The Biconjugate Gradient (BiCG) method is an iterative Krylov subspace method that utilizes a 3-term recurrence. BiCG is the basis of several very popular methods, such as BiCGStab. The short recurrence makes BiCG preferable to other Krylov methods because of decreased memory usage and CPU time. However, BiCG does not satisfy any optimality conditions and it has been shown that for up to n/2-1 iterations, a special choice of the left starting vector can cause BiCG to follow {em any} 3-term recurrence. Despite this apparent sensitivity, BiCG often converges well in practice. This paper seeks to explain why BiCG converges so well, and what conditions can cause BiCG to behave poorly. We use tools such as the singular value decomposition and eigenvalue decomposition to establish bounds on the residuals of BiCG and make links between BiCG and optimal Krylov methods. / Master of Science

One of the promises of High Level Architecture (HLA) is the reusability of
simulation components. Although HLA supports reusability to some extent with
mechanisms provided by Object Model Template (OMT), when the developer
wants to use an existing federate application within another federation with a
different Federation Object Model (FOM) problem arises. She usually has to
modify the federate code and rebuilt it. There have been some attempts to solve
this problem and they, in fact, accomplish this to some extent but usually they fall
short of providing flexible but also a complete mapping mechanism. In this work,
a model based approach that mainly focuses on Declaration, Object and
Federation Management services is explored. The proposed approach makes use
of Model Integrated Computing (MIC) and .NET 2.0 technologies by grouping
federate transitioning activities into three well-defined phases, namely, modeling,
automatic code generation and component generation. As a side product, a .NET
2.0 wrapper to Runtime Infrastructure (RTI) has been developed to help
developers create IEEE 1516 compatible .NET 2.0 federates in a programming
language independent way.

Energy-Efficient Capacitance-to-Digital Converters for Smart Sensor ApplicationsAlhoshany, Abdulaziz 12 1900 (has links)
One of the key requirements in the design of wireless sensor nodes and miniature biomedical devices is energy efficiency. For a sensor node, which is a sensor and readout circuit, to survive on limited energy sources such as a battery or harvested energy, its energy consumption should be minimized. Capacitive sensors are candidates for use in energy-constrained applications, as they do not consume static power and can be used in a wide range of applications to measure different physical, chemical or biological quantities. However, the energy consumption is dominated by the capacitive interface circuit, i.e. the capacitance-to-digital converter (CDC).
Several energy-efficient CDC architectures are introduced in this dissertation to meet the demand for high resolution and energy efficiency in smart capacitive sensors. First, we propose an energy-efficient CDC based on a differential successive-approximation data converter. The proposed differential CDC employs an energy-efficient operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) based on an inverter. A wide capacitance range with fine absolute resolution is implemented in the proposed coarse-fine DAC architecture which saves 89% of silicon area. The proposed CDC achieves an energy efficiency figure-of-merit (FOM) of 45.8fJ/step, which is the best reported energy efficiency to date. Second, we propose an energy efficient CDC for high-precision capacitive resolution by using oversampling and noise shaping. The proposed CDC achieves 150 aF absolute resolution and an energy efficiency FOM of 187fJ/conversion-step which outperforms state of the art high-precision differential CDCs. In the third and last part, we propose an in-vitro cancer diagnostic biosensor-CMOS platform for low-power, rapid detection, and low cost. The introduced platform is the first to demonstrate the ability to screen and quantify the spermidine/spermine N1 acetyltransferase (SSAT) enzyme which reveals the presence of early-stage cancer, on the surface of a capacitive biosensor. This platform, which is a biosensor combined with a highly energy-efficient digital CDC, is implemented and fabricated in a CMOS technology and can sense and convert the capacitance value from the biosensor to a digital word in an energy efficient way. The platform achieves an ultra-low power consumption: four orders of magnitude less than the state-of-the-art biosensor-CMOS platforms.

Explicit or Implicit Grammar? - Grammar Teaching Approaches in Three English 5 TextbooksJakobsson, Ina, Knutsson, Emmalinn January 2020 (has links)
Grammar is an essential part of language learning. Thus, it is important that teachers know how to efficiently teach grammar to students, and with what approach - explicitly orimplicitly as well as through Focus on Forms (FoFs), Focus on Form (FoF) or Focus onMeaning (FoM). Furthermore, the common use of textbooks in English education in Sweden makes it essential to explore how these present grammar. Therefore, to make teachers aware of what grammar teaching approach a textbook has, this degree project intends to examine how and to what degree English textbooks used in Swedish upper secondary schools can be seen to exhibit an overall explicit or implicit approach to grammar teaching. The aim is to analyze three English 5 textbooks that are currently used in classrooms in Sweden, through the use of relevant research regarding grammar teaching as well as the steering documents for English 5 in Swedish upper secondary school. The analysis was carried out with the help of a framework developed by means of research on explicit and implicit grammar teaching as well as the three grammar teaching approaches FoFs, FoF and FoM. Thus, through the textbook analysis, we set out to investigate whether the textbooks present grammar instruction explicitly or implicitly and through FoFs, FoF or FoM. After having collected research on the topic of how to teach grammar, it became apparent that researchers on grammar teaching agree that FoF is the most beneficial out of the three above mentioned approaches, and thus, we decided to take a stand for this approach throughout the project. The results of this study showed that two out of three textbooks used overall implicit grammar teaching through FoM. Moreover, one out of the three textbooks used overall explicit grammar teaching through an FoF approach.

