Data derived largely from ecclesiastical (mostly churchwardens') accounts, foxhunting statistics, local scientific society records and 19th and 20th century literature sources from a wide range of published material, have provided detailed evidence of the status and changes in distribution over the past four centuries in Yorkshire for fox (Vulpes vulpes), badger (Meles meles), otter (Lutra lutra), pine marten (Martes martes), stoat (Mustela erminea), weasel (M. nivalis), polecat (M. putorius), American mink (M. vison), wildcat (Felis silvestris) and domestic cat (Felis catus). In the case of the domestic cat, questionnaire surveys quantified population sizes and predatory activity in rural, suburban and urban situations. Evidence of the former distribution of all the carnivores studied provides a credible historical basis for biodiversity action planning and the substantial archived database and bibliography provide further research opportunities.

Previous issue date: 2011 / Resumo: Neste trabalho é apresentado um estudo sistemático da função H de Fox e aplicações no cálculo fracionário. Inicialmente é feito um estudo da função hipergeométrica e suas possíveis generalizações, logo em seguida é definida a integral de Mellin-Barnes e a função G de Meijer, em conjunto com suas propriedades e seus casos particulares. Depois é definida a função H de Fox, objetivo principal do trabalho, e seu atual campo de aplicação, que é o cálculo fracionário. Finalmente, apresentam-se as aplicações envolvendo a função H de Fox e o cálculo fracionário. Das três aplicações, os dois primeiros resultados correspondem a duas generalizações: uma da equação do telégrafo e a outra da equação de Schrödinger. Enfim, é discutida uma generalização da equação de onda-difusão no caso em que as condições iniciais são periódicas / Abstract: This work presents a systematic study of the Fox H function and its possible applications in fractional calculus. It begins with a study about the hypergeometric function and its possible generalizations; after that, the Mellin-Barnes integral and the Meijer G function are defined and their properties and particular cases are presented. The Fox H function is then defined and its current field of application, fractional calculus, is discussed. In the sequence some applications involving the Fox H function and fractional calculus are presented, which constitute its main results; the two first results involve the telegraph equation and the Schrödinger equation in their generalized sense. Inflammation in meninges and/or brain is regularly noticed in red foxes and other wild
carnivores during rabies control programs. Despite negative rabies virus (RABV) results,
the etiologies of these cases remain unknown. Thus, the aim of this study was to provide
an overview of the occurrence of pathogens that may cause diseases in the brains of
wild carnivores and pose a risk to humans and other animals. In addition to RABV and
canine distemper virus (CDV), a variety of pathogens, including members of Flaviviridae,
Bornaviridae, Herpesviridae, Circoviridae, as well as bacteria and parasites can also
cause brain lesions. In 2016 and 2017, brain samples of 1,124 wild carnivores were
examined by direct fluorescent antibody test for RABV as well as (reverse-transcriptase)
quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the presence of CDV as part of a
monitoring program in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Here, we applied similar methods to
specifically detect suid herpesvirus 1 (SuHV-1), West Nile virus (WNV), Borna disease
virus 1 (BoDV-1), canid alphaherpesvirus 1 (CaHV-1), canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV-2),
fox circovirus (FoxCV), and Neospora caninum (N. caninum). Further, bacteriogical
examination for the existence of Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) and
immunohistochemistry of selected cases to detect Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) antigen
were performed. Of all pathogens studied, CDV was found most frequently (31.05%),
followed by FoxCV (6.80%), CPV-2 (6.41%), T. gondii (4/15; 26.67%), nematode larvae
(1.51%), L. monocytogenes (0.3%), and various other bacterial pathogens (1.42%). In 68
of these cases (6.05%), multiple pathogen combinations were present simultaneously.
However, RABV, WNV, BoDV-1, SuHV-1, CaHV-1, and N. caninum were not detected.
The majority of the histopathological changes in 440 animals were inflammation
(320/440; 72.73%), predominantly non-suppurative in character (280/320; 87.50%), and
in many cases in combination with gliosis, satellitosis, neuronophagia, neuronal necrosis,
and/or vacuolization/demyelination, or in single cases with malacia. Thus, it could be
shown that wild carnivores in Saxony-Anhalt are carriers mainly for CDV and sometimes
also for other, partly zoonotic pathogens. Therefore, the existing monitoring program
should be expanded to assess the spill-over risk from wild carnivores to humans and
other animals and to demonstrate the role of wild carnivores in the epidemiology of these
zoonotic pathogens.

