Just a Click Away: Radicalization in the Net GenerationBarfuss, Frank January 2015 (has links)
The use of the Internet as vehicle of socialization has exploded in the 21st century and while this presents exciting possibilities, it also comes with troubling ones. Among those who have embraced this new medium are extremist groups, who use the Web as a space in which to communicate, exchange ideas, network and reach new followers. In regards to this last point, it provides them near unlimited opportunities to gain access to potential recruits and converts, raising interesting questions in terms of the dynamics of the radicalization process and how it manifests itself within the confines of this new arena. Through an analysis of postings made to the discussion board of Stormfront.org, this research paper examines whether or not the radicalization process follows the same transformative pattern in the virtual world as has been described in some of the leading academic theories that address this phenomenon in the physical one.

The aim of the present work was to understand the reelaborations of the social representations of the skinheads of Brazil, after Edson Neris da Silva’s death in February, 2000, in a square (Praça da República), in downtown São Paulo. The study was based on the articulation of the power theater that elaborated the culpability of the violent crime against the “ABC skinheads”. This articulation considers the representation of the skinheads to be barbarian and that they deserved an exemplar punishment, which would be a model for others who had gender prejudice, so they could control their emotions and aggressiveness towards the difference. The gaps in the documents allowed us to learn other aspects of the sings and symbols which make the meaning webs that affirm the identitary way of the skinheads of Brazil. These skinheads reelaborate and resignify their ideas and social practice having as a thermometer of changes the circularities between them and the power of the press representation and the pressure of social segments. Therefore, we problematized the representations analysis elaborated by the skinheads of Brazil in fanzines and other means of publicizing ideas and values of these groups, related to the representations produced by the press. We prioritize the newspaper Folha de São Paulo, between years 2000 and 2004, to understand not only the power analogy involved in the confrontation among these representations, but we also aimed to deconstruct the reports, intending to reveal ideas, thoughts, values, traditions, and created cultures in these speeches. We focused on the skinheads’ actions and experiences in the urban areas, intending to elaborate considerations about daily problems, the territorialities structuralization, the sociability net, and the pertaining cultures configurated as micropowers that emerge in these spaces in a contradictory...(Complete abstract, click electronic access below)

Peculiarities of the Formation of Groups With Nationalist Worldviews in Lithuania: a Case of Skinheads / Nacionalistinių pažiūrų grupuočių formavimosi ypatumai Lietuvoje: Skinhedų atvejisKavolis, Tadas 02 September 2014 (has links)
The skinhead subculture is a global phenomenon – like many other youth subcultures.. Thus, the research question arises – which features of a skinhead’s identity emerge in the local environment of the Lithuanian society, and in which manner? Is the identity of a Lithuanian skinhead exceptional? The aim of the research was to reveal the peculiarities of right-wing skinheads’ identity, the motivation for choosing such identity, and the character of skinheads’ social activity. The work is based on empirical material collected during 2004–2013. The methods included an in-depth interview, a questionnaire survey, an integrated observation, and collecting visual material (photo and video) revealing the expressions of the subculture. The visual material presented in skinheads’ Facebook accounts was analyzed. The study was conducted by applying the induction technique where issues and individual and group aspects of identity and behavior characteristic of the skinheads were obtained from the available data. The study showed that the ideas characteristic of Lithuanian right-wing skinhead ideology are patriotism, nationalism, racial nationalism, as well as racism and neo-Nazism. Masculine values – strength, courage, fortitude and physical resilience, and ability to defend one’s ideas with force – occupy an important position on the list of skinheads’ values. In addition to characteristic internationally used elements, Lithuanian skinheads’ subcultural style is complemented with local –...

Huovinen, Petri January 2015 (has links)

Postoje a předsudky veřejnosti ke kriminalitě páchané extremisty / Positions and prejudices of publicity to criminality commiting by extremistsNOVÝ, Vít January 2009 (has links)
The major subject of this graduation thesis is political extremism in its basic forms. In the theoretical part the author focuses in particular on division of political extremism and description of individual extremists groups. He also addresses criminal activities committed by extremists. Large attention is paid mainly to racially motivated criminality. The main objective of this graduation thesis is to ascertain the opinions of two different target groups on the extremist movements and the forms of criminal activities committed by them. The first group of informants consists of people who were brought up in the time of totalitarian regime. The second group of informants is made up of people who were brought up after the revolution in 1989. The output should be the comparison of the opinions, positions and prejudices of these two groups of informants in respect of extremists and their activities. In the practical part the qualitative research method is used. In order to collect the information, the author used the method of phenomenological interviews that were structured and prepared beforehand. The informants were people living in České Budějovice or its close surroundings. Their number and selection was purposeful to secure equal representation of men and women so that the data contain the opinions of both these groups.

The photobook is a medium used by photographers for various reasons, one being the possibility to drive their narrative in a desired direction. Graphic design can impact this narrative by layout choices that affect how the material is perceived (Badger, 2014). Since the layout and sequencing affect the photographs themselves they therefore also have an impact on how photographed subjects are represented. This thesis examines, with a semiotic analysis and a historic overview, spreads from Gavin Watsons critically acclaimed photobook Skins . This is in order to understand how skinheads are presented in the book. Three spreads will be studied based on theories of representation, narrative and layout. This will result in a subsequent discussion on the designer’s role in breaking stereotypes in design choices and the presentation of the photographer's work. Examples of related design work and media will be brought up and related to Watson's book in order to highlight how we as graphic designers can break stereotypes through visual display of the subculture. The conclusion is reached that various photobook design theories are used to represent skinheads as inclusive individuals rather than a violent group.