The fears expressed and coping mechanisms of a selected group of middle childhood South African children living in a children's homeBurkhardt, Kathe-Erla 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MSc)--University of Stellenbosch, 2003. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The primary aim of this study was to establish normative data regarding the fears expressed by and
coping mechanisms in a selected group of middle childhood children living in a children's home with
respect to content, number, level and pattern of fears and the coping mechanisms as well as their
perceived efficacy. Children living in a children's home were referred to as children who were
removed from family care as a result of lawful intervention and were thus seen as a special
population.
The secondary aim was to ascertain whether any differences in the fears expressed were found with
respect to the independent variables of a special population and gender. The three measuring
instruments were the Free-Option Method (FOM), the Fear Survey Schedule for Children Revised
(FSSC-R) and the Coping Strategy (CS). The FOM was used to determine the content and number
of fears, the structured FSSC-R to establish the content, number, level and pattern of fears and the
CS to obtain the coping mechanisms used and their perceived effectiveness.
A predominantly quantitative method of data collection was used. This was also true for the data
analysis. In all three questionnaires were completed by 141 children living in a children's home (70
boys and 71 girls) in the Western Cape between the ages of 8 and 13. The three questionnaires
comprised of the FOM, FSSC-R and the CS and were administered in the above-mentioned order.
The content of fears based on the results of the FOM yielded only a few similarities upon comparison
to the findings of a recent study by. More similarities were apparent upon comparison of the results
of the FSSC-R implying that the structuredness of the measuring instrument plays a role in how
universal childhood fears really are. The number as well as level of fear was higher for the children
living in a children's home in comparison to the results of normative populations. This also holds
true for the level of fear on all of the fear factors of the FSSC-R Gender differences that were
apparent, were consistent with previous research with girls expressing a higher number and level of
fears than boys. The girls in comparison to the boys also displayed a higher level of fear on all the
five factors.
The coping strategy most often used as well as perceived effective was the secondary coping
strategy. This was followed by the primary coping strategy and finally the relinquished control coping strategy. Specific coping strategies, which were utilised, were support seeking and avoidance
and these are associated with a higher level of intemalising symptoms. Overall, the coping strategies
utilised were found to be effective in reducing the fear experienced.
Only a few similarities were apparent upon companson of the results of the two measunng
instruments, the FOM and the FSSC-R, emphasising the need for the development of an South
African Fear Schedule.
Lastly, recommendations for future studies are provided. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die primêre doel van die onderhawige studie was die insameling van ·normatiewe data omtrent die
uitgesproke vrese van 'n geselekteerde groep kinderhuiskinders in die middelkinderjare met
betrekking tot die inhoud, aantal, vlak en patroon van vrese en die hanteringstrategieë, sowel as die
waargenome effektiwiteit daarvan. Kinders wat in kinderhuise woon is kinders wat van hulle gesinne
verwyder is as gevolg van 'n wetlike ingreep en hulle word om hierdie rede as 'n spesiale populasie
beskou.
Die sekondêre doel van die onderhawige studie was om vas te stelof daar verskille was in die
uitgesproke vrese met betrekking tot die onafhanklike veranderlikes van 'n spesiale populasie en
geslag. Die drie meetinstrumente wat toegepas is, is die "Free Option Method" (FOM), die ''Fear
Survey Schedule for Children Revised" (FSSC-R) en die "Coping Strategy"(CS). Die FOM is
gebruik om die inhoud en aantal vrese te bepaal, terwyl die FSSC-R gebruik is om die inhoud, aantal,

op al vyf faktore van die FSSC-R. Geslagsverskille wat voorgekom het, is in ooreenstemming met

Daar was min ooreenstemming tussen die resultate van die twee vrees meetinstrumente, die FOM en
die FSSC-R, wat die behoefte aan die ontwikkeling van 'n vrees meetinstrument vir Suid-Afrikaanse
omstandighede beklemtoon.

An Analysis of the way Grammar is Presented in two Coursebooks for English as a Second Language : A Qualitative Conceptual Analysis of Grammar in Swedish Coursebooks for Teaching EnglishFrom, Malcolm January 2021 (has links)
This essay aims to investigate theoretically how two currently used coursebooks, What’s Up 9 and Solid Gold 1, in a local area of Southern Sweden, present (introduces and covers) grammar. The overall aim is to investigate how grammar is presented, using the present simple and the present continuous as examples. The findings are also mapped to teaching approaches, as well as SLA (Second Language Acquisition) research, to see what approaches are favoured for teaching grammar in the first decades of the 21st century. In order to investigate the course- books, a qualitative content analysis and conceptual analysis was chosen with the presentation of grammar mapped into different categories, by using concepts for teaching and approaches used in SLA. The results show that the two proposed coursebooks favoured a FoFs (Focus on Forms) approach for presenting grammar. Furthermore, the results show that grammar is pre- sented explicitly and, if the teachers use the structures proposed in the coursebook rigidly, they automatically follow a deductive teaching procedure. When using a FoFs, explicit instructions and taking a deductive teaching approach, it may be regarded as the coursebooks suggest a grammar-translation approach as well. However, when observing other exercises connected to the reading texts in the coursebooks, it was detected that both coursebooks favoured a text- based approach for teaching, where the learners are supposed to learn the structure of different texts. In doing so, the grammatical structures are learned subconsciously and implicitly, which indicates that grammar is, in general, taught implicitly in the coursebooks, but presented (intro- duced and covered) explicitly.
