Hand-held Augmented Reality for Facility MaintenanceLiu, Fei January 2016 (has links)
Buildings and public infrastructures are crucial to our societies in that they provide habitations, workplaces, commodities and services indispensible to our daily life. As vital parts of facility management, operations and maintenance (O&M) ensure a facility to continuously function as intended, which take up the longest time in a facility’s life cycle and demand great expense. Therefore, computers and information technology have been actively adopted to automate traditional maintenance methods and processes, making O&M faster and more reliable. Augmented reality (AR) offers a new approach towards human-computer interaction through directly displaying information related to real objects that people are currently perceiving. People’s sensory perceptions are enhanced (augmented) with information of interest naturally without deliberately turning to computers. Hence, AR has been proved to be able to further improve O&M task performance. The research motif of this thesis is user evaluations of AR applications in the context of facility maintenance. The studies look into invisible target designation tasks assisted by developed AR tools in both indoor and outdoor scenarios. The focus is to examine user task performance, which is influenced by both AR system performance and human perceptive, cognitive and motoric factors. Target designation tasks for facility maintenance entail a visualization-interaction dilemma. Two AR systems built upon consumer-level hand-held devices using an off-the-shelf AR software development toolkit are evaluated indoors with two disparate solutions to the dilemma – remote laser pointing and the third person perspective (TPP). In the study with remote laser pointing, the parallax effect associated with AR “X-ray vision” visualization is also an emphasis. A third hand-held AR system developed in this thesis overlays infrared information on façade video, which is evaluated outdoors. Since in an outdoor environment marker-based tracking is less desirable, an infrared/visible image registration method is developed and adopted by the system to align infrared information correctly with the façade in the video. This system relies on the TPP to overcome the aforementioned dilemma.

O uso de ferramentas de geoprocessamento para o gerenciamento de bens patrimoniais e prediais / The use of geoprocessing tools for assent and facility managetientCouto, Ricardo Arendt Stiebler 23 April 2012 (has links)
The use of GIS - Geographic Information Systems, in asset management is widespread, especially in the infrastructure sector (utilities and transportation), in which assets are distributed along broad territories. The use of GIS in facility management, although a more recent practice, has been evolving in the last years. There are some cases where, management of, both the infrastructure and the facilities, is the responsibility of a single organization. Literature on the subject is scant, as well as reports on practical experience. This work aims to study the use o GIS in infrastructure and facilities management, especially when integrated, and to verify it, in practice, in the case of a university campus.

Integration of 3 dimensional parametric building model with geographic information systems in educational facilities planning and managementSamdadia, Viren V 08 June 2004 (has links)
"The efficient management of buildings and grounds of colleges and universities require an increased amount of information that is current, well organized and easy to access. This information is first generated at the planning stage of the facility before it is even designed. A seamless database containing current and accurate information about the facility and a tool that allows decision-makers to graphically relate the database with the physical location of the information provides a system to better integrate the decision making process from planning to actual operations and maintenance of the facility. This thesis presents an operational environment for facilities managers that integrates the 3 dimensional parametric building modeling with geographic information systems, both related to a common database, and explores the possible benefits and costs of using this integrated system."

Previous issue date: 2015-10-01 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The changes stimulated by the economic model have demanded of private higher educational institutions answers to deal with the challenges related to the business environment. These challenges are putting to the test these organizations in their ability to differentiate among the competition and to reinvent itself in the face of new opportunities and risks presented in this market. This differentiation in IES can occur through the development or improvement of educational services or in support of activities. Innovation is essential for these institutions, as the need to identify their capabilities, maximizing the development of innovation for a more efficient response to the challenges presented ahead. However, the identification of these information requires an understanding of information as subsidizer element of innovation and identification of what is needed for decision making by managers. Therefore, these organizations require an environmental monitoring to identify threats, opportunities and trends in this market. This monitoring, also called Competitive Intelligence, gives information to assist managers in making decisions. The question that arises is whether the competitive intelligence can provide inputs for the strategic management of innovation at Brazilian private non-denominational higher educational institutions , providing conditions for development of innovative services with bias and with positive outlook in relation to its performance and competitive advantage in the market. To answer this question, the literature review was conducted, with collection of secondary data as the Ministry of Education reports. The literature was able to identify the organizational characteristics of educational institutions, innovation models applicable in these institutions and competitive intelligence processes that support this innovation, in addition to integrating aspects of the innovation process and competitive intelligence in these institutions. The literature review points to the existence of relationships between the Competitive and Innovation Intelligence processes in IES, which leads to respond affirmatively to the main assumption raised in this paper: competitive intelligence can provide inputs for the strategic management of innovation in brazilians private non-denominational higher educational institutions, providing conditions for development of innovative services with bias and with positive outlook in relation to its performance and competitive advantage in the market / As mudanças estimuladas pelo modelo econômico têm demandado das Instituições de Ensino Superior Particulares respostas cada vez mais rápidas e eficientes frente aos desafios relacionados ao ambiente de negócios.

Heuristic Rule-Based Phase Balancing of Distribution Systems by Considering Customer Load PatternsHo, Cheng-Yu 10 June 2004 (has links)
In this paper, a heuristic backtracking search algorithm is proposed to adjust the phasing arrangement of primary feeders and laterals for phase balancing of distribution systems. The phase unbalance index of distribution feeders is calculated based on the phasing current magnitude of each line segment and branch, which has been solved by a 3-phase load flow program. The database of an automated mapping/facility management (AM/FM) system is used to retrieve the component attributes and topology process is executed to determine the electrical network configuration and to identify the customers served by each distribution transformer. By using the monthly energy consumption of the customers in customer information system (CIS) and the typical daily load patterns of customer classes, the hourly loading profiles of distribution transformers can be derived, which can be integrated to solve the load demand of each service zone. By this manner, the individual phase loadings of each primary feeder and lateral can be determined based on the phasing of distribution transformers and the power consumption served. The optimal phase balancing of distribution systems is performed by heuristic rule-based searching process to minimize the phase unbalance index so that the proper phasings of a primary feeder and its lateral can be assigned. To demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed methodology to enhance three-phase balancing of distribution systems, a practical distribution feeder with 2754 customers are selected for computer simulation. It is concluded that three phase balancing of distribution systems can be obtained by properly phasing design of primary feeders and laterals by considering customer load characteristics.

Evaluating the impacts of enterprise resource planning on organizational performance for small to medium enterprises in manufacturingSedehi, Arya 08 June 2015 (has links)
Today’s fast-paced global economy has intensified the demand for manufacturing companies to make their products more quickly and with higher quality to meet heightened consumer expectations while reducing costs. This competitive environment requires small to medium enterprise’s (SMEs) to implement well-designed business processes and leverage information technology (IT), such as an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system, within their facilities to become more agile, flexible, and integrated to meet changing market demands. Issues emerge when facility managers lack reliable data on performance and costs, which subsequently impairs even basic decisions for resource allocation or process improvement. Although the benefits of a successful ERP implementation in large firms are recognized, there is a general lack of empirical IT productivity literature focusing on SMEs.
This research is expected to contribute to a framework for performance measurement, providing facility decision-makers with important metrics for analyzing their firm’s ability to improve upon competitive priorities. Employing the Delphi process, key performance indicators (KPIs) including time, speed, quality, and cost, and corresponding performance measurement metrics, investigations are conducted between traditional manufacturing processes in SMEs and processes enhanced through ERP adoption. In this longitudinal case study, significant improvements are observed in production operations relative to time following ERP implementation including a reduction in the defect rate, total manufacturing cost, and scrap rate along with increases in on-time delivery and flexibility.
