Just a Click Away: Radicalization in the Net Generation

Barfuss, Frank January 2015 (has links)
The use of the Internet as vehicle of socialization has exploded in the 21st century and while this presents exciting possibilities, it also comes with troubling ones. Among those who have embraced this new medium are extremist groups, who use the Web as a space in which to communicate, exchange ideas, network and reach new followers. In regards to this last point, it provides them near unlimited opportunities to gain access to potential recruits and converts, raising interesting questions in terms of the dynamics of the radicalization process and how it manifests itself within the confines of this new arena. Through an analysis of postings made to the discussion board of Stormfront.org, this research paper examines whether or not the radicalization process follows the same transformative pattern in the virtual world as has been described in some of the leading academic theories that address this phenomenon in the physical one.

Evaluating the Effectiveness of Utah Farm Field Days

Wray, Paige 01 May 2017 (has links)
The goal of farm field days in Utah is to show an increase in agricultural literacy among elementary aged children. Evaluations of student learning have not been adequately assessed. Students from two of the statewide farm field day events were assessed on what they already knew about agriculture, what they wanted to learn about agriculture, and then what they learned about agriculture as a result of the event they attended. Data was collected and analyzed using the National Agriculture Literacy Outcomes and Themes, to determine if the farm field day events had any impact on their awareness or understanding of agriculture. Results indicated that students were below an average awareness of younger grade-level appropriate agricultural concepts before they attend the farm field day event. However, after the event, results indicated that student awareness of grade appropriate agricultural concepts increased.

Far Infrared Optical Absorption in Manganese Fluoride

Neimanis, John 05 1900 (has links)

The optical absorption in manganese fluoride has been studied in the range of 30 to 300 cm^-1 with emphasis placed on the possible multiple magnon absorptions (other than two-magnon) and an induced single magnon absorption. It is shown that theoretically one can expect four-magnon processes by expanding the Heisenberg spin hamiltonian to higher orders in the creation and annihilation operators introduced by the Holstein-Primakoff transformation. However, neither an induced one magnon nor four magnon process was observed. The absorptions which were seen in the spectra were attributed to phonon processes.
/ Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)

A Germanium Bolometer for the Far Infrared

Tumber, Adrian James 11 1900 (has links)

A technique has been developed for constructing low temperature germanium bolometers for use as detectors in the far infrared. Their performance has been evaluated both by measuring their responsivity and noise and comparing these with the theoretical values and also by using the bolometer in conjunction with a far infrared spectrophotometer to obtain spectra showing the theoretical resolution of 0.11 cm^-1 at 55 cm^-1 expected for this instrument.
/ Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)