We classify animals into a few distinct groups: companion animals (pets and strays like dogs and cats), utility animals (animals that serve a purpose like cows farmed for dairy or meat or foxes farmed for fur), and wild animals (nondomestic animals in their natural habitat). This study will investigate empathic relationships between people and animals of these four types in two abuse scenarios (active abuse and neglect). These factors were manipulated in a 2x4 experimental design. I expect a closer relationship with humans will correlate with a higher degree of empathy for the victim such that homed companion animals will generate the most empathy, followed by stray, utility, and finally wild. Results supported this hypothesis to an extent. This research is intended to bridge gaps between empathy towards humans and empathy towards other animals. If we can manipulate the degree to which people tend to relate to animals by varying our descriptions of these animals, we can also manipulate people’s desire to protect them.

Measurements of Human Plasma OxidationOsborn, Anna January 2006 (has links)
The oxidation of lipids and antioxidants has been extensively studied in human plasma but little attention has been given to how plasma proteins are oxidised. Proteins make up the majority of biomolecules in cells and plasma and therefore are the most likely reactants with oxidants and free radicals. Previous studies in the laboratory had shown that peroxyl radicals generated by the thermolytic decay of 2-azobis (2-amdinopropane) dihydrochloride (AAPH) generated significant amounts of protein hydroperoxides, but only after a six hour lag period. In this study the existence of the six hour lag period was confirmed and shown by dialysis of the plasma to be due to the presence of low molecular weight antioxidants. The addition of both uric acid and ascorbic acid to the dialysed plasma restored the lag phase suggesting that in vivo these antioxidants act to prevent protein hydroperoxide formation. Lipid oxidation was also observed in the plasma but only after a two hour lag phase. This was the first time lipid oxidation has been observed in the absence of protein oxidation. The lipid lag phase was also abolished by dialysis of the plasma and restored by the addition of ascorbic acid and uric acid. The kinetics of tocopherol loss suggests that the tocopherol radicals act to inhibit lipid oxidation by transferring the electrons to the water-soluble ascorbate. The loss of ascorbate appears to cause the formation of a tocopherol radical mediate the lipid peroxidation process. Overall the data shows ascorbic acid scavenging the peroxyl radicals while uric acid acts to reduce the overall AAPH generated radical flux. In a separate investigation, the production of protein-bound DOPA (PB-DOPA) on albumin during X-ray radiolysis and copper mediate Fenton oxidation was investigated using a fluorescence based derivatisation method (ED-DOPA), which was compared with the more specific acid hydrolysis and HPLC analysis method. The ED-DOPA method consistently gave a much higher reading that the HPLC based methods, suggesting that the ED-DOPA method was measuring DOPA plus DOPA oxidation products. This was confirmed by oxidising X-ray radiolysis generated PB-DOPA with Cu++ to cause DOPA oxidation. The Cu++ treatment drastically increased the level of signal given by the ED-DOPA assay while HPLC analysis showed all the DOPA had been oxidised.

Assessing youth experiences of hydroelectric development in Fox Lake Cree Nation’s traditional territoryThomas, Randi 31 March 2017 (has links)
Fox Lake Cree Nation (FLCN) is a First Nation community located in northern Manitoba, with approximately 1100 community members, of which approximately 500 reside in the traditional territory. FLCN has been highly affected by the development of five dams within their traditional territory, and have participated in the Clean Environment Commission hearings to share the impacts of that development. The FLCN youth have a unique perspective and experience with development. Youth are impacted by past hydroelectric development projects, and will continue to be affected in the future. In addition to looking at impacts and mitigation strategies, FLCN youth are looking to business and training opportunities that still align with their core values and Cree worldview. Knowledge transmission from Elders to youth is an important factor in moving forward for FLCN youth. Understanding how these experiences and perspectives affect and influence youth in FLCN is important to creating a future that benefits the youth of Fox Lake Cree Nation. / May 2017
