sikh community-members may produce a culturally-competent intervention that could better improve this group's physical and psychological outcomes, thus addressing one small area of health inequalities.

The effects of social media on the body satisfaction of adolescent and young adult females

Wallis, Julia January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Apparel, Textiles, and Interior Design / Joy Kozar / The thin female body-type perpetuated in the media has historically caused decreased body satisfaction in adolescent and young adult females (Dittmar, 2009). Previous studies have examined the impact of these images in traditional media, but few studies have examined images seen in social media. Therefore, this study examined how social media impacts the body satisfaction of adolescent and young adult females through the variables of age, time spent on social media, social comparison behaviors, and appearance-related attitudes. The study utilized a sample of females between the ages of 14 to 25. As a component of this study, age was broken into two groups, creating a younger (14-18) and older (19-25) group. This allowed the researcher to make comparisons between the two age groups in relation to the variables being studied. An online questionnaire was utilized as part of this study and distributed to college professors, high school instructors, high school and college-age students, and via social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. A total of 357 female respondents between the ages of 14 and 25 years old participated in the study. Of the 357 participants, 140 (39.2%) were in the age category of 14-18 and 217 (60.8%) were in the age category of 19-25. Results indicated that participants who accessed their social media accounts more times per day were more likely to engage in social comparison behavior to fashion models and celebrities and peers. In addition, the more participants compared themselves with fashion models and celebrities and peers, the higher their appearance-related attitudes, which lowered their body satisfaction. Age was not a significant factor in predicting time spent on social media, participation in social comparison behavior, or appearance-related attitudes. However, among the sample, younger participants were overall more satisfied with their body than older participants. It was determined that on average, participants checked their social media accounts between 5 and 15 times a day and spent three or less hours daily on social media. These findings have important implications for the fashion and cosmetics industries and AT educators. The results indicate that social media has an impact on young women’s body satisfaction.

The acute effects of exercise on appetite perceptions, gut hormones and food intake in females

Alajmi, Nawal January 2014 (has links)
In recent years there has been growing interest in the role of gut hormones in regulating appetite, energy balance and weight control. Prominent among these hormones is the hunger hormone ghrelin which is the only circulating hormone currently known to stimulate appetite. A variety of hormones are known to suppress appetite and notable among these is peptide YY (PYY). Both ghrelin and PYY exist in more than one form with acylated ghrelin and PYY3-36 representing the biologically active forms of these hormones i.e. the form of each hormone with the most potent effects on appetite. Many studies have investigated ghrelin responses to exercise in male participants and some studies have also examined PYY responses. Far fewer studies have examined ghrelin and PYY responses in female participants and this was the primary purpose of the studies reported here. This thesis comprises four main experimental chapters which collectively sought to clarify whether there is any evidence to support the hypothesis that appetite, gut hormone and food intake responses differ in female compared with male participants. A total of 123 participants took part in the studies reported in this thesis. The first of these studies was cross-sectional in nature and compared fasting appetite, plasma acylated ghrelin and dietary restraint questionnaire values (among other variables) in 34 males and 33 females. No significant differences were observed between sexes for any of these variables. In the second study, appetite, plasma acylated ghrelin and ad libitum food intake responses to cycling exercise were examined in 13 female participants taking the oral contraceptive pill in both the luteal and follicular phases of the menstrual cycle. Although fasting hunger and prospective food consumption values were higher in the follicular than the luteal phase there was no difference in appetite, plasma acylated ghrelin and food intake responses to exercise between menstrual cycle phases. In the third study, appetite, plasma acylated ghrelin, plasma PYY3-36 and food intake responses to energy deficits created via diet and exercise were compared in 13 young, healthy female participants who completed three separate trials (control, exercise deficit and food deficit) in a random order. The findings revealed that, as with male participants, females experience compensatory appetite, gut hormone and food intake responses to dietary induced energy deficits but not to exercise induced energy deficits (over the course of a nine hour observation period). The final study reported in this thesis compared appetite, plasma acylated ghrelin and ad libitum food intake responses to a one hour run in 10 male and 10 female participants. Suppressions of both hunger and plasma acylated ghrelin were noted during exercise but there was no significant difference in the responses of males and females during or after exercise. Collectively, the studies reported here suggest: 1) that fasting appetite and plasma acylated ghrelin concentrations do not differ between male and female participants; 2) that appetite, ghrelin and food intake responses to cycling exercise do not differ according to the phase of the menstrual cycle in females; 3) that dietary restriction is more likely to elicit compensatory feeding responses than elevated exercise levels in females and 4) that males and females do not differ in their acute appetite, ghrelin and food intake responses to an acute bout of running exercise. Hence the studies reported here do not support the hypothesis that exercise will be less effective for controlling appetite and food intake in females than in males.

Knowledge and beliefs about HPV and HPV vaccine among young Thai females

Öberg, Conny, Josefsson, Sofia January 2016 (has links)
Background: Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is the recognized main reason for developing cervical cancer. HPV vaccine given to females is the most effective prevention. Purpose: To investigate knowledge and beliefs about HPV, cervical cancer and HPV vaccine among young Thai females in north-eastern part of Thailand. Further, to discover potential differences between those stating having knowledge about HPV and cervical cancer (group SHK), and those stating not having knowledge about HPV and cervical cancer (group SNHK). Method: A cross-sectional survey using a questionnaire about knowledge and beliefs of HPV where 221 young Thai females, aged 18-21, participated. Orem’s self-care theory was used as theoretical framework. Result: Less than 50 % of the participants knew about visible signs and symptoms of HPV infection. However, over 70 % had knowledge regarding HPV´s relation to sexual activity. Internet was the greatest source of information about HPV. Participants had positive belief towards the vaccine and more than 95% wished to get vaccinated. Group SHK had more knowledge then group SNHK with significant difference in seven out of fourteen knowledge items, and showed more positive beliefs with significant difference in six out of sixteen belief statements. Conclusion: The overall level of knowledge about HPV and cervical cancer was insufficient. However, this did not affect the participant’s beliefs in the subject negatively. Health care should provide viable internet sites with information about HPV to ensure that young Thai females get requisites, enabling self-care on preventing HPV infections by vaccination.

Gender disparities in competitive cycling : an analysis of the structural, socio-cultural, and individual factors affecting female participation in Texas

Forrest, Katherine Elizabeth 02 November 2010 (has links)
Of the 2,858 licensed competitive road cyclists in Texas, female cyclists only account for 12%. The gender disparity in participation numbers suggests possible underlying barriers to entry, recruitment, and retention of female athletes compared to that of male cyclists. The current study sought to understand such issues by exploring the entirety of the competitive road cycling experience of female cyclists in Texas. To accomplish such a task, the current study utilized a mixed methods design consisting of content analysis, interviews, and an online survey. Integrating methods allowed for a more comprehensive understanding of the individual as impacted by structural, socio- cultural, and individual factors and further reveals how such factors are interrelated and mutually reinforcing. Results revealed how socio-culturally informed gendered attitudes and norms heavily impact structural policies, rules, and regulations within competitive cycling. Subsequently, structural factors influenced individual choices, attitudes, and behaviors. Further, results emphasized that individuals are complex beings, and although shaped by their environment, embody personal agency, resistance, and coping. Individual decisions, attitudes, and desires subsequently shaped socio-cultural norms and structural processes. Finally, structural reform strategies are suggested to help increase female participation and retention rates within competitive road cycling in Texas. / text
