Eastern fox squirrel (Sciurus niger, Linnaeus 1758) introduction to the Sonoran DesertBrady, Matthew J., Koprowski, John L., Gwinn, R. Nathan, Jo, Yeong-Seok, Young, Kevin 01 January 2017 (has links)
The eastern fox squirrel, native to the eastern and midwestern United States, was recently documented in the Sonoran Desert in the vicinity of Yuma, Arizona, constituting the first state record for this species. We surveyed the people of Yuma to determine when and how the squirrels arrived. The squirrels were first observed in the 1960s, but may have been resident for a longer period. Since the 1960s, squirrels have spread throughout the city limits and extended south similar to 15 km into Somerton, Arizona. How the squirrels arrived is not clear, but must be the result of an introduction, as no nearby populations exist. The persistence of eastern fox squirrels in this unique habitat is due to synanthropic relationships.

Home Range and Habitat Use of Santa Rosa Island Foxes (Urocyon littoralis santarosae)Drake, Elizabeth Marie 01 March 2013 (has links)
Island foxes (Urocyon littoralis) are currently listed as federally endangered on four of the six Channel Islands to which they are endemic. The Santa Rosa Island (SRI) population declined by 99% during the 1990’s due to non-native golden eagle (Aguila chrysaetos) predation and is currently the lowest fox population (~280) and density (0.86 foxes/km2) of any of the Channel Islands. The goals of this study were to assess new miniaturized GPS technology and to quantify home range and habitat use of the SRI population. This is only the second use of Global Positioning System (GPS) collars on Channel Island foxes and provides essential baseline data for the recovering population. These results can be used to guide management decisions and future habitat restoration efforts after the recent removal of non-native ungulates.
In fall 2009, 14 GPS collars were deployed on male foxes on the east side of SRI. Nine collars and three remote download datasets were recovered in 2010. The collars’ battery life was 40% lower than expected at an average (±SE) of 16.5 ± 1.7 weeks but had high performance in precision and fix rate. Collars yielded an average of 347 ± 33 locations with a fix rate of 82.3% ± 2.1% and 88% of locations categorized as high precision.
From these data, 95% minimum convex polygon (MCP) home ranges and 95% kernel density isopleth (KDI) home ranges were created. The average 95% MCP home range size was 3.39 ± 0.59km2 and the area of overlap with adjacent home ranges had a median of 5.3%. The average 95% KDI home range size was 3.82 ± 0.68km2 with a median overlap of 6.0%. These home range sizes are almost triple the size reported in other island fox studies, likely due to the low fox densities in the recovering SRI population.
Habitat analysis was performed using KDI home ranges and a Euclidian distance analysis (EDA) method to assess habitat selection within the study area, the home range and the core area. Results showed selection for lupine within the study area, which no previous studies have documented. There was no significant habitat selection within the home ranges or core areas. Foxes selected for valley bottom topography and for bare and grassland habitat at night. One shortcoming of EDA is that its reliance on random points for determining second order selection can lead to unused areas being identified as selected habitat. The lack of significant selection within home ranges and core areas may be attributed to small sample sizes, use of male foxes only and the timing of the study in relation to fox reproductive biology.
I recommend further investigation in the use of lupine habitat and associated resources through prey inventory studies to further assess these findings. When densities reach historic levels of 4 foxes/km2, follow up studies should be conducted to reassess home range size, overlap and habitat use to determine if home range sizes have decreased and overlap has increased. Future studies should incorporate spring and summer seasons and females to determine if foxes select a particular habitat within the core area during denning and pupping periods.

The biology of the European red fox and the free roaming dog on Bherwerre Peninsula, Jervis BayMeek, Paul D., n/a January 1998 (has links)
This thesis provides an insight into the biology and ecology of foxes Vulpes vulpes
from a coastal habitat and free roaming dogs Canis lupus familiaris from an Aboriginal
community, both in SE NSW. In particular, the study examines the home range and
movement patterns of both canids from a view point of population and disease control.
Additional base line information was collected for these species on diet, parasites and
population biology.
A total of 14 foxes and 10 dogs were collared and radio tracked to determine the home
range and movement patterns of the animals. The data collected provides information on the
behaviour of foxes in coastal habitat and represents the first detailed biological study of freeroaming
dogs in Australia. The results provide a better understanding of dog movements,
particularly the differences in behaviour between wandering and sedentary dogs. Home range
sizes varied greatly between the dog groups from 1 ha to 2451 ha. There was evidence that
dog forays were influenced by prey availability, particularly medium sized macropods.
Occasional sallies, size and shape of fox and dog home range is discussed in relation to the
richness of habitat at Jervis Bay with comparisons being made with other studies from the
literature. Foxes in Jervis Bay had home ranges between 60-270 ha which is comparable to
foxes living in the forests of Germany and in coastal habitat in the Netherlands
This study also provides data on the diet of foxes and dogs presenting quantitative and
qualitative data on food preferences. Foxes tended to be opportunistic in food selection
although critical weight range mammals ie. ringtail possums were favoured. The high
prevalence of the parasite Spirometra spp. in foxes indicated that considerable numbers of
amphibians and reptiles are consumed by this species. A comprehensive inventory of the
parasites of the two canid species showed a high proportion of hookworm in foxes and dogs
and Spirometra spp in foxes. These results are discussed in light of the potential health
implications for local Aboriginal people.
Analysis of fox scats revealed that they have the potential to spread the seeds of bitou
bush. A more detailed pilot study revealed the potential impact of foxes on the environment
through the spread of weed seeds. Germination trials recorded high viability of seeds that
were eaten and deposited by foxes. The management implications of this behaviour are
discussed in context to weed control.
This thesis has provided new information on foxes and dogs in Australia. Discussion
on these species in the thesis has been framed around the benefits of this information for
population and disease control.

Att lyssna på film : (en närlyssning av) musiken i Fantastic Mr. Fox / Listening to films : The filmmusic in Fantastic Mr. FoxNygren, Markus January 2013 (has links)
Denna avhandling tar upp filmmusiken i Fantastic Mr. Fox.
